Great video Jon, very informative :)
Thanks for the educational video that you won't find in most books ... Just bought my T-Blondi today ... Thanks for sharing this great video!!!
my pleasure. Again, it ranges depending on whose selling them. I've have seen some of true T.blondi and apophysis going for $200 as 2nd-3rd instars here.
T.stirmi are commonly sold as wild caught adults (around $90-120, but as with wild caughts adults, age is unknown) than captive bred slings, which are kinda rare to see now. But in any case $90.80 is still a good price, especially considering its captive bred
watching this video will help you out. Keep them really humid and fairly warm
Feeding mice to a therophosa genus is fine if its once in a blue moon. Once or twice a year But yeah your right, too much can cause calcification of the exoskeleton.
Good advice though.
And (sorry for the rant by the way) If you've seen any of my videos on "Stubbsy", she is a prime example of humidity neglect. The ad on Craigslist showed her with 6 legs, the back two entirely ripped out of socket. The day I went to pick her up he had to give me the entire enclosure because she'd molted. She had four warped, functioning central legs, the front legs torn off and two extremely deformed "stubs" in back. The next two molts showed the stubs actually healed slower than a clean pull.
@990Brogan
I've mentioned it quite a few times...I simply soak the substrate then allow it to completely dry before soaking it again. I mist every 2 weeks
@ultum4tegunz
To be honest, I don't even use heat mats at all. I have generally all my Ts in the warmest place in the house (my T room). I'm sure you've already know my pair of stirmi, if you remember me say in few of the watering videos I blocked up 80% of the ventilation and soak the substrate with WARM water...and it keeps high humidity +heat
@PF718
Apophysis are the largest members and few are known to grow to a 13'' legspan
Hello, I enjoyed your video. I find it informative since I just got a new T. blondi. I got her this Saturday. She's about 5 to 6 inches and she has settled down quite nicely. She dosen't show any signs of agression but she will flick hair and stridulate. Since Saturday nigh, I gave her one cricket to see if she would eat and she did. I gave her a day and yesterday, I gaver her 2 superworms wich she ate immediately. I haven't found a name for her yet. Have a nice day! From a very excited owner!
Please keep in mind I live in Canada, not the US. I believe it was mentioned in the video about prices, the prices are around $100-150 here for an 2nd instar.
OUCH! What a difficult T. looks like they're are off of my future T collection if I'm going to get one.
@11808Clover
I can't get cockroaches because of my parents, which is why I can't use B.dubia roaches as feeders. The only pets I have is pretty much what you've seen, the Ts, the 2 scorpions, Maggie and that zany Krab I picked up.
You can try those Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches but I haven't the idea how to care for one. I would assume a typical terrestrial setup, but that's my guess
@ahickin
probably. I;m assuming he's 6 years old. When I bought it from the expo, I never asked the guy how old it was.
@PF718
That's actually hwy 440 and the petstore is just off the 13. I'm like right off the 440. It takes me 4-5 minutes to get to Angelo's. Yup I know him well, he was featured in T feeding video 18.
You recorded this on my birthday!
it depends on which spider. You can release it outside
Find these vids very informational thank you man
@warnher
I know what you mean... I too had a T.blondi many years ago too, it last 4 years...they're very delicate like the avics.
The price for a T. blondi is not so bad, I got mine (6 inches about) at a pet store for 200$ in Laval. Also, I think that the price of any tarantula is not so bad considering that they live for a very long time. When it comes to males, I will negotiate the price, which I have done for my male G. rosea and the pet store understood. Thank you for the info.!
@PF718
Hmm!! You're close to where I live. Wait a moment...did you get that blondi from Nature Pet Center in St-Dorothee?
@ahickin
Im not sure if you caught in the video, I mention that 10-12'' is typical size for T.stirmi and T.blondi. If you saw the mating video I uploaded days ago with my T.stirmi pair...those are full grown
Try a damp towel on one side of the tank for good humidity
Oh right ok mate thank u :-) how is maggie your haven't seen her in ages jon.
wow i need more mythbuster videos please
For now, yes. You will have to rehouse when it gets 6'' or so
Thanks! always helpful info!
(cont'd) known to eat them in the wild from time to time, but they are NOT a good staple. Rick West told me at one point that Sericopelmas are known to eat a lot of arboreal frogs in their native habitat...but for those reading this; Verts do NOT have the kind of nutrition needed. I believe wet molts are caused by the lack of proper invertebrate diet as opposed to occasional verts, though I'm not one to feed them verts much anymore, and only did in the past in severe cases of neglect.
I like the desert species better as you don't need that humidity and they aren't as prone to bad molts. I keep my wolf spiders in a desert type setup and they do great! My rose hair and two Texas Browns are very happy with their setups too. Have you ever had a wandering spider? I haven't yet but I do keep dark fishing and nursery webs and they are just as fun! I am hoping to get a phoneutria species soon if I can find one. I know they have a nasty bite but that doesn't scare me! I've handled black widows,brown recluses,and yellow sac spiders. I was bit by the sac spider and all I got was a little swelling and itchiness for a day afterwards. No rotting flesh wound as they say it has luckily.
I prefer the desert species also. They are much hardier. L Parahybana not a desert species, but are much hardier. They are much easier to keep, are inexpensive, and don't need the requirements of their slightly larger counterparts.
@ahickin
well, like I said in the video and shown in the pictures towards the end of the video, Blondi and stirmi are very similar colored species. The real dead giveaway are those patella hairs which should be very easy to see. Blondi have long hair on them, stirmi don't have any.
@ultum4tegunz
actually there's suspicions that they do get larger if they house them in larger terrariums. HOWEVER, not all theraphosa's reach that size
@AntiGravity909
stirmi generally have a dark chocolate brown color right after they molt
sick vid! shit when you watch prepare to learn teacher,jon here lol you know so much about tarantulas holy shit!O_O dude i remeber before i had any tarantulas nothing and i was watching one of your feeding vids at my buddy's house just chillin and with in a week i got my 1st tarantula (avic) next week i got a T.strimi and ya it was labled a T. blondi at the pet store. i have so many pets now haha..13 inch's on that one typ tho eh dude thats INSANE OFF THE CHAIN they hard to find in canada too?
T Blondi / Stirmi are considered for the advance/experienced keeper. Js
I've honestly never seen a T die to being fed mice. About 9 years ago I fed my A seemanni a few mice due to the condition she was in. She was also gravid, which I didn't know at the time and she molted prior to dropping it...but being a wild caught specimen in a petstore it's not uncommon to see them in pretty terrible shape.
She doesn't even eat many crickets anymore due to being around 16 years of age and having stopped growing years ago. I consider verts to be ok occasionally for T's (cont)
@Jon3800 The Nature Pet Center is on hwy 640 if I'm not mistaken. I've been going there for crickets and other live foods. I think there's a sale person that knows you, his name is Angelo. We were talking about T on youtube and he mentionned your name.
thanks jon, very informative vid
@ahickin
i'd say male is 6 and the female is around 8
Theraphosa blondi/stirmi get the largest up to 10-12''
@thegreatbasher
the huntsman DOES have a longer leg span than the Goliath but that does not make it "larger". Comparative by sheer mass, the Goliath is the MOST SPIDER in one package you'll ever find on Earth. Theraphosa Blondi can weigh up to 6 ounces, that's like having a Quarter Pounder WITH cheese drop onto your chest! the huntsman weights less than a third of that, making the Theraphosa Blondi the biggest spider in the world.
i just bought a 1in (avicularia versicolor) antilles treespider super fast ,very colorful and a 1in (brachypelma vagans) mexican red rump i am so pumped
Oh sorry mate didn't hear that part :-( bloody hell 10 or 12 inches that's huge. How old is your t stirmi male and female jon.
You can ask Dr. Samuel D. Marshall on breeding goliaths. He has experience with them and has some actual blondis.
@mtvful
to be honest, Rob's very careful with mice diet, he only feeds once a year, unlike the people I've seen on youtube that feed them nothing but mice, so I don't think that might have been the issue.
I could suspect her death from a molting complication, which is very typically of them given their immense size. Another factor could be humidity levels. Seeing as he loves to use 90 gallon tanks for these species, its harder to control humidity levels than the 10 gallons that I use
I had very little I never re-soak the substrate. I allow it to completely dry out before I do it again
LLL has blondi and stirmi in right now.
Thanks!
@ahickin
Email address is found found directly on my channel page where the list is. I don't think you should have a big problem with ID'ing your T. Since I've seen yours is already adult, just look for those patella hairs I showed you around the 17:00 mark. If you got the hairs, it's a real blondi, otherwise it's a stirmi
Great video. Very informative 👍
@imbocca
They're generally easy to keep, just you have to watch out for the humidity levels.
@bornirish1
apophysis. I mention the 13'' legspan
@Mantisman630
if you keep them the way I do, it shouldn't pose too much of a problem. well started juveniles will do well
Have you mentioned their age, Jon? Still an awesome vid, whered you get the idea of making this "series"?
@Silweror
oh shoot, I knew I forgot something. Females 12-15 years, males 6-8, they take around 3-4 years to mature. People kept complaining that the earlier caresheet videos I made back in 2009 were outdated. So I decided to revamp them and more info.
@ahickin
you cannot accurately determine age unless you raised the specimen from a newborn slings. Ages are just estimates.
Lovely
@thegreatbasher
sorry about that... you're right they can grow different sizes. When I made this video, I wasn't considering the huntsman as a tarantula.
@imbocca
to be honest I rarely use that humidifier and I get good humidity in that tank
Not trying to play devil's advocate, and I know that you know more about T's than I do, but i fed my LP's & Genics , N Chromatus, & even B Vagans mice (which I breed for baby snakes), from time to time and never had a problem. I fed roaches most of the time, but also fed the mice often enough. They grew really fast.
Do T. apophysis get just as big? I don't recall if you mentionned it. It's a very pretty specimen with his pink hair, they remind me of Boots, my Avicularia sp. avicularia which is really gorgeous. Thank's PF
@ColoradoLizardDude
or better yet...you can find them the more expensive goliath horned worms...Those are incredibly fattening and it should fatten up in no time.
I love your videos! Do you own any snakes?
Which grows bigger a burgandi goliath bird eater or a king baboon
what good timing for this video. im happy with my apophysis, and i think mine is a female but idk. i have HD close ups if anyone wants to have a look.
Oh right mate see what u mean. Well hopefully he's younger than 6 years :-) how can u tell how old a tarantula is jon.
@ColoradoLizardDude
I'm not entirely sure if you're following my videos, especially the feeding videos...I primarily feed my T.stirmi superworms (as you recall roaches are illegal in Canada) and I got her fat within 1-2 months with 2 superworms once every 2 weeks. Feed them gut-loaded B.dubia roaches. Much healthier and nutritious than a mice. Mice are lose-lose situation. They can get seriously injured should the mouse attack, or impede their molt.
never been bitten before
sure u have figured this out but the cancerides should look kind of like a rose hair, and the pinkfoot should have be much darker with not as much hair on the abdomen and a more washed out brown color.
Well its scared of the prey or it's NOT hungry
@Jon3800 oh yeah, I remember you said you can't feed T's with feeder roaches in some of your last videos. Okay that's what I was thinking btw, maybe a waterdish and a shelter
@ColoradoLizardDude
You can if you want to...but MICE are the WORST diet you can give to ANY T, especially to a T.stirmi.. it's incredibly dangerous and if you keep feeding mice too often, they will die of a wet. Not sure if you knew this but Theraphosa species, due to shear size can and DO suffer from molting problems. Mice are rich in calcium, which only hardens up the exoskeleton...don't do it
As you've seen my specimen I primarily use superworms and
Ok thank u jon for your help mate :-) i was wondering because my blondi molted 4 weeks ago and she had gone a dark chocolate brown colour so just though she mite be a t burgandy.
@ultum4tegunz
Mice are still risks to Ts whether its captive bred or in the wild...
I know mate I'm gutted :-( but she still a beauitful tarantula :-D what leg span will she be when fully grown do u think jon.
the theraphosa blondi stirmi and apophysis
tarantula canada has them for sale right now
Have you ever been bitten by one of your species before? Or experienced anything like that?
@gow2626
yes we heard you.
Cool video, but do you have any pet cockroaches?
I am planning to get one, any advice?
all you do is call them up or send them an email with your order
@1991crunkmonk
TC has apophysis. 1 inch for $185
@AntiGravity909
for a wild caught or captive bred?
GOlaiths dont reach 12" in captivity often because wild food is more nutritious..its hard to give them the same diet in captivity.. I think.. however i could be wrong.. it is possible there is a larger species of T... undiscovered,. or lost due to habitat distruction. =(((
Ok thank u mate :-) I've had alook at my tarantula and she looks like a stirmi there's no hairs on her pentlla which is disappointing wanted her 2 be a blondi :-(
@crazymangonewild123
that is not true. My mature pair have shown skittishness to defensiveness
@ahickin
I made a video of her not too long ago, the 21st of January
all i have is the 30 and i believe in your video you said anything over 30 is not needed
Hey John there is a website called black water reptiles .com. They are selling the pink toe Goliath for only 84.99. Oh and all of there Ts are captive bread. I'm not sure if the ship to Canada. But check it out. Thanks again for the videos. I really enjoy them. Oh and I'm about to order mine about next week I will fill you in on how it is when I get it. Keep up the good work man.
Thought you said anything over 30 and plus that's all I have for now
Great job, Jon. You mentioned that Stirmi are biters & bad hair throwers. Worse so than Blondi? Also, how much more do people tend for pay for a "real" T Blondi vs Stirmi? Thanks.
Blondi usually sell for double at dealers. I haven't owned blondi myself to give you that info but they're about as equally bad hair kickers.
That's Great. Thanks, Jon. the hairs are one of the things (along with the humidity & the price) from owning a nice impressive female. Like you've mentioned, Mex Red Knees throw hair quite often , but their hair doesn't seem to bother me. But I hair that Theraphosa hair is the worst BY FAR, & that Pink Toe hair is the most irritating of the Goliaths. This would be of greater concern to me than their temparent or those one inch fangs. LOL
could you keep a four inch one on an almost sealed critter keeper?
@ultum4tegunz
It depends on the indivudual. Some do...some dont
Jon how do you keep the substrate so moist without bringing the onset of mites??
@MAZ0HYST
not much on this species. I'll be honest, I didn't even know it existed
what does it mean if you pet t get scared of a cicket and run to its hole ??
I've had two epic fails when i tried to keep blondis they were bought both bought around 3" in size
My first one only lived 3 years and i thought it was due to lack of humidity so i kept my second one around 80 degrees and around 80% humidity and it only lasted 4yrs.
Since these two died on me im scared to try another one because they were 199 each.
I never wore gloves when i disposed of them and totaly know what you mean about their hairs.
I have 9 Goliath Birdeaters, 4 of which are mature males, they all have tibial hooks....I'm confused.
I'm sorry, I misunderstood, I was confusing hooks for palpal bulbs lol.
tarantula canada is selling t. blondis right now
@blackhawk250
If this is going to make you feel better...yes my handwriting did suck in this video...I write a lot better than this but you're just heavily criticizing just 1 video out of 1467 total I made, and there was more than 200+ videos where I talked using the chalkboard. These videos are intended to be serious and that's the style I've adapted to these videos.
@Abomination5o2
they're almost very close in size, I've seen some get 12.5-13''
I know some of them may be a bit redundant just because not much has changed in the hobby since you made these videos, but do you think you would ever try and remake some of these mythbuster videos?
Sebastian, I will likely be making new entries to the mythbuster video series since I'll be continuing them quite soon in fact. If there's a drastic change in the hobby about a particular species I've done ...I probably would make a short take mythbuster video on it with reference to the original one. As for ones that were already done, I'd prefer leaving them as is because if I do current version, I'll be a repetition of the former one. For the blondi/stirmi/apophysis differences...I've actually bring it up quite frequently towards the end of the videos.
