Hilarious, I was nearly on the floor. Extraordinary just how many clueless people on here have no idea this is a piss-take & think it a real performance. Obviously Perlman is indeed a great violinist, & some joker but first-rate player has somehow managed to record over the top of his actions with unerring precision. It takes great ability to be able to play so poorly. It seems only those with a musical ear will find it amusing, & for those who haven't one it's almost impossible to say why it is...just as it would be explaining to someone who didn't speak Dutch why a play on words in that language is so funny. The Perlman / Mendelssohn & Lang Lang shreds are superb too. More please!

I used to think so too when I was young, but now I know that the whole orchestra is there just to perform the conductor's vision of the piece. He makes the arrangement, he decides how each member of the orchestra should play their part, and most of the work is done before the concert in numerous rehearsals. The concert is just the tip of the iceberg, so to say.
Then there are virtuosos, such as Perlman here, who get to do their own thing.

God these things are hilarious. They work so well when the musicians have these serious expressions on their faces. Love it in the early part when he is doing some chops and then finishes with a little bit of a bad "Badenerie" lick at the end. That was like his goto lick when he ran out of anything else. I bet most of the musicians parodied find these funny when they're done well, like this one.

Whether he is, or whether he ain't, I stand by my original comment: have fun with music and 'shred' whatever you like, which is what a real virtuoso like Perlman can (and does) do! BTW I know Itzhak personally and played in the LPO and Philharmonia Orchestra, with him as soloist, various times in London during the late 70's-80's. And yes, a number of us used to 'shred' with him backstage at the Royal Festival Hall during rehearsal breaks and had a hilarious time doing so. (I'm a retired violist)
