  • In this webinar presented by the Arizona Center for Rural Health, participants delved into the critical factors that shape substance use and opioid use disorders. The session focused on understanding the impact of genetics, mental health, and socio-cultural influences on individualized treatment approaches. Attendees learned to craft tailored treatment plans using strategies such as Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) and behavioral therapies.
    Dr. Natasha Mendoza, Associate Professor at Arizona State University’s School of Social Work, led the insightful session. With a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University and postdoctoral training at SUNY Buffalo’s Clinical and Research Institute on Addictions, Dr. Mendoza brought a wealth of expertise in substance use and co-occurring disorders. Her research integrated harm reduction philosophy and community-based insights, emphasizing wellness and identity in behavioral health.
    Participants gained valuable knowledge on integrating current research and emerging trends into clinical practice to enhance patient outcomes. Whether they were healthcare professionals or students, the webinar equipped them to navigate complexities in substance use treatment with competence and empathy.
