  • My response to the critics of Troy Brewer's assertion that the sign of Jonah Jesus referred to was a solar eclipse. Mike Winger and Chris Rosebrough dismiss the theory out of hand but there is scholarly research on this as I show in this video.

    I'm Rod Saunders, founder of Jew and Greek. I’m a musician, web developer, and a student of philosophy and economics. I recently published my first book on Amazon entitled Defending the Faith: Word of Faith Apologetics. It’s a response to the numerous charges against and misrepresentations of the Word of Faith movement and theology. I also have a CD of original music on CD Baby entitled Gates of Pearl. “Jew and Greek” is a good name because the two civilizations that influenced Western civilization the most were those of the Judeo-Christian and Greek worlds. From the Jews we received our values and a monotheistic theology, and from the Greeks we got philosophy which brought us science, sports, the arts, democracy, and economics. As a result I discuss all of the above in this blog and in my videos.

    My understanding is that when Jonah was barfed up on the beach after being in the belly of the whale was the sign not an eclipse of the sun. As Jonah was 3 days and 3 nights in the belly of the whale so will the son of man be 3 days and nights in the heart of the earth.

    • @JewandGreek
      @JewandGreek  3 місяці тому +9

      That's a common understanding of the sign of Jonah, and it might be right. But the Bible says that after the fish vomited Jonah up, God told him again to go to Nineveh. So he wasn't in Nineveh at the time, which means that the people of Nineveh didn't witness any miraculous sign from Jonah. When the Pharisees wanted a sign from heaven Jesus said that the only sign He would give them was the sign of Jonah, and the sky turned dark when Jesus was crucified. It's possible that there's a double meaning to what Jesus said. John the Baptist's ministry was a partial fulfilling of Malachi's prophecy about Elijah's return. "Out of Egypt have I called My Son" was a reference to Israel in the Exodus, but it was also quoted by Matthew regarding Jesus leaving Israel and returning to Nazareth as a child. I'm not dogmatic about this, but I do think the eclipse interpretation deserves a bit more than the scoffing dismissal we got from Troy Brewer's critics.

    Why doesn't Mike and others do any actual research and use logic? It is frustrating as Mike can be great but mostly just reaffirms his own beliefs and then teaches it as gospel truth.

    • @sandragambrel9721
      @sandragambrel9721 3 місяці тому +4

      Is he walking by the Spirit/spirit, or, his flesh, using a carnal mind, and man's carnal logic/reasoning, for his understanding? God warns us not to trust in man. We have the HS, and He leads us into all Truth. We don't need any man to teach us. 1 John 2:20&27. Believe it, and know all things, amen!!!!

    • @bytesizedbible
      @bytesizedbible 3 місяці тому +2

      @sandragambrel9721 Sure. The Holy Spirit will guide us into all Truth. But if that is all we need, then throw out the Bible. Paul wrote many books and he is a man.
      The Bible says we understand together with all the saints... it takes us all. As Paul said in 1 Corinthians that we should come with a teaching to church when led by the Holy Spirit. God uses us as people who are willing to be led by the Holy Spirit. I would say Mike is at times led but mostly just tries to reaffirm his own theology and his presuppositions and already established ideas get in the way. You can see this in spades with his women and ministry series. His logic is deeply flawed many times and his arguments are weak or non-sequiturs. Does this mean that he is only using his carnal mind? Maybe. But we know we have the mind of Christ as Paul says. Even by carnal logic, Mike fails many times. Look at this video by Rod. Just a little research shows that Mike is incorrect. Yet I won't accuse him of lying as I believe it is done out of laziness and ignorance but with a sincere heart.
      But I agree, if we want to know the deep things of Christ then we must access the heart of God by the Holy Spirit.

    I did have to agree with Rosebrough (I was in his chat section) on what Jesus said concerning the repentance that took place in Ninevah. It was the (anointed) preaching of Jonah. There was/is great power that can fall upon those who hear the anointed preaching. I'm surmising that the heathen would have felt the conviction and presence for the first time and 'knew' that they needed to do what the heard about the Jews and repentance (I don't know how they knew to put on sack cloth and cry out to God otherwise)
    I do believe that some have extraordinary anointings/power in their preaching. The bible says that they believed Jonah. It seems that they repented by what the heard. Matt 12:41 and Luke 11:32 both record that the Ninevites repented at the preaching of Jonah.
    I also thought/understood that Jonah was not happy that they repented and did (not) encourage/exhort them to do so. He prophesied their doom with the hope that it would come to pass. In Jonah 4:2 he accused God of being a gracious God, merciful, slow to anger, of great kindness, and repenting of the evil (doom)
    Rick Joyner spoke about extraordinary anointings that some would be given (like Jonah had).
    I tend to believe that people do not always need a sign to repent and follow Jesus. The conviction can work sufficiently.

    Good objective thoughts.. I thought Jesus was referring to the Pharisee who could see signs and wonders in front of their eyes, and just got more hatred. It seems faith doesn’t come from the sign but from hearing the word, ie heart faith. although the sign is just that, a sign to confirm. It seems even if someone would stand before God and all his angels , he could still hate God. The sign itself can never change us, I think this is the wickedness Jesus means. They seek a sign and can read the weather and moon and sun, but can’t see the moral thermometer of the age .

      Look up what the sin of Ninevah was. They repented but then went back again at some point and was destroyed. Why do we bicker about why someone repents? How many witnesses speaking out against sin does a person/nation need? Maybe God does use signs with meaning for a wicked generation? Point is where is the repentance and who went to these areas and open air preached the gospel!?! If the Church was really concerned there would have been preaching and possible revival in those places. Yet there's more judgement against "Ninevah/America" without the "Jonah/Prophets"! Maybe there's more "prophets" out there that want to see the "signs" of judgment than that of repentance unto salvation! Most know the rapture is a signless event! But judgement in the Bible always had warnings whether through prophet and/or signs.

We must be careful in judgements. Imo this eclipse was hyped from contrasted sides. There's always been a bombardment of doom. Is it effective for its purpose? I think so most of the time. We are already being worn out by it.

    In my understanding the sign of Jonah has nothing to do with his preaching in Nineveh. It is exactly what Jesus said it was: As Jonah was in the belly of the whale, dead for three days and ressurected, so Jesus would be dead for three days in the heart of the earth and ressurected from the dead. And yes Jonah was dead in the fish/whale, the scripture says that when he was in its belly he prayed from three places: the belly of the fish, the heart of the earth and sheoul. Cant agree with it being anything else. Love and Blessings
