    Greetings from No. VT - I am retired from 38 years in healthcare. Some of the most horrendous injuries coming into ERs are chain saw accidents. We got a lot of those injuries in this region. You are 100% right on telling people to pay attention to using power saw chaps when they are cutting. Your boy's statement about not being in a hospital with a power saw cut is a lot cooler than looking cool cutting in jeans or shorts is right on! Sending along positive energy - hope the situation with your grandmother is improving!

    I really appreciate this video, Buckin. Just last weekend I had a close call. Was wearing winter bibs. Paying attention to my surroundings and not the saw until the chain nipped my knee. Just a stand up job all the around. Glad to be here. A clean up tip I learned ages ago from an oldtimer is to lay a couple loops of old rope down in the bed, then stack brush on top of the rope. Running Bow after all is stacked and done. Tie rope to something at dump sight and drive away. Works a treat.

    110% agree with you on chaps, I grew up with a chainsaw in my hands and it wasn't until my first summer with the National Park Service cutting trails that I learned that everything I'd been doing since I was 12-13 was DEAD wrong. 3 things that MUST be worn anytime you run saws are your chaps, hearing pro, and a hardhat. Carrying a personal tourniquet and knowing how to use it should be mandatory. I recommend everyone who runs saws and enjoys their quality of life, swallow some pride and humbly allow yourself to learn something new. Do it for your family and loved ones if not for yourself. Take care of yourself friends!

    You're right, Buckin'! I've got chaps that I rarely wear. Just last week, with the saw gettin' down close to idle, it dropped down by my leg and the chain caught my jeans. Tore 'em up, but didn't scratch my leg. I should know better, but I just didn't feel like wearin' the chaps. I've done stupid things my whole life... most times I got away with it, sometimes not. Therein lies the problem... MOST times, I got away with it.

    Nice job...love how thorough you guys are with your work, small details that a customer doesn't expect to be done goes a LONG ways.
    And great advice on the PPE... when I'm cutting firewood I always wear my chaps, hard hat/screen/muffs, and chainsaw cut resistant boots....I don't run big saws/bars, Stihl MS230 and a Husky 445 but a sharp chain whipping around will mess you up regardless of what's pulling it. You would laugh at the size of Balsam Fir, Spruce, Larch, and Birch we have here in Newfoundland that we harvest for firewood..tiny in comparison to what you guys cut on the West Coast, but I have picked up a lot of great falling tips from you that I apply to my own firewood harvesting!

    Another greeting from VT - I wanted to give you a specific thank you. (Sorry it is a little long but I want to give you credit in front of the community for your excellent teaching). I had an old single bit "Yankee" axe I had picked up a while back which I de-rusted and gave some love. Nothing special, but it was a nice heavy almost 4 lb "Yankee" head with a really sweet profile for both cutting and splitting; but I kept putting off doing the handle replacement. When I picked it up it had a skinny 24" busted handle and all along I kept sawing to myself that it just didn't feel right to put a short handle back on. You posted a really detailed axe rehab video a few days back that prompted me to go back an look at several of your earlier axe re-handling videos. I picked up quite a few tricks since I don't do these very often. The main thing that stuck with me was your argument with yourself about a short versus long handle and how you kept saying that the skinny and short handle just didn't feel right. I had a longer hickory handle laying around the shop but it just didn't "feel right. I started looking around everywhere I went that sold handles but kept looking because when I picked them up they just didn't feel right . I happened to be at Home Depot a few days back. On a hunch I started digging through their display of replacement handles. As I was going through the 15 or so they had on hand, ;one just felt right when I picked it up. It was a 34" brute of a hickory handle. It just felt right in my hands so I took it home. I stripped off the commercial varnish, sanded down the handle, improved the curves a little, then used your approach to seat the head. About a dozen (or two) adjustments later I was just as excited as you get on your videos. It just slipped on with the barest hit of a curl just above the shoulder curve. I didn't like the wooden wedge that they had with it and I didn't want to use a metal wedge so I made a red oak wedge on the band saw and again used the approach you used fitting the groove and wedge dimension, then glued and pounded it it. I did a very light burn on the handle because I really liked the native grain and didn't want to make it too dark. After a quick 180 grit sandpaper rub down the Watco Danish Oil was liberally applied and now I have this incredible looking and lethal axe. My wife is even impressed. After seating and trimming I have 31" from bottom of head to the top of the knuckle handle. It goes through 16" oak and rounds like butter due to the benefit of the longer handle with a relatively heavy head. Everything you said in your video about using the physics resonated. I feel like I had a master class in axes watching the dozen or so videos you have done focusing on rehabbing axes. The result is an amazing axe that is a worker (not a wall hanger even though the handle is gorgeous). It was a great project so I think I will keep my eyes open for some new candidates and pass them along to deserving woodmen like you do! Thank you for the effort and detail you put into your videos.

    • @richardbonner2354
      @richardbonner2354 4 роки тому

      Michael Nix. You DID attend the Masters's Class, watching Buckin' put his Care and attention into every 'step' of fitting his axe heads and handles. And then..., this is the part I like! - You became 'the master'. Ya put Life into that piece o' hick'ry. And Beauty. I like how you "didn't settle" for the 'store bought' finishes, wooden wedge, and factory-spit steel wedge. (When you 'want' a steel wedge - when the axe and handle say "I need one" - you can create a perfect one on your bench.)
      The inner child in me likes to imagine an ol' axe head sayin' "Thanks fer puttin' me back ta work...; I hated bein' "laid aside" an' "layed off". Let's chop some WOOD, Boss!"

    • @OldVermontGuy
      @OldVermontGuy 4 роки тому

      @@richardbonner2354 Thank you Richard. My wife definitely thinks I am a little (actually probably a lot) touched in the head when I was telling her about the axe project. Something about that Buckin video just hit a chord that made me think about doing this axe differently. Going back and looking at some of the earlier axe rehab videos, especially the one when he did the Black Raven by Kelly inspired me to slow down, take my time, and look around. for the right handle. I never expected a piece of wood, especially from the Home Depot garden shop replacement handle bin, to feel unique as I was picking up each one and holding them in a two hand grip..You may laugh at this but there is a line in the first Harry Potter story about how the wand chooses the wizard not the wizard picking the wand. That is very much what feels like happened. Maybe it was just watching and listening to Buckin as he argued with himself in that video that opened me up to thinking differently this time. This isn't an heirloom tool, just a good old working tool that I needed to fix up because I need an axe at a new house we have over in New Hampshire and I am picking up what I need to equip that house piecemeal as items present themselves so I am not hauling tools back and forth from our Vermont place. Thanks for the encouragement and helping me feel like I am not crazy (or at least there are some other similar crazy people out there)!

    Hey my friend. Bet it felt good to get out and run some power saws. And not have crappy deadly weather! Best times of your life working with your boy. Much love as always.

    Your 💯 % right,! So listen to these words of wisdom cause I’ve been there with trees kicking back my saw and slamming through my boots and I’ve had friends to get there legs as well,! So be careful in running power saws, new comers ,!! The saw rips the flesh open it don’t cut like a knife so be careful,!

    Love your bonsi pine. Keeps a new design along the fence and still hanging some privacy. I bought a small 12" dewalt chainsaw battery operated for small brush cutting. Does a great job. I bought safety glasses, helmet ear muffs but not chaps. Do I really need them with this small chainsaw? Love your show, been watching you for a long time. Keep loving!

    My grandmother was born in 1915.
    She always used that exact same set of hand pruners.
    All thru the 1980's.
    She loved them!!

    That pine did look good buckin. I have chaps i wear havent gotten me any pants yet, but i will soon. There alot more comfortable then the chaps. But i still wear the chaps, i'm not trying to be pushed around in a wheel chair or worse. Good video!

    Enjoyed the speech about chainsaw trousers. A mate that works with me is always using saws in shorts or normal trousers just tempting a nasty accident. I’m now slightly paranoid that the one time I don’t wear them will be accident time which is a good thing so I always have them on. Decided a long time ago I need my limbs and don’t like spending time in hospitals.

    Do you keep the spring and latch on the bottom of your 1920s pruner oiled?
    I do on mine and it still works fine.

    You guys are class. What a job. That was quality service there and all you had to do was apply your brain to the job and show a bit of kindness along the way.
    Great PPE chat too, I'm guilty too. Saying to myself it'll just be a 5 minute job... I'd suggest get some chainsaw boots too if you are ground working or bucking. My chainsaw teacher and mentor of 25 years back is still running a saw now in his 80s, about 5 years ago he put the bar tip through the top of his boot. There's a lot if stuff in the top of your foot that you need to run, climb etc. He limps about okay now but a young man would have been very seriously limited by that.
    Stay safe!

    Thanks for the PSA on the chainsaw chaps/ pants. I too have been lazy about wearing them and I shouldnt. As you said, might not look cool or be the most comfortable thing but lots better than ending up in the hospital or dead. Just look at how fast the saws go through wood, we are much squishier than wood.
