When Kane scored early in extra time, you just knew England, instead of going for a third goal, would go all defensive, hanging on for grim death, batten down the hatches. All that talent, and they crawled into the quarters.
I turned to my neighbour after we scored and said "we've scored too early, we'll be hanging on for all of extra time now!"
It was meant as a joke at the time.
Because that's the sensible thing to do in extra time. No team in the world intentionally goes all out after leading in extra time. I don't expect you or most other English fans to know this because you all know next to nothing in football.

Italy did switzerland a huge favor by taking it easy on them. Italy never pressed the Swiss so the Swiss should be very well rested. In a way the match against Italy was like a rest day. Then you don't understand how betting lines work. Being the favorite doesn't mean they're going to win. They're on the easy side of the group. France, portugal, Spain, Germany would be favored over England but they're not on that side. Thry have to get past each other. England have a much easier route, plus English people gamble more than other nations.

It’s amazing to me how boring and shocking England have been at the EUROs, yet they’re still in the tournament thanks to the fact that they’ve managed to pick up points and were in a weak group where none of the other teams were able to win and they were so lucky to beat Slovakia on Sunday because in the 94th minute without Jude Bellingham’s incredible bicycle kick, they would’ve lost that game. I don’t know how a team with a lot of talent on paper look so dysfunctional and unorganized and it’s obvious that at the end of the day it’s all about coaching as it takes more than just talent to win major tournaments because this isn’t FIFA, you can’t have the best 11 players on the pitch without any tactics. It’s all about having the right players and profile not playing players because of their ability even though their profile doesn’t fit the team. Tbry have an easier path to the final, it won’t be as straightforward as people think it is because on the other side of the bracket you’re gonna have to go up against either France Portugal Spain or Germany in the final and those teams can all beat them easily. They have the same old problems over and over again and I wonder if Gareth Southgate is going to learn this time around because consistently making the same mistakes and then having to rely on moments of individual brilliance to bail you out, yes that works in a major tournament when you play against weak opposition and you actually made proper substitutions for once I’ll give him credit for that as it was enough for them to get the job done in a game they should’ve lost, but again it’s not always sustainable and it seems like their manager is a dead man walking. He is so confusing and it’s absolutely beyond me because you know that there are some things in the team that isn’t working out, why is he always leaving the starting lineup unchanged and then making 1 chance, it’s a sign that he still doesn’t know what his best starting XI is.
You know that Phil Foden isn’t a left winger, why does he keep playing him there because he has to drift centrally to occupy the same spaces in which Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane take up meaning that you don’t have a fullback overlapping him as Kieran Trippier isn’t a left back (hopefully Luke Shaw should be able to play), and the left side is isolated as majority of their attacks come from the right. Maybe Bukayo Saka needs to play as a left back and they should switch to a back 3 which is something they used in the past even though it won’t happen. Going into their game against Switzerland, England should be the favorites to win, they’re going up against a team that isn’t as talented than them on paper, but have played much better and they look more cohesive and well oriented than them and assuming they show up and Southgate gets it right, they’ll win, if he doesn’t change up, they’ll lose that’s the way I see this game.
I think you forgot a couple of paragraphs.
11.English players plus the coach is 10.English players. With the last win at the last minute, maybe the players will be more connected. This way they can play better and save the coach.

The difference between this current Swiss side and how they previously played is that their much more comfortable holding possession with their ball playing defenders, and Ndoye, Reider, Aebischer and Vargas have added a different dimension in allowing fast counter attacks and wide attacking play and are not as reliant on having a quality striker such as Embolo or previously Seferovic.
The bookies (the English bookies) make England favourites because they can't afford to give good odds when fans will bet on them irrespective of form. England are probably 5th favourites for this tournament but that's no use to the bookies.

You can always point at anomalous moments (Bellingham) that save the day - there's been enough football played over the last 160 years.... But for every one of those you can find ten or twenty instances where The Man played poorly and yet, somehow(??), the Team still lost. 'Special things' that turn the tide are 'special' because they are rare, and being reliant on the anomaly - the rare occurrence - is not a 'Plan' for success. That said, as a Man City follower i've really enjoyed the immense contributions that all of the boys have made to their respective Teams at this Tournament... until I look at England. Walker and Foden haven't suddenly become rabbits - something else is going on.
Heh, very true. When looking back at a season it's tempting to look for a specific event or 3 points either way which changed EVERYTHING. To work backwards from that and try to rely on a magical event happening to save the day as a strategy doesn't sound ideal. It says more about humans than the game itself I think.

The only bullet proof way to win against Switzerland is to hype them up as favorites. they cannot handle that at all. If England underestimates them and the Swiss come out confident, they will win 3-1 against England. If England comes in with some respect and the Swiss are a bit too comfortable, it will be 1-0 or 0-1 based on luck.
