Always carry spare drain plugs
One in car
One in boat
And of course, one in the the hole 😅😅😅
Lol 😂
Definitely a good mindset to have!
Although, the one in the car doesn't do you any good after you leave the ramp and realize you're sinking 😂
Great job men !!!
What is it about the boat ramp that makes people suddenly loose all common sense and courtesy?
That's a really good question that I don't have an answer for
Lots of people and congestion. Few of them know how to handle a boat, even less how to backup a trailer. High stress brings out the crazy in them.
Because people are basically ass holes.
@@CaptKenOwe need a study
Loss of courtesy? We can split hairs, but when a random person comes up to you and says, "I need you to move out" as if they're some type of authority figure... you aren't going to respond too kindly. The issue was initiated when he basically demanded they move instead of asking politely.
They should immediately realize you had to get in there quickly with a sinking boat but they should have offered you assistance if you need it or not. Those are kind of that would be quick to blame others if it happened to them
They wouldn't have been helpful at all...did you see how long it took them to get into the other side of the dock? 😂
they didn't say anything, because they realized you'd be towing them home later after they blow up that cool sounding straight piped engine
Different boat
People can be so discourteous. They didn't know had the right away.
Every job costs a different amount so it doesn’t make sense to disclose the amount for this job.
My guess is people always think the rate is outrageous, so you avoid the negative comments.
Yep. Both parts of that are true.
If I state the cost of this job some people will think it's outrageous and I also don't want to be in the position where we quote someone a price for a job and they ask why it's more expensive than that job they saw on my channel
@@CaptKenO keep up the great work sir✌️
Thanks for the response. Always cool talking with YT creators. 👍
So he expects you to hang around while he hums and aahs about the situation. Let`s hope the payment was made before you arrived.
We had run a credit card for X dollars, but that was for a tow, not a boat that was sinking...and I wasn't going to tow a boat that was sinking under the original amount, so we would've refunded what we had already charged them
Did they have dead batteries that made the bilge pump inoperative? Were they taking on more than the pump could keep up with?
Not really sure on this one. Usually, it's taking on water, bilge pump keeps up until it drains the battery, and then it sinks
I would'nt of geussed a drain plug, But I didn't catch the back story. Noit their trailer and they will sit there and block you, Crazy
Drain plug wasn't my guess either...
The lady and guest on the boat were the rude ones. Luckily for me, the captain was the level headed one and moved. I don't think he said anything to me in during that whole situation
The hamster wheel audio effect is a you exclusive. it grows on ya.
Missing drain plug?
Correct!
Sounds like me the homeowner gave him some trash for work
The boat was on a lift before, but still didn't look like it was in great condition to begin with. That being said, the guy taking possession of the boat agreed to the terms, so to him it was worth it
Drain plug.
Correct Chuck!
I love your videos dude, but I have to disagree with you on the ramp.
it's not a disabled boat, it's a boat under tow.
I understand you do this for a living and you do good on the water by helping people - but your time does not worth more than anyone else.
you were not disabled and under no emergency - I'm sure if you were nice and asked nicely this would not have happened.
this one is on you, behaving a bit rude and entitled.
it's not you so keep spreading smiles and positivity on the water.
Rules of the road would disagree with you. A vessel under tow has right of way over pretty much every other vessel
You are wrong sir!
As a former motorcycle rider…..if you come across a stranded motorcyclist. You stop and help any way you can. In 1965, I towed a boat through Boca Inlet with my ten HP Evinrude. Being 16 I didn’t know better. But outboards were really unreliable back then, and we helped each other.. No towing companies, radios or cell phones. There was no on water LE or Coast Guard anywhere.
I think the tow boat captain should have ASKED them to move NOT tell they have to move out nobody likes to be told what to do
When I've got a trailer in the water and a boat that's sinking, I'm not asking
I find it amazing that here on the Great Lakes recreational boaters will go out of there way to help others at the ramp. Especially the elderly or the novices that just aren't ready yet or don't have the experience or correct equipment. Florida is the complete opposite, Its a argument or fight to get someone to lend a hand down there.
All depends on where you are. I worked a couple of summers in Chicago on Lake Michigan, and plenty of boaters there were assholes
that's crazy, you might need one of those other boats help. I never pass up the chance to tow someone with a nicer boat than mine lol
@@CaptKenOChicago is entirely different than almost everywhere else up here…
I would say that it was probably a missing plug.... I've seen it a few times. Helped a guy out by giving him my spare plug. Once I put it in for him, his bilge pump did the rest.
You'd be correct! I was told it had a plug in it...but either Betsy was mistaken or didn't want to admit she didn't have it in 🤦♂️
Good on you for helping a fellow in need! I'm sure he appreciated that!
The drive or shifter bellows
Used to work at a Fishing Resort and saw a customer launch his boat and take it out for a spin immediately after getting it in the water.
5 minutes later I see him come flying towards the launch site because he forgot to put the plug in his boat before launching it lmao.
Took about 3 minutes for the water to start splashing up past the floorboards and that's when he realized he forgot to put the plug in and just hauled ass back before his boat sunk lmao.
Imagine trying to dock there when there's already a trailer backed into the water. What were they going to do?
Exactly!
Always difficult waiting around for people to make up there mind, guess they fell you have nothing better to do
I usually don't mind since most of the jobs I get paid by the hour. This job was a flat rate and I had other jobs lined up after this one
My first guess was drain plug.
Than that was a good guess!
Unless there’s some compelling reason not to, I’ll give up my dock space and ramp turn to a disabled vessel. I’m dumbfounded by how these other boaters reacted to your request. Is that representative of the average boater in your area?
They did give up their spot, almost immediately. I think their initial reaction was mostly based on how the tow captain pulled up and sorta just ordered them to move.
That Four Winns makes a real nice little lake boat. But lake boats don't always make good salt water boats.
I can't speak to four winns as a whole, but yes, freshwater boats tend to have issues here
This is an example of why I have been saying that any boat over 18ft should REQUIRE a license.
Commercially we need to have a merchant Mariner license but federally they should implement a “light” version that skips the security aspects and medical cert to ensure every captain knows the rules of the road. Boater safety courses are OK but I promise half the boaters don’t even have that.
The boater safety course covers rules of the road. The main problem is that it's an open book test that takes like 30 min to complete
@@CaptKenO depends on the state, mine was proctored and not open book
I don't think it's by state...more of who administers the test. Most states follow the NASBLA accreditation, so they offer a free online test. There are plenty of places even in Florida that will charge people to take the same test, so it's important to do some research first!
@@CaptKenO no I’m born prior to 89 which in my state means I have to get a permit from a marina or other store selling TWRA licenses and this permit allows me to sit for a test which I have to take at a designated location and it is not open book.
@@CaptKenO it wasn’t hard per say but it also wasn’t easy 😂
classic tough guys, talk shit from the boat but when yall docked next to each other not much talking then LMAOOO clowns
Thanks sharing what a different tow would like and some the crazy people you come across. By the maybe I missed it but didnt hear the tow cost. Love the idots at the boat ramp, I know that one well...lol. Yes a lapel might would be great!
I purposely didn't state the cost in the video because it was a special rate. If someone heard that rate and then we go and quote our normal rate, they wouldn't be very happy
"witness the real-life challenges and adrenaline-pumping moments" ... Damn right, I was at the edge of my seat until you got the pump in! 😂 Great videos, love boats.
Haha! Thanks Perbilse!
I guarantee the woman got defensive and everyone else had to explain to her what was going on. She didn't want to apologize because then she has to accept she is wrong.
As a Capt. My self I'd have taken boat tag of the not so nice and when they ever put in a call either double charged then or black listed them. But that's just me. Come try some SAR out in Ocracoke:). It's some nasty work.
The dispatches don't come in with an FL number...and if they're members, we don't charge them anyways...but if I get on scene and recognize them...we'll see 🤔😂
I have enjoyed many of your videos. Just a thought, have you tried soft shackles on any recoveries? They are much easier to hook and unhook than D rings.
Keep up the good work!
I can't really say I have for salvages...🤷
I don't know of any operations that do use them, so I assume there's a good reason for it.
My guesses are they're more expensive than a similarly rated D ring, maybe don't hold up great in saltwater, and aren't abrasion resistant 🤷
Boating should be relaxing and enjoyable. People should be watching out for each other and act like they care. Why are so many being rude and nasty so often?
Because so many people are completely incompetent, boating can be very stressful for them.
I agree though. It should be fun and relaxing!
The people who become rude and nasty are frustrated at the ones who are always rude and nasty.
Sorry I had to edit while watching because to many long moments when nothing was happening so fast forward . Could this guy check the drain plug himself.
probably not
Cool ,Calm & Collective! Nice job. He probably got that boat for mowing their grass! He will regret it later!
Thanks Mike! I actually think he was more like a handyman, but not 100% sure
Not sure what to say about those people with the attitude problem, other than they should do better.
Man ,people there. No help to other boaters in need. …
Great job captain!
You weren’t being an ass that costumer was. Either you want it done or not 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks Iceman! That was kinda my thinking...especially since we had just been approved to do the job
🤦♂Sounds like a cluster all the way around, doesn't know what is wrong, where it is going, what he is going to do, but wants you to help. I'd have swam away quickly.
How come you guys don't carry pool noodles with you?
@@rterry66 because we're not a party boat? Why would we have those on board ?
Always the bay liners
To be fare, the person running the boat appeared to move, despite whatever "The Mouth" said.
EDIT: Never mind.
17:51 Drain plug missing
I guessed drain plug only because I've done it myself 🤦♂, but at least I realised as soon as I returned from parking the trailer, I just put the plug in & switched the bilge pump on.
Looks like a cool job
Not sure of what it CO$Ts to tow but the inbetween people involved are a problem.... lol, they need help but don't wanna pay &
I understand this as well as anyone but "Time IS Money", it's a simple Yea or Nay at this juncture & taking on water means it
won't get any better than now to recover the boat? Good job
The problem is that the person paying wasn't the one taking possession of the boat...so there was a communication problem between those parties
All your video's are fine and interesting.....My only suggestion would be to allow more time for the Print matter discussions that give more details .....so we can read them without stopping .... I'm on my third Bay liner, went from 25Foot to26 then to 28 used for transportation to and from the Channel Islands usually Catalina and Scuba Diving....When I was in the Army I was stationed as Coxswain on a 45" Patrol boat powered by Two 671 GMC Diesels in Alaska !!!!
Newer videos have longer caption time
Coming from a neutral perspective, your tone and attitude coming up to the ramp attracts a certain attitude. Perhaps just fine tuning what you say and how you say it might have a better outcome. None the less, great job. Cheers.
I'm not going to argue that I could've been nicer about it...but I wouldn't have had a "tone/attitude" if I didn't have to deal with this shit all the time 🤷
I thought your guys' trailer was their trailer and I was thinking that you would be in the wrong. However, I couldn't be more wrong. Thanks for the entertainment!
That would've made me an ass for sure...still justified, but definitely an ass. But if I didn't have the trailer in the water and they did, I wouldn't have made them back out anyway
I love watching boat videos. But, I'd never own one! RUGER
Good Job, Capt Ken, can't wait for the new audio and camera Yes!!! Ur such a logical guy, love it.👍🌈😁 oh no drain plug or bung. Dumb dumbs
Thanks Sea Wench!
Let me guess ….no plug ……
Correct!
I grew up around longboat pass during the 60's
I bet it looks a lot different now than it did back then
That was a few years ago. I bet everything looks completely different in my videos compared to back then
The drain plug mafia strikes again.
Should've bought a tumbler and they would've been all set 🤣
Time is money. It was rude to make you wait.
I'm surprised the owner didn't just float it out into the bay without the plug in it and let it become part of the reef.
Then they'd be liable for the environmental damage as well as the salvage, and that salvage rate would've been higher than what we were changing for initially
No drain plug, that would be stupid tax on the amount of the extra tow charge over a $20 plug
No kidding!
The plug maybe
Yep
Bottom of that boat must be gold because that is the only way it's worth anything.
lmao 🤣
It was probably worth something before it started sinking...but now, probably cost "bob" money to get rid of it
I prefer the johnson l4000 with a 2 inch hose… and 50Amp Anderson connectors, each of my boats has a fixed 12v outlet
That sounds like it'll drain you batteries pretty quickly...we have a gas pump that we use when we really need to move some water
@@CaptKenO we carry 3inch gas pumps as well
Your rule draws 14amps, the johnson draws 17amps
@SuperDivefreak ah ok. I was thinking with 50a connectors you were drawing around that
Feel bad for Bob, he got a junk boat for probably very valuable labor.
Yeah...I'm not sure the boat was worth whatever labor he did before it started sinking...and definitely not worth it after 😑
That's why I stay away from bartering unless I'm getting something much more valuable (at least to me) than what I'm trading
Rotten bellows.
Good guess Walker. I was thinking something along those lines as well!
Well, it looks like I’m not the only one who was going to say drain plug lol
Nope 😁
Someone was pissed off about loosing the boat and pulled the drain pug.
No one was losing a boat. "Betsy" wanted to get rid of it and seeing as she's the one who paid for it, definitely wasn't her
My dream job.
U switched boats. What happened to the new one u were using b4 ?
The videos aren't in order, but this is the new boat
run down to Harbor freight buy a pump
That wouldn't have helped with the boat taking on water and not having a working engine
The struggle is real…
I appreciate you investing in a quality Lapel microphone but it would be much appreciated if you could turn on the CLOSED CAPTIONS or type in your own so those who are interested can follow along in your conversations with people.
The captions are auto generated by UA-cam, and it seems to be based on the clarity of the audio for when it decides to do it or not...but I actually just got a higher quality rode mic, so maybe that'll help 🤷
@@CaptKenO I can see it is something performed by UA-cam but the icon itself is off on many of your videos.
Yes. I believe if the audio isn't clear enough, UA-cam more or less say f%=k it and doesn't do the auto captions, and therefore there won't be an option for you to turn it on because there's nothing there
@CaptKenO Thank you for clearing that up! I was led to believe, by another UA-camr, that it was up to the zyoutuber to turn them ON, I had no idea that Google could still override that capability. In THAT case I look forward to your new addition of wireless lapel mikes.
@Animalwon No problem! I think creators used to be able to turn them on and off, but UA-cam likes to control things how they see fit...so now the only options are to add your own as either a preloaded script, or to type it out as the video plays
Excellent video!
Thanks Silverstar!
Plug out!!!
I don't know anything about boats, But Why can't someone come up with a drain plug that acts like a CHECK-VALVE? water flows out but can't enter .
We have check valves on boats in different places (usually on deck drains...the problem with them is that they can fail. I've seen those fail more often than someone forgetting to put in a drain plug. My guess is that's why we use a solid plug instead of a check valve
@CaptKenO It was just a thought, Just in case you forget .
They do make them they are popular on jet skis
@@SlurpJ Those should be mandatory on all boats by the insurance company, Too many idiot boaters.
Nice job.
Thanks Brian!
There is more to this I feel??
More to which part???
drain plug
Yep 🤦
Missing plug, ive seen guys ram a small branch into the hole to get them back to dock before and we have those impatient people everywhere. Here in the uk at the marina where im moored (i always help out boat moves) we were craning in two boats into to slipway and we were forced to put them in the order they where on the hard standing (no room to move the crane around the first boat) the first boat went in (a 70ft widebeam narrowboat) and then pulled it to the end of the slipway to make room for the second. In an hour both boats in the water and the owner of the second boat wants to leave, we have no key for the widebeam to drive it out the slipway (owner on his way) he starts getting irrate we end up pulling the widebeam out by hand 3 guys on ropes me on the widebeam keeping it from hitting other boats (there is a 3-4 knot flow on the river) we pull it as far as we dare and let the irrate guy out he has a few feet of clearance to get through so i sat on the front of the widebeam to protect the widebeam and guide him out as he passes i have to push his stern over as he was about to hit the widebeam with my feet (on his rub rails) and he swears at me to keep my feet off his varish to which i reply better my feet than this steel bow! And with him gone we fight the river flow to get the boat back in the slipway and the guy saved probably half an hour by being an ass
Plug missing
Winner winner chicken dinner
Plug
Correct!
Drain plugs????
Yes 🤦
Sabotage or stupidity take your pick, bad situation regardless, think I would have bailed out of that one and let it sink
In fairness, Bob wasn't the one who was supposed to pay, but of course he didnt want the boat sinking while Betsy was making up her mind.
True, but a simple call to her would've resolved any confusion. I think he was a bit shocked that she decided to pay for the job since the boat was more or less junk
This guy rudely says: "Hey guys, I need you to move out", and then criticizes them for not having "common courtesy".
If they had common courtesy or sense I wouldn't have had to tell them to move
@@CaptKenO What is common sense to you might not be common sense to others who don't have your skillset and experience.
Folks sometimes need a brief explanation without the attitude. Try a little respect. You tend to under-communicate. I think you can do better.
They were no uncivil they just did not know what you needed.
If you consider yelling and cursing at me civil...then sure
No plug
You are correct
He said “I hope your wife dies of cancer” to you or that guy with the mud motor. Damn, what an angry person
My guess is it was to me...but yeah. Very angry
Glad I didn’t hear that comment. My wife died of cancer earlier this year.
@@bobstern7827 Sorry to hear that Bob
