The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Straight to my childhood. Warm memories of young parents. That is what this music does for me. Wonderful song but so much more
I was just a little kid, but I knew a class act when I saw it. I have ALWAYS thought of The Fifth Dimension as beautiful people making beautiful music, and I have not changed my opinion in 2024. Glorious.
Taped live at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, the 5th Dimension sing their hit single from 1967 (charting at 7 on the Billboard Hot 100). Their record of this song won a 1968 Grammy for Song of the Year and another Grammy for Record of the Year. Written by Jimmy Webb. They also sang "Monday, Monday" during this performance. The group's members are Ron Townson, Billy Davis Jr., Florence LaRue, Lamonte McLemore and Marilyn McCoo. Although they were frequent guests on the Sullivan show, this is the first time the group has been posted since the daily postings began three years ago. Thank you for this performance!
Great info Tom...thank you
@@GaryT1952 You're welcome, Gary!
Did it get a Grammy for the squarest song?😂
Besides from singing like an Angel, Marilyn McCoo is also an Angel of Beauty.
Right on! (as they used to say!) And those eyes, hypnotic!
and she still looks great. She and Billy celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on July 26, 2024.
...O-K, I'm gonna say it... *THIS BAND IS UNDERRATED AS HELL!!!* ..beautiful, talented, EBONY People singing, harmonizing, with style grace, & CLASS....and a special honor, to One of the most Beautiful Women on the Planet... *MISS MARILYN McCOO!* ...they truly deserve praise....TRULY......
I believe that Marilyn would enjoy the praise more if you had gotten her last name spelled as McCoo.
They weren't a band. A singing group.
The term “underrated” is just so trifling tired. I hate it! PWG
Billy and Marilyn are still inseparable ❤❤
5 of the most good looking performers equally killing it on this major breakthrough hit.
No trash just CLASS all the way. This was played all the time here in the D/FW area when I was a kid in the late 60's.
I was 12 years old when I first heard this. 65 years now and I love it even more today!
My Grandparents was young & my Uncles & Aunts grew up on their music. Marilyn Mccoo & Florence they're beautiful
Wow. Love the 5th Dimension. Beautiful harmony. They're so angelic!!
And so underrated.
Agree
This song is one of the earliest radio memories of my life, I literally grew old with it.
Ron really bringing it here. Saw the 5th live twice back in the day--they were always phenomenal. All stage presence and talent. Marilyn a knockout in every way--and that heavenly voice.
I saw them live in Nov '67. They were the halftime entertainment at a Harlem Globetrotters game!
I dig how live performances of Up, Up and Away show what a great singer Ron Townson was
Ron was hitting on all cylinders here. Amazing.
Beautiful "Sunshine Pop" Love those days, real music, beautiful dresses, no bling bling, just good music !
The 5th Dimension epitomized 1960s SoCal culture in so many ways; to those kids who had the privilege of growing up there, cherish the memories at the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.......
When I was a kid and the Fifth Dimension were getting air time, we derided them as "bubble gum". Took me about 50 years to get it right.
Great post! Florence is dressed for rain😀
It must be raining, up there. Jokes aside, this is a classic, and takes me right back to the day.
Thank God for whoever manages the playlist at the TWA Hotel; I might never have heard this gem if not for that. This should definitely be more regularly played across the board
Outstanding! One of my favorites. Surprisingly it was not a Billboard #1 song. However, they swept the Grammy awards that year!
The album of the same name was a rip-roaring top ten Billboard success for many weeks, so many people who would have bought the single opted to buy the album instead. Also, it spent no less than 4 weeks in 7th position which is no mean feat (don't forget 5D were competing with the likes of The Beatles, Elvis and The Rolling Stones at the time!).
That is REAL music and singing, right there, folks 🎶🎶🎤🎤
Wow! You can really hear Ron here so clearly. ❤❤❤❤
It's wonderful to see such a clear and vibrant live version of this wonderful 5D performance from The Ed Sullivan Show. A very ropey version of this footage overlaid with the original soundtrack has been available on You Tube for many years where it has been seen by over 3.2 million people, but to see it come to life like this is something truly to behold. All five members are simply dazzling and pristeen. You can tell they were riding the crest of a wave when they performed this magnificent Jimmy Webb song all those years ago. Simply iconic!
FINALLY! A Fifth Dimension performance has been uploaded to this channel. I love this group so much.
The 5th Dimension Great Singing Group !!!!! Great Song , Love it !!!!
Ed Sullivan had it all in the late 60s early 70s for rock soul pop country artist is was truly a wonderful show thanks for the memories
The 5th dimension is a class act. I saw them in Madison, WI and they put on an excellent show.
I never regret growing in the great times of 60,70,and 80's.This group was always the best ,we were signing this song when we were 12 and 13 yrs old .Such a great family time, school time, after school time.and the best was the real safety of our neighborhood and neighbors who all looked out, knew, kids were always outside by one of the homes etc etc etc no regrets ..Sadly generations now and if there is a future will never know...
Beautiful song and beautiful girls, beautiful time.
Gotta love this live! You can hear the beautiful character of their voices. And love the costumes. Florence's is especially interesting!
Those “wet-look” fashion statements were iconic!
Very nicely done, and again I really enjoyed hearing the full orchestra. 👏👏
And playing the original Marty Paich arrangement. I wonder if that’s also Bud Shank reprising the flute line?
Can't really explain the late 1960s, you had to be there. The music, the war, the riots, the assassinations, the counterculture, the Black Panthers, it was a wild time.
Thank you so much Andrew & Josh Solt. This has made my day such a happy song. Happy Anniversary Ed Sullivan Show 75 today ❤️
Phenomenal harmonies.! I always loved this song. "Up, Up & Away in my beautiful ballon," That's on my bucket list! 🎈
Happy Monday... thank you for sharing! 💖
So cool a group and talented singers they were-loved this hit of theirs! 🎉❤ 🎶
I met Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Junior and they are awesome people
This is the first time I have seen one of their performances live and not lip-synced. Great stuff!
I've seen this memorable performance several times on the old Sullivan show.
Love their sound !
Brilliant !
OMG VOcals live!! Incredible
I luv 5th Dimension since a little kid time.
Thank you for posting this video on my birthday. This is my favorite song.
So happy birthday!
At a time with the U.S. needed an especially upbeat, breezy and well-paced tune to transport us--even for a few minutes--from the problems of the day (Vietnam, etc.), the 5th Dimension and their writers provided it in the form of Up, Up and Away. Great song and great performance as shown here.
Definitely. Covering 'Aquarius' was a stroke of genius too. What else was 'Hair' but a chance to pretend the Sixties were a new beginning.
We could use a song like this again!
Very nice performance! Enjoyed it!
Wow! I watched this when it was uploaded 13 minutes ago! Amazing! I have been looking for this performance. I saw this in 1992 when the show went into syndication. There was a copy on UA-cam a while back but I could not find it. Then there was an edited version of THIS video with a studio recording of the song. I was disappointed, needless to say. I am glad this was uploaded! Thank you!
OH! Top notch - 100%. Thank you for Posting!
Amazing talent, class, beauty and elegance 💙💛
Great singers, great orchestra!
Also, The Johnny Mann Singers won a Grammy for their rendition of the said song.
Great vocals ..
Bonitos recuerdos.
Thanks for another up-lifting video. Have a nice day!
Excellent and LIVE!!
They are so good and the singing absolutely the Best !!!
This is smoothly and so sweet❤🎉10. 🎉😊Seppo from Finland again🎉😊
It's really the 5th dimension
I still live for them!
Songs from a time when many people still retained a certain naivety... music that today remains only for the exercise of nostalgia...
Such a great song and so professionally performed live!
SINCE OF THE SALVADOR THE 5TH DIMENSIÓN REPUBLIC.
Don't make them like this anymore, fantastic!
Magical!
Ohhh they made that song, honestly didn't know
💃🕺💃🕺💃🕺💃🕺
Muito bom! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Que saudades! ❤
Superb..
Love this song and had a teenage crush on Marilyn McCoo. Kudos also to the arranger!
YES I DO. 😅
If only they could dance..
Jimmy Webb, while still in his twenties, was s prolific songwriter. Up,Up and Away, Wichita Lineman, Galveston and of course, MacArthur Park to name a few.
By the time I get to Phoenix too. Brilliant writer
Marilyn, my unrequited love.
Love it 😇❤️🌺🌹
Been waiting for this to be posted for MONTHS!! Thank you!!
Este tema musical era el central de amor al estilo americano
THANKS ! I needed that !
Las chicas siempre muy chics en su vestir me gusta esta canción en esa época pensamos y sentimos que entramos en esa era 🌼🌼🌼🫠🤩
For any music buffs out there, a little help regarding some cool info about The 5th Dimension. Is it true that Johnny Rivers, of SECRET AGENT MAN fame, was a producer for their early records?🤔
'Go Where You Wanna Go' was the first single that Johnny Rivers produced for them. He was also in charge of some other early releases (with Marc Gordon as co-producer), such as 'Up, Up & Away' and 'Another Day, Another Heartache'.
Their very first single 'I'll Be Lovin' You Forever'/'Train, Keep On Movin' had been produced by Marc Gordon and Willie Hutchison.
The Fifth Dimension also covered Johnny Rivers' huge 1966 hit 'Poor Side Of Town' (B-side and LP/album track).
Yep. Motown turned them down after an audition, and Johnny signed them to his Soul City label. Johnny co-produced their debut LP, then the legendary Bones Howe took over for the next albums on Bell Records.
Marilyn was so fine!
Nice !😄
I know the two female singers were former beauty pageant contestants, but was one of the male vocalists a semi pro or minor league athlete, I believe a baseball player, but not sure.
Either way, incredible group, then and now!!
Theme from Childrens Miracle Network Telethon
Клево!!
I always liked these guys. I'd never seen them live, this is really, really good. I might have heard a minor rythmic glitch 2:12, and McCoo's voice is a bit hot on that last note. Otherwise it's flawless.
The need to share 3 microphones among 5 singers added an extra layer to preparation and logistics for the performance. Yet the 5th Dimension handled that aspect rather well.
I'm curious... Did Caesar's Palace 'sound system not have the ability to handle 5 microphones? Or is the answer one of practicality or safety? Would there have been distortion if the performers came too close to each other? Would 5 cords restrict mobility on stage?
I have seen many videos of this group, and they often share mics in this way. It might have been part of their choreography.
Marilyn was totally underrated as a vocalist. Better than Whitney and Aretha in my humble opinion.
Marilyn McCoo could really move man. Wow. Surprised they didn't just shoot her from the hips up back in those days lol
Agreed... just stunning! I wonder if the director did actually cut in at one point to avoid showing any more.
Oh yes, she could move! And those eyes... hypnotic!
It annoys me when they cut bits out of these Ed Sullivan videos ,such as Ed Sullivan actually introducing "The 5th Dimension". Still, its a great performance, and it will be also be fun seeing them sing "Carpet Man" in good quality from another Ed Sullivan show in the future.
What I find interesting in this performance is that they have only three mics to share among them. Microphones and sound engineering must have been more expensive in those days (?) Editorial note: I was 11 years old on that day. I probably watched it on TV with my parents.
Not just expensive, technologically out of reach. Live mix consoles just didn't have enough channels. Remember, they had to use up some channels to capture the orchestra. By 1968, I think they had 8-channel consoles, but think about trying to mic a whole orchestra and then a 5-person vocal group on only 8 channels! From looking at photos of them playing live in the mid 60s, they played live shows with much more limited equipment where they always had to share mics like this, so they had the routine down pat.
Them girls were gorgeous back then eh :)
More Rosemary Clooney!
I wonder what does the words to this song mean?.
They wanted to get high ?🤔
🤣🤣🤣
Couldn't the show's producers find them two more mics?
In a word, "No". Having lots of separate channels like that in 1968 on live TV was a dream for the future. The orchestra probably had a lot of mics, all delicately placed so they would get the right balance from the different instruments and sections, all set up by trial and error in different locations and distances, all to be mixed down into only a few channels at best. That's one of the reasons the early Beatle performances had George and Paul or Paul and John sharing a mic. It was good for stage effect, sure, but it also cut down on mic channels.
Definitely not from the Ed Sullivan Theater. 🙂
See Tom's comment above that was posted after you. It was an Ed Sullivan special in Vegas. :)
Actually singing live separates the real talent from the studio post production posers.
They skin looked bleached totally.
A good song, but the girls are singing out of their range on the bridge.
