I've been a huge Marilyn McCoo fan since I was a kid. Her voice is amazing! She is certainly “The voice” female; one of the most complete artists that ever existed. From Brazil!
Marilyn's performance on "It Takes A Thief" was flawless: in dynamics, artistry, and sheer fire in her soul. No other singer has ever come close. I've only known one other singer whose voice becomes even more beautiful when she sings fortissimo: Therese Noel.
I remember in 1969 when I was at Lee's Macrae college in North Carolina and we all drove to Charlotte, North Carolina to see The fifth dimension in concert. Only it was only the fourth dimension because the other female singer did not show up. Still we never noticed her absence because Marilyn's voice was so very powerful and after all she was the main lead singer of the group. My favorite has always been "one less bell to answer" . Her voice is superb and she should have become a much greater star .
The 5th Dimension should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of fame, they had as much of an influence on the sound of the '60s and frankly what came to be in the 70's as anyone else, they need to be in the Rock and roll Hall of Fame
I was fortunate about 10 years or so prior to this interview to be the band boy for my dad’s orchestra which was backing Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. at a county fair performance. After the rehearsal, I was allowed to hang out in the green room (which was actually a double wide trailer) with Marilyn and Billy in case they needed anything. We didn’t speak much because they were busy, but they were such nice people to everyone. No swearing as some do, just regular nice people who had been some of my favorite stars for years. And wow, she is gorgeous, and what a fantastic voice. One Less Bell has always been my favorite song of hers.
Always the consummate professional, Marilyn mentions Hal David as the lyricist who wrote “One Less Bell to Answer” and says it was not corny but perfect in putting how you feel when two lovers split. Wonderful woman.
And Burt Bacharach put those lyrics to music, based on a comment his wife, Angie Dickinson, made about the doorbell interrupting a dinner party at their house.
Tom Snyder was an idiot and insulting. “Two less bells to answer” Two less eggs to fry” He asked Marilyn if she thought this classic was dumb? He didn’t even understand the song meaning. My god she was 50 years old here. Has to be one of the great beauties of all time. What an amazing voice.
@Jeff Kelly Marilyn McCoo still tours, is on social media, and is 79, married for 53 years to the same man, one of her Fifth Dimension bandmates, Billy Davis Jr., who is 84. They stayed together through thick and thin. That is explained in their 2004 autobiography.
Yep. This is one of Tom's worst interviews. Why would Marilyn want to insult the songwriters who crafted these songs and helped to make the Fifth Dimension so successful?
Hi Marilyn. McCoo Very very beautiful singer I love hearing the Songs that you think I have something I like the Group was a very good Singing group and I really like hearing a group soon have a good voices and I’m gonna miss
@@waynej2608 That is why she was such a popular television hostess. She also sang cover songs on "Solid Gold" during much of the 1980s. She co-wrote an autobiography in 2004. She is a prominent Christian in the entertainment industry, which has had many positive influences on her and has remained active in the industry.
@@waynej2608 No, Marilyn McCoo was born on September 30, 1943 and this interview is, according to the copyright at the end of the show, from 1993, so she was, 50 years old at the time of the interview. Currently, she is 79 years old and is still on tour, looks and sounds good, is active on tours and on social media. She and her husband, Billy Davis Jr., who is 84 years old, met as part of The Fifth Dimension in the 1960s and have been married since 1969. They left to become a duet act in 1976 and had their own network television series in 1976 as well, which introduced a young comedian, Jay Leno, to television viewers. For 5 of the 8 years that the popular 1980 to 1988 nationally syndicated television music countdown series was on the air, she was a singing host or co-host, singing cover songs of the era and from her own discography. She continues to be a frequent television talk show guest. She and Billy published their autobiography in 2004. She survived a broken pelvis from a strange 2010 fall out of a chair and still sings, dances, and has a ministry. She and Billy released their first new album in over 30 years in 2021. Tom Snyder went on to do a CBS-TV interview show from 1995 to 1999. He died in 2007 at the age of 70. He would be 87 if still alive. He was a news anchor in the 1970s and had a 1973 to 1982 late night NBC-TV interview show called "The Tomorrow Show", which which might have been back on television reference that Marilyn McCoo had referred to in this interview. Her poise helped deal with all the statements and questions that were, at times, irreverent.
She was a superstar in her own right! Too humble to accept it. So concerned about the rest of the groups feelings. They knew she was the bread and butter. She should have done a Diana(Ross) but they had her feeling guilty about her becoming a "standout" performer. She gave the audience what they wanted...not just another R&B version of Wilson Pickett or an Operatic Wannabe like the others in the group. She was fresh and unique and " SHE" was the one the world wanted to headline. It showed with the sales of the songs where she leads in comparison to those her other group members led. They made them, but nobody would buy them. They should not have put a guilt trip on a young Marilyn and somebody should have helped her to reach her own superstardom she was destined for.
I never understood why she did not become a breakout solo star of the 1970s and early 1980s. She had the voice, the looks, the style, and professionalism.
Tom Snyder was an idiot from day one. I have no idea how he got his job. He always interrupted with inane comments that just made me cringe, while pretending he actually knew something. What a blowhard. But this interview demonstrates what a truly nice person Marilyn McCoo is, something I personally witnessed nearly 40 years ago. She is a gem as a person as well as a performer.
You really should look up who Tom Snyder is. Since you call him "the guy interviewing", it's clear you don't know. Sure, people made fun of him for his awkward, somewhat stilted social mannerisms. But he is one of the most respected and sought-after interviewers of all time. Even difficult people like John Lennon, agreed to be interviewed by him.
@@RobertLofrano She is 79 as of early 2023 and still actively tours and has a strong social media presence and a relatively new album and is remarkably active and well-preserved.
She’s tremendous. I remember when fellow Okie Jimmy Webb replaced their piano player for rehearsals and he said hey guys listen to this, Up Up and Away in my beautiful balloon, lol.
I have to be honest. When she hosted “Solid Gold” back in the 80s, I did not know that she used to be a famous singer Or a part of a band. I thought she is a beautiful co-host who can sing. It was recently did I found out about her past life.. Also, I thought she was married to Sammy Davis Jr. I was young then, that why I didn’t know these things.
OMG, if I knew they were in Springfield, Mass in 1994 I would have gone to see them. I live less than two hours away. Damn.....missed opportunity. EDIT: OMG, I just finished watching the remainder of this video. You are far and away one of the most gracious people on the face of this planet. How you remained so composed through that show is beyond me. I cannot finish watching it. My original comment was written with a bit of humor and truth but though I grew up a rock and roller, (60's 70's) you come to Boston, or anywhere, I'm buying a couple of tickets. I so miss your glorious voice. Brings back lots o memories, all good.
Who in the hell is Doreen - and why didn’t the show screeners vet her question before they put her on the air? Marilyn is the total package - talent, brains, beauty - and a class act all the way!
Agree that the interview was embarrassing-or, more precisely, Tom Snyder was embarrassing, as were the callers. Marilyn was so polite in the way she handled this fiasco. Imagine how someone with a more sarcastic personality would have handled this. Marilyn deserved better than to have to endure such nonsense.
