  • A bearing broke on my 6" bench grinder. It is the Sunex model 5001A. I do not recommend this grinder. The bearing broke after maybe 2 hours of use. I was able to order a new 17x40x12 bearing (overnight via amazon prime) and in this video I show how to diagnose the problem and replace the bearing.

    Dad bought a broken grinder for a few bucks at an outdoor market. Power was going to it, and cap seemed ok. I could hear it hum but it wouldn't move at all. When I tried to rotate the wheel it was not smooth and wouldn't spin by itself if I tried to push it. I tried to open it to see inside for any damage, it wasn't shorted to ground. I could not figure out how to pull out the end caps. This video did help me understand how it's generally constructed. I never could get mine off by pounding just the endcap, but since I realized how the shaft runs, I ended up having to pound one side to push the other cap off. My bearings were covered with fine wood dust and was not moving at all. I sprayed the dust off with alcohol and the bearings were already spinning very well. I proceeded to wash it out with the alcohol as best as I could, and used compressed air to dry it out. Then poured fresh machine oil into the bearings, then stuffed the bearings with some grease. I put it back together, and to my surprise it turned on. The device also didn't have a switch, (switch was stolen/salvaged), so I used a pass through outlet that had a switch on it to turn it on and off.

    Your video not only fills a bare niche, you've done a great job in terms of quality. Audio and videography are great. Your demonstration and explanation, organization are superb. Thanks.

    Very nice informative Video . Just want to chip in my suggestion :
    a) Before removing the cap , always mark its rotation on the body with the marker pen and its alignment. This ensures that the cap fits in the way it was before opening . Sometimes putting them other way round will give you a hard time achieving smooth rotation.
    b) always hold the rotor shaft from the other end when you are tapping it,. It shouldn't fall from the assembly like it did. It can easily chip the enamel of the copper winding on the field on its way out ( Murphy's Law !! )
    c) Bearings have sizes written on them , In India , its usually a 4 digit number which denotes its outer and inner diameter. Much easier to get one from market. Though I agree measuring them with caliper just to confirm .
    d) Much safer and recommended to use Bearing pullers to remove them, unless they are lying relatively looser.
    Just my 2 cents . Thanks once again

    Two things..... Next time throw that armature shaft in the freezer for a few hours and then heat the bearing up. Some people place the bearing on a light bulb for awhile or use a heat gun. No more than about 250 degrees. If you need persuasion, drill a hole in the wood the size of the shaft and stick the shaft through. Much easier.....
    Also, don't split the case with a screw driver, just undo the retaining screws and knock the shaft from one side to unseat the bearing. Then you don't damage the case trying to pry it apart.

      heating the bearing will damage the rubber seal and melt the grease inside. The bearing's life will be reduced.

    I think you have a great idea and you have probably given some viewers confidence to rebuild their grinders instead of tossing them away / Craigslist .
    It's not rocket science once you have removed the covers and wheels and motor housing hardware you could have have made a puller out of the steel plate or even wood and three long bolts and nuts . You drill a 3 hole pattern on a plate thread a nut onto a bolt and through the plate and into where the shield attaches and all three holes . you simply crank down on each nut until the outer housing pull apart .
    What gets me is you had 2 bearing but only replaced one ? second a socket or pipe to insert the bearing on the shaft is a better option . you want to press the part that contacts the shaft only if you press the portion that contacts the housing you could damage the bearings .
    Let the hardware do the work if you screws aren't long enough get longer ones and press the outer housing using the hardware , not the mallet . Then again it's a 80 dollar grinder .
    That said bringing something back to life / service .....PRICELESS
    One thing I might add is wheres your safety protocol . Unplug your grinder wear PPE test your grinding wheel for tone to make sure they don't explode at 3600 RPMs
    good video

    You should have replaced both while you had it apart because obviously the other one's going to go too pretty soon would have made sense to replace both of them so we wouldn't have to take it apart again in the near future

    Does this bearing problem cause overheating and low rpm???

    • @SmallChangeArcade
      @SmallChangeArcade  7 років тому +1

      It probably could if the actual bearing case is damaged. The inside of my bearing was bad so it just caused a loud whine.

    • @karl0sCannIbaLFoetuS
      @karl0sCannIbaLFoetuS 7 років тому

      I changed the bearing and I thought about the wiring from coil, they were wrong, the two run/work wires were placed on the capacitor and the start wires were placed directly to AC. That's why the motor were running slow and with overheating. I changed it and now it runs normally fast without the heating problem. The only thing I couldn't fix is that when I run the grinder, it doesn't has the force to start spinning, so I do it myself then it runs normally.

    Would go back on easier if you drilled a hole in the piece of wood.
