- Whilst in Salt Lake City, I visit Luxe Automotive to test drive their iconic Porsche 959 - a 1980s supercar that was built for rally but was also the fastest production road car you could buy in 1987!

No clickbaits, no sponsorship..just quality content and cool cars!!👌
He does pretty well with sponsors actually....
I try to clickbait, I'm just not very good at it
@@seenthroughglass Trust me! You DO NOT need clickbaiting,as your content is always humourous, chilled, honest and fun... which is always a pleasure to watch!!! So don't change that!
Of course there's sponsorship, that's how most big channels run and that's how Sam gets to do around the world. That said no taking away from the quality content. But with content comes costs, travel, production, editing, accommodation, time, planning.
OMAZE don't like this comment
You Are the Most Underappreciated Man on UA-cam....thanks Sam for staying the course
Congrats for the first real comment 👍
@@Swe_Slipknot it's rare huh ? Lol
Yeah No one wrote first this time 😂
@@Swe_Slipknot that crap drives me nuts
I’ve never heard a comment with so much truth in it, sam’s content is incredible the quality is amazing he deserves so many more subscribers
I owned one of these long ago and used it as a daily for nearly a year, usually with two dogs on board. Driving it mostly on UK roads and in all weathers I really got to know it’s limits - which were vast of course, but I’m not surprised it seemed a little boring on a short drive in the sun on a smooth road. It was the early 90’s and we didn’t yet have speed cameras to contend with - I lived in Devon at the time but drove up to London at least a couple of times a week and the A303 and A30 became my personal race track; had a very long game of cat and mouse with a V12 E-Type one day in the rain (I gave him plenty of room!) for about an hour on the way home to Exeter and it’s one of the most memorable drives I’ve ever had in a car. Often wish I’d never sold it and occasionally think about replacing it, but the reality is that a modern 4WD 911 is a better car and a fraction of the cost - and I’ve got more room for the dog (just the one now) who still travels most places with me. Great video, brings back fond memories.
Awesome dude. This is deffinetly one of the most important cars in history since it porsche continued producing 911 because of it's success
BUT ITS ONE OF 300 like that’s some HISTORICAL SHIT!!! you messed up 😆BUT at least you drove the hell out of it 👍🏻👍🏻🏁🏁🏁🏁🏁👌🏻
Cool story! Got my license in -91. So my holy grail was the -91 964 Turbo. Sold mine in March last year after living the dream with the Turbo for 3 yrs. Truth be told the 964 Turbo is the prettiest Porsche ever made, but also a tad boring. I feels bigger and heavier than it is. I prefer the 964 Carrera
And I also had a Carrera T for a couple of yrs. Sold it last October. The Carrera T is a car that will become a true classic. We shouldn’t have sold ours Sam!
The top speed was first beaten by the F40, then EB110, then XJ220, then F1.
But a nice car anyway.
And so nice to see you make a video with it.
Most people have forgot about this car and remember the F40.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks for representing Ferrari ❤️❤️
Didn't they released the 210 mph 959 S after it was beaten by the f40? What about the RUF CTR?
AH yes, of course, the EB110 and XJ220. Thanks for the insight
@@seenthroughglass No problem.
Not always easy to remember them all.
Denis Spratt the 959 was meant to be a daily driver unlike the others nobody better than the German maufacters period
The Porsche 961, the Le Mans version of the 959, got a 7th overall( first in class) at the 1986 24h race and lapped faster than several C1 and C2 prototypes. Not bad for a factory race program that was probably 3rd in line, after group C and Paris-Dakar.
Cheers Sam, keep up the good work!
The 959 is my favourite Porsche.
Looking forward to another Superb video Sam 👍🏻🙂
One of your best filmed episodes ever. Beautiful shots, quality content.
I am loving your USA tour. Keep up the great work!
Rolling around in one of the cars I dreamed of as a kid. Amazing Sam.
Loving ALL your content Sam!
Awesome... went to the NEC in 84 and saw the 959, still learned something new. Awesome car and video content 👏
Had the white 959 on a black background motor show poster on my bed room wall.
Great video! I can't imagine what the members videos are like :3
The way you were driving the car does kinda show that it isn't as dramatic as it's contemporaries and that it's just too refined to have a lot of "character" which just shows Porsche's ability to make a fine product.
another great vlog as usual. This channel needs more views and subs!!!
Definitely my favorite canyon surrounding Salt Lake City. Awesome video!
The quality of your videos is AMAZING top notch!
Best car UA-camr by far
Great video Sam. Looking forward to seeing more.
Seen through glass is the greatest channel on UA-cam
One of the best but I wouldn't say it is the best. That's your opinion, but a very good one.
sam thank you for the superb continuous content
A masterpiece from Porsche!
Just awesome!
Thank you for this amazing video
U are the most underappreciated man on youtube sam .. keep up the good work
Great content as usual sam 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
Amazing video, the 959 is such a special car for Porsche. It saved the 911! And showed what the 911 could be one day. I think the weight of the 4 wheel drive system and all that allows it to raise up and be driven off road takes away from what it could be on the road, but for it to be able to do both so well, it is one of the most unique cars to come out of the 80s. I love the 959! And I am so jealous but happy that we got to see you drive it!!
I remember this coming out but never realised it had the off road gear or suspension lift as it went up against the xj220 at the time 🤔🤘
Crazy how much Group B rally elements remained on the car
@@seenthroughglass
Low range gear "G" and even suspension lift has nothing to do with grupe B rally cars nothing! it was maybe usuable on paris-dakar rally
Fantastic Sam - nice job
Beautiful video as always Sam! Hope you can make it to Chile!
Quality content Sam!
Good to see you touching base with modern classics.
I would do more but the videos never seem to perform that well
@@seenthroughglass I suppose it depends what you classify as modern classic,as MrJWW does quite well with his version of it!
Always good content Sam 👌🏽👌🏽
Consistently brilliant videos.
The 959 was my very first favorite car when I was 8 yrs old such an iconic vehicle😍🥰❤️
Welcome to UTAH!! I've been enjoying your videos of your home (UK), so it's fun enjoying your videos of my home (Utah)
I had a poster of the 959 and the F40 on my wall growing up. Absolutely love both cars!
Great video, really good to hear an honest unsponsored opinion being given! Defo a poster car for me so interesting to hear your feelings on it, will still list after one thou
Excellent car 959 . And amazing congrats you found your GoPro. 👍👍😊😊
Awesome again high quality
Great vid!!! Yes James Go for.it set the World Record!!!! Go!!! Go, Go!!!
Sam, this is the first time I have seen a 959 driven at speed since the 1980's on TV...and damn it looks so good still!!!
Mad respect to Luxe Automotive and Max with the heavy foot!
James would have had you at 1 million followers Sam if you would have just taken his advise with the high speed record attempt at the salt flats....
Amazing content 👍
The best automotive content
Great,honest review.
So cool to see the 959. The competitor to the F40, but we so rarely see them and so rarely spoken about compared with F40s.
The car and scenery is EPIC
Some full high resolution pictures of the 911 on the salt flats would make a nice desktop background.
That opening shot... My fav Porsche. 👍🏽👍🏽
Great video Sam, Well done! Regarding the 959, the more I look at it, the more I hear about it, the more I like it. I have to say I thought it was hideous the first time I saw one 😂
I love this car, I recently saw one in a driveway of a regular looking house, the 959 wasn't in the best condition but imagine getting to restore one
seem to remember boris becker bought a new 959 when he was 19 or 20 got a speeding ticket in switzerland i believe. I Have never driven a 959 but i have driven an F40 and owned a xj220. loved the f40 . nice video Sam
G does not stand for Geländewagen (offroad car), that's the G in G Klasse (G-Wagon). In the 959 it stands for Geländegang (offroad Gear)
I'm not a huge fan of modern Porsche's looks, but your 911 is absolutely amazing looking. I love those lights and the color.
I like your channel because you have style (why would Pirelli the style company support you otherwise) you team up with people you like and not just because of their cars. And you have a good taste for music. Looking forward to much more to come :)
The Porsche 959!!! 🤤
Truly hope you put some effort in to learning and seeing more of Speed Week, it's an incredible event, the folks there are as friendly if not more then any other motor sports event.
I respect that you had the guts to say you didn't necessarily like the 959. it was nice to see the Stradman back in your video. You definitely should have given the car a high speed run
So cool to see this iconic car on familiar roads.
The 959 is my all time favourite car just because it was so ahead of its time
Had the 959 and F40 on my bedroom wall 😘👌🏻👌🏻 still love them
I love the way you’ve turned into a super Porsche fan boy. Yes!
Did not even realize it. Road to 500k!!!
Never knew about the off-road 'granny' mode. Cool.
Never know it either
HOW DOES THIS VIDEO ONLY HAVE 60K VIEWS? ITS LITERALLY A 959 VIDEO IN THE DIRT WTF UA-cam
Epic Car :)
oh my, Porsche 959 is just great as it is. Even in todays era, Porsche 959 still has the scar in the automobile history. Would be definitly one my top 10 classic super car collection :p
Give me a 959 and a 993 Turbo S, only two cars I'll ever need/want
Ryan Hunter they’re both fairly similar brah
@@MercSLRFan indeed they are pal. My dream cars nonetheless, something so timeless about the shape.
The stradman brought me here, wonderful Sam, new sub here 🇨🇦👍🏻
Thanks and welcome!
I’ve been hoping Porsche will bring back that extended rear end since the 959 went away. Such a cool looking design.
I imagine it’s hard to be blown away by older cars like the 959 when actually driving them and experiencing them compared with today’s supercars. A new 992 Carrera S is probably faster and handles better in every way than a 959. But if you can imagine what it would have been like to get behind the wheel of a 959 when it was new in 1987 compared to the other high performance cars of the day then it would exceed all expectations and be an unbelievable experience. A 959 in the late 1980’s was like a Bugatti Chiron today and actually was even better for it’s time. The technology and performance of the 959 was just so far ahead of it’s time and so much more advanced than anything else for years. It took 20 years before other high performance sports cars started regularly having a lot of the technologies that the 959 came with.
every time I see/hear references to the BSF I always think of the "The Fastest Little Indian"; what a great little movie......
A Porsche video yay
OMG 959. What a legend
Did anyone notice transition in rear of mountain at 9.24
Sounds so fucking good too!
Really loving drive the world, i am constantly amazed that the views per video are relatively low. You have such a natural and likeable presenting style. I always make sure i watch the adverts to maximise your income from the great videos
I think you have to take this car in the context of it’s time, that it was the forerunner of what you take for granted in modern 911’s and many other modern cars. 4WD, twin turbos, self levelling and adjustable suspension, light weight materials and a car you can still drive to the south of France in
In Utah chasing those views on views. 👍
I felt it's like 918 . It's a good car but P1 got something special to it.
Personally I really liked the look of the 959. 👍 and Sam you really need to watch Worlds Fastest Indian movie with Anthony Hopkins as Bert Munro. Then you will get an idea of what has been happening at Bonneville for decades and decades. Loved it matey great vid 👍👍
you should make a list of every single car you have ever driven for youtube? would make an interested read
959 doing 200 on the Salt Flat would’ve been INCREDIBLE!!!! Or see how fast it can go fully raised 👈🏻👈🏻
Song towards the end - Neon Raceway
intercooler BIG, DCI, blowoff, Fabspeed pipes, etc
"Not very pretty." Say what? Watching this 959 takes my breath away. It's a piece of art. One of, if not the prettiest, Porsche's ever made!
p.s., Superb videography, Sam!
Something about, 'meeting your heroes' here.
Sam, affix a Tile to each of your GoPros. Not miles better than searching randomly. But hugely beneficial if you know roughly where they fall. Just a thought. A small investment for pricey, lost equipment.
All cars designed to be effective in a sense lose character. Think about the human body, when you're healthy and everything is running ok you don't even feel it, it's like it's not even there. That's the sort of experience void you only get with the most highly engineered cars. Same thing happens with the electrics. It's not that they're bad, they're transparent to the driving experience. And I agree with you Sam, it's a lovely thing to look at, so iconic. It in reality is a 911 evolved, and the true father to the modern 4x4 turbo 911's. Awesome video dude. And honest.
So a couple of years ago a few blokes from New Zealand had a stupid idea. Take a 1 litre mini, and get a land speed record with it, at the Bonneville Salt Flats. From what I recall they managed 166mph. From a 1 litre brick shaped car, first put into production in 1959. Us kiwis have a knack for weird land speed records, it seems...
They have all these super nice cars and a $25 sign on their building.
So glad they have their priorities straight.
The Veyron of its era? Expensive, technologically advanced, very civilized, yet the fastest car in the world. Then the crazy, lighter, rwd F40/Koenigsegg came and beat it.
Nice driving 😂
Said it before... the 959 was the Bugatti Veyron of its day. Absurdly fast and capable, yet everyday-drivable with all the luxuries the well heeled owner could want. Many have said that the Veyron is also a pretty underwhelming car to drive if you're not "on it", and I guess the same can be said for the 959. And that in itself is why I love cars like these... there's almost no compromise, since you have a civilized and cosseting car that you can go to dinner in, as well as a beast of a mile-eater when you want to have some fun on open stretches.
7:52 What about the XJ220?
Indeed. They forgot about XJ220.
I still love the 959. If I ever had millions of dollars and could actually afford a good exotic car collection I’d have two 959’s. One totally stock and original for preservation and investment purposes and the second would be rebuilt by Bruce Canepa with all his upgrades and have the Canepa Gen III conversion done with it’s 763 horsepower and 635 ft/lb of torque engine. That car I would drive the hell out of.
No, group B was 2 different things: The Rally Class and The Racing Class. The 959 was meant for the group b racing (as was Ferrari 288GTO) and NEVER intended to compete in WRC with Quattro, Delta S4, 205T16, RS200 etc.
However, the Group B Racing Class never materialized.
They did find a place for the 959 in the Paris-Dakar Rally since it was 4x4. And yes, LeMans.
Not a patch on the 288 GTO :)
The G is not for Geländewagen, because that would mean offroad car. It is for Geländegang which means offroad gear.
I do think that you would like the 959 better if you took it off road. It would be epic!
I haven't heard about a 959 in years. I used to have a poster on my wall of this car. Now looking at the body style and the way the wheel placement is I don't really care for its look. Still a nice car though.
The biggest bummer losing group B was we never saw the Ferrari 288 gto race, how about trying to drive one of them Sam????
10:20 Found your missing GoPro 😉
57K views should have 500K easy
Think the 959 is the one porche that Porsche lover want in their life. I chase for it in forza horizon 3 and 4 do to it's the best Porsche made. Other than the v10 carrara gt
Gelände as he says means off road, thus the 'G' Wagen: GeländeWagen
KillerHERTZ Mercedes Modifications does it actually stand for that?
@@sleepy.a3195 . G or "Gelände" in German translates to "terrain" in English.
