This guy is teaching techs? My first and foremost recommendation is always to show no fear. Fear travels and surgeons can smell it. I’m on my 21st year of doing this. Case setup becomes your own, you take something from every preceptor.
Hey man, I love your videos, I’m a scrub tech also and I’ve been doing it for about two years now. I was wondering if you could make a video explaining CPR in a surgical setting. I’m CPR certified but the matter is never touched on during the CPR course and my facility has never had an Inservice or drill on the matter I know in the books it says maintaining a sterile field is your top priority and the 2nd scrub will usually start compressions and the nurse will get the crash cart but I know real world situations are different. I think it’s a good topic that is very informative. Keep up the work with the awesome videos!

@@mozzytrainer School is hard as fuck right now with limited classes. Good instructors and cutting corners are make or break more than ever and its hard to do labs with an hour of class once a week.

I’m used to that smell, being a surgical patient. You’ll get immune to it; for me, it’d be the minute a patient is opened up (bowel or abdominal surgery). I start in October.
Depending on where you are there is private practices surgeon who does look for surgical techs. I am in Massachusetts and they are always looking but sometimes you have to do more like be a medical assistant, central processing and surgical technician into one
Im debating because some procedures like heart surgeries etc look so cool and interesting to me. Yes as long you have support system in place for when you are at work or on call. The hours varies depending on the hospital. I have done shifts like 7-3, 7- 5:30, 11-7, 11-9. You can do three 12 hour shift so you have 4 days off. It depends. I became a mother 2 years into my career. i have been a surg tech for 16 years. It is a juggle but its doable.
I'm surprised that I haven't seen any comments that mention that surgical technology used to not require a degree and it was a certificate program or no program at all. You learned on the job. I've met a few newer STs that said this same thing lol they said school was actually a waste of money. It's kinda a gimmick but you require a degree now which is not necessary for this job. It's too bad they didn't keep it a certificate.
The bovie plume has always smelled like burnt popcorn or cookies to me 🤔 I don't know why 😂🤣 In my 8 years the worst thing I have smelled would be the odor from draining stomach cyst

Keep up the great work! I just turned 50 this past December. Started the prerequisites in Jan of 2017. Accepted into the CST program this Fall. My GPA is currently at 3.65. I will graduate with an AAS Degree Summer of 2019. My plan is to continue on to a First Assist Program. You've got this!

Current students and past students, how stingy was your school with supplies? Mine will use sponges and drapes until they no longer resemble sponges and drapes even though all of our supplies are donated and we have tons. I feel like $40,000 for this program should get us a lot more than we do. My teachers will throw fits when I bring it up or open new supplies.
Chris Gibbons Everything we have is donated from hospitals in the area so we reuse everything we have until they fall apart too. Our OR beds are very old and our dummys fall apart easily or don’t move well. All of our instruments were donated too and arent in good condition, but they get the job done. Our program only gets about $2000 a year and that basically only covers our gown, gloves, and other daily wear I assume. Really stinks since its part of University of Cincinnati, OH and a healthcare field, but we work with what we have!

@@bklyn2miami553 The circulator in the OR is a registered nurse who pretty much controls the flow of the room from set-up to the end of surgery. They also assist with patient positioning, shaving etc. If the Tech forgets something in the supply room (for the operation), its the responsibility of the circulator to go back the supply room and retreive it for them. :)
I have a few questions about the search Tech program school that you went to. Mainly the question is about the open lab or did you have a more constructive lab that you guys attended the thing is the school that I go to we have open labs and it is a total free-for-all I mean I'm not kidding. Over this entire semester I have been telling my instructors that I'm not able to get the practice that I need you know because the space is incredibly limited they only have tubes instructors while people running the Open Lab for like 20 students and they only offer openlab seven and a half hours a week it's just really like I I'd like to know is this comment that or is it uncommon that you get ignored like when you ask for help.

I graduated in 2014, at the age of 42. I have a husband, and 3 children who were in school by the time that I enrolled in classes. Difficult, but doable in terms of logistics. I lived and died by my calendar to keep me organized.
True about working with different people, you get A' holes in all walks of life and it's the same in the surgical environment. It is, what it is. Like the Rock said, when working as student. You need to "shut your mouth, and know your damb role". Biting your lip, when condersended to or put in you 'student' place is one of the hardest skill to develop. It is, what it is...

Amanda Hurt The accreditation body seems to be moving towards making it mandatory to have a Degree (Associates in Applied Science) instead of a Diploma.
I’m aware that you need to attain an associate’s degree to become a surgical tech, though if I have a bachelor degree in medical bioscience, would I still have to get an associate’s degree to be a surgical tech?
I had to stop college for a year due to my dads surgery, I plan on restarting this coming semester, my question is should I pursue the certification or should I pursue the long term associates degree in surgical assisting

She's seen techs that can't even 'drape a mayo'. This refers to covering a mayo stand with a sterile drape. The mayo stand is the adjustable, moveable stand the Surg Tech places instruments on for use at the surgical field. They are easily accessible to the tech to pass to the surgeon. The 'drape' is a sterile cover placed on the stand itself, creating a sterile place to lay out the instruments. Knowing how to drape your mayo is an essential step in setting up your OR. I'm halfway through my 18 month Surg Tech certification course, so I'm still learning, but I do know how to drape a mayo! 😜

I had reconstructive surgery on my nose here in philly and my plastic surgeon worked out of Temple Univ hospital..I think most are done that way..

I graduated in 2014, at the age of 42. I have a husband, and 3 children who were in school by the time that I enrolled in classes. Difficult, but doable in terms of logistics. I lived and died by my calendar to keep me organized.

The mayo stand is the adjustable, moveable stand the Surg Tech places instruments on for use at the surgical field. They are easily accessible to the tech to pass to the surgeon. The 'drape' is a sterile cover placed on the stand itself, creating a sterile place to lay out the instruments. Knowing how to drape your mayo is an essential step in setting up your OR. I'm halfway through my 18 month Surg Tech certification course, so I'm still learning, but I do know how to drape a mayo! 😜
