It's very simple. You have to know your camera first. You can't shoot every camera the same way. Some sensors have more DR below mid gray , some have more above mid gray, so you have to learn to expose for your subject, and your sensor, if you want to maximize dynamic range.
True. The R5 seems to have added a LOT of dynamic range in the shadows, with a bit less in the highlights (according to some). Some cameras like the Fuji medium format have very good highlight dynamic range (with a bit less in the shadows).
In the alleyway, the Sony and Canon indeed look "almost identical" [6:09]. Yet the Canon retains far more detail within the highlights-the two yellow, luminous spheres-and there's no attempt to recover the Sony's lost detail.
Yes, Sony looks blown at times before process, but it does recover very good. I really like the Canon files for the color and feel like throwing my Sony at a wall for its everything other than the files. Other day my finger hit the lens release and OFF IT WENT! to the floor!! Stupid design. How do you put a lens release button on a small body with ergo issues already RIGHT where the shutter hand and fingers rest??!! Insane. Then you got the menus, then the electronics, then the sensor dust, then the SD card door, screen.....But, the R5 is not priced for a Still shooter, its priced for both video and still. They should have made the R6 with 8K video strong and charged more for that and lower the R5 without top video features. Satisfy both buyers, and if you need both, you would be able to afford both. I can see Canon do a R5M2 as a still forward model in a couple years perhaps.
@@philindeblanc, as to highlight recovery, I meant that Manny failed to objectively compare. With Sony, I've likewise had problems with sensor dust. At $3900, the R5 is priced low, its 8K video virtually included free.
It’s great working with a model like this who knows what she’s doing. Most of my photo shoots are families and weddings, so I primarily work with non-models. All beautiful people, but not models. The few times I’ve worked with a model, like the person in this video, it’s amazing. They hit their marks, know how to stand and position their body in all the right angles. Such body awareness to know how to stand so perfectly for the camera is hard to do, it’s a trained skill. It’s night and day. I worked with this one model who always took my focal length into consideration because she was keeping the compression of the lens in mind and based that on how she posed. Amazing. Being a good model, like the person in this video, is very hard work.
Great video Manny! It's hilarious when people claim, 'oh, I just get it right in camera'. These are people who don't even know what dynamic range is. I always ask them, 'which part of the scene did you correctly expose in camera? At a given aperture/ISO if you meter off the model you get one shutter speed, meter off the sky you get a much higher shutter speed, meter off the shadows a slower shutter speed. You can only set one shutter speed, which one did you use? Do you lift shadows in post or recover highlights? You do?! Then you're relying on adequate dynamic range to successfully do so'. Anyone who claims they get it right in camera probably has blown out highlights and/or lost shadow details and doesn't even realise it.
Or they carry around flashes and strobes everywhere (like Jason Lanier), which can be annoying, and the results often don't look as good as just recovering shadows later. I much prefer the more natural look that Manny and Irene get with their work (even when Manny uses a flash it still looks natural) .
Depending on what you do and your skills, you can get it right in camera..That's exactly how much of photography was done, and now we have the benefit of making changes with a computer/software...I shot last weekend in the street and the lighting alone killed all of the shots,so I would have had to use a computer, and software to make them decent.
This video is 🔥 ! Dynamic range is super important. The 5DIV dynamic range was more than enough for anything I ever shot (lots of shadow pulling) but the EOS-R suffered in that area with shadow pattern noise, colour shifts and some banding. I've played with the R5 files and yeah, the dynamic range is now the best of any camera I've ever used for photo, and now with the video overheating issue being mostly remedied with the new firmwares, even better. . In this day and age there is no reason to be brand jumping anymore.

You are so right about the importance of dynamic range. It is even more true if you shoot landscapes. Many times with moving water, you cannot use exposure bracketing. Capturing the full range of light with one exposure is magic.
Manny, THANK YOU for highlighting the DR!! So many reviewers just do not cover that in detail and it's VERY important for my style. I, like you, left Canon (5D MKIII), but for the Nikon D810 which at the time (and still today) has mind-blowing DR. I have been using Nikon for stills and Canon APSC for video for years - waiting...and waiting...and waiting for either Canon to up their DR game or Nikon to develop usable video. Now the Z8/9 is here, but also the R5 has just recently dropped $500 in price. I think I'm heading back to Canon thanks to seeing that the DR levels have FINALLY gotten to a usable level for my needs. Great work!!
So if I am an hobbiest photographer but looking to get into more of a small business photography, doing portraits maybe weddings? what camera would you recommend on starting out? Saying there’s only a $2500 budget. I’ve used Canon and Nikon. But now this video has me thinking Sony?
Thank you so much Manny for the informative and helpful comparative camera review! Just may I ask, what kind of adopter you've used to utilize canon lens on Sony camera (2':35")? Thank you again and good luck!
Catching up on Manny videos. I believe that this is the most beautiful model I've ever seen in one of your videos. Almost makes we want to move back to Chicago...ALMOST. Thanks for the review. I've been a Canon shooter for over 30 years and I'm really excited about this camera. I feel that they are starting to listen again.
Great video! I’m like you and need the flexibility. I left Canon for Sony years ago and now just left Sony for the Canon R6. I’m in love. Canon finally caught up.
The crazy thing is Canon did this in one generation from R to R5/6. I picked up the R with the RF 50/85 and RF 15-35/70-200. The R5 is in another league coming from the R. Loving Canon. They're back in the game!
I really want that 200mm how do you feel it is now that you’ve used it more. I ordered the r5 waiting for it. But how does it work in for videos? The combination of the r5 and the 200mm. It’s my dream lens
Ironically I went with Fuji and I don’t regret it. I personally don’t need an over specced camera to get the job done. If the job requires it I’ll rent it. But in most cases XT3 and Fuji lenses is enough for me. Also by the comments the subject is the most important matter. Random comment coming from a previous A7RIII shooter...
I know so many photographers who jumped to the Fuji line because it's just unbelievable what you get with their ompact sensor. At the end of the day, you just need to know the limits.
Manny ALWAYS coming through with that FIRE!!!!!! Trust me I've been waiting fo rthis EXACT video ever since the announcement! thanks a bunch man! I need to save up some money and hopefully I can get a new R5/6

I just got my R5 in last Friday... 2 months on Pre-Order!! I also shoot on the move, no external lights - just natural light. Also depend on dynamic range to help in situations of shadows and harsh light. Great video!
Maybe it is only me but ... well the A7R3 is nearly 3 years old (release OCT 2017)! well done canon catching up after 3 Years... don't get me wrong... the R5 is a good camera but I think its not worth the hype... Tested the R6 vs my a7iii ...I think the a7iii performed so much better than the R6 ...

I don't know if you'll read this or answer it. but to what extent do you think luminar will replace an artist work. by then end will people forget about photographers and end up using the AI instead???
Not a fan of what the canon was doing to the blacks. Look better on the sony. Devins pants at @6:25 even Diana pants at @7:25 had a warm tint across the blacks... where as the sony's blacks look "black" when you boosted the shadows. It's almost as if Canon exaggerate the warmer tones to make things pop, but it also effects other colors.
nice video - beautiful photos - nor worried about the comparison so much, but we did just upgrade to the R5 from 5DIV and it was cool to see you show off what we can expect from it. and props to your models - as you say, they know what they are doing!
Manny, as always, love your work. Just a quick question, from a wedding photographer's perspective, how bearable is the weight of the R6/6 along with lens etc for whole day of shooting???
Manny, thanks for another great post. Really interested to see these two cameras compared - great coverage of a great topic. I was wondering if you were able to try to process the Canon files in Capture One Pro and if so, was the recovery any different. Thanks again for your post.
Nice shots with the 200mm lens, It would be cool to see a comparison between your 200 prime and a Sony or Sigma 135 f1.8. mainly a bokeh, blur and compression comparison.
Sony's sensor tech is still pretty much where it was 2 years ago. (Or more). The A7Riv came out 1 year ago but apart from adding more pixels made no real advancements (noise was worse than A7riii). So for that reason I think its fair enough to compare these cameras. When Sony put out their next "brand new" sensor it will e time to re evaluate for sure.
yep Sony/Nikon rule the recovery camp (until now), but any Canon even the old ones has better results (output color and tone quality in particular) when the situation lighting is thought out shooting people.
My last Canon camera was a 5dMIV and I had same kind of issues about dynamic range and ISO performance, then I switched to Sony and I don't have these issues anymore also improving the time i spend editing... but hey this r5 seems phenomenal. I'm glad Canon finally is there!
It seems that Canon's highlights recovery is better than Sony's. If you look at the sky around 7:55 in the video before Manny's face kick in, the sky on Canon is more detailed and "blue-ish" than Sony's which means the Canon can reduce overexposed areas way more effectively than Sony does, despite the larger count of megapixels (which should usually affect dynamic range due to the shrunk pixels to fit onto the same sized sensor.)
Yo just wanna say I bought one of your preset packs recently and they're head & shoulders above all the other one's I've ever bought. Worth every penny, really appreciate the quality man
Great to see this video after considering the EOS R & A7R3 for nature photography after some good pricing on both for boxing week. I am a Canon shooter, but have been struggling as I get more into bird photography and trying to recover detail for exposure correction, and cropping in. I also use Lightroom for my workflow. My challenge is using all my EF mount glass on E mount. I'm going to try the Metabones V EF-E and cross my fingers. I would like to use the EOS R5, but in Canada it is more than double the A7R3.

6:29 the R5 highlights look better to my eye and her hair looks "richer".
Great job Manny. What a timely companion. I watched all the ads for you bro !
Canon does so well with skin tones. Do you have a video for best Sony portrait color settings?
You are so right about the importance of dynamic range. It is even more true if you shoot landscapes. Many times with moving water, you cannot use exposure bracketing. Capturing the full range of light with one exposure is magic.
2:33 bro... why you drop the camera with no cover on the bag!!!??? a bunch of dust, particles and everything is getting into the sensor! :(((
Manny, THANK YOU for highlighting the DR!!
Great video as always and great sponsor plug!
Let's face it, we are all here for this hot girl and slow-motion 😍😁
So if I am an hobbiest photographer but looking to get into more of a small business photography, doing portraits maybe weddings? what camera would you recommend on starting out? Saying there’s only a $2500 budget. I’ve used Canon and Nikon. But now this video has me thinking Sony?
Thank you so much Manny for the informative and helpful comparative camera review! Just may I ask, what kind of adopter you've used to utilize canon lens on Sony camera (2':35")? Thank you again and good luck!
In the immortal words of Benjamin Ortega, that model, WOW WOW WOW 😍
Catching up on Manny videos. I believe that this is the most beautiful model I've ever seen in one of your videos. Almost makes we want to move back to Chicago...ALMOST. Thanks for the review. I've been a Canon shooter for over 30 years and I'm really excited about this camera. I feel that they are starting to listen again.
Great video! I’m like you and need the flexibility. I left Canon for Sony years ago and now just left Sony for the Canon R6. I’m in love. Canon finally caught up.
dang that model is banging!!!............. yes, Devin is cute too. :)
The crazy thing is Canon did this in one generation from R to R5/6. I picked up the R with the RF 50/85 and RF 15-35/70-200. The R5 is in another league coming from the R. Loving Canon. They're back in the game!
Chazyfizzlez I am with you. I traded the R in today for the R6 and bought the R5 first day.
Nicely done. I'm finding similar things
Just picked up the XT4 with the XF16-55mm and I'm blown away.
Say hello to Brazil Manny! Thanks for all you done til today helping me in every single video you posted!
Is your white balance the same and both sensors calibrated? If not this should be done before talking about the Sony/canon color difference
Manny ALWAYS coming through with that FIRE!!!!!!
Trust me I've been waiting fo rthis EXACT video ever since the announcement! thanks a bunch man! I need to save up some money and hopefully I can get a new R5/6
Manny.... Are your presets available on desktop and mobile when purchased?? Or just desktop or just mobile?
Might just be your most amazing model yet !!!!
Crazy nice photos!!! Where were there taking in Chicago?
I use a 5d mark iv looking for a upgrade... And was inclined towards buying sony a7riv but now with canon launching r5 I'm confused between both... I do outdoor potraits... Also would like to know if A7 RIII or canon R6 could do the same job so I could save some money and buy a better lens... Would be great if yiu can suggest?
1:03 "I'm getting some reflecting light from you" failed to notice the neckless on her chest haha
I just got my R5 in last Friday... 2 months on Pre-Order!! I also shoot on the move, no external lights - just natural light. Also depend on dynamic range to help in situations of shadows and harsh light. Great video!
Hey bro my girlfriend want a camera and I’m having trouble choosing between the two which one you recommend for pics as well as videos
During your test with the R5, did you ever find the camera overheating that might spoil your mood for shooting still photos/video concurrently? Tq
File flexibility is everything cause even sometimes you can have everything right in camera and the metering in camera can be off.
My first time watching you. Very impressed. You know your stuff.
What was the verdict on retrieving the highlights? I use an a7iii and have saved 2+ overexposed skies.
Haha, good point about 3 years.
That RIII sensor holds its own today. I’ll take that sensor over anything on the market under 50mp in 2020
All I heard was “this is why I love my Sony files”
Do you sell a preset for the canon? The colors on that 4k 120 are 🔥🔥🔥
Y’all simping over the model in the comments lmao, this mans wife is better looking than any model that’s ever been featured on the channel, she got absolutely nothing to worry about. 👍🏻
That photo at 3:23 is great. Well done, Manny.
“The lines bro the lines, look at that autofocus omg...” yeah i was thinkin the same thing ;) fr tho appreciate the comparison, would love to see you work with an R6 and see how much the MP makes a difference in your real world experience and workflow.
Dang the comparison.. Who's really here for those bangin models Manny be landin!
Hi! Thanks for this video! Manny, I'll be so grateful if you could upload and share with me (only for personal use - to compare in editing) RAW files of 2 photos (from Canon and Sony) you showed at 05:30 (with sunflowers). If you still have them of course. Thank you in advance!
love these tutorials. its helping me to decide my next camera. love your attention to dynamic range, it def matters.
Manny love all your videos... you do awesome work.
I’ve been looking to see if you ever made a comparison between the 50mm Planer 1.4 and the sigma 1.4 art. If you had to pick what lens is better if you had money for either. Thanks
Hi Manny
Thank you for your transparency .your working it ,many negative comments are said because they are always negative your right on when you said many people don'tt agree.Love tour passion .From one Ortiz in Southern Cal great job Manny.
I got the R6 and the highlights recovery is excellent!
I don't know if you'll read this or answer it. but to what extent do you think luminar will replace an artist work. by then end will people forget about photographers and end up using the AI instead???
Manny Great work ! Love your videos. Keep it up. Your helping me a lot. Thank you.
Manny I've been using natural lighting forever. What do you suggest is a good starter lighting setup for a sony full frame?
The Canon looks really great Manny they have really done amazing things lately
Not a fan of what the canon was doing to the blacks. Look better on the sony. Devins pants at @6:25 even Diana pants at @7:25 had a warm tint across the blacks... where as the sony's blacks look "black" when you boosted the shadows. It's almost as if Canon exaggerate the warmer tones to make things pop, but it also effects other colors.
Nice video with a great comparison, enjoyed watching it. Manny, your videos are getting better and better, nicely done! Keep it up :)
nice video - beautiful photos - nor worried about the comparison so much, but we did just upgrade to the R5 from 5DIV and it was cool to see you show off what we can expect from it. and props to your models - as you say, they know what they are doing!
Good stuff as usual dude, love your pics
That thumbnail is gonna get you SO many views! Love your work my man!
Great video Manny! And you are right on the dynamic range and its importance!
Hey Julia could you do a comparison between the Sony A7RIV vs the A7RIII
Manny, as always, love your work. Just a quick question, from a wedding photographer's perspective, how bearable is the weight of the R6/6 along with lens etc for whole day of shooting???
That ending though. Superb photos my dear sir.
Manny, thanks for another great post. Really interested to see these two cameras compared - great coverage of a great topic. I was wondering if you were able to try to process the Canon files in Capture One Pro and if so, was the recovery any different. Thanks again for your post.
Amazing! I just wish you could shoot the video in 4K - watching on a 5K iMac the pics are blurred :(
Funny to say, video footage looks better than photos. Who is your camera person@mannyortiz ?
Nice shots with the 200mm lens, It would be cool to see a comparison between your 200 prime and a Sony or Sigma 135 f1.8. mainly a bokeh, blur and compression comparison.
As always bro pretty awesome vid....BUT why compare this brand new Canon Camera to a camera that came out two years ago?
Anyway that model was fire 🔥
If you look at the sky around 7:55 in the video before Manny's face kick in, the sky on Canon is more detailed and "blue-ish" than Sony's which means the Canon can reduce overexposed areas way more effectively than Sony does, despite the larger count of megapixels (which should usually affect dynamic range due to the shrunk pixels to fit onto the same sized sensor.)
great job as always manny
Yo just wanna say I bought one of your preset packs recently and they're head & shoulders above all the other one's I've ever bought. Worth every penny, really appreciate the quality man
Hell yeah bro. That means a lot 🤟
You are only seeing the green tint now ? Canon has a magenta tint also
Hello I am a photographer and I am new to this field
I have more interest in modeling as well as fashion shoot which is the best Sony camera for it?
heyy, could you do the same type of video with the Canon EOS R6? I really like to know if you can do the same.
Thank you!
1:03 The reflecting light is coming from them European moon ballons Manny... gotta get subjects with less reflecting light lol
