  • Mozart's first opera composed when he was 11 years old. Performed here by members of the Tölzer Knabenchor (Tölz boys choir) and Tenor Michel Lecocq. Eleven year old Soprano Allan Bergius is amazing as Melia the daughter and the rest of the cast are excellent as well. Complete credits can be seen at the beginning and end of the film. This performance is from 1983.

Thank you so much for sharing this gem - by far the best version available anywhere online. If I understood correctly, you said below that the DVD/original video you converted this from was misplaced, did you perhaps locate it in the meantime and if so could you rip it again in best possible quality (full DVD) and share it? It would be a true marvel because I can't imagine ZDF will ever release this, not even for the anniversary in 2023 (although it deserves a full restoration/Bluray treatment)

@@Fatzers I'm very sorry I only just now noticed you're comment. Even if I located the DVD I used to make this video I really wouldn't be able to make a video of any better quality than what you see here since the source is such poor quality. I did my best to make it look as good as I could but when the source is such low quality it's difficult to enhance the quality very much but I do think I succeeded in making a better quality video than others on UA-cam of this performance. I think the only hope of a good quality video is if somebody with the original LaserDisc converts it and uploads it to UA-cam. One more thing, the video looked a little better before it was uploaded. Some quality definitely gets lost in the uploading process. Thanks for your interest.

The 1984 travel to Japan came to be both end and start for the two careers of Cedric Rossdeutscher! He was one of 5 Tölzer boys who went with Bayerische Staatsoper for a row of "Zauberflöte" performances in Tokyo, and suddenly middle in one act his voice-break caught him! That was the end of his singing. - Instead he got fascinated by the long flight in the gigant areoplane, and decided to become a pilot - to which he held on, and today - he has as a senior chief pilot - led numerous of flights all around the globe with as delicate precsion as he once showed in the opera above....

Hello my old UA-cam friend! It was my understanding this was Mozart's first full Opera but a particular UA-cam commenter here makes a compelling argument that it was his second although the piece he mentions is listed as a singspiel and not an opera and he has a lot of information backing up his claim and appears to be very knowledgeable and I'm certainly not equipped to argue with him. Perhaps you could clarify whether or not this is Mozart's first opera I trust your judgement.

@@BartholomewSmutz - Rubbish! - This has happened a couple of times before - some ignorant having read somewhere about a Singspiel being the 1st opera.and believing he has discovered some important.news. But each time it has been fully crashed by real Mozart scientists. Already the first one, von Köchel, established it as "only a Singspiel, not having the opera attributes, which at the Mozart time were even more ardent to follow".
To be ruled as an opera it must for ex. start with an Overture written only foir the opera - Have a specially written drama text and coherent music to that text - Have a formal happy or unlucky ending. - The theme must be a running., coherent story fetched from real antique history or folkrore tales - The singers should act and were dressed as the people they were acting.
The Singspiel referred to obviously had nearly noithing of all this - and most important - it was a collection of different songs and music pieces, put together NOT by Mozart himself but by someone or someones else. Also Mozart did not take part in the Singspiel performance held 2 months before "Apollo et Hyacinthus".

@@52sport6469 I thought I could count on you for clarification! I certainly have more faith in your knowledge on the subject of this Opera than the person who posted two long diatribes in the comments. What's really annoying is the arrogant attitude and unfair personal criticism which implied I was deliberately misinforming people in the video description. I'm not a Musicologist or Scholar and get no big reward for posting this video other than the satisfaction that there are others who would appreciate this wonderful performance. Furthermore as far as I can tell mine is the only upload that is even of a watchable quality and I spent some time editing to improve it as much as I was able to make it more enjoyable. Then as a reward for my efforts I'm rewarded with an unwarranted harangue. Well, I suppose there is one in every crowd. Thanks again my friend for your support.

@@BartholomewSmutz - That man Bookaroo obviously is one of those who through the past 100 years have read the theories of a Hermann Abert over this subject and swallowed it and his story about 3 operas ordered with 3 different composers. There MIGHT have been such an idea, by someone (note that Abert has no name for this "someone" and no names for "the other two composers!!). But as that "someone" got no answer from any composer he at least made a constellation of a number of young Mozart´s numerous songs (mainly written for M:s sister Nannerl) to produce at least one such Singspiel/Opera. He hired a text writer and thus built the "Schuldigkeit" singspiel.
Also note that - as in all singspiels - the language was German, while all operas at that time were either in Latin, Italian or from old-French folklore. - The totally "reigning" opera composers in Germany/Austria, when Mozart grew up, were Gluck and the 2 brothers Graun - The 3 of them - together composed nearly 100 operas (!) - and NONE in German, only singspiels were.
So don´t argue with or care about that Bookaroo - there will always be individuals like him, deadly defending their ideas in whatever area of subjects there is between sky and earth ...!

@@52sport6469 You're right, I shouldn't have let his comments bother me. I think people who are absolutely wrong are the ones that defend their position most vehemently. Interesting info about Gluck who I'm familiar with but I never heard of the brothers Graun. I suppose the brothers works are not well-known generally? It's strange how sometimes certain composers even very prolific ones is lost history. Just a couple of nights ago I was watching a documentary about Vivaldi's Four Seasons and learned that for a considerable period of time Vivaldi's music despite how popular it is today was forgotten for about 200 years.

www.extoelzer.de - The Tölz Boys 'Choir was founded by Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden in 1956 and a few years after it was founded, it was already one of the most popular and versatile boys' choirs. With pioneering interpretations, especially in the field of baroque music, the Tölzer made a not insignificant contribution to the change in musical performance practice. Tölz soloists took over the boy roles at Europe's leading opera and concert halls. The choir is also in demand for performances of large oratorio and symphonic works with renowned orchestras and conductors. Artists such as Carl Orff, August Everding, Hans Werner Henze, Leonard Bernstein, Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Claudio Abbado are among the sponsors of the choir. Herbert von Karajan even called the Tölz Boys' Choir "one of the best choirs in the world".

Thank you so much for you to upload such a precious recording of Mozart's first Opera. I find it very interesting how Father Rufinus Widl, the writer of this wonderful comedy, adapted Ovid's Motamorphosis to a Christian drama, the theme of which is the resurrected life of Hyacintus and the marriage between Apollo and Melia. It seems to symbolize the transformation from polytheistic love-drama to Christian comedy of resurrected life. As a Japanese Mozart fan and philosopher of religious music, I entreat you to recover the Japanese subtitles which you have blotted out, which would be very helpful for many Mozart fans in Japan.

When I converted the poor quality DVD to video I found the subtitles distracting so I blurred them out for that reason. I didn't realize that there would be much interest from Japanese speaking people I wish now I had not done it. To uncover the Japanese subtitles I would have to completely redo the conversion from DVD which I'm not even sure I have anymore to video all over again so I don't see that happening unfortunately. The original source of this video is a LaserDisc that was released I think only in Japan I would love to get my hands on that LaserDisc but it's like looking for a needle in a haystack however someone in Japan might be able to find it. Some years back there was a couple of excerpts from someone that had the LaserDisc and it was in good quality but I haven't seen those up on UA-cam in years. If I could find that LaserDisc I would somehow find a way to convert it so I could upload a better quality video but I'm not holding my breath.

Diese Leistung wurde auf LaserDisc veröffentlicht und ich wünschte, ich könnte eine Kopie erhalten, aber das ist sehr unwahrscheinlich.
