Instead of going to an adjacent chunk and repeating pie ray for fortress distance estimate, you should set the render distance to 1 chunk less than the spawner, and just walk into the adjacent chunks. Whichever direction shows the spawner coming up, will be the direction of the fortress. This could save quite some time, especially in speedruns

First: this is the only video that gave me just what I needed, and I was trying around 10. Second: I actually understood everything you say. This is amazing. Love you!
I haven't been able to get that to work. For some reason, the pie chart will hold on to data that's outside render as you move away from it, but will add to the data as new things come into render. I'm constantly resetting the pie chart to flush out the stuff that's no longer in render due to where I've traveled.
So I'm hunting for a dungeon and I have a bit of a problem. I have my render distance all the way on 2, but the dungeon is still within render. I'm strip mining looking for it, so it's not easy to triangulate. There's also no way to tell the Y level either. I want to know before I start mining in all directions if there's a thing for this? I traveled about 10 chunks, reset the pie chart multiple times, and the spawner entity still appeared. Could something be fooling me too?
No worries! It’s all good. Also, I was using Java version 1.16.1 (the most popular version used by speed runners at the time I created the video). I haven’t tested with other Java versions and don’t think it works with Bedrock.

I will play the bastion and then figure out where the fortress is. Thanks for the help in this vid, this will help everyone’s runs a lot
That's a great way to use it. When entering the nether, check for spawners. If you don't see anything within a comfortable distance you're willing to travel, you can bail. One thing to consider though, if there's a bastion nearby you might want to check again for a spawner after you have arrived at it but before you start routing it. If you don't see one, bail. If one shows up, you can decide then if it's too far. Of course, it could be a treasure bastion, so you'll want to check that as well.

I use a full size keyboard so I don’t have the same problem, but I did bind my F5 key to one of my spare buttons on my mouse (using the software that came with my mouse). Of course, you’ll need a mouse that supports this...
If I understand your question, you can press zero repeatedly until you are back at the root menu. You can reset what shows up by backing down your render distance by 4 or more. Finally, if you’re in the overworld, entities in spawn chunks may always show up, no matter what.
Have you tried turning down your render distance all the way to 2 to see if they go away? If I have my render distance set to 16+ I'll typically see a mob spawner no matter what too.

I can't change the render distance the way you were doing and I really do wish to know why?
The short answer is "it sort of works"... On a server, render distance is capped by the server admin so you'll never be able to search past the limit. Also, depending on the server settings, other players may render in chunks that you don't care about, which may give inaccurate readings.
It depends on the server, but most likely it won’t. Most servers render in a fixed amount of chunks around the player and adjusting you “render distance” really just changes your view distance. You’ll still be able to tell there’s something within rendered chunks, but determining direction and distance will be more difficult.

Press Shift+F3. Although, there are some issues with the pie chart in 1.17, it should show up.
@@boomerplayz1 yessir thx imma sub
@@jqtang9401 thanks!!!
Does anyone know how to resize the pie chart to its bigger, on my screen its incredibly small
Great video! the only question i have is how to select numbers above 9 on the pie chart.
A treasure chest spawned right beside a pillager outpost so now I have to dig for it from under ground
Hmm this doing pie-dar twice thing sounds kinda familiar.
Yeah, I still haven’t figured out if it’s a viable technique for the top speed runners. I can definitely see the village scanning being used, and it already is by several I watch, but trying to locate fortresses and strongholds is a bit dicey right now.
I can't change the render distance the way you were doing and I really do wish to know why?
I am grateful. Thanks for the explanation
Not enough views
You’re welcome! Thanks for the kind words!
Does this also work on a multiplayer server?
The short answer is "it sort of works"... On a server, render distance is capped by the server admin so you'll never be able to search past the limit. Also, depending on the server settings, other players may render in chunks that you don't care about, which may give inaccurate readings.
Does pi ray work in multiplayer?
It depends on the server, but most likely it won’t. Most servers render in a fixed amount of chunks around the player and adjusting you “render distance” really just changes your view distance. You’ll still be able to tell there’s something within rendered chunks, but determining direction and distance will be more difficult.
@@boomerplayz1 noted! thanks for responding :D
