I have a constant tension between my desire to make more horns and my limited storage space. Love the insulation foam ones, they look so fun!
The storage space is a big one honestly! especially for anything on a headband!

Well that makes me so happy to read thank you heaps! It's very easy to get stuck on projects and want to put them down and move onto something easier so good on for getting back into it!
You are already a masterpiece of "mother nature", but in addition you achieve the feat of embellishing this masterpiece.
If in addition you love what you do, you can only be fulfilled.
For your cardboard horns on metal, try adding a circle of felt under the horn and the headband, it works well for me.
Another method, which results in very lightweight horns, is to sculpt a buck out of oil clay -- Plasticene or Plastalina, for example -- and cover it with a few layers of paper strips and paste (You could also add a separation layer made of aluminum foil to prevent the paper from sticking to the clay.) Once the glue is thoroughly dry, use a knife to slice through all layers and remove the paper from the clay. Reassemble the paper horn and cover the parting lines with another layer of paper strips. Add a texture layer with papier-mache (such as Celluclay.) Seal with Mod Podge, and paint.
I don't know if anyone else knows about this, but if you don't want to buy a bunch of headbands, you can have 1-2 headbands that you use with adjustable horns. All you do is you take the headband you want to use, take some cardboard, wire, or heavy duty paper, cut it into a thin strip and wrap it around the width of the headband (make sure you can easily slide it without to much force, but also tight enough so it'll stay in place). Then all you do is hot glue the tube together (I found overlapping one side of the cardboard on top of another then hot gluing that helps), and hot glue the bottom of the horns to each tube. This will not only negate the amount of headbands you need to buy, but also make them adjustable if you want to add something in the middle of around them later like a crown or ears (which you can also make adjustable using this method). It also helps with storage bc you can just have a box with all your peices in it as opposed to a bunch of headbands with large intricate horns that may break easily depending on how you make them.
Also I'm not trying to downplay this video, these methods of making the horns in themselves work amazingly, and ive used the tin foil and clay method so many times for my horns. I just find making horns/ears detachable from the headband helps with storing them. Hope this helps someone :)

@MissTwisteddd thank you so much for these quick tutorials. 🥰 With all the new innovative ways to build cosplay, I can find it overwhelming. It's good to remind oneself that you don't need laser cutters, 3D printers etc, and good old cardboard will still do the trick. I loved the deer cosplay - so cute!❤
Do the cardboard horns ever get soggy from priming/painting? I want to cosplay as The Last Unicorn, and like the idea of using insulation foam for the horn.
I use pva/woodglue to prime, and I find that thermoplastics like worbla (especially black worbla) stick and form better on/around foam when pva glue is used.
I was running low on gold acrylic paint, so decided to mix it with the PVA wood glue. The finish turned out lovely, and created an almost smooth leather-like effect.
I haven't been in cosplay since 2019, (She-Ra, Weeping Angel) My angel wings were so heavy because I reinforced them with grid wire. I think I may redo them with cardboard and insulation foam spray, so i can carve out the feather patterns in the foam. That's only if the EVA foam ones are too heavy. I broke my back in 2020, and now require a rollator/crutches for mobility, so heavier cosplays are probably out of the window for a long time. I would love to do Medusa, but in an accessible way so that I don't need an extra three people with me to get me in and out of armour just to go to the loo😅.

(Sorry for delay in response, didn't realise this video had gotten some traction!) I hope your horns turn out well! I think the glue gun and foam/cardboard options are good for beginners as they're very easy supplies to get compared to the heat gun or primer, and you can get away with those horns without any kind of primer and just paint straight onto the glue and cardboard!

You can layer yer horns from Styrofoam with paper and pva glue. Don't thin the glue use it full strength and it will dry super hard. And will hold paint really well.🎉

Mmm... that second one might be ideal for making the dragon horns I want to do for my main Halloween costume this year. It looks like I might be able to get a real good curl with those. I'll just have to figure out the best way of mounting them on my head, because I imagine they might get quite heavy as they get bigger. lol
Definitely sounds like a good option! I try and get thicker and thicker headbands for larger horns to try and hold that weight!
@@MissTwisteddd Do you think attaching them right to the wig (in a removable way, of course) might work out? Or would the whole lot just be too heavy in the end? I wouldn't want a visible headband, and having it wide enough to hold the weight would be far too much... unless I stole wefts from another wig and glued them to the headband... that could work, but could also lead to frustration if the headband and wig got tangled together. My wigs always end up super tangled by the end of each night because some of the spaces in the haunted house are... narrow to say the least. Squeezing into places to scare people from leads to snares. Especially in the hospital room and the atrium. lol

12:05 something that will stick well to slick surfaces is a glue called gem tack i used it for sticking gems to a jean jacket and it worked really well and on the bottle it says that it’s really meant for any slick surfaces

The blue tape is painters tape and is made to release after about an hour. Masking tape is yellow and holds much better than painters tape.

I used to just use air-dry clay to do horns and they were always small ones. The ones I always bought at the store would fall over because of being so heavy and just being held by elastic. But recently I have used libraries 3D printer to make some custom horns, I put a teeny tiny hole in them so I could put the clear jewelry cord through and I have a stop court at the end

super helpful video, what would you suggest doing for mixed media horns that would need to be in the forehead area? my current thought is some kind of a laurel wreath thing, but heavier and more stable. For context, this would be for a cosplay of Lord Xander, the Collector from Magic the Gathering
I used the foam clay to make an entire log lady log. :D Crayola has different colors of it so I got like a light brown underneath and dark brown pieces I rolled out and "crackled" over the top to look like bark, then brushed it with some acrylics to texture it a bit. It ended up looking EXACTLY like a log but super light cause it was built around a carboard quaker oats tube. It was bizarre.
Well... *had, not sure if crayola still makes it but I hope so I want to make some ram horns to attach to my headset so badly.

Thank you so much for the tutorial! My friend recently showed interest in a cosplay that has horns and commissioned me to make a pair for them (although I have no previous experience in horn making). Though I have a few questions before I start making them.
1. Can the cardboard horns be attached directly to our face? The horns for the cosplay has a similar design to your antlers but the horns you made uses headbands and that's not the look my friend is going for.
2. Does lem fox work as primer? (It's a liquid glue that I think is used for industrial purposes? I'm not completely sure though) Or like any kind of glue? I don't think I'll be able to get mod podge

12:12 Maybe try a smaller needle instead. As long as it's not smaller than the thread. Smaller needles are easier to get through uncooperative materials and thick layers.
Can you post a video showing me how I can make my own harpy headpiece like yours? Or do I have to buy a premade one from your website?
Do you use a spray booth? Even a basic home made one with a usb powered fan would help keep the fumes down.
Use Gorilla brand E6000 to glue yer horns to a head band it will hold very well. awesome 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
