As an Englishman, I'm always flattered when ensembles from countries with a much richer seventeenth-century baroque musical culture than mine turn their attention to Purcell. This was a great production, many, many thanks - such a pity that the times we live in meant that the applause the performance so richly deserved could not be forthcoming - but the end was managed with dignity laced (I think) with an appropriate amount of good humour. Greetings and best wishes from the wintry Vale of York.
It's not flattery. Purcell is one of the greatest of all Baroque composers.
Purcell is one of the best in general. The best in English musical history in my opinion. The only other English composers that come close to Purcell's excellence are Gustav Holst and Elgar.
@@bigl5343 I find it difficult to compare the greatness of composers across eras. For example William Byrd was a great English composer of the Renaissance and I don't know how to compare his brilliance with Purcell. Anyway, I love Purcell's music and he is my favourite composer of all time.
@@Paul.Morgan I get what you are saying. It is my personal bias to arbitrarily declare a best composer. Speaking of renaissance English composers, have you listened to John Taverner?
@@bigl5343 John Taverner born 1944? I haven't heard his music but I'll check it out thanks.
What a beautiful perfomance!! I am very touched!! Beautiful music. What a sadness the lack of applause, from the depth of my heart I send mine.
This is the first time I have seen & heard this opera, every single person involved in this production have reached stellar heights, an absolute tour de force, I thank you all for making an old man happy.
I had the pleasure to see this opera live at the university I studied at. It was the last well-funded productions as the main benefactor left the university after that year. A true shame. The student opera was used to premeire the best of the vocalist undergrads as well as alumni that had gone on to join the Metropolitan or the Santa Fe opera company.
An amazing performance, beautifully sung. And the silent bows at the end were very moving.
The "curtain" took me quite by surprise and hit me hard in the stomach.
Jewels from Purcell.
The silent at the end really broke my heart!!!! so sad!!! couldnt the orchestra perhaps make some noise? but I guess they had a point!! congratulations to all of you!!!
Agghiaccianti gli applausi finali... spettacolo bellissimo
Loved it ❤
Stupendo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
E triste, ma bellisimo.Grazie.
Wonderful production, singing and playing. Thank you
Torneremo ad applaudire grazie!!!!!!
Thank you so much for uploading this!! And a huge thank you to the people who made this happen!!
P.S. There was very long applause on my part in the end!!❤
A very impressive production. Thank you very much.
BELLISSIMO! Applausi da casa! Anche al bravissimo coro ...
Great performance - staging, singing, acting! The only missing part was grand applause, they truly deserve. Let's hope they will get a chance to stage it to live audience, to much applause. Thanks, TEATRO COMUNALE LUCIANO PAVAROTTI MODENA
Che meraviglia, bravissimi! Grazie, grazie, grazie!
An absolutely stunning production. Brava!! Thank you!!
THANK YOU for doing a production at 440!!!
Thank you, Opera Streaming, for this and all your other uploads - especially last month's excellent Traviata.
Bellissimo, grazie di cuore.
Personalmente me gustó muchísimo, mucho talento vocal, puesta en escena, orquesta. Es todo lo que me gusta ❤❤❤
Grazie bellissimo 👏👏👏
Bellissima!!!!!!!!! Grazie!
Ottimo lavoro, complimenti a tutti
BRAVISSIMI:
Meraviglioso!!!! Esecuzione splendida. Sto piangendo tantissimo. Gli ultimi minuti sono veramente commoventi.
Grazie!
It's nice Modena is still doing opera while La Scala is in lockdown.
Great!!
Ooooo absolutely wonderful! I gasped at the "Cupid only throws the dart" - lovely playing and singing! Thank you!
Amazing performance! Congratulations to all singers and musicians. Just know that I am virtually sending my applause to all of you at the very end. Very nice set design, and very creative costume. Thank you for continue to sharing your arts with us. With many love from Malaysia :)
Bravi.. Bellisimo.. Thank you for streaming this. Really hope that the opera and musical production can resume real soon and we audiences could go back to theatre to enjoy these splendid music.
Maravilhoso e pungente!
Very good.. Thanks you..

una ottima assistente di regia!
ahahahahah interessi familiari? :D
Marvellous! In every way.
I was expecting to see Dido?
But bravo bravo bravisimo Gracie
Emocionante!
Eccezionale. Bravi! Grazie per la condivisione. Grazie.
Bravo.
World class
Lindo!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Bravi Tutti!
Auguri!
57:23.. i cried here 😭🥺
51:50.. the heaven starts here
super
Beautifully staged and sung with the physical separation adding to the poignancy but not detracting from the performance at all. I wonder, if this is seen in twenty years, will it mystify the viewers?
🙏🙏🙏💖💖💖
I really liked this production, especially the way the music has been stripped back to the continuo and rethought. This gives a rough edge that makes the drama all the more gritty and real. I note that one commentator has called it an example of extreme bad taste, but how do we know what taste meant to Purcell. I think we are in danger of basing our perception on recordings like that of Janet Baker which, wonderful as it may be, is only one view of a work that would have constantly adapted to whatever instruments and voices were available. I initially found the poor English pronunciation annoying, but then reminded myself again that the English Purcell used would have been very different to my modern South East England accent.
Very interesting and well informed comments - but as to the 'poor English pronunciation' - how convinced are you that Anglophone singers performing in Italian/German/French sound perfect to native speakers - a bit of give and take is called for, surely?
@@jimsharpe8032 Hello Jim. To be honest with you I am not convinced at all, but as a repetiteur I have seen the lengths that anglophone singers go to in trying to sound as authentic as possible. We also have to bear in mind that a sung language is very different to a spoken one so, for example, a soprano will modify vowels incredibly above the stave. My personal comment was not so much about the pronunciation per se, more about a small number of incredibly mangled vowels and, as I noted, we cannot know what pronunciation would have sounded like in Purcell’s day anyway. My point was wholly that as I listened I corrected myself for my preconceptions about pronunciation. Ps I live in Spain, so am very aware of my own poor efforts to get my Spanish pronunciation correct.
Musically outstanding. Was puzzled by the uniform darkness of the stage. Also, not sure I get the idea of the women wearing their hoops on the outside of their skirts.
Purcell's Halloween Opera based on Virgil's Aeneid.

Certo che aggiungere due sottotitoli....

“No mistakes in the tango, not like life.
It’s simple. That’s what makes the tango so great.
If you make a mistake, get all tangled up, just tango on.”
FYI

Beautiful production, well sung, thank you. Just a little bit too dark, why couldn't we have a bit more lighting?
Unknown mysteries of light design :(

I am sorry....hideous voices. I would have had to leave.
There is not even one aria that has not been modified to the worst of course. Lots of musicality and lyricism lost . Thanks God Dido's lament was respected more or less. You see, there is too much material for comparison and the soprano thought twice before committing any crime left there to be compared!. This is supposed to be a classic presentation and not a modern modification for entertainment. Pluhar for example, who did it "variete" style was more honest. She never said that it was a "classic" opera presentation....and by the way the arias were untouched and perfect.
Peccato che manchi la didascalia
ci sono basta impostarle
Ugly! An example of extreme bad taste in performing a beautiful work. Do not watch it.
I have noticed that people often use these messages to attack others, so I just wanted to say that my question is not an attack but a genuine desire to explore your reaction to the production. I really liked it, so am really curious what it is that you dislike so much. Best Wishes!
I'm sorry to say it was disappointing under every respect.
