robert, please do more of these. i just lost my cat that i grew up with for 18 years, and i'm completely devastated. strangely, nothing's been more comforting to me than listening to pleasant idle conversation between smart people.
@ivorbigonee I just want to say I really appreciate your enthusiasm for Carpool, indeed I have plans for many more shows but at present I have about 10 minutes waking time a week in which to record them. I don't think I've ever been busier, so truthfully, I'm not being lazy, just unable to make any new shows at the mo. :-)
Brilliant stuff! Cory is absolutely inspirational. And I love the irony that everyone else (even authors) think that "Cory is just different, he can do DRM-free books" and allow themselves to be locked in. I'd love all the publishers and editors to listen to this.
I'm having a geek moment here. It's a great talk from Cory. I'm watching this on a Linux box because the DRM on my windows has decided that I stole the OS I bought. I'm seeing people driving around in a Leaf while my electric motorcycle recharges in the garage.
Is Cory Doctorow living in England these days? I've only read Makers (and a number of articles by or about him), but he's a fascinating guy. Great show!
BTW, I'd also like to say that I sent Cory 100 bucks for his free ebook (which I can highly recommend). I don't say this because I want props, but because I want to say that Cory is right. it's a business model that works. It establishes a direct connection to the author, builds brand loyalty. So I recommend him to others.
@Ur11 Europa is a moon of Jupiter. The triple point of water occurs at 0.01°C. Canines are part of the Caniformia suborder of the order Canivora. Mercury has a boiling point of 356.73°C. Ah, sorry, just stating some facts. Not that I'm in any way implicitly making any kind of point in doing so, of course. Nay, it's quite impossible for anyone stating a fact or two to also be making a point with those factual statements at the same time. Must we dance? Or can we just get to the point here?
Any chance of an interview with the excellent Si Fi author China Miéville? Hes an amazing writer great conversationalist and also a full on intellectual leftie :)
You know, Robert. I'd pay to download this show. I know I can watch it online, I know I can download it for free, but I'd seriously be happy to pay to download it. Maybe something extra for people who pay? For a dollar or two an episode you could be the next Louis CK. BoingBoing has a great article about him. I appreciate you give this away for free, but if you added a bit more for the paying public I'm certain there are people who would (not just me) :)
small publishers with "nothing to lose" as he says would be totally fine. big ones like him can take huge risks. he frames that as if it's an ironic and probably wrong statement, but the fact of the matter is that medium sized publishers like the one i'm with would die immediately. creative commons is great for a lot of things and i've published some things under CC, but it isn't a fit-all solution. i don't have a solution, but one certain thing is that i don't share his optimism.
Yay for getting Cory! Nay for the terrible new Kryten head mould. That nose, SO wrong! Hope it was more comfy though? And hopefully woo! for new Carpool soon-ish.
@Ur11 And I've never heard of you before either. There's several billion people on this planet that I've never heard of before, I'm sure. What's your point exactly?
This was amazing. Just went to a Next_Wave festival talk about new media and from the discussions with people there people are gathering their information from various sources already. There's a question of trust, with all this info swimming in your head what is solid and what is making real connections. .nextwave.org.au/news/breakfast-club-podcast-media

I've only just discovered these and I'm really enjoying them. Great stuff Robert!
Cory is a superb thinker, glad I've had the opportunity to see him give speeches live too, razor sharp with fielding questions.

A great talk Bob, thanks for arranging and uploading it.
I'm so happy that Carpool is back and with Cory Doctorow at that! A double delicious treat!
That was a highly entertaining episode. I never heard about this guy, but I absolutely enjoyed it. Thank you!
I missed you Rob! Welcome back.
And I'm so glad to have the old title format/song back :-)
Welcome back! Missed you..

Great to see you back!
Never heard of this chap before Bobby gave him a lift - but this is easily one of the best most fascinating Carpool's ever!
OMG. I was searching for my fav author and found my fav EV spruker interviewing him!!!!

down and out in the magic kingdom is the first book I read by Cory, and now I'm hooked on his books. this interview was very interesting to me :)
This is such an awesome show. It's such a weird premise, but very engaging.
We're back!
Lol I only know Cory from XKCD- great ep, as usual!

This guy seems to know everybody he needs, who will do stuff for him. That's quite an advantage.
I WANT MORE CARPOOL!
Any chance for an interview with Norman Lovett (AKA Holly from Red Dwarf) =D
What is the name of the song in the title? I've heard it many times but have never been able to find it.
@luckystrike1 there will be new episodes next year, some time, bobby be busy at the moment
Cory Doctorow was invented before my fifteenth birthday, and hence is the order of nature, and that is how it should be.
Any more series for Dave?...
i lv the song at the begining

+1 on Pilky for the Pool! You might have to explain the concept to him a couple of times at least...
Any chance of an interview with the excellent Si Fi author China Miéville? Hes an amazing writer great conversationalist and also a full on intellectual leftie :)
I thought you got rid of the Prius for an EV?
I just want you too know that I would never be the man i am today without the comedic influence of Red Dwarf and her crew, thank you.
@404jared404 Irony right?
your lucky that Cory descended from his balloon for you.
You should get Kevin Bridges on here! :D
@nalawahs He's stopped working for Dave now.
Aww shame. I miss carpool :
Any plans for the future or is it on semi permanent hiatus?

enough this guy said ziltch and you ken it ........
Am I the only one who hates the theme tune to this? It's so inane!
what
He wants money................
I did not particularly enjoy this particular episode of carpool due to Cory being so fucking boring in this.
