20 years later still gives me chills from the video
Man this is one from back in the day I miss. “My Immortal” is such an awesome sad ballad that brings back memories too.
A certain, infamous fanfiction ruined the term "my immortal" for me long ago 💀😂 regardless, great suggestion!
Check out her song, "My Heart Is Broken." When she sings it, you believe it.
Especially the version from the synthesis album. It’s probably closer to what she had in mind. If I recall the producer of the Evanescence self-titled album pushed for this to be much heavier instead of letting it be the ballad it should have been. She corrects that in her followup synthesis album
Her lyrics just touch your soul don't they.
Also THE CHANGE. Oh my God
Fun fact, Amee Lee was a pianist for many years before being recognized as a singer. She plays all of the piano on her own records.
The band version of My Immortal makes me cry & shiver. I relate to it in many ways. I’d love for you to react to it. Her voice is amazing. Note. I saw them in a club in St. Louis before they hit & somehow knew they were going places.
Pretty much every ballad by Epica makes me cry 😂😂
so good
A fascinating thing about music is how it can take on a personally interpreted meaning that may be worlds apart between the listener to the artist. I can personally relate to crying out to God to bring me to life; that's an expression of my experience. ❤️😊
Would love to hear more Evanescence reactions. All of their albums incorporate her piano playing with strings, sometimes choir too. There’s a ballad in each album. They have an orchestral album “Synthesis” which is a reworking of many of their hits and new songs, the orchestral arrangements by David Campbell. There’s a live DVD version of their concert where she performed live with a local orchestra in each town she played in when she went on tour. Also check out their latest album 2021 The Bitter Truth!
When they recorded this the record company made them add in the parts with the male singer, Amy didn’t want that. They’ve released versions without it, and those parts aren’t performed live anymore.
Was listening to this as a kid🥰 my parents had a 3 album edition: Time, Discovery, Out of the Blue😁 amazing music, love it till this day🥳
In the chorus right after the bridge when everything drops out but vocals and drums. *chef's kiss*.
I still think this song fits amazingly well with The Neverending Story. The line "call my name and save me from the nothing I've become" is basically exactly what happens.
Amy Lee is a classically trained musician with a jaw dropping voice and greatly skilled in playing piano. You definitely should react to more of her and Evanescence songs. React to Speak to Me by Amy Lee, Far From Heaven live on Stephen Colbert Show, End of The Dream (Synthesis version), Lithium and My Immortal next.
The sad thing about this song is that they made Amy get a male voice because back then she was told "people won't accept a rock band with a female lead". Something that always gives me goosebumps in this video is the girl with the happy clown mask, taking it off only to show she was crying. Such a powerful meaning in a 2 second clip. I still remember when I first saw the video of this song in summer of 2003, ever since it's been my favorite band and I love her like a goddess, she's an amazing powerful woman with great morals and incredible musical talent and voice. It's also so sweet that all the way back then, Josh could see her pain, and now they've been happily married and raising their child, talk about fairytale end. After all the crap she endured in her life, and still does, I'm glad she has a loving husband and a little boy who is the light her life. Please look into more songs! Lost in paradise, Imaginary, Imperfection are just few of my absolute favorite ones.
Still think this song wouldn’t be the same without Paul McCoy. I like the other songs on this album and think they work without a male voice just fine. However, when you see Bring Me To Life live it doesn’t sound as good as it does with the male contrast in the song.
If you like Amy Lee, you GOTTA hear Pat Benetar, Hell is for Children. It's dark, but holy moley, does she have a voice.
This song is so powerful, its beyond believing
'I will follow you into the dark' on a HELLO KITTY keyboard, it doesn't get much better than this, Amy is pure talent!
The Evangelical Christian thing likely came from the fact that the guest/male vocalist is from a band named “12 Stones”(who are great btw), that are a “Christian” band. They actually are worth checking out. Just because someone is a Christian doesn’t mean they’re preaching at you at every corner.
Also the original drummer is a member of Living Sacrifice a Christian Heavy Metal band and Their original keyboardist and songwriter David Hodges is also a known Christian Artist.
@@blackflowers5996 no kidding? Living Sacrifice was one of my favourite bands as a teenager.
Since you mentioned hiding behind a mask, you might enjoy this powerful song by "The Raven Age", founded by the son of Maiden's Steve Harris.
Lyrics:
Lost
I'm running in circles again
But it seems all these doors are open
Like mirrors reflecting, the truth begins
Nothing, nowhere
Blackness, despair
Wait
I see something moving ahead
I must not let myself get drawn in
There's a man in a mask reaching out to lend his hand
Will I ever find a way out of this place?
Everywhere I seem to turn all looks the same
But still I walk this lonely road, when will it end?
I can see my fall from grace
These aching moments
Just to obliterate my skin
Where do I go now?
How can I find my way home?
In desperation I am hiding the truth
Only to be found out in the end
Now
I see through their blood thirsty gaze
And I've realized that I am the prey
Disguising intentions to then betray
Now I know
All these treacherous secrets you keep
And my anguish is lifted from me
Sincerity failed, only left deceit
Will I ever find a way out of this place?
Everywhere I seem to turn all looks the same
But still I walk this lonely road, when will it end?
I can see my fall from grace
These aching moments
Just to obliterate my skin
Where do I go now?
How can I find my way home?
In desperation I am hiding the truth
Only to be found out in the end
As I drown my dignity
I try to understand this life
Find a place where I belong
The truth burns up inside
And the flames provide the light to find
That I never belonged here at all
As I drown my dignity
I try to understand this life
Where do I belong?
The truth burns up inside
And the flames provide the light to find
That I never belonged here at all
These aching moments
Just to obliterate my skin
Where do I go now?
How can I find my way home?
In desperation I am hiding the truth
Only to be found out in the end

I'm ALL HERE for evanescence. please continue to react to evanescence they're amazing!
I think her voice on " Hello" is mesmerising. Very much worth your attention Doug.
Doug, I highly recommend you to listen other songs from Evanescence, such as 'Like You', 'Your Star', 'The Only One'. Those song have more classical elements in them
"The Only One Live sessions 2020", is MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!
Nice reaction!!!
I think you have to take a look at her performing with a full orchestra:
- Evanescence The End of the dream Synthesis live DVD version.
- Evanescence Lacrymosa Synthesis live DVD version.
🔥 🔥 🔥
Evanescence's debut album is their best, no doubt. Everybody's Fool and Tourniquet is still kicking strong and My Immortal (band version) still makes me cry. That Fallen album is filled with very good songs. And also Seether feat Amy Lee - Broken is superb for 3 chord song 😀
Hey Doug, a song you should listen to is Live - Lightning Crashes.... would love to hear your take on that one....great song!
20 years ago holy shit!
Love this song, Amy has such a great sound.
That half time part is so good
The whole album became the soundtrack to one of the darkest periods of my life; the tipping point when you wake up and realise one's life is becoming The Somme, and it's not going to get better.
NO MORE TEARS-OZZY OSBOURNE
Hey Doug. Love your reaction and i love amy's voice. Can you make a reaction to My Immortal. Such a beautiful ballad by them.
One of my favourite bands. You really must do a reaction to Amy Lee Speak to Me, would make a great Woman's Wednesday. It's the most beautiful song and shows a whole different side of her vocals.
I've seen evanescence live in new Zealand and my favourite track would be my immortal the band version
Thanks!
A reaction and analysis of one of the two new singles from MUSE or any song from the new GHOST album would be wonderful, I think you would enjoy those bands ❤️
I urge you to listen to her performance of this song with Waggaki Band, a Japanese group which combines traditional Japanese instruments and rock instruments. Also, Waggaki Band itself is worth a listen- an 8-piece group, all incredibly talented, combining a shamisen, koto, taiko drums, a wood flute, and standard electric bass and regular guitar, rock drums, along with an incredible female singer.
Good Enough is a great song, really like the video. Broken w/ Seether is another one to check out.
Absolute classic
An awesome woman and artist.🖤❤️🤘
Check out Within Temptation, Ice Queen.
There could be a case made for some awesome crossover here, with a "Women of Metal" day paying tribute to the Arch Enemies and In This Moments out there.
Need to discover Within Temptation too... Dutch band.
Beautiful!!
I would like to recommend Steve Vai's Whispering a prayer
Nice to see you exploring newer bands in the rock and metal scene. You should check out Breaking Benjamin! They’re one of my favorite bands ever. I recommend their song Blow Me Away, which they wrote for the game Halo 2. Very powerful and catchy song
This is one of the very few rock singles to top the UK charts in this century so deserves respect for that achievement. My opinion - it's not bad but it's not great.
I think you could enjoy the band 'The Human Abstract' a lot. As far as I'm concerned, their lead guitarist who wrote the majority of their songs on the albums 'Nocturne' and 'Digital Veil' actually studied classical piano at university and you can clearly hear this in their music. It's just something different. Song I'd recommend are Faust, Antebellum or Harbringer.
any reactions planned to the latest rammstein tracks from their new album? can recommend all of them, would highly recommend angst first. :)
keep up the good work
Her voice is absolutely glorious, not sure what happened to her, feel like I haven't heard any new music in years. Also, interesting about the evangelicals, I have never heard that in all the years since this released
We are talking "Women Wendsday", we are missing Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation and Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil on the channel
This song and Going Under became very important to me as I was in a bad relationship and going through a mental breakdown, coming out of the breakdown meant I was coming back to life, and in Going Under the last line is I'm NOT going under. the following year I saw Evanescence play live (I took the friends who helped me through all the struggle) I don't often listen to any of the album now as it is bitter sweet for me
So many others have done a reaction but I'd love to see your reaction to My Immortal by Evanescence..
Great reaction! Have you done any reactions to Pat Benatar, especially her earlier stuff like "Promises In The Dark" or "Fire and Ice"? It's unfortunate she never hooked up with Ronnie James Dio to have kids because Pat and Ronnie are these little people with walls of sound for voices! Carly Simon and James Taylor have a son who hit the vocal lottery!
Other woman and songs to react to Doug - Halestorm - I Miss the Misery (Lzzy Hale), Guano Apes - Open Your Eyes (Sandra Nasic), Blondie - Heart of Glass (Deborah Harry), Carpenters - Close to You (Karen Carpenter), Fleetwood Mac - Landslide (Stevie Nicks)
Evanescence - Better without you, PLEASE DO It
I highly suggest listen Mission Jupiter.... Sea of hope or anything from them and hear her voice and put them on Wednesday women...
Owen S
Hey, Doug! Maybe next week you could do a Moody Monday and listen to Nights In White Satin by The Moody Blues. (Full orchestral version) Thanks love the vids
I'd love to see him do all of Days Of Future Passed on a few Long Song Fridays
I absolutely find the song Whisper from that same album mesmerizing. They combine strings and choir in a powerful song that I think a classical composer would find fascinating! Please check it out if you haven’t. The live version may be the best.
Composer with a great ear for harmonies and chord progressions.
Viewers give him Evanescence.
Lol.
@Matej Juhás very random.
Helvering has wrestled with Steven Wilson, Åkerfeldt and Zappa.
Simp all you want for Amy Lee, but her band is boring, simple and low-effort.
@@Kaufmanesque You got it slightly wrong, it goes: _Composer with a great eager for views and subscribers_
Hence it's the other way around: _Evanescence gives him views and subscribers_ ;)
You should listen to the goody voice version of this
From what I know "bring me to life" is mainly about romance and romantic relationships - the Bring me to life refers to bring me to life so the 2 can start a romance - at least that's what I heard - I could be wrong about the lyrics
if you like this, then you should check out lacuna coil. they get compared to evanescence a lot, even though they were around first. theyre like the better, lesser known version of evanescence. check out the song swamped, its one of their most famous ones.
another [all female] band that you should check out is drain sth. hard rock band from the late 90's that sadly broke up after two cds. they were great, though. check out crack the liars smile.
If you enjoyed Evanescence, please listen Lacuna Coil, an italian band that sounds similar
3:50
Another fact about the song, Amy point blank refused to have a rapper on the track. But the label insisted on it otherwise the track wouldn’t be released. They agreed to having a rapper in the band and this is the only song that is rapped on.
Or something along those lines….
And good thing they did because it definitely adds to the song. Live sounds like something is missing when they don't do male vocal parts.
I don't think you really payed attention to the arrangement. Vocal harmonies are outstanding there. Similar band that had some too at that time was "30 seconds to Mars".
If you would like to react to an artist you might not have heard of, I recommend the artist Aesthetic Perfection with the song Lonesome Ghosts
More Ev and Amy Lee,synthesis live album.
I remember when this came out as their commercial breakthrough. I though it was some kind of linkin park (pop metal, two vocalists) with female lead. But AFAIR the guy never sang again in all the forthcoming (and equally successful) singles. Really strange.
I've always loved this song and I never knew about the inspiration for the song but what is powerful to me is a lot of my feelings of listening to the song I got most of what she was saying in the song conveyed much of what she said about her inspiration for the song I thought about it. I don't know who can listen to that song and think it is a christian song at all? I suppose when you have those filters you see what you want to see. Interesting and Awesome song!
If you want to hear REAL magical women voice, this one absolutely must: Within Temptation - Somewhere
Greetings from Germany
Gone be a little hard to listen to my wife loved it she she passed away on 11th December and I only wish that I could 💔 will always love you jackie 💔
Sorry to hear that, man. Even when the ones we love leave us too soon, the memories of good times spent with them will stay for the rest of life. Stay strong! 👋
I heard Amy Lee say in an interview that she is a "devout Christian " sooo...
try the song, lithium also
I could never be a lead singer in today's world. For one, I am afraid of heights. For two, I am afraid of walking on thin ledges. And for three I am afraid of hanging from high windows over city streets, or anywhere else for that matter. Now wonder she gets the big bucks. And mind you, she can't possibly be looking at the lyrics while singing this, unless they were painted in reverse on her corneas. And does she sound winded? Not at all! And she's not even David Byrne or Peter Gabriel, our most athletic auteurs. Bill Evans anticipated these future beings.
Women you say??? Go for "Burning witches", a band from Switzerland. I would recommend "Hexenhammer", tremendous song.
thank you ;iked women
Pleaaaase, do "Marianne" from Tori Amos!!!
Might I suggest "Lacrymosa" from Evanescence's album Synthesis. I think Mozart would've really enjoyed it. ua-cam.com/video/KcLP8v3823I/v-deo.html
The Warning
Listen to Violet Orlandi's version of My Immortal.. she does an amazing job ua-cam.com/video/rqmfnRDfFTw/v-deo.html
Going underrrrrrrrrrrrrrr evenescence
Next visit to Evanescence, please, PLEASE, react to "Lithium": ua-cam.com/video/PJGpsL_XYQI/v-deo.html
Great song. Singers today way over utilize vibrato. It is important to have a good vibrato ( I don't lol ) but that doesn't mean it has to be used at the end of every phrase.
Amy Lee hated the fact that there was a male rapping of this. She later re-recorded the song her way.
Fun (ish) fact (until you realize it's totally sexist):
Any Lee originally wrote this as a power ballad. Utilizing more strings than guitar. Because this was a debut album, she allowed the label to essentially bully her into putting this male vocalist and band on the song, with all the distorted guitars and powerful drums that came with them. Because it "wasn't rock enough".
Later, she said that she's grateful for the break that the song gave her (pretty sure it hit moderately high on the Billboard top 100), but she went on to record another version of this song in her original vision on a later album.
Once you listen to the new version, and other songa by her, such as My Immortal, you really hear the disparity between what's obviously her style, and what the label forced upon the song, and it almost sounds disjointed.
React to breaking Benjamin - I will not bow
Wasn’t the music for this song a classical piece?
Using Patreon screwed everything up.
It was doomed to be screwed up from the go, patreon just made it clear...
I have always hated this song, not only because it has been played to death. I wonder if there are any tracks Doug dislikes or can’t stand. To be fair: on your first listen you should not be too judgmental but I guess many songs he reacts to he must have heard before.
Man this falling off
Wife & Kids loved this. Sounds like a Woman trying to salvage LnkPrk
Evangelical Christians finding meaning that isn't there? Colour me shocked.
Too mainstream, too cliché song structure. Nothing special about it. In short, the song sucks hard.
Evanescence = cheap and boring copycat of Nightwish/Lacuna Coil/Within Temptation
