The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e Is A Plug-In Hybrid SUV That Is The Best Of Both Worlds

- When you can't decide between a fully electric or gas powered vehicle, the plug-in hybrid is often the best compromise for most drivers and for 2024, BMW is making that choice easier with the latest version of the #BMWX5 with a upgraded #X5xDrive50e powertrain as the sweet spot in the lineup. The #BMWX5xDrive50e pairs a turbo I-6 gas engine with a powerful electric motor and a nearly 30 kWh battery pack to make nearly 500 HP and go almost 40 miles on a full charge. This latest #X5 also benefits from updated styling and the latest version of BMW's excellent iDrive 8 infotainment system.

BMW offers a near all-you-can-eat buffet of engine choices for the latest BMW X5. While there isn't a wrong choice for any of the powertrain, we finally got a chance to sample the PHEV model, which combines the excellent Turbo Inline 6-cylinder engine with a powerful electric motor. It is nearly as quick as the V8-powered M60i model, but gets significantly better MPG and almost 40 miles of EV only range. This might be the best compromise when you can't decide which engine to get!

Good to see Sofyan reviewing the same model of my car! I am enjoying ita lot. Some notes:
1. The big screen is something I thought I hate but end up getting used to it. No AC physical button is very annoying.
2. Some electronic sensor issue with the early production models. I had one but it is cleared out by update and dealer visit.
3. Power is more than adequate. Even EV mode in city is more than enough and you can get to 80 mph.
4. Sensafin (non leather) seat is very comfortable, comparable to leather seats.
5. It is a relatively less ugly BMW and it is a fantastic car (minus the look)
What’s the gas mileage like?
Loving my 50E. Getting about 52 miles electric range actually so love how BMW over delivers on range sometimes.
Yeah, I've heard most are getting 50 miles or more. The stated 40 miles is low, just like how BMW always undercuts their hp figures.
How do you like 480 horsepower?
It’s 483hp is pretty crazy isn’t it? I have the m sport pro.
What kind of range with spirited driving style? Like if you’re pushing it the odd time from a red light. I’m guessing 52 miles is babying it to see the most you could get? Cheers.
52 is probably average, not slow starts, but plenty of chances in rural city that slows down, down hill at times, and lots of efficient coasting as well. With really pushing it all the time, closer to 40-45.@@chrisassaff4544
I actually just found out that the passenger seat position can be stored in the cars memory too ….since you can control the passenger seat from the driver side by pressing the button that has the seat icon with the number 2….you just select that button…set the passenger seat position…then press set…and select one of two (you can set two different positions just like the driver side) …so while the passenger can’t recall the seat position from their side…the driver can…so in essence both seat have memory function.
You are the best narrator . Wonderful Review . Bravo . Best in Business !

Great review thanks!
The lack of physical buttons is annoying and I hate that manufacturers are getting rid of them and forcing us to use the touch screen. One problem with the screen and the car is barely functional. Especially down the road when the warranty is up. Long term this thing is scary.
Solution is X5 45e, all physical buttons 👌
Exactly. It’s a horrible way to cost cut being people interact so often with these buttons if the auto climate button ain’t cutting it.

We have the 45E and love it. The 50E upgrades make me want it but I can't justify it. I agree the BMW inline 6 is IMO, the best IC engine ever and why I bought the 45E despite a mediocre EV power, which the 50E corrects.

Have you done a review on the X3 yet?
I always look for his car reviews, pretty concise and well done. Great SAV from a company I know very well. I would love to own one. Working on it 😎👍
One of my favorite SUVs
X550e is simply best phev 5 seat SUV in luxury sector. I always use electric only for everyday, and hybrid only for weekend trips.
Biggest con is with 80k (limit for tax credit in 2023), we still cannot get heated seats along with active driving assist. I ended up taking active driving assist.
BMW is doing things right, I can soon see my self getting a hybrid as technology improves
Have you done a review on the X3 yet? If not, please do so. Thank you
The X5 is a great all-around vehicle!
How do you warm up the gasoline engine now that you have the electrical startup feature?
you don't. you drive on electricity as often as possible, because the cost is about 1/3 vs gas. Once the electric range depletes, likely only on road trips with a 40-50 mile range, the gas engine kicks on and warms up while driving.
I got the 2022 4xe Grand Cherokee Summit Reserve and I should have held out for this instead for the same price point. I thought 25 all electric range wouldn’t be too bad, but I found that number to be a little inflated even with regenerative braking.
anyone know why it doesn't come with 22 inch wheel option?
love mine. only thing is i wish the rear door handles had a touch sensor for door locking and unlocking. infotainment is buggy but they’ll fix that
That’s BMW cutting costs. Pre LCI had it
They don't have that? My 2012 had that. Crazy.
my 2023 X3 does.
Terrific SUV Sofyan.
That extra black below kidney grill is unnecessary. The good news is you can wrapped it to match the colour.
It’s optional. Just skip the M Sport Package.
Looks great! Love these hybrids, this is the way to go. 🔥
Less rear legroom because of the plug-in hybrid is a dealbreaker for me. Excellent review as usual.
1/2" lol.
Most women will tell you... nevermind@@mediocreman2
Love that they kept the sublime inline 6 with the hybrid. Strongly dislike the lack of physical climate temperature controls. Hope the fake electric noises are defeatable. This vehicle is nevertheless my favorite in the class.
The fake electric noise is required by regulation at lower speed, I guess
You needed to use launch control. People have gotten 0-60 in 4.3 secs with draggy.
Does this model come with a 3rd row seating option?
No 7 seat option in the hybrids
I still can't believe the RAV4 technically has the same or more cargo space behind the second row.
Trying to convince the wife we need this X5. Wish me luck.
Bought one a few months ago. I loved the car until it had a high voltage battery malfunction and spent months at dealership. I thought it was just me having a lemon but then I started doing research and learned that there are many others with same issues. I hope they can eventually fix some of the bugs in the car because I really did love it. BMW is buying it back. Now I need to try and find something different. 😢 maybe it is just first year issues that need to get hammered out.
So you bought it a few months ago and it also spent months at a dealership? The math isn't mathing...
The light came on when I drove off the lot. It stayed at dealership for about 8 weeks. I got it back and requested a refund. So literally the months I had it it was either in the shop or in the process for a refund.
Just a little correction, the B58 in this car is the new Gen 3 B58 which is still mostly direct injection but the most exciting upgrade for Gen 3 is the fact that it’s now supplemented by a port injection system too just like the RS3 engine!!
No more need for tuners to buy a port injection intake manifold, straight from the factory!! Burger Motorsports made 500whp on a 740i with no supporting mods, just a piggyback tune, B58 just gets better and better lol
it's a really nice car!
Has anyone driven both X5 50e and IX? If you do, can you share your opinion about what each car does like?
so if the battery is not charged the vehicle will only use the gas engine @ 308 HP correct?
no. 15% of the battery is always reserved so full system HP/Torque can be achieved. All PHEV's operate this way. So for example this battery pack is like 29kw, you only have access to like 25kw on electric only driving.
BMW cheapened up the LCI removing tons of options. Perfect example is when you tried to open the rear doors they removed comfort access touch points and need you need to click the remote now
What is the color of this model
how much is the hybrid battery replacement cost if i may ask
Depends on how many modules you want to replace. All BMW PHEV batteries are separated into smaller modules that can be replaced individually and it inotially keeps at least one of them as a reserve to prolong the battery life. Each module costs about $1700 including labour to replace.

Great video. Hoping you will be able to test the 2025 X3 new hybrid that is suppose to have more range and power. X5 seemed a little big when I tested recently, but it was beautiful inside and out! Likely will wait for the upcoming X3 hybrid.
Good point in fact for a vehicle of its size the back seat is terrible, new X3 will be much better option and all new
X3 to me isn't even close to comparable. Cheap and drives like an economy car

@@JohnSmith-me2wg same and same. I was spoiled w an X5m and had a loaner X3 at one point. Couldn't stand how cheap it felt.
But doesn't the X3 have less rear legroom? Or is the trunk the only difference in interior size?
I heard someone say that the engine sound inside is artificial speaker sound
Is BMW still charging monthly for access to Apple CarPlay?? BMW started doing that in 2019 models which is stupid since other car makers Audi, Mercedes, Lexus, and cheaper cars, do it for free.
Why is the interior not "symmetrical"? Weird angles around the center dashboard.
Not uncommon. Many cars pivot things more towards the driver. A perfectly symmetrical car would be something cheaply made.
I really wish they gave the 50e to the X6 as well! The GLE has the phev in coupe form, and same with the Cayenne.
Damn...at that price you don't even get real leather. Though It does look good.
These are amazing vehicles, but why are they removing features? Not only the stupid removal of buttons, but they removed options like heated/cooled cupholders and 4 zone climate control.

2024 BMW X5 xDrive 50e Hybrid M Sport Package!
Why is the Inline 6 turbo only producing around a lowly 300hp ? Shouldnt the 3L turbo producing like 400hp at least ? Is it because of the Hybrid system or is it because of the marketing need ?
That is if the inline 6 produce 400hp on its own, the total power will be close to a X5M which is what BMW will not want.
Very cool car. If only I had confidence in long term reliability of the phev system, I would buy it😢

As the range of Plug In hybrids goes up it makes full EVs irrelevant, you can commute on electric only , then when you go farther trips it's a regular ice car

Good review but was the presenter in a hurry? He talks so fast!
Not sure why reviewers are more focused on EV range or capacity, but 50e is clearly a performance oriented vehicle with 480 horsepower, not an ordinary hybrid vehicle for MPG or EV only range.
What medicine are you on dude… the main selling point of PHEV is EV range, if it is truly performance focused it would not be PHEV with 30 miles (the battery weight is too much). If you really want a performance X5 look at the V8 options
@@brianhammond9332 you have no idea what you're talking about dude. I own 50e and it surely is a performance oriented vehicle with good EV range as a bonus. Not a vehicle emphasize on the EV range. Why do you think BMW put 480 hp on this vehicle if MPG and range matters?

whats the name of the color?
If you watch the video, he tells you.
That screen looks very laggy and slow, is that just the video or is it really like that? I cant deal with a half second delay and 25 fps on something that controls the entire car.
45E has a range of closer to 70km or 44miles ,the new 50e has about 60 miles or 90km , the ease of use with the BUTTONS on the 45e is far safer and more efficient than touch screens, but it’s probably a cost saving measure much like the the lack of buttons to fold the rear seats down from the booth. Looks wise it’s splitting hairs, from a Tec perspective the 50e is better and the hybrid is probably the best on the market for the luxury market. It’s a mid life upgrade but it’s a considerable upgrade Tec wise and power wise, some really good value out there on 45e,s at the moment 24-36 months old, so if you are looking for a luxury suv hybrid look there, EV distances are not to dissimilar if to commute 20miles from home and interior design is probably better in the 45e from a user interface prospective, save the planet and your money and buy a 24-36 old 45e then wait for prices to fall on the 50e in 2 plus years and trade up ..😊
