I grew up liking them because they were unique and different. We watched their show as kids. "One Less Bell to Answer" is my favorite song. Its haunting refrain is just something else. I saw them perform it on "It Takes A Thief" (the series) when I was a kid with Robert Wagner. I thought it made his show so much cooler! They were jammin on "Light Sings". That's a powerful message too!
I remember "back in the day " the group used to be criticised for not signing "soul" . I thought then (and still do ) they went way, way beyond singing just soul . They were unique.
Diana Ross didn't sing soul and became very rich because of it .😁..LOL! Where is it written that because you're black you have to sing soul music? Most popular forms of music were invented by black people, so the argument is immature, moot, shallow and silly anyway
MmmmHmmmm! The 5th NEVER disappoints. Those lavish harmonies. That wall of sound created by the five of them collectively. The way both Marilyn AND Billy work the stage when they sing leads. The control of the mic when they are in lead and how easily they blend in to join the backing vocals on the chorus or hooks. Marilyn going for ALL ranges of her money notes. The high ones AND the low ones. ❤️💫✨🤗
"Never My Love": Perhaps one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded by both "The Fifth Dimension" and "The Association"...and two totally different and awesome versions of this classic masterpiece !!! 🎶🌈 🎶
A beautiful group whom I love since the beginning. Marilyn was such a underrated vocal artist in my opinion. Love her voice and this group truly magical.
I so enjoy the new comments from listeners just now discovering the musical genius of decades past. This is what touched your parents' hearts and souls.
I was going to say that Light Sings is NOT an easy song to sing but they pulled it off. I was surprised it wasn't a bigger hit. The group didn't like it--I think Florence liked it but the others didn't.
I loved Billy's vocal . He had a fantastic soul/gospel/rock voice .He is up there with the very best as far as I'm concerned . I would have loved it if he had made a solo album sometime in his career.
Sometimes I sit here and just cry my eyes out. For me, this version "Never My Love", just defines just about everything decent I remember about growing up, in the 70's. My Dad died in 69, when I was 3 so my Grandparents really stepped us and took us all over NY and NJ, every weekend for family outings. Songs like these, were all over AM radio and that was the only radio allowed in my Grandfathers car. We all respected that too, even though it was "lame" at times, to us kids. We usually wound up singing along or making up words, as we'd laugh while flying down the freeways and highways. Mile by mile, they taught us respect and love. And now I get to enjoy those memories, till I can't any longer. Merry Christmas, to all.
Had the pleasure of opening for Marilyn and Billy in the very early 80s when hotels could afford two full musical acts to perform sometimes 3-4 nights a week. When kt was a respectable line of work and the accommodations were always excellent
Billy Davis is such a class act. Very content to be in the background on Never My Love to let Marilyn McCoo's vocals shine so brilliantly. You have to love Townson and McLemore's gentle vocals, too.
@@MsTexas73 A special word for Flo too shining her magical light. The 5th Dimension together were greater than the sum of their parts, as was proven when Mariyn and Billy left. And all the more incredible when you learn how they were literally thrown together almost randomly by LaMonte yet formed a choir of heavenly angels.
@MsTexas73, other than the 5 seconds within Black Patch, did LaMonte ever sing lead or even solo on any other 5th song? I know he always thought that he was the weakest singer in the group, but if it weren’t for him, there never would have been the incredible 5th Dimension.
@@vintagesupermarkets5210 Lamonte never sang any other lead part during the days of the original 5. But his bass vocals were integral to that classic sound they had.
@@vintagesupermarkets5210 Yes, all the line-up had a chance to individually shine on the magnificent The Declaration, Ron and Lamonte coming in towards the end when all five individually overlapped to fadeout singing "For their future security..." Lamonte proved what an accomplished solo singer he was later on when the 5D performed in the Broadway musical Ain't Misbehavin.
MDA Telethon--thank you immeasurably for placing this very rare clip of The 5th Dimension on UA-cam...and for all you do for the children and in the fight against Muscular Dystrophy. Today as the honored biographer of The Original 5th Dimension, I fondly remember that time in '71 as a young teen, when I waited & waited for your main billboard-ed feature, "The 5th" to appear...it was and is thrilling to see these live performances of the beloved "Light Sings," and Marilyn McCoo's solo turn with "Never My Love." I will be sharing this clip with Ms. McCoo, Mr. Davis, Ms. LaRue, and Mr. McLemore. Our Appreciation, Robert-Allan Arno
This version of "Never My Love" would make you stop and think. it is a bit more dramatic in nature. It would get your attention more than than the Association's version. Both versions are outstanding in nature from the Association and the 5th Dimension.
i am in awe hearing the Association who were produced by bones howe (as was 5D for many of their LPs). the single "Everything That Touches You" blows my sh*t sky high every time.

Beautiful "Sunshine Pop" Love those days, real music, beautiful dresses, no bling bling, just good music !
One of the "BEST" singing groups ever. Thanks dad, for introducing us to real authentic music. No auto tune, no nudity.
One of my first cassette tapes absolutely love them as a child , teen, adult..does something to my soul to hear their music. ❤
I remember "back in the day " the group used to be criticised for not signing "soul" . I thought then (and still do ) they went way, way beyond singing just soul . They were unique.
It's hard to believe now that they were accused of "selling out".

The 5th Dimension was truly a wonderful and talented group - I loved their sound!
Marilyn is an astonishing singer, I think one of the best ever.
Their rendition of Never my Love is the best one ever done. Great job!!!!
Incredible! The best group of all time ! Marilyn McCoo what a voice!
Why this woman is not more famous than what she is baffles me. What a gorgeous voice and what a beautiful woman. 🎉
Such a purity to music in this period...innocense lost is so evident in today's music. Corruption was totally by design.
@Robert Lee, Countertenor no fan of Cardi either. 😝

R.I.P. Ronald Townson 🙏
These people got the best voices I swear!

How great to have a live vocal for "light sings"!

The backing tracks were pre-recorded, but those vocals were 100% live!! Just more proof of what an amazing, talented group they were.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THE AMAZING AND GREAT THE 5th DIMENSION ~
Great talent and performers ! They don’t have great groups like this these days !!
Thank you for this great video,

Yes. And Marilyn does the same when Billy leads.
