I find M Richards just too much for this show, loud and over the top. It's nearly as if the show is more about him than the football.

I like AT, regardless. I think refereeing the game today is very pressurising, and he with the likes of Michael Oliver do a tough good job. many of us ought to try it out and find out. Pundits do it from the comfort of.
Gary and I are of similar vintage and his stories always take me back to a time when the game was more pure and I had unending passion for it, sadly the modern game is a far cry. He can his stories any day. I dare say we’d have a good yarn. This a great Podcast/Vlog.

Love Gary, one of my first football hero’s. But as fondly as we all look back at Italia 90, they drew 1-1, then 0-0, then won 1-0 v Egypt. 1 nil v Belgium with 120minute winner. 3-2 v Cameroon with 2 goals from penalties and then drew 1-1 with Germany. They were not a flamboyant or particularly attacking team. Even Terrys 96 side only really had 4-1, which was fantastic. Scotland, Gazza goal aside was not a vintage performance against an ordinary team at best, it just had a terrific end. Point being it’s a myth that England have ever strung convincing performances together. You could count them on one hand in the last 40 years

de la Fuente made the right decision by replacing Yamal. The game became more and more physical so that he saves the best for last. It was risky but he knew what was best for the team.
Yes. Pedri is a good example what happens if you let a very young player play to much for club and country. Injury after injury.

I never thought the Germans would be so scared that they had to resort to "playing" dirty and horrible. Good riddance. The best team won, no doubt.

The best news is with 5 at the Back England can pass the ball about more in Defence. I think 1 Attack = 1 Goal is Southgate's masterplan.
Score early then go to a flat back 11 for 85 mins is Southgate's only strategy, the mentality of a defender.
May be they could run up the pitch backwards; far easy to pass back to the goalkeeper that way.
If Trippier starts at rwb over Trent then that is a disgrace. Trent might as well get on the plane now and tell Southgate to do one

@marekadboy I happily admit that Trippier was a better rb than Trent. But unfortunately all footballers go through a stage when someone overtakes them. Trent has been better than Trippier for the least couple of seasons. That isn't taking anything away from what Trippier has achieved or played in the past

You can tell no player at this tournament is anywhere near 100%. Everybody is at like 70% max. Especially the superstars they all look exhausted. A lot of the big moment have came from the unexpected people, but that has made this tournament amazing. I think the stars still have something to say though!
Germany came out physical and referee allowed it. It changed the dynamics of the game and it hurt Spain. Kroos being able to play almost until the end was a gift by the referee. He fouled Pedri twice inside 5 minutes.
An infinitely better display by England - as we all have noted, due to a better set-up and tactics. Saka was the best player for England by a mile. The only major concern (yes, I could go on for days with nit-picking - they should do this, they should do that - but let's be positive for a moment) the only major concern was Kane who just looked tired and unimaginative. There were a number of occasions he just didn't bother running into the box for the cross! He's the center forward, right? That's what they do! And penalties were awesome. C'mon England!

One sweet note is that Mikel Merino's dad scored in that same stadium 30 years ago at a UEFA Cup match when playing for Osasuna. Mikel copied his father's celebration by doing a spin around the corner flag.
Martinez has elements of Southgatitus, his subs & lack of them cost Portugal
His decision to not take Ronaldo off when he'd done nothing all game is reminiscent of Gareth's loyalty to Kane.
Did you actually watch the Portugal vs France game or just watch the highlights afterwards. Despite Martinez making multiple changes throughout the game, Portugal still made chances and controlled the game at certain points. From the outset Portugal had movement and could have scored a couple of times. They also defended well. France had pace but lacked finishing. I only saw Ronaldo dropped deep to get the ball once in that game. But Harry Kane drops deep all the time. If you have a big target you stay in that box and be there for when the ball arrives.

Kane plays; Ronaldo was just a figure head with no purpose other than pleasing him, Portuguese people (some) and perhaps trying to scare the opponents, which he did not do at all. Had another player subbed him, we could be talking about an Iberian final. Oh, well...Sorry, Portuguese brothers.
@@Youafool500 How is Martinez a fraud of a manager when his team played well against France. I'm not saying that Ronaldo looked great. I was saying that the team played good overall. Unlike Southgate he made changes early in the second half and the team still played good. They actually had movement. France didn't even have a target in the middle. Granted they got players who can do great things but their finishing was worse.
Spain handed Germany the upper hand when they took off yamal& Williams it gave the German defense more room to venture forward

I think he will play Walker Stones and Konsa as back 3 and TTA RWB and I think the big decision for Southgate will be LWB playing Shaw or Saka. I'm at a point now where I don't care how they play or what team he picks as long as they win...look at France. It's frightening to think if England click into gear and play well what they would do to teams.

Can't see anyone that's left beating Spain, France haven't scored a goal from open play and have looked poor all tournament, England too timid, they will have done well to beat Switzerland, Netherlands and Turkey not good enough.
The Foul on Pedri was the winner for spain because Olmo went on the pitch.

Switzerland play 4-3-3 in attack then 4-5-1 in defence. Now you can make your tactical adjustments.

The podcast is absolutely amazing I can't get enough. But how can you say Germany were better? At the most they were equal. They bothe had moments in the game where they were on the front foot but Spain looked great all game. Also Micah keeps saying Spain look vulnerable but they've literally conceded 1 goal all tournament and that was against Germany.
Gary, you have been a fave of mine since childhood, but I have to show some love to Micah. He has the same great joker vibes as my favorite German player Rüdiger. I love your podcast. Just wish that German commentators had the humour you guys do, but Germans are like Protocoll droids, always adhering to the script.
I don't think the problem is Southgate at all. I think the problem is that we need a co-manager, Northgate, who can show us how we can play an attacking game. And crucially we also need an assistant manager, Stargate, who'll allow us to easily access the seemingly impenetrable northern end of the pitch. That'll sort it all out.
If we do get lucky and score first then expect England to defend for the rest of the match, even if we score in the first minute because that is the way Southgate likes it. Though it never works for some reason he seems to think going after a second goal is too dangerous

To be honest, after our games we played and the change in formation. "Im not looking forward to england game today," and it could be a blessing we go out today. Because we will not beat france or spain. That's not because of the players. it's just the manager and the coaches

Honestly, either team progressing is well-deserved, it just came down to a bit of luck and a bit of individual moments (or lack thereof).
Imo, handball on goal-bound shot should have been a penalty, but can't complain too much.
It's the first time there's a real spark in this team in 10 years and it'll be a while before we get to see how Germany under Nagelsmann progress, especially without Kroos and likely Muller, Gundogan, and Neuer.

England have the players to play in a back 3, Stones in particular would be freed to play his normal game. TAA as a sweeper/libero in a back 3 could be interesting. Liberates him from defensive duties but provides the space for him to get forward.
No one is saying this but you’re right. England’s centre backs have more of the ball than anyone. Trent treading passes through gaps would help get the ball into midfield better.
@@paulwatch5990 It would be interesting for TAA do develop as a sweeper, as I don't see him having the pace or ethic of a WB like Walker or Robertson. I think he could be an effective libero and almost perfect for this role due to his ball playing ability and the fact that he doesn't really fit anywhere else. But hey, I'm bias as I have libero fettish and want to see stuff like this happen in football

Watched the highlights from England vs Netherlands 1990 just now, England wasted more chances in that game than theyve created this whole Euros. Quick note, Barnes and Gascgoine looked incredible.
If England play france in the final, a trip to Dignitas would be more entertaining.

This is probably out of date but just here to complement Micah’s tactical nouse as a pundit. He’s levels above a lot of the guys out there.
They'll be zero width or running in behind again, also Foden, Kane, Bellingham will all be deep getting in each others way in the No 10 position. This will be a deep 5 at the back with Rice receiving the ball off the CB's and no forward passing to Foden or Bellingham. Southgate will turn this into a defensive Back 5. Playing Trippier over Trent on the RWB position just shows you the mentality of the manager, conservative. I'm Scottish so I hope you get pumped, you deserve nothing with these tactics and leaving all that talent on the bench
I picked Switzerland to beat italy due to back 3, i gives you natural width and solidity. In tournament football having natural width to attack is a huge advantage when teams dont play with each other very often and dont have patterns of play etc. We are going to see a completely new team if England play a back 3

We do need to be bold and we do need Trent on the right (as Lineker explained). CRUCIALLY, we also need to know what to do if - shock horror - we play well and take the lead.
In such a case, we must carry on with _attack being the best form of defence._

Yamal was brought off so that Spain FA didn't have to pay a fine. The law in Germany states that people under the age of 18 are not alowed to work after 8pm. The fine is around 25,000 euros
France will win the tourny if they get their shooting boots on, if not, it'll be Spain

The football level of that game Germany - Spain is something England couldn’t even dream of. There’s several leagues between those sides and a „team“ like england
Calm down. Germany have been absolutely crap for the last 4 tournaments and this one at home they’re out in the quarters. England have a far better tournament record in that time. Better youth tournament results. Beat them comfortably in the last euros. No “dreaming” necessary. Southgate will leave and England will improve again in the next tournament.

The senior team hasn’t, but ask any nation how meaningless having a successful youth set up is for achieving future success. England can't be clinical in the final third unless harry kane stays up top. He drops WAY too far in. There is no rashford OR gordon. He has to stay in his spot and let the team work to him and stay as the target man and ready for a cross or a drop off into the penalty spot for a first time shot

One of the worst tournaments I've ever witnessed,the problem is there aren't many players prepared to take risks, virtually only the young players play without fear, most teams are so defensive they don't want to lose or go out and win it,the England players look like they are frustrated with tactics and formation, Foden looks like a naughty boy whose been scolded recently. Micah Richard is really pro Germany. I think both teams played well, Spain played better 55 minutes until they scored and then Germany played better from there to the end until they equalised. The extra time was balanced. Both teams would have been fair winners. So I don't agree when he says the best team lost. Also, Spain has until now been the best team in the tournement.

Love the banter here, but sadly not one mention of the Netherlands V Turkey Qrter final, which turned out to be an infinitely better & exciting game!
Been crying out for a 3-4-3 but it now comes down to the personal… which I think Southgate will balls up. Agree with everything Gary says here. I’d start Watkins so that Kane can benefit off tired legs in the last 20-30 of normal time. Then he’s also fit for extra time and pens if necessary.

A few years ago, the idea of playing counter-attacking football against Switzerland would never have been mentioned! At WC 1990, the game v Holland was only the 2nd game of the tournament. We are into the 5th game of tournament, and only now is a tactical change being seriously considered. Sir Bobby Robson was more flexible and probably more knowledgeable than Gareth Southgate.
Gotta realise that the Ronaldo argument with Portugal is exactly the same as with Kane and England

You say, Gary, that football's a team game, not an individual game, notwithstanding Bellingham's goal. England's progression proves otherwise. If it was primarily a team game, England would not be at this stage. It is both a team game and an individual game depending on the day. Either one can be the deciding factor.
