TOOL are composed of four aliens from a musical dimension, who came here to give us something we've never heard. They've also done it in a way that no one has done before. SPIRAL OUT! KEEP GOING!
Listen to this track some more times and you will realize, that it is one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded. The message is about reaching out into the unknown, never stop learning, SPIRAL OUT!
I couldn’t agree more….not only is this their best song but it is one of the if not the greatest song I’ve ever heard….the only other 1 that comes to mind at the moment is Voodoo Chile(Slight Return) by Hendrix ….best band on the planet btw 😉🖤🥶
But reaching out into the unknown has more meaning than just exploring shit you aren’t familiar with. It has very subtle undertones of “stop fearing every little thing you don’t understand you coward” . If you want to truly reach out into the unknown then start with the things that are right infront of your face that you have refused to “get to know” for the majority of your life. This world is way bigger than the precious little safe bubble you have convinced yourself that it is
Welcome into the TOOL's rabbit-hole and truly it is a journey. The title track, "Lateralus", incorporates the Fibonacci sequence. The theme of the song describes the desire of humans to explore and to expand for more knowledge and a deeper understanding of everything. The lyrics "spiral out" refer to this desire and also to the Fibonacci spiral, which is formed by creating and arranging squares for each number in the sequence's 1,1,2,3,5,8,... pattern, and drawing a curve that connects to two corners of each square. This would, allowed to continue onwards, theoretically create a never-ending and infinitely-expanding spiral. Related to this, the song's main theme features successive time signatures 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8. The number 987 is the sixteenth integer of the Fibonacci sequence.!! Please react to TOOL - Forty Six & 2...this one is an other turn in that rabbit-hole for sure.
To add to the "1,1,2,3,5,8" pattern, listen again and pay attention to the syllables as he sings them. He spirals out and spirals back down in places. 1-Black 1-Then 2-White are 3-All I see 5-In my infancy 8-Red and yellow then came to be
Tool is usually classified as “prog metal” (complex and changeable time signatures with a heavy metal sound)…some say that Tool is in its own genre, rather like Pink Floyd. I tend toward that belief. Utterly original. One of the best bands of the last 30 odd years. Tool’s creative process is that the score is produced by the three musicians (drummer, bass and guitar) working out the arrangement, then handing it over to the lyricist (the vocalist Maynard James Keenan) to put his ideas to the music. Heavy on philosophy, spirituality, social commentary. Serious stuff. No love songs here. You do really need the lyrics before you, as the meaning is often the point. Tool music, like most prog rock and metal, requires pretty serious listening. Not for everybody….and even for those who love them, not all the time, IMO. They are just SO intense.
Dave Bottrill, who produced the Aenima album, said "TOOL are prog, but in a completely different way. Most prog bands use the song to showcase their musicianship. TOOL use their musicianship to showcase the song."
There is that point in 10,000 Days where writes directly about his mom, which is kind of a switch of mentality - though it fits as a personal conviction of the vocalist and he finds a way to make work with the overall attitude of Tool.
This is THE COOLEST CD 💿 I EVER BOUGHT, I don't have it anymore. But the inside of it was multi-layered and just cool AF!!! The concert was great too, terrible seats, I can't believe they sold them to me. Expensive AF too
"The devil went down to Georgia, he was lookin' for a soul to steal. He was in a bind, he was way behind, he was willing to make a deal. When he came across a young Dan playin' the skins and makin' them rock, but the devil just walked on by and said that he'd rather suck a cock."
"I'd have to listen to it a couple of times to really take it all in..." - that's REALLY how it begins. So happy for y'all. Tool us the RIGHT rabbit hole to fall down...
The time signature changes starts in 8/8 then 9/8, then 7/8. The working title for the song before it was called Lateralus was 7-8-9. You should do Wings for Marie or Rosetta Stoned next.
Great music, and the reaction was good too. Keep listening. This is my workout music. Always inspires me to push harder and get through a workout. All their music is like this. Keep listening to new songs and react.
People always tell new listeners to stay away from the videos to TOOL songs. This is basically true for some songs but there are several songs that hit different and enhance your TOOL song experience when hearing the song and watching the video. The videos answer questions that all listeners have after hearing the song so as your are hearing the song you read explanations that help you understand the deep and complex meanings of the song and lyrics. Lateralus had a video that goes with this song that enhances the experience and explains what everybody is posting in the comments. Another song that 100% requires the video is Forty Six & Two. It keeps new listeners from looking at each other with that WTF look. Another song that 100% needs to be watched with the video is Parabol/Parabola which are listed as seperate tracks but have to be listened to as one song. Again the video will enhance your experience and answer questions everybody always has on first listen. You can say the experience and journey while you listen and learn what the meaning of the songs are will be on a religious level. Although the song Right in Two is one of their more basic songs as far as time signatures and lyrical content, there is a video that goes with this song that is animated that visually captures what the song is portraying to the listener. In my opinion those are Masterpieces that with the videos are enjoyed and no drugs required you will however feel like you are on some good shit during and after listening to the songs. God Bless all my fellow TOOL Army members and I apologize for the long diatribe. ✌️
I’ve been a Tool fan since first hearing “Sober” in 93 (I was 21-22) I’ve been lucky enough to see them live 4 times the 1st time being when they toured this album & after all these years I’ve concluded this is their best song &. 1 of the best rock songs ever created 🖤y’all be safe🥶
Tool is an entirely unique rabbit hole. You hit on several aspects simultaneously. They do take you on a journey (builds slowly into very intense prog metal). Dead right that it is primitive and tribal but also spiritual at the same time. There is so much going on musically and lyrically. Multiple listens are required. This is older Tool (2001). Their most recent release “Fear Inoculum” (2019) is incredible. All of it great, “Pneuma” is a masterpiece in my opinion.
You guys are cool and likable and open-minded and seem to get it very well for a first listen! If you continue onward with them you’ll not only get tons more subscribers but also will most likely fall in love with the band! And you’ll probably need more like 10-20 listens to this song to really let it sink in. After 100 times you’ll have most of it memorized haha. Spiral out! 🌀
The thing I love about reactionn videos to this song is people trying to figure out (and especially nthe people with less musical theory background) trying to figure out how to groove to it and WHERE THE F*CK IS ONE!!
You would think there's more instruments, but there's just 1 guitar, 1 bass and 1 drummer 🤘but you're right. I don't know how you would compose this with just that 😮
Tool cheats you out of a groove, Just when you think a groove is about to well, groove, it take's a left turn and then you're offbeat. Then you want to hear it again and again. I think after your 100th listen to this song, you start to get it, and therein lies the "groove". Know what I mean?
It never gets old for me. I literally worked overnight and went to the music store and waited for it to open the day this album came out. I liked Tool before Lateralus. But the timing in my life, the events that happened shortly after, and how I was growing as an individual created a perfect storm for this record to fuck my world up in the best possible way.
Just to give ya an idea of how large of a fan base and how loyal Tool fans are, they released their latest album almost 15 years after their last one. The next day Taylor Swifts album was no longer #1. Tool out sold a modern pop star after almost 15 years of no new music just shows the impact that they have had on people and add Tool The Grudge to the list
Polyrhythmic structure…that is the changing time signature you mentioned having trouble picking up on…youll hear it often in jazz and Afro-Cuban world music… as drummer with roots in world percussion, polyrhythms are favorite language…loved your reaction!
They play of to make you uneasy then when the main riff, Chorus comes in they are playing together. Like everything is chaotic then everything makes sense all of a sudden.
I enjoyed the reaction, and it actually seemed like a genuine first-time listen which is not always the case. Tool is an incredible band, best on the planet IMO. There are catchier riffs out there and as you said other songs are easier to find the time signature, but the combination of elite instrumentation, intelligent song writing, a good vocalist and the quality lyrics/messaging makes the band second to none for me. Your first song should probably have been something like The Pot or Aenema, a lot easier to digest. You should always have the lyrics up for yourselves as well. Im not a Tool OG, i was almost 30 before I was mature enough to appreciate the music. But I hope you spiral out and keep going, you will both enjoy the ride if you do.
I've been listening to Tool for 30 years now, and every once in a while I still catch myself picking up on things that I had never noticed before. I hope you'll plunge into the Tool rabbit hole, but be prepared to hear musics, sounds and time signatures you're not used to.
I thought she nailed it with her reactions about the colors with motherly instinct until she talked. Newborns only see black and white, hence the baby toys, then yellow and red came to me with infinite possibility's explains the rest. Visually I thought she grasped it.

tool is the greatest band my ears have ever heard stray away from music videos for your first reaction very creative but distracting and y’all are gonna need lyrics lol you should do vicarious next
If you count the syllables of each line it swings in and out of the spiral that is a fibbonacchi sequence. And the singer studied shamanism and uses the beats in his music a lot
I believe the colors is a look at when a child is born it first sees black and white then after a while it starts to see red and yellow and so on just a thought as above so below alludes to manifesting what you want
For a first-time Tool listener, this is certainly not the most accessible piece to start with. I would suggest Pneuma, Schism or The Pot for a “smoother” intro. You kinda got dropped into the deep end….or perhaps half-way to the deep end.😉 But please, DEFINITELY, do listen to more Tool. Very rewarding once you get an ear for it.
The Pot was much more accessible.. Tool is tough to jump into but worth it once you start to get a feel for it. As other say you learn to sway! Try Vicarious or Right in Two next, but do keep going.
Tool is a beautiful time signature mess once you think you have it they switch it up. The song I think is about being a life from start to finish basically and not overthinking and missing out on life. Ride the spiral!
TOOL are composed of four aliens from a musical dimension, who came here to give us something we've never heard. They've also done it in a way that no one has done before. SPIRAL OUT! KEEP GOING!

Danny Carey made a deal with the devil. We don't know what he got out of it, but the devil got drum lessons.
