There is nothing more satisfying than buying an old bit of kit and fully refurbished it. Something that is broken or in a nasty condition and bringing it back to its glorious self. Great job
The trick is, at least for me and a handful of others, is to take pictures of what you do along the way. Thankfully for him he has a camera constantly taking those.
If your power switch seems to be tight and harder to turn than before the restoration, it may be due to the rubber washer under the black knob being installed upside down. There’s a nub that should be inserted facing into the hole where the switch shaft extends through the housing, you have it facing outwards. This makes the washer taller and may require extra effort to turn the switch on and off. Refer to the before image at 5:41 and the after reassembly image at 15:38. Easy fix, just remove the knob and flip the washer over. I did enjoy your video, that is a nice grinder you have there.
Beautiful restoration! I was glad you restored an old one instead of buying new. The older German power tools are usually so much better quality than you can get now. The color you repainted it in looked like a metallic modernized version of that green Russian equipment paint. Looks great! Fantastic job. It is always a pleasure to watch you work.
First one showed missing parts. Second one was complete. It's a working bench grinder ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxxC8HPnl24fu0XhMU_nbmWNEUoK1RMHXk . One thing I like alot is that it's surprisingly quiet. I don't feel like I'm sacrificing any rpms or power for the quietness either. All in all it's a very nice machine. No vibration whatsoever.
I have bought exact the same model as your's and also planning to restore it. It work's fine after these years, I think it has original stones on it. Only needs to be sandblasted and painted. Very good peace of machinery from the days, when real tools were made, not the junk from chinezium. Thank you for you video, I use it as some kind of tutorial for dissasembly. Good job, sir !
It's not a foolish dream to want the world to return to engineering tools that last longer than a stiff drink. Legacy products should not be considered a dirty word when they can be revitalised and perform the original purpose for which they were intended. Love your sustainable work. Respect.
Every week I cannot wait to see what you’re going to do next. Massive fan here from the UK, keep doing what you’re doing. Your experience and desire to fix things make a lot of people happy 🙂
16:49 you should really make sure to have metal to metal contact for earth wires. The screw is probably enough but it never hurts to be sure. Also you installed the steady rest bracket upside at the end they should be roughly horizontal from the spindle axis. I’m done nitpicking now :D Another great video. I do love your content.
I'm an electrician, not sure what you mean about the earth. Can you please explain in detail? Most frame earthed appliances which I have serviced are terminated similarly or use a double-nutted stud arrangement.
jimmytea1 He repainted the motor housing and base and I was suggesting that the best / safest method for the earth was to ensure contact with the metal base - by removing any paint / oxide at the point of attachment and having direct metal-to-metal contact.
What a coincidence, we still have the exact same one in the warehouse at my wife's village. It belonged to her grandfather who was a handyman. It is still functional and I sometimes use it to sharpen the gardening tools. Yours looks and sounds much better!
As a person completely removed from machinery and just general restoration, these videos provide me a weird little opening into all of that, without the pressure to know everything or anything. The only video-related comment I can make is DAMN, THAT METALLIC TEAL COLOR SLAPS!
Nice restoration mate, and a good thing you replaced that crusty old power cord. I have heard of many accidents due to bad power cord, so better safe than sorry.
I love your stack of extension pieces to get to the switch screws. Also how the washer fell into the washer tub when you tapped the motor spindle out. These things made me subscribe!
What do you mean by "over-built"? This bench grinder was made to last. We had those in our machine shops back in the day. Those things are quite sturdy.
Absolutely Brilliant Restoration! I REALLY Loved that paint color you used !!! It was Oddly Relaxing / Enjoyable watching you peel the masking tape off the painted items.
Absolutely great! I would have been very intimidated by how complex that looked, but you made it look not only easy but also oh so satisfying. The peeling of the tapes was especially pleasing. Well done!
One of the first things I learned in metal shop was to match a screw head slot with a proper size driver blade .. never a smaller/thinner blade. Makes for better screw head gripping and easier removal and tightening back in place.
See, this grinder was made when machines were built really well, the machine didn’t even walk away when you turned on the power. It just stood in its place. I’ve also always loved METABO’S large logo.
Really enjoyed this one. Stellar work as usual - on the restoration, as well as the video editing and clever use of humor. Not surprised in the slightest that your channel is blowing up right now. Cheers!
I enjoyed the video, although I had some issues with it. Good choice of paint following sandblasting, but there is too much vibration post restoration. I run 8 grinders/buffers and none need to be bolted down. The shaft washers at 08:03 and again at 22:19 are too big, installed in the wrong order, and are likely causing the vibration. No need to use lock washers on grinders/buffers.Toss them and get the proper size flat washers for the grinder wheel side. They need to fit snugly on the shaft. At 22:36, the nut on the buffing wheel side is installed correctly right up next to the flange cup. Did you lube or replace the shaft bearings? That looks to be a new grinding wheel at 22:15, but there is contamination on the face. Even new ones may need to be trued with a diamond wheel dresser. Try to use name plate rivets instead of 'pop' rivets and get screwdriver tips of the proper width for those fasteners.
Really admire your choice of machine, and the restoration is terrific. Dust donut under the switch knob went back in opposite to the way it came out. OK, pretty small potatoes.
I think that switching the tool rest support detracts from utility. Should be horizontal. And skip all the extra lock and plain washers on the shaft, completely. They probably make for less secure mounting, anyway. Definitely not original equipment. We would all feel better if we could have seen you test the old wheel before remounting it!
Very good job! I was given a similar one, one size smaller than yours. I sanded & repainted the outsides and also transfered one side to a polishing buffer because the disk cover on that side was already lost. (And I think I also changed the cable...). Those old machines from big brands are very durable and can do a very good job in my opinion!
You did a very nice restoration!, Please keep in mind that this is a high quallity out balanced machiene. To prevent the ballbarings from wearing and heavy vibrations, make use of two bench grinders. One with a hard and mild stone, the other with a steel hair wheel and a polish wheel. Keep the weight on both sides of the axle to an equal. or nearly equal. Good video!!!
lm astounded its such a good job, l love the color and the big fluffy wheel you put on the other side what an incredible useful add to all your restores, their grand.

I know we can always trust you to fully disassemble something you’re restoring! Nice job! (One critique at 6:55 - in English, if it’s powered by electricity you’d say “motor”. If it’s powered by combustion like diesel, petrol etc, you can use either “engine” or “motor” although “engine” would be the more proper term.)
I think it’s nice to restore the machine produced originally of excellent quality. A good choice of paint. It seems the rubber sleeve under the switch handle is set upside down. I'm sad about the blue plate. Well done job.

Very nice grinder. It could use one more item, an eye shield. Got to save them eyes so you can make more video’s.
I'm so glad you went for a classic tool color / finish. Love this so much, can't wait to see more!
Das ist ein gutes restoration ! Very good quality German tool !
If you balance the stone wheel, it won't vibrate anymore! Thanks for sharing !
First time meeting my father in law, we watched write a free if your videos. It was a pretty awesome way to bond. Thank you.
Aww. You even remade the german schematics and instructions on the back for extra satisfaction. I like that very much^^
When I take something apart I always have at least 3 spare screws. Great job Brother!
Fantastic restoration. Obviously, a much better machine than anything else you can buy new these days. Excellent work!

This is the most complex, AMAZING restoration that I have ever seen! BRAVO, and KUDOS! Well done, Sir.
Nice restoration. Much better then the boring restorations that use a rust effect to make the idea look worse then it does
This is going to touch people who know what it is to be loved and appreciate it on a whole other level.
this is why i love old machines, you can't kill them. A little bit of love and they come alive again.
Great restoration and old tool will last much longer then new one made in China 👍
Great resto on this one! Love the German stuff; it's almost always over-built. The hammered paint color is epic. Great choice!

Absolutely Brilliant Restoration! I REALLY Loved that paint color you used !!! It was Oddly Relaxing / Enjoyable watching you peel the masking tape off the painted items.
This restoration was so well done that time itself got confused and went back one hour. Neat!
That thing turned out absolutely beautiful. A very unique shade of green, with a nice subtle shine.
Hey im a german watcher and wow i like the way you try to keep the touch from the old grinder just wow proud to See so good work ^^
it's so neat that you replicated the instructional sticker on the bottom!! i loved that little detail so much
Excellent restoration. It made me so happy that you now have a new polishing wheel too!

I'm amazed how you’re always able to put stuff together after cleaning. I always end up with stuff left over and the thing not working ever again.
Hi Odd Tinkering! There's some guy uploading all you videos under the name "Best Relaxing Asmr". Just wanted to let you know👍 love your videos!
When he dropped the screw in the hole... I felt that 😔
Excellent restoration! Love those old bench grinders! Taken care of, they last a lifetime!
