I decided to declutter my home. I filled up 5 heavy duty black bags with kitchen, decor, and clothing items that I did not use. I took the bags to Goodwill, and it feels so good to get rid of good items that someone else can use. I used to make garage sales, but inTexas it is so hot and humid. It is frustrating to do a garage sale. Nevertheless, I love the feeling of free clutter. I am not finished. I started another big hefty black bag. 😊☕️

Yeah, ive only done 1 garage sale in my life w/ daughter & it was a neighborhood one, where the advertising & licensing, etc was taken care of. It was actually quite fun & i sold the main things that i wanted to of my stuff. But i just don't have much for a good garage sale. Gave away most everything when i downsized from 4 bedrm to studio.

I think one of the reasons people end up with a lot of stuff is they don't know if/when they'll have the money to replace something so they keep extra on hand. That's much less of an issue when you have plenty of money and you're comfortable in the knowledge that you can replace items as needed and cover any emergencies that might come up. Also, some people are concerned about supply chain issues so they store several months' worth of items at a time.

Being a minimalist is the best!
I have been one for 5+ yrs.
I refuse to keep track of so much “inventory”!
I kept my cast iron. 2 fry pans, 1 cake/ casserole pan, 2 Dutch ovens as I make my own bread. We are a family of 4. Two teenage girls. We are all minimalists. We have a 10 item capsule wardrobe.
We now enjoy life instead of cleaning around the clutter way back in the day!

I have considered myself a prepper for a while. Preppers preach stack it to the roof. I am so tired of that mentality. I feel like u gave me permission to declutter my stuff. I started with the towels. Wash cloths, kitchen utensils, my bathroom cabinets all of them and the drawers. I still have more to go. In the back of my head I am second guessing myself. What if I need something I got rid of. But being able to use what I have is very nice. To open a cabinet and it is not packed is freeing in my brain. Thank you.

I was born a minimalist. I have always loved getting rid of stuff. Everything must be practical, functional, essential, and low maintenance. My home is extremely tidy and organized. Dishes and laundry are always done. But I HATE to clean. I do not want to spend my life scrubbing away. So my windows are cloudy, fridge, stove, fixtures aren't gleaming, kinda dusty here and there. Couple pieces furniture get wiped with a damp washcloth that then wipes out the sinks then goes into the washing machine. I hate dusting, so I have no coffee table and no dressers. Every piece of clothing is on a hangar. I have a hanging 5 shelf cloth thing that holds socks and underwear. I am not artistic so don't have many decorations. No longer have fussy husband, and kids have their own homes. Living on my own terms!

I used to work at a book warehouse, in the returns department. Every so often, they would allow us to just help ourselves to bins filled with books which had a black marker across the bottom pages of the book. That indicated that they would be sold at a discount. I worked there for three years, before they moved, and I gleaned hundreds of books, which I loved. But then at one point, I realized that I had to unload most of them. I did donate to local libraries; because they have a yearly "sale" for people to come and browse and get books for practically nothing. I now have a book collection that looks similar to yours! I am a total bookworm, but after I read something I now donate it. They can become a burden.

Happy birthday 🎉. Today is also my BDay. I don't sell any of my items that I declutter. Due to a tornado I've had to empty a two bedroom two bath two living area with kitchenette/dining including ALL kitchen items/appliances . I gave EVERYTHING to the Humane Society. Hardest being the Amish furniture that I got 40 years ago and I'm fixing to give up a complete bedrooms worth of furniture that is made of entirely PLUM. My best friend old enough to be my mother sold me this furniture when she was moving into assisted living, it was purchased before I was even born. I'm blessed to live at a lake, I have secondary progressive MS so all of my skis pull behinds, Ski-Doos are all gone now again to MS. I reap rewards from declutter but I also reap rewards from paying it forward.

One question - did you hold onto your bread machine? Are you still making your own bread? Also, I've been on the same downsizing journey this year. I parted with heirlooms. My parents and siblings are all gone now, the last one having passed a few months ago. I've kept a few small things, but 85% of the heirlooms were either sold or passed on to more distant relatives. I shed a few tears, but I'm not going to live forever, and I have no kids to pass them to (my niece and nephews didn't want them, either!). Now, I try to do acts of kindness in my family's memory rather than burden my apartment with things I was keeping out of a sense of duty. I also brought some of the older, antique heirlooms to our county museum where my family originated. I thought that was also a good way to honor my family. I enjoyed the things while I had them, but it's time for me to let go of most of it. I'm beginning to realize a greater sense of peace and less stress due to trying to manage a small apartment with way too much stuff. It's helping me to more easily concentrate on my new frugal lifestyle. I think my family would be in favor of that.

On your family heirloom furniture, my advice is take some pictures of it and "store it" in someone else's house.
I just got rid of my parent's desk which was one of their first pieces of furniture they bought but I rarely used it in the 20+ years I had it. There was allot of emotion attachment to it so I asked my brother and my nieces and nephews if they wanted it, nope. I then asked my parents if they wanted it...nope. This taught me the emotional attachment was just in my mind.
I gave it to someone (stranger) who could use it, no regrets other than not doing it sooner.

I had a one-man house cleaning business over 20 years ago, and, even though I no longer do that for a living, I still like a clean, tidy home. And I too usually only clean with nothing more than basic dish soap.
In the kitchen I just put a few drops into some hot water to clean counters, stove, and cabinets.
Same in bathroom. Put some hot water in the bathroom sink with a bit of dish soap to clean entire bathroom. Including, yes, the mirror too. (Hint...professional window cleaners do NOT clean windows with Windex. They clean them with dish soap and water.) Dish soap also does just great for keeping the toilet bowl clean.
I use Ivory dish soap because, unlike many dish soaps, it does NOT contain chelating-agents, which will damage granite countertops.
I can also very much relate to having just a few plates, forks, etc.
I literally get mentally stressed when surrounded and encumbered by too much bric-a-brac. Minimalism is an absolute requirement for my mental well-being and sense of peace.

I have always Loved the library. When I have had to move in the past, the first thing I do after moving in is get a library card - even before changing my driver’s license. I also use the Free Little Libraries in my neighborhood. Once I finish a book, I trade it for a new one. Great video!

My husband and I have been going the rounds of me and my 'stuff' for a good while now. YOU have just won me over to his side. Well, to be honest, I already was there. But this video has just helped me overcome my problem: OVERWHELM. Listening to you got my brain started on how to 'get over it' and move out the 'stuff' and move forward. Thanks so much for sharing your minimalist journey.

I keep 4 plates and 4 bowls for two people. We don't entertain so there was no need for extra dishes. My big problem is the books. I have a large two-story house with plenty of storage so it's easy for collections to get out of hand. I'm presently working on weeding out the books to a manageable number and taking the ones I don't want to the local library.

Vinegar is also good to use instead of fabric softener. And just 2 tablespoons of detergent is enough. Too much soap leaves a residue on your clothes making them smell funky, also messes up your washing machine.

I totally agree... stock only what you will eat on a regular basis and rotate, You should have at least a years worth of food in case of any emergency. I would never buy the freeze dried prep they sell. There are alot of foods out there that store for a long time that are actually good and nutritious. Good to go back to the old fashioned basics with canning, drying. Just like Little House on the Prairie days

I’m actually working on my photos like you said. I do a lot of family history and I have some photos from the 1800s that are really important to me. But most of my family could care less. Finally I have a 17-year-old granddaughter who is an old soul. She is so fascinated by my pictures and Genealogy that I have been motivated to clean up my stuff and put it in an organized fashion for her. I scan things that are really important anyway and she wants the paper photos to make her own albums so that’s what I’m doing to declutter my photos. I’d have to say that I’m super excited that there’s actually someone that has an interest that can pass along family to the next generation.

We Americans have way too much stuff! I'm in my 70s and recently retired. Trying to declutter my "stuff". Hundreds of books, tapes, dvds, cds, kitchen gadgets, etc. What a waste of money plus try I ng to "manage" all the stuff. It will take me a year to go through everything and getting rid of most of it. I want a nice clean simple home and lifestyle. I envy you for being smart at a young age. Hopefully one day soon I will be smart too (at a much older age).

My biggest vice is clothing and footwear. In high school I hit 5'10" and was super skinny and shoe size was 10.5. I'm 62 now and back in the 70s there were no women's shoes over size 10 without online ordering (or had to buy mens sneakers)and all pants and shirt/jacket sleeves were short. So, when I find anything that fits now I buy many multiples ! Hard to get out of that mindset. I pretty much have enough clothes now to last me for many years!

That's alright. I'd never make it on just a couple pairs of pants or tops. Too many situations of stains, spots, wear, etc. It's good to have a few extra items. As an older
person I know that times can change: you might not have money for a new pair if one of the three pair you own gets destroyed. There can be shortages, lack of inventory
in your size (as you know!), civil unrest, rationing, etc. I don't understand minimalists who actually get rid of clothes that fit and they already paid money for. When one
item wears out, go the the extra stash, and don't buy anything new.

When my grandfather died my mom, sister and I saved sooo many things from furniture to jewelry. Much of it stayed in storage while we lived our lives and bought things that matched our style. In the last few years I've realized my sister and I are the last ones to remember my grandparents and our kids will have no attachment to all those things and will just see it as stuff they have to get rid of when we're gone. With that thinking, after clearing it with my sis, I got rid of most of those keepsakes, trusting someone who needs them will get use out of them and freeing me of the responsibility of them. As for family photos, I've given those to my adult daughter already.

I would love to see a video on feeding and caring for dogs as cheaply as possible. Call me crazy, but I see this as being just as addicting as becoming a hoarder in that both have a goal. I relate to a LOT of what you're saying which I did not expect! My goal is to be able to find and be able to USE what I actually have and with having an abundance, it's difficult to put it lightly. I'm taking on a new attitude after seeing this - go through it like I'm moving to a 1 BR apt. That should get me on track. Love your videos, as always! :)

You have really got me thinking about cleaning out this mess - I thought I was a minimalist, but you have shown me I have a long way to go.
I’ve been watching you for a while now - your financial advice is invaluable!! As of a few months ago, I have ZERO debt now!!!! I cut out all the extras and am now not living paycheck to paycheck. So when you say cut down on clutter in your home - I definitely listen. More people should do the same!! You say what others are too scared to.

Equal parts vinegar + dish soap, say half a spray bottle with both and the remainder add water for a shower door/tub cleaner. This works just as good as scrubbing bubbles. Too bad I just recently discovered this. I really hated buying $crubbing bubbles that would only be good for 2 bathroom cleanings. Good job on the minimalism I need to work on that.

When you are moving a distance, you may want to consider the cost of a moving van versus the cost of replacing inexpensive used furniture and possessions. I have moved taking only what would fit in my car. Hopefully you have only a few sentimental items like pictures that go in the car. Then you want your clothing and your toiletries and whatever you need for your pets . If there is no room for your bedding that is OK . When you arrive at your new location , you buy a blow up bed and some cheap bedding and a pillow . You buy a patio chair to sit on . The next day you buy inexpensive cookware and dishes because you want to be able to cook as soon as possible to save money and eat healthier than fast food . Then you slowly start accumulating the possessions you want in your new home . There is something freeing about starting out fresh like that .

I'm doing the Swedish Death Cleaning thing. No, I am not dying but think about what kids would have to go through when I do die. Photos that only I know who's in the photo, ancestors that even I have no idea who they are...tossed after calling family and asking if anyone wants them (no one did). I'm a book person but making sure the kids are aware that they are allowed to toss my books if they don't want them or any of my other stuff after I'm gone. No need to pass on clutter. Slowly whittling down the stuff so they don't have to deal with it after I'm gone. Now I have the harder job of NOT replacing it all which is a mental issue but one I can deal with.

My minimalist journey started in my silverware drawer too. I was watching a minimal mom video and realized I had two sets of silverware all while vaguely remembering my sister in law mentioning she didn't have a complete set for her family of 5. Doh!! I immediately asked if she wanted my second set and she said yes!! Problem solved and I haven't looked back.
