    I find the Blade Runner style pretty nice and easy to pull off. The dark tones and dense volumetrics give you a lot of freedom to not care that much about details, yet have everything look convincing and cool because the darkness & fog help your brain fill out the empty spaces and lack of detailing.
    Nice work on this one!

    Great fun!
    I have been a huge fan of this movie for decades. I recently learned several new things about the FX photography for this film (40yrs later!) watching Adam Savage's appearance on The Corridor Crew on UA-cam (FX guys). You captured the essence of the shots really well. Only 2 things really stood out for me in a way that told me something was off: those blinking lights you added at the end stood out as not integrated into the depth and needed blurring or more effect from the mist. The only other feeling was of the sky deep BG which you don't seem to ever mention. There is a kind of permanent overcast but sunset at the horizon feel in Blade Runner's big shots.
    With your progress becoming apparent each time soon enough you'll be tricking us by showing the reference footage you used to make a scene only to then reveal that THAT footage is ALSO your recreation! Maybe that could be a good challenge/game for everyone in the 3D artist community: A then B shots shown People have to pick the real one.
    Keep up the great vids. You remain very inspiring to a newbie to 3D stuff like myself.

    What did you do between 6:58 and 6:59 to get this randomized pattern for the city

    • @DECODEDVFX
      @DECODEDVFX  2 роки тому

      It's a basic geometry nodes set-up. I just made a grid that instanced a different model from the collection at each point of the grid. Then I gave each one a random rotation. I used the math node's snapping function to ensure that the city blocks would only rotate at 90 degree angles.

    I mean you got close but if you really wanted to go all the way.
    Some procedural cloud data wouldn't have hurt along with the proper HDRI mapping. Not only that but doing a pass with some atmospheric volume might have helped as well as I feel your initial pass is a little too shiny. To really add on to the grunge and dystopia. That and a lot of the lighting just doesn't feel real to the scene especially with the fire effect not generating a light. It wouldn't have hurt to put an invisible light that flickers on and off with the fire. Have you ever looked into proxy data for your models you can have like a bajillion polygons without it slowing your scene down. This was a good attempt although I feel like you could have pushed further in a few places. Your eyeball shots I just wanna say chef's kiss mwah!
    Also, I'm not saying I could do any better but these are just things that I felt were "off". I totally understand you had a deadline but like two more days and this could have been perfect. Good luck and keep doing what you do.

    • @DECODEDVFX
      @DECODEDVFX  3 роки тому

      Yeah, a lot of stuff you mentioned was actually in the render but it either didn't show up, or it was absorbed by the volumetrics. For instance each flame has a flickering point light at it's base, which you can see at 13:14 onwards.
      Volumetics tend to swallow up any light at this scale. When the lightening strikes I timed a 500,000 watt point light to go off, illuminating the buildings. But in the final render you can barely see it.

May I ask when you make a video, would you record your voice first and cut recordings or you are voice overing the edit? • @DECODEDVFX
      @DECODEDVFX  3 роки тому

      Thanks.
      I usually cut together a basic timeline from the footage I've recorded, then I go through that and make bullet points about the parts I want to cover. Once I've got that, I record the audio. Then it's just a case of going through the audio line by line and matching it up to the appropriate footage. I usually have to record extra stuff to fill in the blanks.
      It isn't a very fast way to work, but it's the most efficient workflow I've found for the style of video I make. Most videos take me 5-10 hours to edit.

      Blender's volumetric system zaps a lot of the vibrancy out of lights (That's accurate to how light behaves in the real world). The movie shots didn't look like that because it's a miniature, so all of the lights are actually quite close to the camera. I could have replicated that look by compositing all of the lights onto the image in post I suppose, but I liked the way it looked as it was.
