I didn't realize that Mike had passed away. Very sorry to hear that! I grew up in the 70's and lived on the block behind his shop/crushers yard. I loved these trucks I would often sneak a peak through the sliding doors of the building it was in most of the time. The last time I saw Mike was in 2002 when he , like the good neighbor he was volunteered to spread a couple loads of gravel we'd had delivered to the 2 story brick house behind his shop and the old B&R auto parts before we sold it and moved. I live in Arkansas now and far to often when I'm thinking of home is when friends and neighbors pass. I see that Cartees came to your rescue. I hope that Bobby Cartee is doing well. I immediately recognized the truck in the thumbnail from 800mi away. I can also say that I got and still have a prototype gear drive starter for a Shovelhead from the skunkworks that the truck was parked at. Gene is probably the smartest feller I've ever dealt with. Lots of good people and memories in your video, keep em coming. My families thoughts and prayers are with Mike's son Kevin and daughter along with the remainder of friends and family....
Dude thanks for that video. I used to drive for Mike years ago. I helped his son close down TSAC and it was a sad time in my life. Mike was like the father I wouldve had if I could choose one. I actually helped Mike get that race truck out of storage and watched him drive it from the shop to Randy Cobbs shop. Btw that engine was a Silver 92 Detroit V8. Mike told me it dyno'd at 850hp but I dont remember the torque. It damn sure didnt sound like a diesel when I heard it run. It sounded more like a top fuel dragster lol.
60-70 model Chevrolet is my dream truck, my dad a 79 long wheel base Chevy and he sold it when I was a kid, I wish I could get that truck back man, I literally shed tears thinking about that truck.
Mike had a junkyard near Fairplay SC and the shop he used to work on the truck was in Seneca SC. Real good friends with two boys that used to work for him back in the day😎
Definitely a Detroit diesel!! If possible you should buy that beast and restore it to the original race glory it was built into. The racing series would be proud to have that rig make a tribute lap at there events!!
The two squarebody trucks in my driveway have old iron. My son's 84 GMC is powered by a little 520hp 383 Childers race engine. My 84 k5 had a 555hp 400ci iron block in. My son turns 16 in May it will be his first ride. Drop by and check it out.
i was just about ta comment ...lol...fer someone who loves old squarebodys so much...youd think he would kno the round key is fer the doors...lol ...that goes for all older gm models
Fer the Dale Earnhardt Square Body project. Maybe put a well balanced 427 big block V8 an bolt it to an AMC Rock Crusher 4 speed stick. Sling a posi trac 12 bolt Scottsdale rear end up under er an you would have a truly screaming square body. Trust me, i did the same with a rusty 75 C10 long bed 4x4.
This is the 3rd version of old 97 the first one that he won Atlanta with and featured in smokey and the bandit 2 was a 65 GMC that pulled his car crusher for a while. That truck was basically built around the motor . The 2nd #97 was a Peterbilt 359 and this video shows the last version before the G.A.T.R. series folded.
Seems like JR told me there was 3 of them trucks he said the. JYD was a strong rig the last time JR ran in ATL was the race the junkyard dog. #97. Won.
Ole JR Reed. Told me some stories bout that ole 97 junkyard dog I got a picture of ole 97 lined up rite behind. Ole dirty dozen both of was in the starting segments of Bandit 2. ole JR ( Charles Reed) Wolfman). Calls me every morning if y’all know him he sure got some stories bout them old racing days & the trucking days of real outlaw truckers.
@@BondoBen Does Gene own it now? I've been gone from that neck of the woods for so long, I guess that might not be his building anymore. Good luck in your quest, would make a heck of an addition to a fellers man cave...
I thought for anyone who's never seen this truck I'd share a link. This is Dover Delaware and Mike and this truck started on the Pole. Search out some of his Atlanta races I think there a little more exciting. I can't remember which races but Mike gets interviewed on a regular basis so check him out... ua-cam.com/video/r6acztfb45M/v-deo.html

Don't put a LS IN IT EVERYONE DOES IT BE DIFFERENT

put gauges in it some race truck.stick with 400 engine
Definitely put an LS in it bud
Rebuild the 400 Chevrolet
Music makes it borderline unwatchable
What ever you do please don't lower it in my opinion they look terrible
Take a 400 sbc to put a ls in? Thats idiotic
Can't even hear your dad talk because of the horrible music
