There are employees at the Stradivarius Museum whose job it is to take these magnificent instruments out of their cases and play them, usually two or three times a year. Apparently they lose tone if they are not played. To paraphrase, "A Stradivarius is safe in a museum, but that is not what they are for."
Indeed. An instrument is meant to bring joy and beauty to the world. How can it do that locked up in a display? An instrument MUST be played the way a book MUST be read.

@@ACoustaDC At that level u're spending a lot of time w/ the instrument every day, so it's never out of sight. Most top professionals hv rigorous daily practice routines, 5-8 hrs a day. Electric bass another story. She's not at all rich, but she should be! That's jazz for u.
I’ve been playing for 22 years. I honestly cannot hear any special difference with the stradivarius violins. An experiment was done where professional soloists played many violins in the dark - some of the violins were stradivarius, some were modern violins, and some were even violins under $2,000. Not a single soloist could pin point the strads. AND some of them actually preferred the sound of the modern violins.
Carl Ciulla, I'm sure that Stradivarius was an excellent luthier ,(no spellchecker, I'm not trying to type Luther)but, I think that to say that he is the greatest and no one can make a violin better than him is ridiculous. Of course a violin thats 300 years old would sound great but, compared to what? A violin that is only made 100, 50 , or even 10 years old that has had time to age? They're telling me that in the modern times there isn't a luthier ,(stop it spellchecker) that can make a violin as well as Stradivarius? I've been playing on and off for over 50 years and I can't tell the difference. Jascha Heifetz finished a concert and went into his dressing room. He heard a knock on the door and it was a fan that wanted to congratulate him. He said," Sir, your violin sounded magnificent tonite!" Heifetz picked up his violin and held it to his ear and said, "hmmmm, I don't hear anything"!
Oh my goodness it is truly beautiful. I can hear it. I was going to be critical but wow. I understand it's amplified by the ideal acoustic surroundings but man that is undeniably one of the most beautiful sounds in existence.

It was on NPR.. this American life I believe.
The D string is gorgeous and i love that he goes up on the A string at 2:49 too
Very daring imo
A guy I went to high school with (class of '67) became a professional concert violinist. Sometime in the mid 1970's, he bought a Stradivarius for just a hair over $1 million. I wonder what that instrument is worth today? I also wonder what it is like to own something that is valuable and irreplaceable.
Do you have a name? It’s probably possible to find the exact violin that he played on by looking him up.
@@Josef_1186 Yes, if u're playing at a high professional level, u're expected to have one of the elite violins, in the six-figure range.
What is it like to own... it's a pain in the ass... always worrying about it... leaving it home so you don't mess it up... and then finding someone you trust to fix it... geez.. NO thank you.
@@ACoustaDC At that level u're spending a lot of time w/ the instrument every day, so it's never out of sight. Most top professionals hv rigorous daily practice routines, 5-8 hrs a day. I asked a world-renowned bassist I know how much she (transexual, used to be a man) practices, she said "That's all I do." Don't know anything about her acoustic bass, but she's remarkable! Electric bass another story. She's not at all rich, but she should be! That's jazz for u.
@Mike OMG Mike...you're so right!.... You're a genius .... oh great internet Swami.
The guy playing it could make any violin sound amazing. Damn he’s good
I can't stop listening to this. So beautiful
He said," Sir, your violin sounded magnificent tonite!" Heifetz picked up his violin and held it to his ear and said, "hmmmm, I don't hear anything"!
fiddlefaddle my point exactly, I feel like any talented musician can make any decent instrument sing beautifully.
@@CarloBenevissi exactement ami !
E allora non capisci un cazzo di violini, un violino moderno lo riconosce pure un non musicista (dal vivo ovvio)
I prefer a Guarneri del Gesu to a Strad! Paganini’s Il Cannone is a absolute monster of a violin!!
They sure had the right venue. The acoustics were perfect.
Yep
I would love to see this documentary in full. This brief promo is a joy to watch in itself.
The sound is so divine! You cannot put a price in this. I felt like crying(joy) when he played later
don't forget a shout out to the engineers / mix crew
how many different takes before it was decided where to stand and all that?
me on a $5 set of ear buds - Yes, sounds amazing
Musical instruments should be owned by musicians, not Swiss banks
Cough cough Messiah Strad Cough cough
...unless Swiss banks purchase them.
Took the words out of my mouth!
Musicians can rarely afford instruments with this price tag so private companies who possess the instruments and loan them to deserving musicians!
I am no violinist, but i think i've heard that the value of violins decrease when they are not beeing played on a regular basis
It almost looks like its glowing the wood is so beautiful
Oh my goodness it is truly beautiful. I can hear it. I was going to be critical but wow. I understand it's amplified by the ideal acoustic surroundings but man that is undeniably one of the most beautiful sounds in existence.
Asian guy: nothing will ever come close.
Guy who paid 15 mill: i sure hope not.
I didn’t expect such a big sound from such a small instrument… and through my iPhone speakers. I guess that’s one reason why these are worth so much.
Michio Kaku plays a mean fiddle.
lol.
Lmao.
Hereally looks like Michio Kaku.
I’m used to seeing Dr. Kaku with his white hair. A young Michio Kaku, perhaps?
🤣🤣🤣🤣
