ok so these people (yes, there’s a whole team behind this game) definitely used machine translation, which hurts me as someone who studied translation!! the notes, however, don’t make much sense in russian either. it’s not the grammar, it’s the way the surgeon writes his notes like they’re..poetry?? guy is talking about the most random things in the most extravagant way possible for no reason 👹 the note at 18:29 should read:
“I like to observe the little things. Often on my way to work, I get fixated on pigeons or on a flying butterfly. So easy, gentle, serene. I love when everything happens gradually. I don’t even like counting numbers out of order, which is why I hated maths… Everything has to be in order. It even scares me at times, but that’s not the point. I performed 3 surgeries today and they all went well. Although, for some reason, it was the first time I came face-to-face with fear. I don’t know why, but it was unusual.”

As a translator, can agree. Machine translations are not the devil (I work with them constantly on CAT tools), but they are a tool, not a good final product. • @Amethystar

My take on the story just from reading the notes: The person (possibly "Jackson") writing the notes was a surgeon who came to see his job as more of a curse than a blessing. He felt he was depriving people of the blessing of death. He began to write his autobiography, including when he met the Drozery brothers who hired him to help with "the perfect birth," (possibly an easy birth) and he was looking forward to it because he wouldn't have to get too emotionally involved. He mentions that they scared him, but that excited him. His wife and daughter, Lola, eventually left him due to him not being around because of his job. Some time after this he felt the Drozery brothers no longer thought of him as a friend; he lamented that they were not kindred spirits, but that they used him for their own ends. Then they likely killed him.
Then there are letters or diary entries between Frank and Tedd (who I think are the Drozery brother), who are working with Anna, who is trying to resurrect Jackson using his book as an anchor for his soul. Anna has been "torturing" (brainwashing) them, likely convincing Tedd to kill Frank. She then manages to "resurrect" Jackson from his writings, but as a ghost he is more violent and strong. He was so enamored with death, he probably hated the idea of being brought back to the world of the living. It's hard to tell how it ends, but it seems like Jackson is bound to the basement and Anna is trying to think of how to use him for her own ends, part of that including bringing people to the house, including someone named Alexander. I think the thing in the basement at the end might be Jackson.
(Note: I studied Russian but am very out of practice, but I tried to look at some of the original text and that didn't help much. Russian storytelling can be a bit bizarre.)

i dont know about anyone else but i think i understand the story. so, the father i guess Alexander, is a doctor and someone along the way he died. Anna was his wife and lola was his daughter. Anna met two brothers, ted and frank. they began to hang out, as time went on, Anna began to miss her husband and found some kind of way to bring him back. However in doing so, she used the brothers as a means of finding things. probably the items she needed to resurrect her husband. she also tortured them? within the writings that the husband left, there was also a piece of his soul. so instead of bringing him back from the other side, she needed to contain his spirit within a new body. i guess that's where our main character comes in. Honestly i read a lot of manga that sometimes comes with crappy translations so, yeah

    • @kintoshmalae1
      @kintoshmalae1 11 місяців тому +12

The mother and father were also fighting because of the picture the daughter gave her - given the note earlier, I'd suspect that it might have been daddy with a pregnant woman (the one he was helping with the birth) in his workshop and the mother might have misinterpreted as something else. Given the ending, it seems like it's our reading the notes along the path that bind his spirit into our body - I'd wonder if there was an alternate ending if you look at the book at the end instead of the note...

    • @Amethystar
      @Amethystar 11 місяців тому +6

I got the impression that the surgeon "Jackson"" was the one being resurrected, and Anna was using his autobiography and medical instruments to bring him back. It felt like his wife and daughter left because he was never around, either due to work, spending time with the Drozery brothers and Anna, or other things. It felt like Anna was the 25 year-old woman, who was brainwashing Frank and Todd who possibly killed him, hence Anna wanting to resurrect him. I could be wrong, though, as Russian stories can be very esoteric and this one leaves a lot to the imagination. Alexander may be her newest mark to manipulate, and possibly lead him to the basement for something involving Jackson.

    My take on the story:
Anna could be the doughter of the doctor jackson who was so successful or work obsessed that he didn't have time for his family. Also dealing with experiments with some brothers. After the divorce he became mentally ill making strange letters about death and unlucky numbers. (Maybe eventually killing himself with drugs or something)
Then in chapter three anna is trying to revive someone. Or continuing her fathers research. A loved one or the doctor? Enlisting similar named brothers to help out. Alexander the main character is chosen as sacrifice to host his soul.
The game plays as jackson in the body of Alexander. Te visions are his memories.
IFU is maybe best figured out in Russian. Wouldn't be able to tell what though.
I am wondering if you would get a different ending if you pick up the book instead of the paper.

35:25 "Разраб одинокий чушпан-девственник" according to Google Translate means "Developed by a lonely virgin chushpan." I had to look up what a chushpan (чушпан) was because I was starting to believe I was seeing the letters wrong. It means, basically, a wimp. So, I guess it's saying, "Developed by a lonely virgin wimp."

So I got curious and Googled "IFU".
It appears to mean "Instructions for Use", which according to the FDA is a "form of prescription drug labeling created for drug products".
Don't know how that relates to anything in this game other then the doctor character?

Hey Gab! Fellow Nick Cutter fan here 😊 if you haven't already, I highly recommend checking out his novel The Troop. If you think The Deep was gruesome... man. A must-read if you like Stephen King or Adam Neville ("Last Days", "The Ritual")

The translation of the words above the toilet at 28:25:
    Russian: тут he срать
    English: here he shit
I had to actually add a Russian keyboard to my phone to type those letters out because Google Lens was only picking up the 2nd and 3rd line and I couldn't decipher the first line. But I figured it out in the end.
I know this is useless, meaningless and a waste of time, but I did it (and do it with other UA-camrs when they can't translate it, so I'll translate it and leave a comment) in case anyone was curious.
(Also, I absolutely fucking adore and love your desktop wallpaper of you and Beebs! It's the cutest!)
Edit: The fucking translations for the notes are so fucking stupid. I truly wish that an actual person did the translation, rather than using Google Translate because the notes and the story make absolutely no fucking sense and it seems like the story could have had potential... But Google Translate ruins yet another game... Also, this game is basically a walking simulator with notes and keys. I wish there was something more to this game because it's a bare bones game. Also, I wish you'd leave the original note up for even a second or two so I could check with Google Translate and see if they truly did use it for each note.

"Тут не срать" = "don't shit here"
There's no "he" because it's Russian letters
And as it already mentioned a million times before the notes don't make any sense even in Russian. It's just bad storytelling or maybe AI generated script

I think getting the number puzzle is supposed to be a try and fail over and over (brute force) attempt. There are technically 7 digits, but they are grouped so you have 4 slots and 4 digits. It should be quick to solve.

  • @josiem.7995

The number puzzle for the keypad is in that order because of the note where he says numbers have to be in order (smallest to largest), so I guess they just want you to know that means but any numbers in that way. But, it's kind of harder to think that way when they all get jumbled into one big number on the keypad anyway 🤣

The order on the number puzzle wasn't as odd as you seemed to think by your comment at the end. I get if you weren't paying attention to most of the notes though, as they made very little sense, *but*...You found the numbers 12, 13, 3, and 25, and there was a note in the same room (or at least nearby) that said that he hated math because the numbers were "all random" or something like that, and that he wanted everything to be *in order*.
Put the numbers in order and you get 3, 12, 13, 25, or 3121325, which was the answer.
As for what the story was about. At first I figured bad translation and maybe they were on something when they wrote it or wrote about a weird dream or trip. But reading the comments from russian speaking people, it seems the dev is just a kid, which would make the game quite impressive.

There was a small notepad and pencil on the table with the numbers puzzle. I thought you were meant to rub the pencil to reveal the correct order on the pad. Because on of the notes said the answer was "on the surface". But not sure if it was even able to be interacted with.
