Excellent video as always sir. The best part of a day is when you put out these great videos of a hunt and you break it down in the comments of the good and bad. And trust me on that we all have had that one shot that you go back and forth on why this or that happens. 👍
Great stuff Thomas. Keep them coming as long as you can.....forestry companies have suspended all my stalking so hvae been rewatching all your videos as the closed thing I can get to being out myself. Thanks for that mate.

Yes, I misjudged the situation. As it is, I am not above error. Measuring, the front legs align at second 0,0 shot broke at second 0,15 and bullet impact is visible at second 0,45. I misinterpreted this as slowing down, still held sufficient for a lung shot, but the sum of errors was a ruined carcass. You don't feel to clever when you do something like that.
Everyone makes mistakes and it’s good that you show some of yours. Often shooting and hunting UA-cam channels only show the good side but you can teach other a lot more when you show how to recover from a mistake!
@@MrFREDANG i agree with you. Its very brave to post that content. British internet expert stalkers never make mistakes and get very upset when you show your human.
Sure, eventually. Basically don't wear a baselayer that rots on your body, you really don't need to add smell to the misery. Wool baselayer, thin windbreaker and my shell is the basic principle.

One of your best videos Thomas! Like the action cam perspective when you stalked on the side of the ridge. Gave me hand sweat actually as I have an issue with heights 😳 (never had hand sweat in my life but got it when I went to mast climbing training for Ericsson - great timing by the body to produce hand sweat when you need it the least 😂). Is that Spartan V2 bipod?
You'd never see me in one of those masts, I'd change my job! No, I have never used a Spartan or Tier One bipod, this is an RPS (Rifle Precision System) titanium. Bipods have a compromise somewhere, I like this one because it offers ample height (ref heather and sloping terrain in this film) for low weight (appr 400gr, very good for this size). That being said, I must be a little careful of not snagging the feet against my backpack or clothes, and the silencer need some tape to avoid "clank-clank" noise. I'm not sure what's on the market today, but at the time, it was the best compromise for my need.
Taking pictures of the bodies with identifying terrain features!!! laser distances & mag headings, so you can do reverse azimuths to your shooting location, has been my trick since laser rangefinders came out.
Works for GPS too, especially when skiing for capercaille and it falls inside the forest. But yeah, a basic understanding of maptools and clever use of laser works great. If in very difficult terrain, I plan and write down my route in to the game, from landmark to landmark.
Very good Video, that's real hunting. You worked hard for your prey. A thermal imaging camera would make it much more easier to find these pretty well hidden red deers. But if hight tech is going to "high" it might become boring. At the end, the King is watching you and it lookes like as if he will remember you the next time.... :-)
Thermal imaging is a fantastic tool, but I'm happy to leave that in the hands of professionals. I have used them, they do a fantastic job, but I have no economic interest or quota to fill so am happy to leave it. It depends on what the landowner wants me to do. This was purely recreational, so I went for scenery over numbers.

Hello Mr. Thomas Sir. I have a custom 700 SA from Rafdal with his barrel change system on it. I am considering a new barrel i 6mm but im not sure whitch cartridge to choose. Using it mainly for bird, fox and roedeer, but want to have some fun with long range (up to 600m) target shooting as well. Maximum barrel thickness will be 16mm. I'm thinking around 55cm long. Would you recommend 6xc in this setup, or maybe some of the smaller alternatives like 6mm BR? Hornady has a new one out now called 6 ARC which seems interesting. I kinda like the smaller ones for the light recoil since my rig is built for lightweight but 6xc seems way more available here in Norway. I know you have some experience with 6.5 Grendel. Could that be an alternative and how do you think it compares to the 6xc? Shait, this was really long wasn't it? Hope you find the time to answer. Fiz.
Well, what to say... I don't like V0 of >900 msec as it tends to make bullet selection critical and I have often experienced unnecessary carcass damage. Normally I use something with V0 830-870 msec and have been very satisfied with that. The 6,5 Grendel with its' V0 755 msec (?) was a nice experience as it dropped the roe just as hard as my faster 6,5's but with less everything. But I think bullet construction and diameter plays a role. I shot perhaps 50 deer with a 6mm-223 which shot a 6mm Sierra 85gr HPBT at around V0 830 (?) msec and I had A LOT of running deer (mostly lung shots), to the extent that I had to stop using it. With the faster 6 XC I shoot 105gr at around 850 msec and 90 gr at around 930 msec. That works just as well as my 6,5s, but I wouldn't want to shoot small birds with it. So I'd say it depends of what and how and where you choose to take your compromise. I really don't see the point of the 6 ARC when it's a Rem700 SA, you'll only create a logistical nightmare for yourself whilst 6mm Norma BR will do all the same and can be readily bought in Norway (for me it's a point that some factory ammo is also available, I don't have that much time for reloading anymore). All the previous potential feeding issues formerly associated with 6mmBR seems to have been solved now that the cartridge have been adopted by a fair amount of PRS shooters - meaning proper magazine solutions etc are available. It depends on what your bird/roe ratio is I suppose. With 6mmBR I'd be happy/happy to shoot both birds/deer and would use a 90gr Scenar for birds and 90gr Accubond for deer. If my main focus was deer, I'd go 6 XC with 105gr factory ammo for the occasional bird (it shoots fantastic) and Sierra 100gr Tipped Gameking for deer. These are all theoretical musings. IRL I'd take the money towards the next hunting trip. I just re-barreled my Rem700 SA, NOK 10300 which is halfway to a decent hunting trip. Add brass, dies, powders, bullets and it adds up to a whole hunting trip pretty fast, especially if you need new powders. Never would have done it if not for current travel restrictions. So... yeah but no. I don't recommend any 6mm, it's not going to change anything if you already have a rifle :D
@@THLR wow! Thanks alot 😊. You've given me alot to think about, which I love. The 700SA currently has a 338 Federal barrel in it so kinda want something different. Besides, I have a job, no kids and no girlfriend. What the hell else am I gonna spend my money on 🤣.
Stock hedgefunds? With a 338 on the top end of your spectrum I'd say the birds should decide. I know several competent swedish birdhunters (meaning they shoot a lot of birds/are specialized for that hunt ) and they seem to agree on 6mm 90gr Scenar or 6.5mm 123gr Scenar for reliably good results. Since you have a 6mm preference, whether you want to solve that with a slow load 6 XC or a hot load 6 BR should not make much difference if there are no feeding issues. You have a 338.
@@THLR Well I have to admit that the bird part of my equation is rather underwhelming. Living in ytre Helgeland, roedeer is my main fancy before and after the moosehunt. I hunt roedeer on foot, usually covering some distance so I like the lightweight setup. I realise my 338fed would be perfect as it weighs approx 3kg with scope and silencer but I'm struggling to get good accuracy with the bullets and loads I've tried so far. In fact it's so bad that I have given myself a 100 meter limit, even for moose, and a roedeer is a pretty small target compared. I have a couple of other rifles as well. One of them weighs a ton but shoots like lazer, the other is a wonderful and beautiful Ruger No1 that happened to be chambered in 338winmag. If you shoot more than 3 shots in a row with it, your collarbone dies... dead collarbone. These are my main reasons for wanting an extra barrel in 6mm. That, and the fact that most 6mm cartridges have a good reputation for long range shooting. I think I've boiled it down to 6xc or 6 norma BR. My 6mm rig will probably weigh less than 4kg and the rigs I see on UA-cam look like they could kill an elephant just by dropping it on its head. I'm just concerned that with the light setup I'm going for, the difference in recoil between the 6br and 6xc might be fairly noticeable? What's the weight of your blaser rig? Recoil doesn't seem to be an issue for you when it comes to observing impact?

Good on you for showing errors, we don't live in a perfect deer stalking world. As for the Blaser R8, I took it on my trips across the pond to Montana, it is just too heavy for true mountain hunting in my opinion, I weighed mine without a mod and it was approaching 12lb's so I sold it recently, I might get a K95, time and money will tell.
I agree. I love the idea and beauty of K95 and they shoot surprisingly well, but not sure I'd use it. I shoot a lot prone, and a falling block would possibly be better than a Jaeger kipplauf. I have started the process of slimming down, by changing scope & mount I dropped 400 grams. I am looking at a carbon fibre stock, but can't bring myself to spending that amount of money for so little weight. But stripped down, my Blaser is not far from my Rem700 which adds up to 3.8 kgs.
I would like to add the following. Get close make the first shot count keep shooting it until it quits moving. You do this and almost anything will work. This is how l was taught to do it. This is a great instructional hunting video🇨🇦🤠
There is a memoir book from an Alaskan hunter available on Kindle. Actually a great read and similar techniques is discussed in a good way. You might enjoy it, I'll see if I can find the title.
Yes, absolutely. Held on to my PMII's for 2 years before I decided to let them go in favour of the Minox. But it's big and heavy, like every scope in this class.
Good stuff as usual. A couple of questions: How much does your Blaser weigh with everything attached as in this video? The Ultimate stock felt great when I shouldered it, but I find the high cost compared to regular rifle (which is already pretty expensive) hard to justify. What made you spring for it?
The Atzl trigger and the primitive cheekrest solution on my Professional stock. Not sure about weight, will have to check. I have nerve injuries, so the standard trigger sometimes feel a bit "long". Worth the money? It's not magical, the improvement is primarily seen on paper and not the hunt.
Hi Thomas, like always very good hunting moments 👍👍👍Which bipod do you use? and isn't it too heavy for approaching hunting with the additional silencer? i am asking this because i just bought an r8 and am looking for a good bipod and silencer for the approach with a good compromise between weight and quality. What do you advise me Thomas? Thank you
No, as you wrote RPS titanium. It's about 450 grams (?). I'm not sure this bipod is available anymore, nobody seems to get a response from them. I'd stay below 500 grams and make sure whatever bipod you choose has a quickrelease so it's easy to take it on/off. The max height of the bipod should be a lot closer to 30 cm (to clear vegetation) than to 20 cm (which seems useful on a range only). I'm not oriented on what is currently available in the market, so cannot advise more detailed than this.
THLR.NO Var helt greit i fjor.

Ha Ha Thomas is obviously very physically fit. That’s the secret. Electronic gadgetry and big money does not replace HARD WORK! Just my opinion 😂🇨🇦🤠
I would like to add the following. Get close make the first shot count keep shooting it until it quits moving. You do this and almost anything will work. This is how l was taught to do it. This is a great instructional hunting video🇨🇦🤠
Well, that is relative. I can also be fond of the sofa, so right now...
There is a memoir book from an Alaskan hunter available on Kindle. Actually a great read and similar techniques is discussed in a good way. You might enjoy it, I'll see if I can find the title.
I find it blog 152 rps titanium 👍😉
No problem!
Hi Thomas, what is the model name of your Minox rifle scope?
Minox ZP5 5-25x56. I don't know anything about their other product lines.
@@THLR thank you for your fast answer! Are you lucky with that scope?
Yes, absolutely. Held on to my PMII's for 2 years before I decided to let them go in favour of the Minox. But it's big and heavy, like every scope in this class.
@@THLR OK, thank you!!! By the way, you are one of the greatest artist in this univers 😀!!!
Thanks, very genereous of you! Must be a small world...
Nice shot! Like!
Thanks!
Good stuff as usual.
A couple of questions:
How much does your Blaser weigh with everything attached as in this video?
@@THLR thanks for your answer Thomas, continue to give us happiness with your videos 👍😊
THLR.NO Var helt greit i fjor. .
Godt å høre!
Thomas suffers for our entertainment. How much of that is camera gear?
Take off roughly 6.0 kg for rifle, 2.0 for backpack, 0.8 clothing. The rest should be camera gear when bringing 1 tripod (I normally bring two).
I tilfelle hos Minox web.
Cos the angle x the distance = scoped dope ... easy
No need to do it that complicated. Unless you are sliding off the mountain, just allow for 0.3 mrad and you have your killing window.
@@THLR .. ok and if you have a scope which doesn't speak mrad ?
@@paoemantega8793 many scopes have an opening between illuminated point and reticle line, measure that. If not, just cut a 3cm post-it, aim bottom at 100m and make a mental image of how far up the line it is.
@@THLR Thank you :)
@letuspray I could say the same of your spelling? But I wouldn't, a bit of mutual respect tends to make for a better conversation.
👍🇳🇴
Takker!
