There’s been some amazing branding over the years. When I bought my first camera it had to be a Canon just because of the William’s early 90s livery. When I smoked I had rothmans royals again because of the Williams sponsorship. Quite powerful, you can see why they pay so much money to have it on the cars.
When Williams won their first race at Silverstone in 1979, their main sponsor was Saudia Airlines with 'Fly Saudia' on the back wing. Before the podium ceremony Frank sent up a note to winner Clay Regazzoni telling him not to drink the champagne as drinking alcohol on prime time telly might offend the sponsor. Despite being the owner of a fledgling team, good old Frank's business sense told him what his priorities were.
Marlboro is probably one of the most iconic sponsors in Formula 1. That amazing red and white McLaren from the 70's to the 90's and of course, Michael Schumacher's Ferrari with Marlboro branding on. Shame it's been banned now
why shame? it's advertising that doesn't work on adults who already either are smokers or not... so it actually works best on youngsters. pretty nefarious if you ask me.

@Arif Al Amin I’m pretty sure most countries have been in conflict with other countries, for most of their history. Just look at the UK, France, or Germany, for example. The reason why Russia is not being raced at is because it is invading another nation for power, while the US’s recent wars were over terrorism and the protection of American citizens from these terrorists. Unfortunately, the war lasted longer than it should, but now the US has pulled back its troops. In your mind, the only countries that could host F1 are Sweden and Switzerland. Sorry, but just calling other people “maniacs” just because they don’t agree with your viewpoint is pretty ridiculous.

Worth pointing out Lucky Strike were involved with the then 500cc, now MotoGP, Suzuki team in the early 90s. As was, hilariously enough, Rothmans as welll. Was there a series Rothmans didn't at least try to end up in? Also no. I instantly thought of the Arrows for some reason and then in quick succession, the Jordans, with the hornets and snakes. That team had some hella talented artists working for them. Gotta love the Bitten and Hissen, and the Buzzin Hornets one too. Also, yes, Red Bull was, for a time, banned in France too. Rothmans was the title sponsor for the Honda factory team in the old 500 cc from 1981 to 1993 I think. Repsol, the current sponsor, replaced them in 94 when they got the Williams sponsorship. Marlboro sponsored Roberts Yamaha (the de facto factory team for Yamaha for many years) and, later, Ducati.
I think Marlboro and Rothmans liveries have become so iconic in motorsports that a piece of history is lost by banning them. It's not like most people don't already know cigarettes and alcohol are bad
but what would be the point of sponsoring a team for "nostalgia" when the side effect of doing so is encouraging harmful consumption of products they sell edit: he changed it, he said he wanted to bring the sponsors back for nostalgia

The most well known (and likely only) racing in the world where they never had a car was Nascar, because Winston signed as a series sponsor with exclusive rights, only RJ Reynolds brands could be advertised (that was their move when the FCC banned their direct ads on TV after they made an ad with Fred and Barney from The Flinstones). Their presence was huge because they backed major teams that won almost all the time. McLaren in F1, Penske in Indycar, Peter Brock in the old ATCC, I think Toyota in group B rally, Yamaha in the old 500 cc.
I still find it amazing that advertising is as valuable as it is. It just proves how easily brainwashed people are. If someone is willing to pay $160,000,000 just to put a logo on an F1 car, you don't just think it will draw people to your product, you expect to make a profit off your investment. It's scary how easy this works on people. I guess it also explains why so many conspiracy theories are believed and how people end up in cults without intending to. The first tobacco company/livery of any note was the first sponsor as you showed. JP Gold Leaf, then the JPS black & gold Lotus of the late 70s. It's so iconic that the modern "Lotus"/Renault team copied the colours. IIRC wasn't it voted to be the most beautiful livery ever or something like that? Tbh, I'd rather see non-tobacco products on the side of cars (especially the ones to help you give up) than any gambling ads. Gambling causes millions of families a great deal of misery throughout the world, especially in certain countries where it's virtually as commonplace as eating. But even where it's regulated by governments (yet still allowed, such as the UK), many families are destroyed every year by one member's gambling addiction. I don't know where I heard this, and I won't stand by it if someone has the actual data and can prove it wrong (it just seems to make sense to me), that gambling has more negative effects on the whole family than a single person drinking too much or smoking (as long as they don't smoke in the same room as kids). As debts pile up, gamblers will beg, borrow and steal from the immediate family, then the extended family, until someone says no or they all run out of money - in some cases they give initially because they're lied to regarding why the money is required (bills, a sudden breakdown of necessary appliances, school supplies...) then it's to "save the gambler" (and maybe their immediate family) from "violent people", who may not even exist. Emotional blackmail is an incredibly powerful weapon. Not only will the gambler and their own spouse & kids lose their home, but other family members can end up losing theirs too. And desperation can lead to violent acts in much the same way alcohol can turn otherwise nice people into monsters. F1, the FIA and world governments should work together on what is acceptable and what is dangerous to advertise. Tobacco, alcohol and gambling should be high on the "banned" list IMHO.

And how alcohol is banned at certain circuits, even though I probably know why. Still, Im pretty sure alcohol is harmless compared to tobacco, crypto and gambling.
I thought gambling advertisement would be banned in Brazil. Well, it's not like our government would go out of their way and bother F1 to not show such sponsors. But except for lottery gambling is illegal. But the money rules, F1 won't just ban something if they know the government will do nothing to them, even if the advertisement is about something illegal

Yes but what if u win tho?
SportPesa was title sponsor of Racing Point in 2019, wasn't it a bet company?
Speaking of tobacco and cigarette advertisements, didn’t the Colin McRae subaru have a cigarette ad that they had to take off?
Yep. State Express 555. They replaced it with three commas in places where the advertising was banned.
@@Quaker763Or bananas as well wasn't it?
Found an old CD of the (admittedly awful) Rally Challenge (not to be confused with the much better and later released Rallisport Challenge), which had a lot of 555 branding in it, up to and including, a biography of the company, and shots of the 555 sponsored Scooby for menu backgrounds, now granted when you had the menus up you couldn't see a lot of it
If you grew up in the 80's, when you see a pack of Marlboro Red's even today, you see F1.
It didn't begin with Lotus, it was Team Gunston (another tobacco brand) at the 1968 South African GP. Team Lotus then began wearing sponsorship in the start of the following Tasman Series before the iconic Gold Leaf Team Lotus appeared at Levin
I think that alcohol and tobacco companies have some of the most legendary and best looking paint schemes in racing.
3:11 Whats the name of the programm on the man's right shoulder ?
Marlboro is featured on certain tracks... Not only just the cars
I used to like when Busweiser were replaced with Sea World and Busch Gardens theme parks as they used to both be owned by Ansheiser-Busch
Tabacco was banned years ago. So, tobacco is the only productm end of video. BAR was a team in the 1960s. Nothing to do with cigarrettes.
Need to get crypto/NFTs on the list
then investing should be on the list... which would mean no more sponsors because there for investors more than every day people.
I still have no idea why he mentioned NFTs
The best bit is the Ferarri red now is soooo much better than previous years
Ferrari still makes good promotion for Marlboro. The logo is just a pack of Marlboro held at a 45 degree angle and a little twist to not make it look like the Marlboro logo. (The bend in the top of the white triangle instead of a pointy corner.
Fun fact, if the idiots at Codacons didn’t sue Ferrari for the Mission Winnow part of the livery many of fellow Italian enthusiasts(myself included) wouldn’t even know that was something associated with cigarette brands because we honestly didn’t care a bit, we just thought the green looked awful and that was it.
But hey, they had to make a big case out of it and - the irony - now basically everyone knows what Mission Winnow is and that it’s related to smoking(or its alternatives) 🤦🏻♂️
I really really hate betting sponsors in any sport. Shouldn't be allowed at all.

I was just about to pop off about smoking being banned
Funny that tabacco is banned but crypto scams are allowed.
And how alcohol is banned at certain circuits, even though I probably know why.
Still, Im pretty sure alcohol is harmless compared to tobacco, crypto and gambling.
And gambling companies are allowed courtesy of Stake sponsoring Sauber
the irony of alchohol ads being banned in russia of all places
Hold a second......
What about Benson & Hedges and Mild Seven (now Mevius) has now banned in F1.
They should ban RedBull sponsorship. This lemonade contains less coffein than a cup of coffee and contains huge amount of industrial sugar.
If you ban every questionable product from F1, there won't be much left.
Bring mission winnow back the logo was amazing on the ferrari
having to change the colors of a stripe on your clothes is as petty as something can get
Bunch of a waste of money, I literally can't recall a sponsor on a car and with that my choice in purchases clearly has not been influenced.
The alcohol one suprises me a bit
Ironic, you can't have a sponsor that promotes using vapes instead of cigarettes, but you can have sponsors that promote money laundering (crypto)
So money laundering isn't done through FIAT money?
Did you know, that percentage wise crypto is used less for illegal activity than FIAT money?
I get the push to make Tobacoo advertisements illegal as well as alcohol but both are major sponsers in racing history. TBH, I can see Marijuana going legal and potentially Malboro branded joints being a thing.
What an excellent informative video, cheers 👍
JPS comes into my mind Gold on black, this was the most beautifull car of all
Lol I like your WTF1 paint on the racer. I think it fits perfect :-)
Just saying, before it was bar you can trace them back to Tyrell
They have taken away the cool cigarette sponsors, in race refueling, v8, v10 and v12 engines.
Yeah they have, and F1 has never been better
not surprised at the absurdity of the advertising laws in any country now.
Can’t forget T-minus which actually put Arrows out of business
