This is 16mm film shot by my father at a Provo Park free concert in 1969. Provo Park is located in Berkeley CA across the street from Berkeley High School and was the site of many free concerts in the late 60's (see berkeleyfolk.blogspot.com/2010/07/provo-park-berkeley-concerts-1967-69.html) The main subject of the film is the people at the concert. I love the clothes, hair, looks. I was not ab...

Highlights from our night snorkeling adventure with manta rays off the Kona coast, December 2013. We were in the water for about 50 min with manta rays swimming all around us. Went with Kona Ocean Adventures who did a great job; I would definitely recommend them if you want to get in the water with manta rays. this is actually the only true documentary history, confirmed by words and pictures. I want you to know that there are people who are deeply grateful for this kind of documentary material. I have no intention of ever abusing these recordings. I simply watch and am grateful. How many beautiful, beautiful people...

Myself and 3 others went there in a 1953 Studebaker. We knew the area so we were able to drive across the foothills and through open gates. We got fairly close and then had to park and walk. We sat on a hill where we could look down on the stage and see figures but the only way we knew who was on was from the announcements and or the music. Although we could not make out who was on stage, there were huge speakers and the sound was LOUD and GOOD. There were numerous show stoppages and usually someone would be asking for the crowd to settle before the show would continue. We stayed until the show was over and made our way out and home with no major issues. We had enjoyed the show and had no idea about any deaths or murders until the next days news, that reported the concert to be a total disaster. We had a great time.

I remember going there (in 69) and discovering "grass" and falling in love with a hippy girl who flashed me her boobs. I had just turned 13 and she said "welcome to your teenage years" and lifted her shirt. NEVER FORGET!!!!

Wow, this is so awesome. I love those crowd shots. I did not think any more film like this existed. My Dad was there, right up front. I can see him on the Gimmie Shelter film during Under my thumb for about 2 seconds. He saw everything, right in front of him. He didn’t talk about it much but ive always imagined what that must have been like to be there. Thank you for redigitizing this treasure and thank your mother for sharing her memories

What a slice! Thanks so much for sharing this. (I am using my husband's account to comment, so picture and name are not mine). There were a number of these protests staged during a short period of time, and it's nice to see some moments of peace and calm, considering what happened to people like James Rector, Richard Ehrenberger, and others who were shot (sometimes fatally, as in Rector's case) by law officers. I remember also being in 4th grade in Rockridge area of Oakland and breathing in some of the tear gas which had wafted over from Berkeley. The cops and National Guard must have used a MASSIVE amount of the stuff, because 5 miles away we had to leave the playground. It reeked awfully and felt horrible to breathe. Please leave your dad's film up here. People need to see it.

My father dropped out of High School and got busted with Pot, so my grandparents signed for him to join the Army, so he wouldn't go to jail. Surprisingly, they went him to Vietnam! He saw terrible things, and developed horrible ways of dealing with the horror (whore?) of war.

Berkeley 1969!! I was in high school at the time (right across the street from Provo Park, during school days we used to cut classes to hang out there and smoke grass) and in the summer there were free concerts in the park almost every weekend. What a year: the anti Vietnam war movement, the Black Panthers, Peoples' Park, Woodstock, KMPX and more that I may have forgotten (bummers of the year: Charley Manson, Altamont). BTW the real name of the park is Constitution Park but in the 60's it was renamed by the sub-culture to Provo Park in honor of the Dutch Provos in Amsterdam [search for "Provo (movement)" in Wikipedia] . I used to go to the weekend concerts whenever I could, I don't remember if I was at that particular concert but I could have been and I certainly recognize some of the faces. As noted, many of the commenters here probably know each other, if you recognize my name you're welcome to add a reply to me.

I was and raised in Berkeley. Born in Alta Bates on Telegraph Avenue and spent my first years at The Carlton Hotel above Blondies Pizza. Berkeley is who I am. This video truly exemplifies the beauty of my dear hometown. Today, police in riot gear pushed people out of their homes within Peoples Park, which should have been marked as a landmark years ago, yet the University of California Berkeley has decided to go the way of Ronald Reagan and destroy one of the truly free and last vestiges of an intellectual and free thinking society. So that students can live in closet spaced set-up shop condominiums the size of the road ridden drug dens of old for and arm and leg. Instead of building nearby homes for the poor and seeing the forest for the trees, UC Berkeley has decided to build uniform shit-hole conformist closet dorms for the rich over the bones of what made this city shine. Fuck every single one of these awful people who would bulldoze an epicenter of critical thinking and freedom in favor of a corporate coffin kingdom. Berkeley discovered that atom, dark matter and changed the world. Our once beloved institution of brilliance has become a joyless junk yard of dead ideas; a machine built to destroy itself. I truly and sincerely pray with every inch of my being that this building is surrounded by headless zombies who talk about the weather and stab each other in the back while they gnaw at the grisly leftover viddles of their humanity. These armor clad police people wouldn't know the meaning of freedom if it came on their face. Freedom is NOT a capitalist idea and being a slave to money does not make someone any less a slave. Berkeley, and more importantly Telegraph Avenue and People's Park are one of the greatest microcosms for conversational diversity and thought in the world. UC Berkeley has more than enough money and space to build outside of a place so important to those of us who grew up there. I can understand if you disagree with me, but please understand that I am actually from here. I'm a Harvard alumnus and have a full-time job in Boston. Imagine one of the most important places in your life being demolished for such a ridiculous reason as "A Multi Billion Dollar institution paid for by tax payers wants to put up a large condominium so that children can have easier walk to school then they have in the past 100 years." it's utterly ridiculous. I truly pray that anyone in favor of this chokes on the rotten bits of Ronald Reagans bony cock.

They just had no time to set up this outdoor concert! Everything was rushed and there wasn’t even a back stage! Hell angels did not belong there at all!! They get wasted and then the bloodshed begins! The stage was so small and right there- hardly any separation between the bands and the crowd, only the Hells angels!! The music was great though!
