My hair has been so flat and thin recently and all one length, the second I cut layers and face framing pieces my hair instantly looked and felt thicker

You are so good. Really the questions you ask are spot on. Never has a hairdresser ask me how long i wanted it wet or dry. And everytime i ended up much too short. And although i said be carefull my hair will be much shorter dry they will cut it too short. Or cut it to thin. Now i cut my own hair because of this. No more bad haircuts. It really warms my heart that you really want to look to the persons hair and make the most of it.

So happy I found this video, I have natural curly hair, always had it layered in this way until my hair stylist retired 🙄. Every stylist I have seen doesn't do it this way,they rather be quick & cut it straight up, grab a chunk of hair and straight up😡,don't like it,hard to find a stylist; well a good one😉...........
Because, technically, layering is actually held at 90 degrees or higher elevation snd cut. The "layers " here are technically graduation, because it was held below 45 degrees and cut. Not a ton of movement, but a "beveled" effect on the ends. It's not actually layering, but clients don't know that. So, as professionals we have to ask "where would you like to see the shortest layer in front and the back. I have clients who ask for "layers" like this and then say "It was still too heavy" after s couple of weeks. That's becayse graduation is a buuld up of weight. It's pretty. It's just not really layers. Her hair looked gorgeous.
