    Mercedes reliability advantage in late turbo hybrid era meant their overtake mode's were much more free to extract power from them. to the point Fia targeted them directly. Now engine must be tuned to race spec. only battery boost is allowed

      Overtake mode is battery boost. The reason overtake mode isn't used as often is because it drains the battery much more quickly. In qualifying, the deployment the electrical boost (both MGU-H and K) is pre-mapped to deliver boost in certain section of the track. This is done to ensure battery last the entire lap. Overtake mode drains it in like, half a lap or less at full power, which is useless in qualifying.
      What you're thinking of is fuel trim. And that's called engine modes. Engine modes/fuel trim and still be changed during a race in case oddities in the engine sensors are detected but it should not increase power, merely change driveability.

    Overtake deploys the max amount of electric power, it doesn't alter the engine power, that is done by engine mapping and engine mapping is determined on a race to race basis or if there is a substantial amount of wear or heat in the engine.

    • @yelistener

      Doesn't overtake mode allow the exhaust gases to bypass thebturbo through the wastegate, so that there's lesser back pressure meaning maximum ICE power? It also means the MGU-H will have to spin the turbo.

      Since 2022 season the party modes and overtake modes, ala merc 2021 interlagos monster is gone. They have to stick with a power mode on the icu. If it is for a whole weekend or they have some leaniency and need to keep that mode for a certain majority.
      The electric motors they have full control over which mode and power in the race but it is not as powerful as icu+ electrics in a overtake party mode.

    I never knew about an "overtake" mode. As a driver I'd be holding onto that button all the time. I dont want a neutered engine. Give me full power the entire time! Such a dumb idea.

    I was such a big F1 fan in 1999 I went to Suzuka. But there are so many rule changes, bans and ridiculous technicalities I have absolutely no interest in it any longer.

      it was like that even before. active suspencion ban. ground effect ban. both before 99. it is with ban that you get teams extract evrithing from what remains

    Is that a thing that used to happen back in the old days? Saving the engine?

    • @Majima_Nowhere
      @Majima_Nowhere 9 місяців тому

      Still happens, though engine modes were kinda banned a couple years ago. The Overtake button now only uses battery power. Still, F1 engines only last a few races before they need to be replaced. Before the V6s, it was more common to see engines blow up mid race.
      You might occasionally see a frontrunner driver who had a bad start to the race retire the car even if they can still continue, just to avoid wearing the car's parts out for no points.

      since they introduced a limit on how many engine can get used in a year there is saving engines. before you burn one for the qualy and another one for the race

    New to F1 - If the engine runs at full power for qualifying, does this mean typically the fastest lap times are in qualifying? As they conserve the battery throughout the entirety of the actual race?

    • @russko118
      @russko118 9 місяців тому +1

      they are faster in quali, before 2021 it was even more difference nowadays is mosty weight of the fuel (you have to do the full race on a full tank, quali is with minimal fuel) and tire management (in quali you don't do it so you go even faster). battery recharges under breacking (not only but mostly) so the battery recharges and can be deployed for extra power
