  • Thank you so much for being here. On this travel assignment, I am working 3x12s. The days are long and my body is pushed to the max. I work in ortho/trauma which means I get to assist on some pretty gruesome cases. The injuries I have seen range from broken femurs, broken wrists to amputations of the limbs when they cannot be saved.
    I have never worked at a facility like this before. I am thankful for this kind of experience and my surgical skills have only gotten better.
    I appreciate all the support and here is the link to my meal prep video ➡️ • What I Eat At Work: Su...

    I would be happy to answer your questions and I love to be transparent.

    Please keep the videos coming! I am in a surgical tech program with hopes of becoming a surgical assistant. There are so many surgical tech videos out there in comparison to surgical assisting and I'm hungry for more. Thank you for the video!

    i’m currently in Surgical Tech school and looking to become a first assistant after. i wanted to ask do you work with one specific physician or can you pretty much jump in any case and play the first assistant role?

      Every hospital I have worked at, I have worked with different surgeons. I am assigned a room at the beginning of the day so that’s where I stay. In other jobs I have had, I have been float which means I give breaks and lunches to the other CSAs.

  • @heatherstein9576
    @heatherstein9576 Рік тому +3

    How often do you not get a chance to take your lunch? What do you do if you have to sneeze, cough, blow your nose, or go to the bathroom during a procedure?

    • @alejandragalvan2086
      @alejandragalvan2086  Рік тому

      As far as lunches, if the hospital has staff then they try to get everyone for lunch. Sometimes I do have to clock out no lunch because there is no relief. I always go to the bathroom before I scrub in or In between cases! You can sneeze right into your mask and if you have to blow your nose, you can scrub out but it definitely depends on what case you are doing and what surgeon you’re working with 😅

    Is CSFA still a position that hospitals are hiring? I’ve seen that a lot use residents or PAs for the jobs… is it the same as CSA?

    • @alejandragalvan2086
      @alejandragalvan2086  Рік тому +1

      Yes! I have been a CSFA for 3 years and traveling for 1 year. Most hospitals do not use us but some still need help in the OR. I don’t particularly do any clinic work, I just work in the operating room.

      Some states don't recognize the First Assist. In SC, you'll see RNs and scrub techs or CST. I also scrubbed and assisted frequently as a RN. If the surgeon has a PA, they usually are the assistant.

    Great video, thank you so much for sharing. Can I ask you if there is any kind of a time for a typical case? Like is a typical case two hours four hours, etc.?

      It depends on the speciality and the surgeon. I’ve done lap choles that are done in 30 min and I’ve done them where it took 2 hours.

    I hear PAs and NPs are also first assist to the surgeon in the OR. I was not aware of this position, seems like fun, especially the travel aspect.

    • @alejandragalvan2086
      @alejandragalvan2086  Рік тому +2

      Yes that is true. One of the hospitals I worked had NPs and PAs first assist surgeon. In that case, I was just an extra hand.
      Not a lot of people are aware of what a first assistant is and there are a lot of us!

      Hello! Surgical techs prepare the operating room before the surgery takes place and get their instruments ready. They pass sterile instruments to the surgeon and first assistant (me) throughout the procedure.
      A surgical assistant prep and position the patient. We help drape the patient for the surgery, we do more hands on work such as suturing, retracting and exposing the field for the surgeon.

      @@waseemsajjad5481 I became a surgical first assistant by attending a first assistant program. There’s a few in the US. In searching schools to become a CST I found one that allowed dual certification, but since I missed the deadline I ended up going with another school (that didn't offer dual options); so I'm in a ST program but hope to also get CSPDT

Trust me a sub specialty makes more than a regular scrub tech and starting pay is awesome the national average of $36/hr as a new graduate. As a traveler you can make anywhere from $2,500-$5,000/week per contract. Good luck!
