I'm a total YES fan, but when my friend said listen to Nightwish, I said ok. Now I have listened to this song over a hundred times and can't stop listening. This song, I haven't looked up many of the other ones yet, but they are great! It's glued to my body and soul, and yes, YES will always be there, but there is always a new experience. :)
Gheghe, I was just thinking the same. And floor isn't a star because she is Dutch and we Dutch people don't do fame. Plus, i like it that Nightwish isn't a band I hear on the radio. Keeps it a little bit mystic.
Hello Doug Helvering ! Nightwish fans here, your reaction just appeared on our radar.. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Wacken Open Air festival 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a 82k+ audience. Also a recent sad news - these days Marco Hietala, the bass player and male singer of the band, announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. As I saw you enjoyed this powerful performance of the band, together with the stellar vocals and charisma of our Dutch metal queen, Floor Jansen. Thanks for the composition analysis. It helps us fans better understand WHY we follow them. Hoping for more thorough future analysis, you have my subscription. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps. I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol " Hoping you'll continue this journey with us, I'll drop here a list of songs with the current lineup of the band you may like (please consider this list of links only as "a tip of the iceberg", an indication that they have a vast and very diverse repertoire, and not as something mandatory): "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) ua-cam.com/video/zz_7OCCQlXs/v-deo.html "Storytime" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) ua-cam.com/video/pvkYwOJZONU/v-deo.html "Ever Dream" live at Wacken 2013 (uplifting vocals) ua-cam.com/video/1Xi4n8dJcF8/v-deo.html "Song Of Myself" live at Wacken 2013 (dark/metal) ua-cam.com/video/lQu5QjidHWg/v-deo.html "Dead Boy's Poem" - live Buenos Aires 2018 (soulful ballad) ua-cam.com/video/S8E3L7ggLMM/v-deo.html "Ghost River" live at Wacken 2013 (metal) ua-cam.com/video/05eitd-EA6I/v-deo.html "Dark Chest Of Wonders" live at Wacken 2013 (metal, the greatest show opener ever) ua-cam.com/video/OvOD6xecph4/v-deo.html "My Walden" live at Wembley 2015 (celtic / folk) ua-cam.com/video/knqeI807ZlY/v-deo.html "Sleeping Sun" live at Tampere 2015 (ballad) ua-cam.com/video/rsotlzr9wNw/v-deo.html "The Islander" live at Tampere 2015 (Marco in charge..) ua-cam.com/video/Zo8ncK_5kzc/v-deo.html "Stargazer" live at Tampere 2015 (operatic vocals / metal) ua-cam.com/video/NhEuAPYm_Ug/v-deo.html "Sahara" live at Tampa 2016 (middle eastern vibe) ua-cam.com/video/lTvYfLa4Wlk/v-deo.html "Slaying The Dreamer" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) ua-cam.com/video/wA44tjaP5n0/v-deo.html "I Want My Tears Back" live at Buenos Aires 2018 (celtic / folk vibe) ua-cam.com/video/TBOdgxjb0kM/v-deo.html "Devil & The Deep Dark Ocean" live In Buenos Aires 2018 (metal) ua-cam.com/video/t26r_vAYQ0Q/v-deo.html "Weak Fantasy" live at Tampere 2015 (dark metal) ua-cam.com/video/AN239Pbqbjo/v-deo.html "7 Days To The Wolves" live at Wembley 2015 (dark metal) ua-cam.com/video/XvsfwAPbWXc/v-deo.html And if you want to hear Floor growling :) then try "Yours Is An Empty Hope" live at Mexico City in 2015 ua-cam.com/video/DuwY1d-KIss/v-deo.html Last but not the least - they just released their 9th studio album on April 10th 2020 named "Human :||: Nature" - just take a peek to their official playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLihZ3gi5Yvzc0pfH2cbNKUUX8o3pb8eVg.html (for example: "Shoemaker", the 3rd track from this album, tells the story of Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science, whose ash was sent on the Moon after his death, as a tribute from the scientific community ..) The links presented above are with the current singer of the band, Floor Jansen, since I'm a fan of the recent era of the band, with Floor as the singer. I encourage you to add the best recommendations in the comments. ** That being said, I will add here the message left the other days by an old fan of the band, @Fabrizio Gorla: " To be fair to the old fanbase, you may want to include also some of these songs. For sure, he definitely deserves more attention. I'm a big fan of Jeremy Soule and Hans Zimmer but I sincerely believe Tuomas could top those guys combined. He's an absolute genius when it comes to composing orchestral masterpieces.
@@melbman43 Yea despite how hard Anette tried, her voice just wasn't a good fit for Nightwish's sound. Tuomas tried to write around it and succeeded to an extend, but in the end it just didn't work out. Floor combines the best of what both Tarja and Anette had to offer, imo. On top of also bring able to growl. (not the best growl, but still pretty good.)
I'm 74. Listened primarily to classical my whole life. Started composing this past April. Discovered symphonic metal about three years ago, thanks to Nightwish. Best band on the planet (Vienna phil not relevant here ;).
I'm 65. My son was an audio engineer and a metal head. He ended his life in September on his birthday. I saw an online reference of his regarding Nightwish. I can't stop listening to Nightwish. The pain won't ever go away...... I miss him so.
65 here, well into all the bands in my teens, saw loads in the 70's. Music went downhill until the 90's, then it started again. I chanced on Nightwish about a year ago, and Within Temptation - Ice Queen yesterday ua-cam.com/video/tcH4EsxREto/v-deo.html . I ordered Mother Earth today, first CD I have bought in 15 years?
@@n5iln It's a bass aria. :-D And shedid pretty well, but she didn't nail "O Mio Babbino Caro". But I don't blame her for that. In the end she is a cross-over singer but not an opera singer. Floor herself says in her master class that she knows that theory but she by far isn't as good as a professional opera singer. That's ok, because it isn't her genre and for a rock singer she does it very well. You might take a look at Patricia Janeckova singing that aria. She won the Czech version of AGT ten years ago at the age of 12 and is now becoming one of the best sopranos in the world. At the time when she was singing "O Mio Babbino Caro", she was 13. And that's another class when it comes to opera singing. Today she is 22 and a lot better than back then.
@@Nikioko well Maybe, but she never covered that song, so u cant assume..... i guess professional opera singer cant combine symphonic metal and opera like floor does... People love her for her talent and how she brings her own flavor to this genre
His reaction at 3:00 when he discovers the awesomeness of Floor and looks at the camera is priceless. I got chills watching someone else discover what I once experienced.
Lmao! I show this video to many people and all of the people I show it to are not into the music I'm into. However I call this performance/song one of the best songs of all time along with a couple other. That's really hard to call a song The Best of all time or call a performance at best of all time but the look you see on his face is what I always get at the end of this song when she hits those high notes. This is definitely her greatest performance of all time by far and better than any performance in my opinion. Glad that it worked out for her on tour and especially under the pressure of following yet another night with singer and under pressure to be better than the first singer Tarja. Thanks for pointing it out for me to rewind and look again. Love it
I think pretty much every bloke that sees this for the first time is secretly, quietly falling in love ha ha! If the sirens sang like that I'm not surprised the sailors crashed their ships on the rocks to get closer!
Sooo, I had never heard of Nightwish before I stumbled onto this reaction video about a month ago and I was blown away (thanks Doug, for bringing them into my life). They are so different from the music I usually listen to. But now, after weeks of listening to their music, I just bought tickets to see them perform at the end of the year!!! So freaking excited for that. Guess I'm part of the army now :) :)
If Emppu were to explode and his love and compassion scattered over the world there would never be a war again... He's colloquially known as "the smiling man". He's also super tiny which is just makes you wonder how so much positive energy can fit into such a little fellow. He's a friggin legend.
Greatest show on Earth, live at tampere.. I think you will enjoy that one more, a lot more composition and arrangements, and more instruments. This should be your next Nightwish reaction, I would love to hear your analysis on that one. Thanks for the great reaction
Exactly what I was thinking. As a classical composer Doug does not really need to get a feel for the band first before delving into the more epic Nightwish works. Note: the beginning of "The Greatest Show on Earth" has a bit of Phillip Glass influence feel.
Noooooo! The Studio version.. that's where you can here the orchestration track much more clearly and that is what classical composer should hear also...
@@JanneTarhanen I concur with this. I find Greatest Show On Earth to be the ONLY Nightwish song I have heard in which I prefer the studio version of. It is much easier to hear everything in the studio version.
You mentioned Heart. The singer of Nightwish, Floor Jansen, has a cover on her youtube channel of 'Alone', by Heart. You know, maybe something to check out at some point.
"In the beginning God created Music, and said it was good" "Next he created Nightwish and said it was excellent" "He then created Floor Jansen and dropped his microphone, for he had created perfection"
Definitely. And good old "Nightwish - Phantom of the Opera (End of Era)" with Tarja and epic Marko (that's the baseplayers who also sings quite impressively)
Haven't listened to it hundreds of times. At least dozens though. And yea, same here. When I really get into the song I always get goosebumps, and tears in my eyes at certain parts.
The keyboardist is the composer/writer for 90% of NW songs. Believe me when I tell you not all of their sings use the minor 3rd. They are all quite unique and he is immensely talented. Great reaction. Gabriel will be along soon to give you the full scoop on this amazing band!
Well they don't tend to be crazy complicated musically because generally they're aiming to showcase the vocalist, so even if they could play more complex lines that would kind of defeat the point a lot of the time. Although they do have some more complicated fare. But like, if you're a vocalist focused band, you want the focus to be on the vocal line, not on the guitarist shredding in the background.
Which isn't like a diss on them at all, it's just saying that like the focus is supposed to be the vocalist, so the musicians are probably not shredding as much face as they can, even on their shreddier pieces.
When he calls her a 'star y'all' less than two minutes in, you know the final minute is going to - ... *Floor* him. Yeah there's dat stank face. You know it's good when dat stank face makes an appearance.
Hobby composer here who's done some metal in the past... the thing with that chord progression is that it IS powerful. It's basically THE sound of metal music. If you stray away from that, you stray away from what metal fans want and like to hear. Pop has it's "the chord progression" metal has it's own etc. If you want to hear metal using a bit different progressions you start to go towards neo-classical metal, but there again harmonic minor rules over. I've tried to write neo-classical and it gives you more freedom for expression, but there just are things you can't avoid even if you want to. The sound of metal has certain demands :D Sure, I've done songs with different progressions in metal style, but it's hard to avoid without it going to another sub-genre of metal like folk or neo-classical or something.... :) (You can check my bad metal attempts by names: "Icchan - Obsolete Hero", and "Icchan - Lands Of Green". They're on YT freely available.)
There is no reason to call your metal attempts "bad". I listened to the first one and it is pretty badass. Good job! The only thing wrong with it is the opening keyboard instrument sounds like one song from the band Styx. ;) VERY good. Don't diminish your work. It is very good!
I've listened to this song so many times... Yet I still got chills when Floor started singing. I love this woman, the whole band so deeply. They're my fav for almost 15 years now.
You ain't seen anything yet , check out the song "Storytime" from the same show Wacken 2013. This will blow you away , The singer is (Floor Jansen) she has a u tube channel and has covers, and she's a vocal instructor & has master classes on there also
Ah there you ARE Robert! The Lame Dad here in his personal account! Glad you found The Daily Doug, he has a GREAT show for commenting! Now to get Doug doing a LOT more NW! lol
Some of their more diverse compositions would be "the greatest show on earth" and "the poet and the Pendulum." You can catch some of the videos from their performances subtitled, even though they are all in English, it helps hearing the exact lyrics.
While I agree, for Greatest you need to understand the lyrics - what the words mean. And for Poet you need to research the events that lead up to it. If not you're only reacting to the arrangement - while important - it's nowhere close as important as the lyrics. Those are masterpieces of art, and I usually suggest getting into and understanding the artist first. If he's up for an analytical challenge, I'd suggest When The Water Breaks progressive track composed and performed live by Liquid Tension Experiment: ua-cam.com/video/aSU0xBGfkfg/v-deo.html Oh, and from the comments there I just learned that LTE3 is a thing. Holy crap. Back to Nightwish. Greatest and Poet are masterpieces, but shouldn't come early to reactioneers (?).
I've noticed some discrepancies between the subtitles and the actual lyrics, including in GLS. It's annoying, but hey, I obviously don't run the world, or Floor would be recognized worldwide as the talent she is.
@@PJBonoVox I agree if talking about "casual reactors", but in the case of a real composer/musician I think they can be interesting, adding some knowledge for all of us. I really appreciate competent reactions.
@@Fabi72g Yeah, you're probably right. I just want this guy to diversify because he's obviously got a tremendous amount of musical knowledge to impart.
Wacken is a small village in my home state of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany having usually every year a huge metal festival, the whole village takes part in helping.
Floor Jansen is the third singer since late 2012. This concert only months after she started singing with them. She nailed every song by previous two singers and made them her own. Try live performance of The Greatest Show On Earth at Tampere 2015.
Hey Doug! I'm a big nightwish fan, so I'm happy to see you kinda diving into this band. I won't give any further suggestions for Nightwish, as I'm sure many other commenters will have all the same suggestions I'd give, so how about something not Nightwish? Ne Obliviscaris - And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope. An interesting fact about this song that might nudge you towards listening to it is that it is(was?) studied at the Sydney Conservatorium in Australia. The professor teaching it, Matthew Hindson, said this: "I will be presenting 'And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope' to the composition students at the Conservatorium next semester as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques." It's essential Metal listening, in my opinion.
I don't know if anyone has told you yet, but the orchestral and choral tracks for Nightwish are actually recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Metro Voices Choir. Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist) is the composer of almost all their music and has been nicknamed the metal Mozart. Regarding the fairly standard progressions in this song, that is not typical of their music. I'd recommend "Song of Myself" next. Not only does it demonstrate some really clever songwriting, but it will also introduce you to the vocal stylings of bassist Marko Heitala (who sadly announced he was stepping away from music a few weeks ago), and you'll see why many of us consider him to be as good of a singer as Floor.
As a violinist and composer with a classical background, I’m not as familiar with metal, but have always been a fan of what little of it I’ve heard. Behind the long hair, theater, and fantastic outfits are very well produced and performed compositions. In fact, I showed one of my students some similarities between Bach and metal and it blew his mind. I wouldn’t be surprised if some or all of these artists spent more than a few years immersed in classical training either. Thanks for sharing your reaction!
Hey! Violinist and composer here as well, but with a deep and abiding love of metal. I think the thing that I love most about the genre is that it seems to be one of the last real bastions of talented, technical players. A lot of modern rap and pop simply doesn't require the composing and instrumental talent that metal does, especially if you're going to be like Nightwish and have your music be accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The sheet music for Ghost Love Score is also fascinating because you can see the incredible talent of the composer weaving a Finnish metal band into a classical opera.
Perhaps you would like to listen to Tina S playing a metalized version of the third movement from Moonlight Sonata. It has over 32 million views. It was transcribed for electric guitar. She averages 7 notes a second for 6 minutes, all the arpeggios are tapped and she slides while tapping. The video is done in one take and is uncut and unedited . She does not drop a note and has flawless technique You can find her here ua-cam.com/video/o6rBK0BqL2w/v-deo.html In all she has 16 videos with over 160 million views. She specializes in playing technically difficult guitar solos. She has not posted anything in the last 4 to 5 years
Just wish to say: This is the best reaction ever to a metal song, it's amazing to see an expert talking about the geniality of these songs. Thank you very much for this content Doug, for real.
The DVD is called “Showtime Storytime” and yes, it is fun to watch. Anything from that Wacken 2013 show is great, but I’d especially recommend Song of Myself, Storytime, Romanticide, and Everdream. You’ll see they’re pretty diverse...not all of their songs sound like this one, but Floor...the singer...always sounds incredible. In fact, this song you just watched was song #13 of 15 in the set, so by the time she sang this, she’d already been singing for 90-ish minutes.
The only issue with that DVD is the whole show is sped up ever so slightly for some reason, maybe runtime. But if you know their music it really throws you off.
@@shorey66 that’s kind of a misleading statement. The DVD release was the proper speed. The playback matches the live recording. The Blu-ray release had a playback that was about 5% slower than actually recorded. See below examples from Romanticide: as soon as Floors vocal lines start you can hear the artificial stretch to her melodies from the slower speed. Now maybe the original studio recordings from Tarja’s era was a slower BPM for her vocal style and Tuomas decided to increase the BPM for Floor’s vocal style; but that’s what it means to arrange music for the best overall sound with all parts considered. ua-cam.com/video/mr61tTHjJ2k/v-deo.html (slowed) ua-cam.com/video/zz_7OCCQlXs/v-deo.html (correct) ua-cam.com/video/cAwtzi7Q3Bk/v-deo.html (full concert, 1080p, correct speed)
@@shorey66 for sure. The speed change is minor enough to not sound strange to someone listening to NW for the first time, but definitely jarring if you’ve heard the song before. I always cringe just a little bit in the inside when a reactor picks one of those slow versions without knowing.
Remember, this is only ONE of their songs - not all their songs have the same structure/composition, unlike many pop/rock bands with cookie-cutter songs. I’ve actually heard several songwriter/composers on here, say that Nightwish is one of the bands who’s songs vary the most in composition and style - while still maintaining a unique common “flavour”. Also, this song is 17 years old, so the band’s composer/songwriter (the keyboardist) has evolved quite a bit since then ;) Normally people would now recommend a bunch of their other “best of” (there are soo many, lol), before deeming you ready for on of their other two long major epics. However, since you’re specifically looking at structure and composition, and seem to both appreciate and “need” more complex compositions, I’d recommend that you now try and experience “The Greatest Show On Earth” - Live from Tampere :) It’s about the whole evolution of life on earth, has Richard Dawkins speaking on it, and is a whopping 24 minutes long. It is a masterpiece lyrically and musically, and I think you’d really love it (btw, there's a subtitled version here on UA-cam). Lastly, I gotta say that I’m really surprised by you saying that you had a hard time understanding what Floor was singing - and blaming Floor’s pronunciation for that. That puzzles me, since every single vocalist (contemporary and classical), vocal coach, musician, and songwriter that that I've seen react to Floor’s singing (and there’s been a lot, since I’m rather obsessed, lol) - both with- and without the band - think that she has EXCELLENT diction. Now, I don’t know your background, but I’m wondering if you’re simply not experienced listening to metal, and thus not used to “separating out” the vocal from that huge wall of sound that it’s accompanied by?! Anyway, it was just a thought (and not meant as criticism) - because that statement literally made me go “WTF?!”, lol.
Yes! Great reaction and analysis! Seems like you have perfect pitch, am I right? It's nice for a change to learn a bit more about the song itself and its harmonic structure, rather than just watching a plain reaction video. Nothing against those but I really enjoyed your insights on the music. Thanks and please do more! :)
I don't have perfect pitch...I have good relative pitch, and I usually tune up before doing one of these reactions...so that I have a fresh tonal reference.
@@Doug.Helvering hey Doug we NW fans appreciate the most when music professionals react to the greatest band /singer especially when they focus on the music, just an fyi reactor tip: after a pause please go back a bit before resuming for song continuity especially in mid vocal, your viewers will appreciate it :) ,fyi NW has the largest and most passionate fanbase on YT & this song is the most reacted to on YT ,some top reactors with 2.5 million views. cheers oh btw this song is but a small taste of their capabilities and Floor's amazing voice.
@@Doug.Helvering that you said “fresh tonal reference “ proves her point. You have a great professional perspective that fans will appreciate and wait to hear.
@@marcia3625 The concept of the show is that they bring together singers from different genres and have them sing songs of each other or songs that they themselves like from others. The singer who does the cover usually does so in his/her own genre. Henk Poort is a musical star known for Phantom of the opera, among other things. This is how the duet came about. The show is simply called "best singers".
Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen) has been around for a long time. She was about 32 for this concert and had been a frontwoman since she was 16. Her previous bands were After Forever then her own band called ReVamp before joining Nightwish in 2012. She also has some great songs she sang on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers from 2019. IMHO she's the best female singer alive now. She'll be turning 40 on Feb 21st this year. BTW, Nightwish typically has backtracks of the London Philharmonic and their choir.
Great reaction! Something you will quickly learn if you keep reacting to Nightwish is, this is but a small sample of their oeuvre, as they cover everything from folk, rock, trash metal, jazz, etc. with a metal bend to it backed by orchestra & choir. Tuomas the keyboardist is the composer of most of the music and also does the arrangements with co-arranger Pip Williams. They record the backing tracks with the London Philharmonic orchestra and choir. Saw the engineer on their 2015 album mention in a video that they record each group of instruments separately, so Tuomas can re-arrange them later for live performances and he said that for their most complex song, The Greatest Show On Earth, that they had to record over 600 tracks. I am sure that Nightwish fans will recommend plenty of performances to react to, so I will not put the emphasis on that, instead I will just mention that if the song was performed at Wacken 2013, this show has by far the best audio mix, followed closely by Wembley 2015, then Buenos Aires 2018 and finally Tampere 2015 (Except for The Greatest Show On Earth which is the most spectacular at Tampere). I would also suggest the solo work of Tuomas Music Inspired by the Life and Times of Scrooge, especially the song A Lifetime Of Adventure and also Nightwish's latest double album Human Nature, for which the second disc is entirely a 31 minutes, 8 part instrumental piece, with full orchestra and choir called All the Works of Nature Which Adorn the World.
Honestly Mr. Doug, I admire you for your high level of expertise on harmony and music theory in general. It's the first time that I see someone analysing a piece of music so deeply on the spot.
Floor is very versatile, she did all kind of songs on the 2019 season of the show "Beste zangers". One epic song she did was the Phantom of the opera, she did it with the actual Dutch Phantom Henk Poort who is a well known classical singer. ua-cam.com/video/plCScjvDOJM/v-deo.html
Hi Doug. Nightwish are fantastic & I’m impressed with your reaction style, so I’ve now subscribed to your Chanel . I am also going to “insist” you react to an extremely young Soprano singer by the name of Amira Willighagen, who won Holland’s Got Talent at the age of nine, without even a single singing lesson. Since then, & after commencing singing lessons, she has performed in some 13 countries and has sung in at least 5 languages. Many of her performances have been to a packed auditorium supported by a full orchestra and backup singers. Amira is now 16 years of age. She has a fan base totalling “millions” & there is no doubt she is already up there with the worlds best Sopranos . The sky is the limit, or maybe that should read universe, for this delightful, down to earth person with the voice of an angel. Your genre may not be classical, as mine certainly wasn’t, but that all changed after hearing her angelic & powerful voice, & I now listen to her every single day. Once you start reacting to Amira, I guarantee you won’t be able to stop. She is simply out of this world. She is an Angel. May I introduce you to Amira by recommending the following Arias. 1. O Mio Babbino Caro at age 10. The world renown musician and conductor Andre Rieu invited Amira to sing at his concert at Maastricht to an audience of 15,000 people who gave her a standing ovation. Make sure it’s the Andre Rieu performance. 2. Ave Maria by Gomez at the Canisius Church age 11. Simply outstanding. 3. Nella Fantasia ( pronounced Fanta see ah) age 12 I could go on & on, but these would be a great start. Hoping these comments interest you enough to put her on your list to react to in the very near future. As you start reacting to her, you will no doubt find so much more about Amira’s journey. Cheers, Graeme.
It is the progression of Progressive Metal which is the progression of Progressive Rock which is the progression of classical music and rock music. Or in other words: Pop is the progression of folk music, rock is the progression of classical art music and hip hop is the progression of vulgarity.
My Bucket List of Performances would be to have Floor and Dimash collaborate, esp. in a live show. Holy Sh*t, the stage would probably melt from the sheer talent. ;-)
She is great, no doubt about that, but she is definitely not the best vocalist on earth. Get out of you niche and learn some more of the world of music. There is a whole big world to discover when you open your eyes and ears.
Nikioko - she is the best female vocalist on earth because of her versatility, technique and presence... perhaps not the best in some niches, but overall, there is literally no one that is able to beat her... proof us wrong...
I discover this video late, but thanks other folks recommending nightwish. Went to them with floor in 2018 and went to Tarja just several months ago. Hope they come to us again.
You may have already looked up the lyrics, but the important parts are the outro, and the two instances earlier in the song where this part was introduced. Each time, the choir sings the four lines while the lead sings the first line over the top of it. First two times it crops up: "My fall will be for you My love will be in you If you be the one to cut me I'll bleed forever" Then in the outro is changes slightly to: "My fall will be for you My love will be in you You were the one to cut me So I’ll bleed forever" This live version goes more for the performance aspect, so it is easier to hear in the studio version with their original singer. When I listen to it, close my eyes and let the song wash over me, by the time it hits that outro the words are hitting right in the feels, and if it doesn't choke you up just a little bit no matter how often you hear it then your soul is dead :)
Right?/? Offers a great delivery to what's to come and works for most. At least he continued to say that he likes it he just was questioning why everyone does that because there are other ways to give the same feel other than using that method. However I don't care. I like this feel especially in this song. Lol
Wow Doug, I don't often comment on videos but this has been a triple-treat. I discovered your channel a few days ago and have loved rediscovering old favorites through your insight. I also have never heard Nightwish and was blown away by those vocals, nice pipes! As a chaser, I played at Wacken years ago and this brings back so many good memories, what a wonderful friendly venue. I'm also in awe and simultaneously envious of your ear.
This live version is amazing but it's a little easier to hear all of the orchestral parts on the studio album (different singer who you can check out on their live performance of Phantom of the Opera)
Dear Mr.Helvering, Having had your respective channel recommended by my oven today while making pizza, I accepted and got this video playing on my kitchen TV right away. It's been quite a pleasure having the chance of listening to a professional composer giving a thorough analysis of one of my favorite bands' music. There are indeed quite a number of details I never thought about giving attention to while listening Nightwish. I'd like to give a small recommendation, and if it happens that I formulate something in a silly way please forgive the ignorance for I am a technology scientist not quite familiar with your field of expertise: It has been just shy of a month since you introduced yourself to the music of Nightwish band, thus it still makes for a relatively live topic for me to say how one should absolutely not miss their work from the period of the original band's lineup. I whole-heartedly suggest you explore their work back from the period a lady named Tarja Turunen was their lead singer. I am sure you've already been given the similar recommendations regarding the lead vocalist of the original founding Nightwish lineup. Nonetheless, I'd really like if somone like you would become a bit more introduced to how Turunen's voice fits into Nightwish's rhythmically relatively simple yet incredibly rich neo-classical composition together with a classic pentatonic heavy metal - the vocal performance which makes her a widely known and critically acclaimed artist, performing Nightwish songs the way none yet managed to achieve to this day. That is all quite a history now since we're talking about a period both of us were in high-school. Even among the kids enjoying Nightwish today with the incredible Mrs.Jansen as the lead vocalist, there's still a wide appreciation towards Mrs.Turunen's irreplaceably unique vocal abilities in this metal sub-genre. In case you decide to do a follow up video with a likewise fine scrutiny of the earlier Nightwish work with Tarja Turunen that influenced the whole metal industry and made Nightwish who they are today - here is one of their live performance videos from 2003. from my private Nightwish collection that I remastered and upscaled from 360p do 1080p: drive.google.com/file/d/1UkvMdwqA7htsWW57y_-TbAtWxOlSp_W-/view?usp=sharing All the best !
If I just remember right, Hans Zimmer is Holopainen's (the composer of Nightwish) one of the biggest inspirations so there actually might be some Zimmer-vibes over there (Pirates of Caribbean)
Welcome to the amazingly enjoyable world of the tightest band in symphonic metal. Really great reaction. Loved your analysis especially coming from a professional classical composer. We've subscribed so that we can follow you on your journey with the NW community(army). We've been avid fans for three years since our son sent us this performance as our first. It set a very high bar, but we think you'll enjoy the other performances that Gabriel has listed. No two songs are alike thanks to the genius of Tuomas Holopainen whose talents you are sure to appreciate. Floor is such an extraordinary talent, yet so down to earth. She has done some very good solo work as well which you will be introduced to and won't want to miss them. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.
If you’d like to check more prog metal, I can suggest checking out Ayreon. Very good project by Dutch composer Arjen Lucassen with lots of guest vocalists, and all of them are metal stars :)
This rock star is the Dutch queen of symphonic metal, Floor Jansen (Yahn-sen). Tuomas the keyboardist composes most of the music and lyrics for Nightwish, He is very influenced by movie scores. A favorite composer is Hans Zimmer of Pirates of the Caribbean fame. The lyrics are very poetic in style and were accessible in the captions. Loved your analysis! It seems you have perfect pitch my friend? See you soon I hope? Peace. 🎶🎶🎶😊👍✌
Doug! I'm so happy you got to check this one out. I was fortunate to see Floor once live with her previous band After Forever many moons ago, but even on a tiny stage with maybe 2 dozen people in the crowd, she had such presence and sang her heart out. I love that you mentioned the color that Floor brings with her voice. You should also check out this song with the original vocalist, Tarja Turunen. She has more of a traditional operatic voice, but brings different "color" to this song that I think is as equally impressive and enjoyable, just in a different way. Also the lyrics are just as beautiful as the song! Definitely give those a read!
When composers hear Floor it literally changes their beliefs about what they could ask a singer to do. It changes music. Possibly also true for a few others but Floor expands the possibilities in several directions.
Now, you’re delving into “Prog- Metal”. Excellent musicianship. Give a listen to Dream Theater. Amazing Prog-Metal group. Metropolis Pt. 1, My Glass Prison, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, The Dance of Eternity - just to name a few. Their library is immense.
Floor Jansen is the best, man. Go back and listen to her After Forever days too. Just stunning voice. She also has some classical operatic tracks on UA-cam.
It's one of their most loved songs, but as an introduction to Nightwish I would have started with the 1999 version of Sleeping Sun, with Tarja Turunen on vocals. Also The Poet and The Pendulum with their much underrated vocalist Anette Olzon and the inimitable Marco Hietala is a good introduction to the marvelous world of Nightwish.
So I've been listening to Nightwish since the 90's, and this is probably my favorite song of theirs. I LOVE Floor Jansen, but I still miss their original singer - Tarja Tarunen. She had a more operatic style and I think perhaps Nightwish was the first metal band to combine that very operatic soprano singing with their theatrical metal style.
Can’t agree more. I stopped listening to Nightwish after Tarja left and was quite disappointed with how they sounded with Anette Olzon. However, hearing Floor has gotten me excited to check out their new stuff!
@@manixpc Same here. I totally skipped Olzon years. Also I am so glad Floor came to band so this song can be performed again, Anette could not do it. Even I still prefer Tarja (because you know, that's why this band caught me), Floor is GREAT
"Guys, learn some new progressions"............. within seconds, band proceeds to take off into several different sections of new progressions and key changes. Goes unnoticed.
He just said that about the way they go back to the root note ! Just that progression is what he thinks is over played in the metal realm which is true actually!
As somebody who knows both Mozart's and Nightwish's music, I can't follow that "Metal Mozart" meme. Mozart died young at the age of 34, was a womanizer and used scatology all the time. He wrote 41 symphonies, several operas, sacred music and is widely considered as one of the three best composers of all time, along with Bach and Beethoven. None of that applies to Tuomas Holopainen.
@@Nikioko as you said, “it’s a meme”. It’s just a nickname that is catchy because alliteration. Do I think he truly walks in the shoes of Mozart or Bach? Lol no. Do I think his music is unique, tastefully original, and does a great job of keeping my attention in the music by not hearing what is typically expected? For sure. He is a well accomplished music composer in the wide spectrum of metal; specifically symphonic metal. He composes all the symphonic parts himself and teams up with Pip Williams to arrange it for the London Philharmonic Orchestra. That’s why Mozart is the nickname. It’s not suppose to represent some notion like “the next Mozart” or something. Side trivia: Pip Williams even stated in an interview that he thought Tuomas was miles beyond his contemporary peers like Dream Theater in terms of composing in metal music.
@@pro-v7500 I see. But maybe he isn't the Metal Mozart but the Metal Mendelssohn? But by his compositions I would rather say he is the Metal Mahler. :-D
@@Nikioko Dude, Mozart and Beethoven are basically the only classical composers names most people can spit out if asked. since mozart was already considered one of the greatest in his time and holopainen one of the greatest in the metal genre, this comparison still holds up. and 'metal mozart' has a nice ring to it, other than metal mendelssohn or metal monteverdi, despite the alliterations.
@@FryingPan76 Maybe. But I like both Monteverdi's madrigals and Mendelssohn's folk songs (and his oratorios and symphonies, of course). But when it comes to the pomp of the music, that would most likely compare to Mahler, especially symphonies 2 and 3. And the ring would be similar to Metal Mozart. But I see how it comes: you mustn't put too much musicological knowledge into this. ;-)
my new hobby is watching people discovering nightwish 😂😂😂😂
Same!🤘😁 With all of my favourite bands, actually. We can't go to concerts, but we can do this... I'm such a nerd... 😄
Yup!
Mine too! ! And see them have their first Floor-gasm ......
Will he go down the "Beste Zangers with Floor" - road?
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer.
So be prepared. lol "

The links presented above are with the current singer of the band, Floor Jansen, since I'm a fan of the recent era of the band, with Floor as the singer. I have nothing against previous singers, but I do not consider myself the most suitable person to give specific recommendations from their repertoires.
** I think it's your place, fans of previous Nightwish eras, to present to the reactors the best recommendations with Tarja Turunen and Anette Olzon, because you know and appreciate them directly. I encourage you to add the best recommendations in the comments. **
That being said, I will add here the message left the other days by an old fan of the band, @Fabrizio Gorla: " To be fair to the old fanbase, you may want to include also some of these songs. Just be fair and don’t make a comparison if you don’t want an open war in your comment section.

Then 7 weeks ago she dropped the third cover, in Dutch: "Is Dit Nou Later" from Stef Bos - already 243K views. Just before Christmas she made a powerful cover of "Ave Maria" - already 238K views. Four weeks ago she added a remastered / remixed version of the first one, "Let It Go" - already 143K. Then three weeks ago she added to the list a powerful cover of "Adagio" by Lara Fabian (!!!) - 282K views now..

Omfg, What a die hard fan lmfao
Most people sing what they can, Floor sings what she wants.
True.

Fact!

Yes!!!!
My ex-wife called Floor "pitchy" after hearing her sing. Anyway, ex-wife.
bahahahaha
That's hilarious. Floor, pitchy? She's a rock, i don't think I've ever heard her off pitch, even in the most complex vocal runs.
Hahahaha LOVED that 😂
hahahaha
LOL
Tuomas Holopainen is probably the best composer in modern era of rock music. And Floor is absolutely one of the best singers of all time.
For sure, he definitely deserves more attention. I'm a big fan of Jeremy Soule and Hans Zimmer but I sincerely believe Tuomas could top those guys combined. He's an absolute genius when it comes to composing orchestral masterpieces.
She was always the singer the band wanted after they sacked Tarja, but couldn't get her at that time.
So the kettle has met with his pot?(Musically)
Agree and agree

Tuomas: "Floor, what's your voice range"?
Floor: "Yes".
I very much doubt that she can sing Osmin's aria from The Abduction from the Seraglio. :-D
@@Nikioko Don't know about that...she's already nailed down "O Mio Babbino Caro".
@@n5iln It's a bass aria. :-D
And shedid pretty well, but she didn't nail "O Mio Babbino Caro".
God this comment is not original
@@Nikioko well Maybe, but she never covered that song, so u cant assume..... i guess professional opera singer cant combine symphonic metal and opera like floor does... People love her for her talent and how she brings her own flavor to this genre

Love it

Sooo, I had never heard of Nightwish before I stumbled onto this reaction video about a month ago and I was blown away (thanks Doug, for bringing them into my life).
Phantom of the Opera...
maybe the Poet and the Pendulum too
@@JanneTarhanen I concur with this.
And that recent one is here third recording of it afaik. One in here After Forever period, and one in early Nightwish period
I second this suggestion

"Next he created Nightwish and said it was excellent"
"He then created Floor Jansen and dropped his microphone, for he had created perfection"

I’ve listened to this hundreds of times and yet it’s goosebumps and tears every time. Floor is a goddess!
Gabriel will have problems with posting the links. ;-)
I have listened to this song a thousand times.. and still amaze me.
Floor Jansen rules!!!

The sound of metal has certain demands :D
Sure, I've done songs with different progressions in metal style, but it's hard to avoid without it going to another sub-genre of metal like folk or neo-classical or something.... :)
(You can check my bad metal attempts by names: "Icchan - Obsolete Hero", and "Icchan - Lands Of Green". They're on YT freely available.)
There is no reason to call your metal attempts "bad". I listened to the first one and it is pretty badass. Good job! The only thing wrong with it is the opening keyboard instrument sounds like one song from the band Styx. ;)
VERY good. Don't diminish your work. It is very good!
Heard both, like the first very much.

Some of their more diverse compositions would be "the greatest show on earth" and "the poet and the Pendulum." You can catch some of the videos from their performances subtitled, even though they are all in English, it helps hearing the exact lyrics.
Was about to say the same...
Believe some of the others might be too flat or mainstream for him to be challenging?
While I agree, for Greatest you need to understand the lyrics - what the words mean. And for Poet you need to research the events that lead up to it. If not you're only reacting to the arrangement - while important - it's nowhere close as important as the lyrics. Those are masterpieces of art, and I usually suggest getting into and understanding the artist first.
If he's up for an analytical challenge, I'd suggest When The Water Breaks progressive track composed and performed live by Liquid Tension Experiment:

Back to Nightwish. Greatest and Poet are masterpieces, but shouldn't come early to reactioneers (?).
@@gottagowork Totally agree. Loads of background needed for the Poet. Otherwise he will miss most of it. Like most reactors...
I've noticed some discrepancies between the subtitles and the actual lyrics, including in GLS. It's annoying, but hey, I obviously don't run the world, or Floor would be recognized worldwide as the talent she is.

Biggest understatement ever uttered!

The professor teaching it, Matthew Hindson, said this: "I will be presenting 'And Plague Flowers The Kaleidoscope' to the composition students at the Conservatorium next semester as an exemplar in structure, mixing timbres, meters, modes, how to approach virtuosity, sound and noise, extended performance and techniques."
It's essential Metal listening, in my opinion.
@@vsGoliath96 I’ll be sure to them a good listen! Thanks!

@@shorey66 for sure. The speed change is minor enough to not sound strange to someone listening to NW for the first time, but definitely jarring if you’ve heard the song before. I always cringe just a little bit in the inside when a reactor picks one of those slow versions without knowing.
@@pro-v7500 so was the DVD ok, only the Blu-ray showed down?
Remember, this is only ONE of their songs - not all their songs have the same structure/composition, unlike many pop/rock bands with cookie-cutter songs.
I’ve actually heard several songwriter/composers on here, say that Nightwish is one of the bands who’s songs vary the most in composition and style - while still maintaining a unique common “flavour”.
Also, this song is 17 years old, so the band’s composer/songwriter (the keyboardist) has evolved quite a bit since then ;)
Normally people would now recommend a bunch of their other “best of” (there are soo many, lol), before deeming you ready for on of their other two long major epics.
However, since you’re specifically looking at structure and composition, and seem to both appreciate and “need” more complex compositions, I’d recommend that you now try and experience “The Greatest Show On Earth” - Live from Tampere :)
It’s about the whole evolution of life on earth, has Richard Dawkins speaking on it, and is a whopping 24 minutes long.

Oh yeah on that show I can't understand. They were amazing.
YESSSS!!!!!!!
Yes, that was one of the highlights of Dutch television of the last ten years!
A must see/hear/experience!

3. Nella Fantasia ( pronounced Fanta see ah) age 12
I could go on & on, but these would be a great start.
Hoping these comments interest you enough to put her on your list to react to in the very near future.
As you start reacting to her, you will no doubt find so much more about Amira’s journey.
Cheers, Graeme.
I felt Nightwish was coming, it's the natural progression, classic music + metal = symphonic metal, and which better band to react than Nightwish?
haggard. haggard would be better to react to, much larger symphonic element.
It is the progression of Progressive Metal which is the progression of Progressive Rock which is the progression of classical music and rock music.
Or in other words:
Pop is the progression of folk music, rock is the progression of classical art music and hip hop is the progression of vulgarity.
Floor is more than just a "Rock Star", she is the best vocalist on earth. Keep listening, you will see.

First two times it crops up:
"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
If you be the one to cut me
I'll bleed forever"
Then in the outro is changes slightly to:
"My fall will be for you
My love will be in you
You were the one to cut me
So I’ll bleed forever"
This live version goes more for the performance aspect, so it is easier to hear in the studio version with their original singer. When I listen to it, close my eyes and let the song wash over me, by the time it hits that outro the words are hitting right in the feels, and if it doesn't choke you up just a little bit no matter how often you hear it then your soul is dead :)

Having had your respective channel recommended by my oven today while making pizza, I accepted and got this video playing on my kitchen TV right away.
It's been quite a pleasure having the chance of listening to a professional composer giving a thorough analysis of one of my favorite bands' music.
There are indeed quite a number of details I never thought about giving attention to while listening Nightwish.
I'd like to give a small recommendation, and if it happens that I formulate something in a silly way please forgive the ignorance for I am a technology scientist not quite familiar with your field of expertise:
It has been just shy of a month since you introduced yourself to the music of Nightwish band, thus it still makes for a relatively live topic for me to say how one should absolutely not miss their work from the period of the original band's lineup.
In case you decide to do a follow up video with a likewise fine scrutiny of the earlier Nightwish work with Tarja Turunen that influenced the whole metal industry and made Nightwish who they are today - here is one of their live performance videos from 2003. from my private Nightwish collection that I remastered and upscaled from 360p do 1080p:

good luck!
Doug, your knowledge of music is so impressive. Really enjoy your channel!
You ain't seen nothing yet when it comes to Nightwish, seriously!
Ah, so this is where the rest of the Nightwish Army went. I'm always 5 days behind y'all 😅
I’m 6 months behind lol oh well I will catch up eventually
Wow her voice is amazing. Words don't even do it justice
your reactions are the best, i appreciate the asnalytics and the competence, good job
So excited for your first time discovering symphonic metal in general and this band and this song specifically - great intro to the genre!
You should listen to song "The Phantom of the Opera" by Nightwish, and by Iron Maiden too. Love from Serbia. 💕🇷🇸🤘
It's worth mentioning the Nightwish Phantom is from the musical, but Iron Maiden's Phantom pre-dates the musical and is a completely different song.
Completely different songs but both very good
Also, the Nightwish version of Phantom was performed by Tarja, the first singer of the band. Different but still epic.
Also the Floor Janson and Nick Porte from Best Zangers performing Phantom, an amazing rendition.

YES - THIS. Definitely. MY favorite album is The Astonishing
Yeah, I think DT would give him a level of musicianship he's used to hearing but with a metal bent.
you forget Ayreon
Agree with these suggestions, great music an on it's own level
Hi Doug. A great reaction.... I really enjoyed listening to your commentary.
9:13 *Max Payne face activated*
Doug: "Hello!"
The Netherlands: "You're welcome."
Floor stands somewhat over 6 feet tall (in bare feet), plus, she's wearing 5 inch heels here.....audience was 82,000
Floor Jansen is the best, man. Go back and listen to her After Forever days too. Just stunning voice. She also has some classical operatic tracks on UA-cam.
Watching this made me very happy. Great job, man. 👏👏👏
This is one of those songs that gives me goosebumps even though I can't understand much of the lyrics.
Great reaction :)
In my eyes (an ears) Tarja was WAS Nightwish. The band was a shadow of it's former self after she "left"
@@manixpc Same here. I totally skipped Olzon years. Also I am so glad Floor came to band so this song can be performed again, Anette could not do it.
Even I still prefer Tarja (because you know, that's why this band caught me), Floor is GREAT
this is gonna be fun, i wonder how many people will actually recommend floors version of heart :)
Haha, sorry I have to mention this - Heart's Alone is also a cover from I-Ten ;) - and Floor's version is fantastic of course!
@@bobsuisse2 she needs to clean it up like she did Frozen
Glad you liked it - one of my favourite bands. And Floor Jansen? Man, she's a killer!
Watching this reaction video for the first time. Can't wait for his reaction to the "Floorgasm" LOL
"Great sound!" The Nightwish army says "Just wait." Try Romanticide from the same concert
"Guys, learn some new progressions"............. within seconds, band proceeds to take off into several different sections of new progressions and key changes. Goes unnoticed.
Meh another modulation blablabla
Yea, dick move to show his wannabe elite cravings.
@@robonguitarnz Time to drop the tribalism and accept that someone doesn't idolize something the same as you do.
Gotta love seeing the musically illiterate people get offended by someone able to break down their favorite music
He just said that about the way they go back to the root note ! Just that progression is what he thinks is over played in the metal realm which is true actually!
Yass , you will get into our Metal Mozart's brain I am sure, Tuomas Holopainen.🎶 Floorgasm Achieved !!!
But I see how it comes: you mustn't put too much musicological knowledge into this. ;-)
so crazy that I'm watching these vids of yal😂... feeling I know you very well... but never met you! Love what your doing Doug! Thnx
Dude some of your reactions are priceless. Love it.
