08 Narrow Body here with full bolt ons, running on E85 and stock engine with 95k miles, Im perfectly happy where im at 450 WHP. dont have any issues and its been running like a champ for 8 months now.
Imported a JDM Hawkeye STI (15 year import in Canada) and left the EJ207 bone stock. 300whp is fine if you upgrade how you put the power down. Cusco front and rear diffs (1 and 1.5 way), RA-R/Spec-C suspension, PSS9 bilstein coil-overs, group-N bushings/mounts, 250 tread wear tires. I've done both big power and handling mods and I gotta say the handling route is way funner, so what if you don't make the hp hero numbers you'll catch them in the corners
The EJ207 is an amazing engine and can take a more power in stock form than the EJ25. Many running over 500bhp (crank power) and have been for years no issues. The liners are much thicker than the EJ25 liners
If I ever wanted to get upgrades done to my car, I would only ever send it to you. The most local Subaru "specialist" shop that I took my 14' GR body to quoted me 6 grand for a short block, after I took it in to diagnose a misfire quoting poor compression in the misfire cylinder. (I compression tested all four cylinders. They're fine.) I took the car to another shop further north, run by two dudes. They told me the misfire was caused by loss of current in my MAP's pigtail wires. (No idea if this is true either but yeah). Costs $100. Please take your car to more than one place, people.
What I'd did was save or stock up on bolt ons first and install most of all on 1 go. Didn't fiddle with the turbo or fueling until I was for sure what it could handle. Big power was never the goal. 7 yrs later, still holding on 💪. Original motor. Why? Because I listened to smeedia 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽. Awesome videos, Tanner. I sadly missed your last live stream. Hope this hatch lasts 🤞🏼.
Been watching your channel forever and have always loved the turbo builds. I’ve owned a 1998 L wagon for about 4 years now, all black not two tone, with a 257 shortblock and 98 legacy dual cam heads. Running phase 1 MAF that I finally finished the NA-T build on. Eventually planning on running a standalone so I can tune it but goddamn I love these cars, so fun. I’m keeping it really safe, only running wastegate pressure on a TDO4 and keeping an eye on AFRs.
stinkeyes have and probably always will be my favorite. love how sleek it looks with few but defining body lines. I actually prefer the narrowbody as well, currently runnning a 08 2.5i for the daily. when the motor goes it's swap time! 4eat still doing great at 183k miles
It'll live if he doesn't have a heavy foot. My 20 makes 530whp on a FP turbo stock long block hasnt popped yet. My old 13 GR made 590whp on a 6466 stock long block for 2 yrs till it got rear ended and totaled. I wish I could build subaru's all day.
I got first start on my car last week! It sounds so healthy. Just have to wait for a new iag oil feed line to fix a bad oil leak and I can drive again!!
I always take the intake mani off before pulling the engine too. It usually has to come off anyway and it's a good time to replace the gaskets. I am guessing this engine starts lifting the heads and pushing coolant at around the 30psi mark. Good luck Alexi!
lol I was asking myself the same question tonight. I pulled my motor out of my 15 STI for the… 4th time. Engine reseal… I keep telling myself that maybe it’s time to look into something more practical, but then I thought about how it would just be better to get a fully built long block and redo everything myself… do I have Imposter syndrome with my Subie? Probably… but I love my car… and hate it… it’s complicated lol
Dude exactly. I love my car but hate it at the same time! Dreading to pull my motor out again to do a full reseal because it’s leaking oil in like 3 different spots. But I probably would never get rid of it. It’s complicated as well 🤣
Weird, I didn’t have this issue when installed my twin xclutch with the monoloc. Though, it’s been installed since 2020. Have about 30k miles on it now and still holding
I've built damn near every Subaru (4 cylinder) engine, I've only ever had luck with ACT and Exedy. X clutches always have issues and honestly I hate how they feel. The ACT HDSS is the BEST clutch for these cars that are around 350whp. PERFECT weight and they release so smoothly
I juat did an outdront V4 Racer, fully built heads, roatated G35-1050, AMS manifold, 3 fuel pumps, 2250cc Injectors, and surge tank. Shooting for 850-900 . In hopes to hit 1000 one day.🎉
Going to be picking up a 09-13 forester xt here soon as bad ass as it would be to have a rotated set up I know it’ll be useless to have one for only like 400 whp. But good job I love your videos man!
Right... Remember bader eating STI transmissions in the past? I mean at one point it's always a good idea to build the engine or transmission vs always replacing them.
@@MrGsxrmeI could count on one hand how many STI trans I’ve broke lol usually it’s always a 6466 car. Not bad when you consider the stock trans made 1400whp and didn’t break.
This turbo on a stock block at 18 psi will completely destroy a stock turbo set up. And way less head pressure since it will flow way more. Also e85 helps keep things a lot cooler.

I wanted a WRX, but my wife can't drive a stick, when she would need to borrow it. I settled on a Turbo Outback. Still a nice car to drive, but maybe once the warranty is up, I'll have some fun with it...
@inactivemogul403 I'm here in Massachusetts, so that's a little too far for me. LoL Edit: I just realized OTS meant off the shelf. Not a shop to tune it. It also seems for a 2023 Touring XT, your options may be limited. My daily driver is a nice 2014 RAM 1500 Laramie crew cab. I got the outback, because when I have to drive into Boston and Park as well as run certain errands, I need the smaller vehicle. It also makes a great family vehicle for the wife, kiddo and 3 dogs. She has a rogue, but we are looking to trade that in within the next year. Perhaps for the Forester. She just needs to be able to drive another vehicle if something happens to her car. Sorry for being long-winded.
I had a '13 sti that blew up the stock bock while I was e-tuning for adding an intake and downpipe. I hope this man has better luck than I did! I used your advice and took everything off the engine to remove but but when I put it back I installed it fully assembled. Im not sure which was way easier. I did wreck my O2 sensor though! So good shout on that one.
That O2 sensor has got me a few times 😂 re installing with everything attached works great when you don’t have to build a fuel system or anything like that 😅
Have you ever thought about building an EJ18 for boost? Like not wild 50psi but a mild 15-20psi? Would be sick to see one in an 1st gen legacy or impreza sportswagon.
Yo tanner whats your take on ONLY using subaru blue coolant for EJs? Im doing a seal refresh on my wrx and got some prestone blue for a steal and was planning on adding subaru coolant conditioner to possibly help with a coolant leak issue. Thanks for the informational vids broskii

Hey, love ur video's been watching then for a while now, I have that exact car, bone stock very well maintained. I am planning to take it to 350 or 400whp with the correct mods and tunning, I would just like to know your opinion on how unreliable it will be with the correct mods. I don't beat on my car, just constant highway miles.
So question for the best subaru guy out there! So my car was recently tuned for 500hp. Now it just feels like it skips on full throttle. Tuner said its a air leak. Im running a grimmspeed bpv and he had to tune it on speed density. It still does it imma check the spark plugs. Could it be the bpv or or some tyepe of boost leak or you think spark plugs will be it. Its on e85.
I’d start with pressure testing the air system. You can make one from some stuff from Home Depot and use. Small compressor to pressurize the system. Pressurize it to your max PSI level and spray any connections with soapy water. The bubbles will lead you
@fastdefender2150 You decide on the shop you want to be tuned by. Bigger turbo and front mount automatically rules out a OTS map. Send them a comprehensive list of all the parts that's will be installed after the build. They'll likely request payment for a base-map to get made for your car which you will need to flash onto your tuning device (Accessport more than likely). Before the first start is attempted, the base map will be flashed onto the cars ECU. Then you rock that map until the e-tune sessions or you make it to the shop for a Dyno-tune session.
In your opinion, if you know the risk that your motor is going to blow soon after modifying it, is it worth putting an aos on it? I know it's recommended to NOT re use it once a motor fails. I plan on going FBO with my stock block on my 21 STI without upgrading the turbo ( due to knowing the risk of the motor failing and in my opinion it's a waste of money since you have to replace it anyways.) Was going to either run a catch can or not run an aos at all. To my knowledge my motor does not consume any oil.
Tanner currently own a 03 WRX with the 5 speed mt was thinking about getting an iag short block with the hybrid piston option and refreshing with valve seals and getting the surfaces decked on my 2.0 heads with a vf39 turbo stock location turbo that I have a billet wheel upgrade for. Shooting for like 400 horsepower on E85 curious on your thoughts?
An 02 sensor code for running rich or cat below threshold. You can always use a 02 sensor spacer to trick the ecu into thinking the cat is still there.
The problem isnt "just" a built motor if this pops.. it's re-buying everything oil related along with it. should have just spent the money on a out front or IAG block
nice vid, also, on my 2020 wrx, the only thing done to it is an axle back exhaust and maybe a tune but idk because I got it from the dealership as "stock", even tho it pops like crazy, but my question is there is black soot literally everywhere on the back of my car after like 3 drives and my exhaust tips are covered. I know its running super rich, just dont know why and there is no CEL. And its not spark plugs because it seems to run fine. Thanks!
Tbh I’d look into getting a proper tune. Sounds like someone had a pops and bangs tune or running wayyyyy richer than it should be. The FA20 cars typically build up some black soot though

I do plan on building a motor myself or having one built later on then will add an aos when the time comes.
@@Unkyboiyou can clean an AOS if the engine does indeed fail. IMO go with a cheaper alternative like a catch can if your worried about it
is it a good idea no probably not. But is it a fun idea. yes yes it is ahah love the video description.
Lmao we’re here for a good time, not a long time 😂
Tanner currently own a 03 WRX with the 5 speed mt was thinking about getting an iag short block with the hybrid piston option and refreshing with valve seals and getting the surfaces decked on my 2.0 heads with a vf39 turbo stock location turbo that I have a billet wheel upgrade for. Shooting for like 400 horsepower on E85 curious on your thoughts?
Owner of that hatch got $ for labor work. Why not just do it right with built block. I guess
Dude wants to enjoy the stock motor for now 😅 I told him built motor would be the wayyyy
Tanner, I have a 2018 WRX. Grimm speed catted J pipe. What would happen if I gutted the cat out? Codes?
An 02 sensor code for running rich or cat below threshold. You can always use a 02 sensor spacer to trick the ecu into thinking the cat is still there.
P0420 code, if you can tune for it to be “catless” technically you’d be fine.
The problem isnt "just" a built motor if this pops.. it's re-buying everything oil related along with it. should have just spent the money on a out front or IAG block
Dude spends like 5k and picks up car in pajamas😂
Let the man be comfy 😂
Lmaoooo my bad bro
9:11 😂 yeah lol real slow 🤣🤣
Lmao thing wanted to pop off 😂
1.34 that battery corrosion 😅
Thing was baddddd 😂 he brought me a new battery 😂
@@Smeedia haha , it was pretty rough
Got an 08 sti hatch i needa do this to think ima thin the herd tho wayyy too many
Just send it and don’t look back 😂
Came to say Subarus don’t get timed up at top dead center
You right, *center dead center*
nice vid, also, on my 2020 wrx, the only thing done to it is an axle back exhaust and maybe a tune but idk because I got it from the dealership as "stock", even tho it pops like crazy, but my question is there is black soot literally everywhere on the back of my car after like 3 drives and my exhaust tips are covered. I know its running super rich, just dont know why and there is no CEL. And its not spark plugs because it seems to run fine. Thanks!
Sounds like a pop and bang tune.
Tbh I’d look into getting a proper tune. Sounds like someone had a pops and bangs tune or running wayyyyy richer than it should be. The FA20 cars typically build up some black soot though
@@Smeedia thanks!
any downsides to the current draw from two big walbro pumps?
We only have one running but no real drawback aside from a slight decrease in MPG
Can you clean his headlights while you’re doing it? They look very hazy.
They’re very hazy, but I ain’t getting laid to restore some headlights 😅
Weird question but if you’re going to take the time to pull out the engine for timing belt and a new clutch why not just a new motor 😂
My man paid for the whole engine, he gone use the whole engine 😂
@ lmao fair enough 😂😂😂
Wont last my subaru 2012 sti pipped the head gasket at 340 bhp on stock block... is a closed deck block best? When going for power?
where would the breather port on the hard line you cut for the coolant reservoir connect to?
