    Thanks for the great memories... Lots of familiar faces... I think Berkeley summer of '69 was the high point of my life (so far)... I saw the Son's of Champlin play an awesome set into the sunset, there... also the Santana Blues Band (before they were just Santana)... I think the profiled spectator (near the end) with glasses, sideburns, mustache and goatee with his hand on his chin was Country Joe and The Fish drummer John Francis Gunning... "Those were the days!"... Thanks!!

    The woman in the first 45 seconds is Renée "Dancing Girl" Berg [LeBallister]. Renée says she performed in Provo Park with Country Joe and the Fish, who performed at Provo Park on April 14, 1968. I will show this video to see if I have the facts straight.

      She danced at lots of those free concerts in Provo Park.

      I remember Renee. She danced at a lot of the concerts in San Francisco as well. I was also a dancer though more in the free concerts and the dance floors rather than the stages. Wonderful time. We lived for the music.

      Hey, Luther. It's Ace ("Bells'). Did Renee have any thoughts on who the band is?
      Sorry we missed connections last month. Let me know when you guys will be back through again.
      Hope all is well with everyone.

    I love this! I went to all these park concerts. The Sons, Country Joe, and The Youngbloods played, of course, but also bands like the MC5 came and played and many of my friends opened for those bands at that time too. This really looks like "us" during those years. The whole thing - the style, the overall look of things. I paused the video many times to see if I could see myself because, again, I went to all of these. The Sons song playing, I should note, is from the recorded album - not from a live show there.

    Born and raised in Berkeley, and if you stuck around (at least up to the new millennium) you probably know me. Shit, there's a damn good chance that most of the people here on the comments section know each other in from way. Massive love and respect to all!

    I LOVE watching these people doin' there thing without worrying about judgement or who's watching. They just "lived." People put up expressions on the internet- "Dance like nobody's watching" and "I like the weird people"... but most are FullOfS!!

    Thank you so much for posting this, and thanks to your dad for making the film. I was there for most if not all of the concerts there that Summer. I was ten years old. I used to get as close to the band as I possibly could. If you have a shot of a young kid sitting on one of the speakers, that's probably me. Nobody kicked me off of it, that's how good the vibe was. If you're one of the musicians - thanks. I never had a greater time.

    Berkeley 1969!! I was in high school at the time (right across the street from Provo Park, during school days we used to cut classes to hang out there and smoke grass) and in the summer there were free concerts in the park almost every weekend. What a year: the anti Vietnam war movement, the Black Panthers, Peoples' Park, Woodstock, KMPX and more that I may have forgotten (bummers of the year: Charley Manson, Altamont). BTW the real name of the park is Constitution Park but in the 60's it was renamed by the sub-culture to Provo Park in honor of the Dutch Provos in Amsterdam [search for "Provo (movement)" in Wikipedia] .
    I used to go to the weekend concerts whenever I could, I don't remember if I was at that particular concert but I could have been and I certainly recognize some of the faces. As noted, many of the commenters here probably know each other, if you recognize my name you're welcome to add a reply to me.

    Man, I'm not sure. This actually COULD be the Sons-the instrumental lineup (from what we can glimpse; wish your dad had given us more of the band) might fit. Not that many bands at the time carried a sax player and the guy playing the B-3 and singing might be Bill. Honestly, although I enjoyed their music I don't think I worked with 'em more than a couple times, so I don't have a good recollection of their appearance.
    Luther's right (and he ought to know!) the blonde dancer who gets so much footage is definitely Renee. She's a remarkable woman.

    • @eddyg2745
      @eddyg2745 2 роки тому

      I loved the Sons of Champlain but I don't remember what they looked like, as I recall they had several brass players and not just a sax. Wild guess: at one concert at Provo Park I saw a local group called "Fast Eddie", they played great music and had a B3 with a Leslie speaker (very briefly seen in the film). You're right about not many rock-'n-roll groups at the time having brass, even though the original Blood, Sweat & Tears (with Al Kooper) were already already blowing people away a couple of years earlier.

    Some of these people fried acid, and went to work the next day tossing all night leaving light on with lil sleep. At work monday Morning meeting feels like your body is going too fall over and there's nothing you can do about it, except look embarrassed stiff. Good acid.
