Gnoggin, hosted by its creator Lockstin, is a show delving into the mysteries of Pokemon! (and other games sometimes too). Explaining everything there is to explain! Why is each Pokemon given the type it has? What are their origins? What is the lore of the Pokemon world and the design inspirations? And what does it all have to do with alchemy? Let's Go find out!
Suicune is water type due to the story behind the three legendary beasts, which are cats (Entei is a lion, Raikou a tiger and Suicune a leopard) Raikou represents the lightning bolt that struck the tower, Entei represents the flames that engulfed the tower and Suicune represents the rain that put it out
Also Suicune can purify any pool of water... and it could be that it also follows the theory tht the three pokemon who died were Flareon, Jolteon and Vaporeon as the dog trio share the same typing as the OG eeveeloutions. also based on the logic hes using then wouldn't he insist Celesteela (who hes covered twice) be a grass type? Celesteela learns more grass moves than Steel/flying... yet hes ok pointing out its based on a myth... Hmmmm….
they're dogs you know
Wow, I never made the connection.
Also, "Sui" means water in chinese, so it has water in his name, literally
They are more cats then dogs but people call them legendary dogs.
If I recall correctly, the reason of Suicune's typing (and the other two beasts) is due to the Burnt Tower legend, thats says that three pokemon died when the Brass tower suddenly started burning, then was strucked by a lightning and then it was put down by a mysterious downpour, Ho-oh then gave life again to those three pokemon and gave them legendary powers based on the fire, lightning, and rain that the tower went through.
So, lore wise it makes sense that Suicune is Water type.
A theory I've heard of is that the three unnamed Pokémon that perished in the blaze were a Flareon, Jolteon, and Vaporeon.
yes, its good lore, but his design and description resembles ice too much
@@Chaos89P Look more like Zygarde 10%. And Dogs...
Besides the "Sui" in Suicune's name comes from the Chinese word for water and its the mascot of crystal version, with crystals being hydrated minerals
@DeathBoo
The legend says the Tower was struck by Lightning (thus Raikou's the oldest of the trio), set Aflame (thus Entei being the second Ho-oh created), and the fire was put out by the purifying rain, (thus Suicune being the last of the three, and its ability to purify any water it touches).
When I was younger I thought Feebas looked like a microwaved version of Magikarp so, I thought you could get Feebas by having Magikarp on your team with 5 fire Pokémon so it could get dried up...
Yeah I’m stupid
Flamingo_Hue BIG BRAIN
That's genuinely cute
Hmmm... That was GENIUS!

Sad sad sad
Oh god
"Suicune shouldn't be water type!!!" he says, neglecting to mention its entire in canon backstory about how it was resurrected and given the water type to represent the rain that doused the fire that killed it.
Also the theory that the trio are basically supernatural forms of the original 3 eeveelutions
Yeah, you have to work from the assumption that it's water type for a reason and find out why rather than looking at it and guessing its type then saying "well that can't be right" when you find out you're wrong. There's obvious reasons for it to be water type, even if taken on its own ice would be more obvious.
thank you, i was so triggered with the Suicune part of the video.
I was looking to see if anyone else mentioned this, I would have done otherwise (I ain't no copycat)
Actual factual
What mostly upsets me about all of this...
No, not Remoraid being a gun.
No, not Feebas looking like a corpse of a Magikarp.
No, not the fact that, in Pokémon GO's Tentacool's Pokédex entry says that it dries up on land.
Gorebyss' shell-bra.
Why does it need a bara?! It's an eel!
Have you seen Arcanine‘s dex-entry? It can walk up to 10.000 km per day. Let it hatch the eggs!
Isn’t Palkia a water type because the trio is supposed to represent the 3 states of matter where Dialga is solid, Palkia is liquid, and Giratina is Gas
That actually makes a lot of sense
To me Palkia is Water type because of the common cultural myth of the Primordial Waters being the beginning of the Universe (and consequently Space). Dialga is Steel because the rusting of metal represents the flow of time?... Giratina is Ghost because he's basically the Lord of the Underworld.
I never thought of that but it's supossed to be, Diagla is the keeper of Time. Giratina is the keeper of the Underworld. Palkia is the keeper of Space.
Ava well you’re also right. It’s just how you interpret the double meaning.
I love Gen 4, I swear the stuff in Sinnoh is representative of so many things other than what you see on the surface. That's pretty cool, I actually never knew this.
Lockstin: Vaporeon is the most “literally water” water type
Rainy form Castform: I guess I’m not a thing then
Normal castform, and rainy form: I DONT EXIST!
Same with Jellicent.
just normal cast form is supposed to be a water molecule
That's what i guessed
Helm and dex entry: it's body is mostly seawater
Vaporion: *turns to water

Gongrats vaporion transformed in glaceon

Wait, their eyes are white? This whole time I just thought their eyes have been closed cause they are happy or something
Me too
Same
When you picture the top and bottom of their eyes different you can see it
now they look creepy
Their 3d models in later games show they blink where the curved line in the middle of the eye flattens, so I think its light closed, but still 'blinks' but forcing them tightly shut
Giratina, Dialga and Palkia represent solid, liquid, and gas. Giratina being dragon ghost ( *gas* ), Dialga being dragon steel ( *solid* ) and Palkia being dragon water ( *liquid* ).
Giratina is actually anti-matter
@@meme_aids they represent multiple things. Space, time, and anitmatter, but also liquid, solid, and gas.
Ecos Adventurer They never say antimatter in the Games or Anime, or by Gamefreak, that’s just speculation. Gravity seems to be a better explanation for it and it’s destructive nature. It flies without using air magic, and it’s spectral wings shouldn’t be able to fly in the real world, so the ability to control gravity would explain this away, and the distortion world plays with gravity by making water flow “up” and have floating chunks of land. Gravity can also be very destructive, so banishing it makes sense. Obviously that’s also speculation, but this is just to say to not spout out speculation as fact.
@@sylvereon No. Im Pretty sure its Gravity. When Matter and Antimatter touch. They are anihilated.
If Giratina Touched our world.
She/he Would Die along with the World.
*ALSO* Gravity can Distort Time and Space. So Y E A H
@@Mattno.777 I didn’t say it wasn’t. If you read my point you would have seen many arguments for Gravity. All I’m saying is both of those are speculation, because there is no confirmation of any of the two.
I love how they recently rediscovered coelacanths, like we really thought they were extinct, they literally have armour and are cool
I always thought as kid that Palkia is water because the whole space/god theme of sinnoh legends. Dialga represents a solid (steel), Palkia represents liquid (water) and Giratina represents gasses (ghost).
Palkia - Liquid
Dialga - Solid
Giratina - Gas
Suicune is water because of the 3 legendary beasts Johto legend, theres some story about thunderbolt that struck a tower, a fire that broke out and then rain that put out the fire. Hence Entei, Raiku, suicune, when ho-oh revived them and gave them their powers based on what went down at that temple place thing.
What does the space/god theme have to do with solids liquids and gases
A bit late dont you think
Uncle Fungus
It’s because the universe is said to be made up of these three forms of matter. HOWEVER, that is not actually true, as plasma is the fourth form of matter and is in fact what 99% of our universe is ACTUALLY made of.
....fun fact.
Pretty sure arcues is plasma BUT girtina isn't gas its ACCTULLY anti-matter
Well I know this probably won't get a response, but Palkia might be loosely based off an old Egyptian primordial deity named Nun, who is believed today to be the Ancient Egyptians interpretation of Space. Which even more convincingly, the Ancient Egyptians thought the night sky was in fact a great ocean, that would certainly explain the water type.
Also fun fact, that deity Nun was in fact Ra's father, who was the sun god and head honcho of the Egyptian Pantheon.

Sir, I applaud you for your pronunciation of the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a. I am from Hawaii, and I approve of your effort. 🤙🏼
19:23 That's the English translator's fault for categorizing Blastoise that. In Japan, it's referred to as the Shell Pokemon alongside Kabutops, but the English category refers them as the Shellfish Pokemon.
They do commonly change categories in the localization with multiple Pokemon like Flygon and Xatu (Spirit Pokemon to Mystic Pokemon which still makes sense for Xatu and Flygon... sort of) alongside Chimchar and Grookey (Small Monkey Pokemon to the Chimp Pokemon, but it makes sense for Chimchar)
I’m pretty sure that Clauncher and Clawitzer are also based on the pistol shrimp.
I dont think the pistol shrimp shoots water, I've heard that it closes its pincer so hard that the bubbles instantly pop and cause major damage
Yeah, but does that not sound like a water type Pokémon idea for you. I mean its a Pokémon...take Araquanid for example. It is essentially the Diving Bell Spider in reverse(it makes water bubbles to stay on land while the real thing makes air bubbles) So it would not be to crazy to believe that instead of shooting bubbles(essentially pockets of air) they made it shoot water instead. Plus pistol shrimps do have one claw that is bigger(like Lockstin mentioned in the video) than the other and the claw can noticeable like "cock back" when getting ready to fire. Also Pistol Shrimp is a crustacean named after a gun just like Clawncher is. Similar to how Octillary is an octopus with tank/artillery traits or Remoraid is based on an archer fish.
@@c.q.cumber5870 Bubble is a water type move. 👀
That would make sense considering their names, especially with Clawitzer clearly being a play on words of howitzer.

As a kid I always assumed Suicune was Ice type _because_ that'd make the legendary beasts land versions of the legendary birds of the previous generation. It was also the version mascot for Pokemon Crystal Version, y'know, ice crystals being water when it's in crystal form.
Then when I learned it was Water type I realize it's basically a super Vaporeon, Entei is a super Flareon, and Raikou is a super Jolteon. Which was also a popular fan theory at the time.
really vaporeon is made of water the ultimate water type
suicine is in the shouldnt category

pegasBaO23 look at the other two Pan/Simi monkeys, specifically their eyes. They have oval shaped eyes with oval pupils, you can see the whites of their eyes around the pupil. If Panpour/Simipour really have white pupils, they take up way more space in the eye oval than the other two - they wouldn’t match the other Pokémon. Also, check Bulbapedia, it confirms that their eyes are closed.

Good Video but a few mistakes that even I noticed on the first watch. Mostly Palkia and Suicune. Palkia is the liquid state of matter and Suicune is the rain that put out the fire from the thunderbolt. I think there was like a Pokemon Video on it when they did the whole important story bits in that Pokemon Origins animation. Also, its name means water. And if we're being correct the Aurora Borealis is like more electric then ice.

About palkia, you are right, but you could just have made palkia the time one, or just the steel one, and it would make more sense, since after all time flows, space seems much more solid than time and Giratina is perfect as it is.
@@AliceIsSleepy Space is about as unexplored as the ocean beneath us. And as for time yes it flows but it's also more structured then space. Time doesn't change because time isn't real. It's something we as a species made up.

Primarina is mostly inspired by the mythical creatures called Selkies; they take a seal-like form in the water that they can shed to become human-like on land. Just a little tidbit I thought should be included.
Most I've watched always miss that. They always mention Sirens and Mermaids. I can see how some would draw comparisons to Mermaids, since Primarina's lower body and tail are similar in theme and design, but I can't understand the Siren comparison. I remember Sirens having the body of a bird and the head of a woman.
I agree, Primarina is largely based off of Selkies. There might also be a little Mermaid inspiration, although that seems to be more of an aesthetic choice to style it up a bit.
@@Nekosage Sirens could be classified as a type of mermaid; they're the ones that are known for luring sailors to crash their ships into rocks with their voices and songs, and I have read somewhere that selkies are also known for their singing as well; that's why Primarina's main/most well known attacks are all based off of singing. I believe the creatures you're thinking about with the body of a bird and the head of a woman are harpies; a staple in Greek mythology.
@@emilyfrost3506
The first versions of Sirens that I legitimately remember seeing have the body of a bird and the head of a woman. That's how early Greek art depicted them:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siren_(mythology)
Here's the one on harpies:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harpy
Yes, the two are somewhat similar in form, but different in action. Sirens stayed around rocky areas of the sea to lure ships to crash into them, that is true. Harpies are known for snatching and eating people.
I remember Gaijin Goomba bringing up Selkies singing(and used the movie "Song of the Sea" as one of the examples) in his Primarina video.
"Selkies and the Endless Obsession" from Between the Buried and Me. You're welcome :)

@OffBrandAnon Because Giratina has the ability to turn his body into a black misty shadow like substance. And trying to punch a shadow in the face will be about as effective as trying to punch gas in the face.
@OffBrandAnon that's why I said main forms, I'm aware that plasma is also a state of matter but it isn't as common as the others.
I believe Palkia’s water type isn’t because it has an aquatic element, but it’s metaphorical like in typical mythology. Dalgia, Giratina, and Palkia supposed to represent 3 states of matter Solid (steel) liquid (water) and Gas (ghost)
There's actually another reason behind the typings of the entire Creation Trio. Their typings are a reference to the three main forms of matter.
- Dialga represents solids, explaining the Steel type.
- Palkia represents liquids, hence the Water type.
- Giratina represents gas, which is why it's Ghost type.
wow didnt know that

So 2 things. I understand I'm late and its likely that these have already been commented but whatever.
1: "Coleocanth" is actually "Coelacanth" to my understanding, that is how I've always heard it and thats how I've always believed it to be.
2: The Blue Whale is actually NOT the largest THING to have ever lived, just the largest animal. The Armillaria ostoyae
is a fungus which basically reproduces / clones itself several times over and over again to fit the mass of more than 7 blue whales. There is also a TREE which basically clones itself, called "Pando". It uses it's roots to sprout new trees up in different areas. Both of these being actually bigger than the blue whale itself.
*But wailord should be way bigger than it is*
King Sharky imagine open Wailord’s pokeball in a house by accident or something
I think that Palkia being a water type is a reference to how ancient human civilizations such as Egypt thought that space was water and that the world was created from a bunch of water. It's also interesting how in Hebrew cosmology that the firmament is what separates the waters of space from the Earth and that Yahweh separated the waters from the waters to form the Earth. There also was a Greek philosopher named Thales who not only believed that the Earth was sitting in a vast ocean of water, but also that all material things could be broken down to being made of water. It seems that this typing makes more sense with that history in mind and how people have associated space/matter with water. (Edit) Man, I was not expecting to get some thumbs up for pointing out a small thing!
I think it's a reference to the liquid state of matter. Dialga is steel, for solid, and Giratina is ghost, for gas.
@@OriginalGameteer *steel for solid and yeah thats way, and its a stupid reason. Space and time isnt matter. They should have had specific legendaries for the states of matter :/
I thought Palkia was water type because of how astronauts train underwater to simulate zero-gravity conditions
Hydrogen is _very_ abundant in space and oxygen is created through stellar nuclear fusion.
@@OriginalGameteer Giratina is based off of Gas, not air. Even then it still should've been a Poison type.

Wait, that's the same thing, nevermind.
Brock gets around just fine with no eyes lol
I remember hearing that the Egyptians thought that the night sky (space) was actually a huge sea...maybe that's the water type explanation for Palkia?
You know that makes sense
I think that the Gol- suffix used for both Golduck and Golbat is derived from ghoul, not gold. It makes much more sense as in both cases, its earlier for changes from a vaguely cute-ish if dorky-looking animal into something a bit more unsettling and monstrous.
Also, I imagine the SpongeBob style suits being spelled "SCOOWBA" - Self Contained Out Of Water Breathing Apparatus.
Alligators release heat through there mouths? How don't we have a fire crocodile yet?
would be interesting. we have crocodile pokemon that live in the desert, and crocodiles/alligators are not far from salamanders, which are commonly associated with fire. a fire crocodile seems like an obvious choice for gen 8
Wouldn't having a fire-breathing (or just fire associated) reptile just make people question why it isn't a dragon, like that one other fire-breathing reptile that people questioned its non-dragon status for years?
Which leads to the question as to why there are so few dragon/fire types. Because one is a legendary (Resharim), one is a mega (Charizard X), and one is a tortoise (Turtonator).
Let's see. We have a water type croc/gator and we have a ... dark... ground... gator? So why not a fire gator?
@@Necrikus unless there's a croc dragon I don't think so
It's because fire breathing dragons arent common in the Japanese mythos that's a western thing. The two closest in style to a western dragon are charizard (not a dragon except its mega) and dragonite.
The most likely reason why Suicune is water and not ice is the whole Vaporeon theory but yes it is definitely more icy than watery
Yes Vaporeon IS water

Amphibnians.
It's fine, we all make spelling mistakes sometimes.
Honestly I always felt like Raikou holds the other two beasts back. To explain, Entei is associated with Volcanoes, which to me would indicate a Fire/Ground typing, while Suicine is meant to be Water/Ice due to its ability to purify any water it touches and its strong association with the north wind.
Then you have Raikou off in the corner sniffing glue with its only logical typing being Mono-Electric. Though I could see it possibly being Electric/Normal with an emphasis on Sound attacks(Its Pokedex mentions its Bark being like a thunder-strike, and most sound based moves are Normal) and STAB Extremespeed(the Pokedex references it as being extremely fast) added to its movelist to represent both Lightning and Thunder. That said Electric/Normal is still a stretch given that Normal typically means something is plain, or is "we don't know what the heck type to give this".
Maybe Raikou could be electric/flying. It doesn't have wings but it could easily be remained as part flying. It can be the beast of storms with the air magic of winds and clouds with the electric magic of lightning. Tornadus, Thundrus and Landerous are all flying, and all have clouds instead of wings. Tornadus is even a rare case of a pure flying type. Raiku has fluff on its back, that resembles a storm cloud. So it could work as part flying. Then all legendary beasts have dual types.
Actually Primarina is a Welsh siren known as a Selkie.
arent Selkies the seal-ish people who can remove their fur to become human????
Yep. But they can only go on land without the seal bit for about a year.
Also most sirens are actually bird women from Greek mythos, they are not normally mermaids.... but we just call Mermaids sirens cause why not...
@@rontheauraknight9606 Sirens were initially bird hoes but artists found that that didn't make much sense insofar as their association with water and ships, so they just started depicting them as merfolk instead
Actually, the Celtic mythos labels such beings as merfolk, but all are considered faerie folk.
I've heard that castform is supposed to be a water molecule. The head part would be the oxygen atom while it's lower half would be the smaller hydrogen atoms
Vaporeron? Really!? I never would have guessed that! The only thing I could come up with was Castform Rainy. The more you know, I guess.
Lucas Soares Vaporeon actually turns into water on the show. In the first series.
I knew about Vaporeon, but Frillish/Jellicent was also a Pokémon I'd considered for the most watery water type. After all, half of Jellicent's Pokédex entries state that "Its body is mostly seawater."

I'm a little disappointed you didn't talk about how clauncher and clawitzer's inspiration the pistol shrimp (or snapping shrimp) is capable of essentially shooting a shock wave from its claw that is almost as hot as the sun for a fraction of a second and is capable of breaking glass. Allowing it to inflict massive damage on its prey. That's basically a real life pokemon, my guy.
The pistol shrimp can't break glass. That's a myth.

All these water type pokemon and Game Freak still hasn't made a dolphin pokemon. (If you don't count Kyogre since it's an orca which is in the dolphin family)
I don't it's more of a whale than a dolfin in it's design.
We also still need a common fly Pokemon, and a Griffin.

Palkia is water type because Giratina, Dialga and Palkia all represent 3 forms of matter. Giratina is represents gases so it's Ghost type, Dialga represents solids so it's Steel type, Palkia represents liquids so it's Water type...... Though to be fair they could have made Palkia's design fit better with its typing
It could also reference to real world creation myths like in the book of genesis.
I always figured palkia being water type was a reference to Mesopotamian Tiamat
Palkia is also Water type because of Space. There is a lot of Water-Ice in Space; like a lot. Also Palkia, Dialga, Giratina and Arceus are literally Pokémon Gods, and Palkia, Dialga, and Giratina are physical representations of Space, Time, and Dimension.
Giratina sounds like she should've been a poison type instead of a ghost.
I don't know if Lockstin reads comments, but if you're wondering why rotom has water 24:02, it's because it's been mentioned a few times already that Water Type moves are not real water. You can't sate your thirst in a desert with their water. That water also doesn't go into the water cycle. Rotom-W is most likely just conjuring temporary faux-water.
A lot of Pokemon powers are straight up magic, and recent games have been pushing the narrative that typed energy is powered by lifeforce.
Fun fact about the Marill line. They're the only Pikachu clones that aren't single stage or electric.

When the bronze Tower was burned down in generation 2, the legendary Pokemon Ho-Oh came down after the Flames were put out by the rain and resurrected the three Pokemon that died, granting them the powers of the Thunder that struck the tower, the fire that burned it down and the rain that put it out, that is why suicune is a water type
I'm really hoping they see this comment. I got so aggravated at the end of the video when he was talking bout suicune
Honestly, I thought he would mention this, but it seems like he didn't do all his research.
I think that Suicune may be only a water type because of that myth/theory that says that the legendary beast are the revived/reincarnated versions of the three pokemon that died in the Burned Tower and that were brought back to life by Ho-oh. Supposedly, the three eeveelutions (vaporeon, flareon and jolteon). Which would explain why Suicune, despite all the ice related inspirations is a water type pokemon.
I thought the reason Palkia was Water was to fit a theme of matter with the Sinnoh Legend Chad trio. Steel -> Solid, Water -> Liquid, and Ghost -> Gas,
OffBrandAnon nah

About Squirtle, Wartortle and Blastoise:
Tortoises are not just related to turtles, they *are* turtles. Also, the easiest way to tell a tortoise from a not-tortoise is in the way they walk. Tortoises walk on their toes, while non-tortises walk flat footed. All this to say, all tortoises are turtles, not all turtles are tortoises, and the squirtle line are turtles, but not tortoises.
@ythrom. Kids these days, with their me-mes.
@ythrom. That's not a boomer, that's a well-informed person!
How does a tortoise not walk flat footed? I mean I imagine their feet like an elephant, and there very heavy I think
The actual division of turtles is between side necked turtles and straight necked turtles. Both of them are aquatic in nature, and so are full blown turtles. The straight necked turtles has plenty of regular freshwater turtles. It also has soft shell turtles and sea turtles. Interestingly enough this group also has tortoises. In a way tortoises and sea turtles are opposites in having extremes of different life styles. Sea turtles are aquatic to the extreme, while tortoises are terrestrial to the extreme. Lifestyle is the one main thing that makes tortoises different from regular turtles.. That is some neat divergent evolution there.. Tortoises don't form thier own major group, in the way people may think they do. It is just that the turtles formed a bunch of thier own little offshoots, and one of them became tortoises. So tortoises are turtles, because they evolved from turtles. They form a natural group. The technical term for such a group is a clade. Not all turtles are tortoises, but all tortoises are definitely turtles. The Squirtle line is obviously a turtle. I won't even call them tortoises just based on water type alone. The Archen line is definitely a turtles. This is partially due to the water typing and partially because of the clear sea turtle look. Pokemon already has good tortoise representation as there are those that don't have the water type. These are more terrestrial ones, that look like tortoises.. Torkoal is one, due to the fire typing. The turtwig line is another, even though there is ankylosaur mixed in. There is grass and ground.
This series is always interesting and fun. Thank you so much for continuing
