  • my bench grinder hasn't been starting on its own lately so i thought ide show the internet one possible solution. this video applies to any motor that has a centrifugal clutch.
another possible failure point could be the motor start capacitor, comment down bellow if you would like to see me diagnose a faulty start capacitor in a future video.

    Dude,
    You are the man!
Got gifted an old one of these and after I replaced the shot out bearings, it would start smoking. Was just getting ready to toss it and buy a new one, when you taught me what that thing (clutch) was and what to do.
I always like old stuff rather than new, so thanks!!!👍🏻

yea that aux winding will start smoking real fast if powers applied to it too long. good save and im glad this video was able to save your bench grinder and preserve an old tool.

Great video and yes I would like to see you change a capacitor

Thank you for posting your video. I used the information to adjust the contact points at start up on a hydraulic oil pump motor that I was having trouble with on my auto scissor lift.

I have an old Jet bench grinder I bought new in about '99. Couple years ago the thing gave out a puff of smoke and never worked again, opened it up and the capacitor looked like it sprung a leak, I haven't replaced it yet, what are the odds that the clutch is the cause? Don't wanna spend $25 on a capacitor if there's another problem that will blow it out immediately.

What did you do to fix it exactly?

the problem was the centrifugal clutch wasn't far in enough to its contactors to close the circuit. so i moved the centrifugal clutches position (by loosening the two screws on the shaft) closer to its contactors closing the circuit. you just need a slight amount of force on the clutches contactors (enough to close the circuit).
basically the centrifugal clutches job is to open and close the auxiliary winding circuit to the start capacitor through a mechanism that works based on centrifugal force from the motor spinning. the reason why some ac induction motors need something to open and close the auxiliary winding circuit to the start capacitor is that the auxiliary winding is only needed for getting rotation started in the motor and if the auxiliary winding is powered for an extended period of time it will over heat.
