    I've read the singer, Maynard James Keenan likes for his voice to be considered another instrument along with the rest of TOOL: Adam Jones on guitar, Danny Carey on drums, and either Paul D'Amour (he left the band in 1995) or Justin Chancellor on bass. As such, Maynard will be mixed lower in most of their songs.
    He does have 2 other bands, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer, where his vocals are more prominent. A Perfect Circle is more Alt Rock, whereas Puscifer is more experimental and doesn't typically stick to one sound.
    I would recommend using lyrics for TOOL, maybe read them in the pauses or at the end, as well as strongly advising against any music videos until after you have listened to the audio alone.
    I find most TOOL songs to be based around the build. They also usually have more complex time signatures, polyrhythms, and polymeters. This can sound off at first, but just go with it and the songs are highly enjoyable.

      He stopped fronting the band at live shows, for just this reason. You can usually barely see him at a live performance, because he doesn’t believe your attention should be on any one member.
      He wants you to appreciate the entire product. His voice being subdued is completely intentional.

    It’s a song about hypocrites, the pot calling the kettle black… Pissing over my black kettle. In my opinion, this is the best band in human history, all four men are masters, their trade, and the lyrics are so deep they’ll always leave you pondering about yourself and life, even after listening to them for 30 years as I have.

    • @swfcocs1

      Isn't it partly aimed at Led Zeppelin and other artists who took from black mainly blues artists then later sued upcoming artists for taking from them?

    • @robertdysonn
      @robertdysonn Рік тому

      @@swfcocs1 that I’m not sure, but that’s the thing about tools songs is they’re always designed to have personal meaning for anyone who listens to them. It’s a song about hypocrites, it’s always hard to know what the original thought was when it was written. That’s the thing about music, it’s an evolution process where every new band that comes up is been influenced by previous bands, so I’m not sure that’s what they would’ve been talking about.

    • @swfcocs1
      @swfcocs1 Рік тому

      @robertdysonn true, I've never been a huge Tool fan, I'm more Pink Floyd. Zeppelin, BB King etc but they have produced some truly great songs

      @robertdysonn Рік тому +1

      @@swfcocs1 I understand, actually, the bands that you mentioned are the ones that I grew up on and I still love. To me, it’s the lyrics the tool uses that really shine above the rest though. One of my all-time favorite songs, especially now that I’m getting older is Time by Pink Floyd, that one gets me close to tears every time I hear it. I get it in the tool a little more because when I was a teenager in the 80s that old Metallica, Iron Maiden and Megadeth in the 80s was where I was at.

    • @swfcocs1
      @swfcocs1 Рік тому

      bingo. ego. answer to most mjk related questions is usually "ego". "you" (44&2 disharmonic consciousness). defining, confining controlling, and sinking deeper. like "eyeballs deep in muddy waters" ...can't see past own bullshit. from eulogy (which is a eulogy to the ego) "ranting and twirling his finger at everything but the heart, we'll miss him, we're gonna miss him, we're gonna miss you (44&2 disharmonic consciousness)" from "hooker with a penis": "well now i've got some advice for you little buddy, before you point your ("you") finger (44&2 disharmonic consciousness), "you" should know that i'm the man, and if i'm the man, then you're the man, and he's the man as well! so "you" can point that fucking ("you") finger up your assssss!" = "crucify the ego, and you will come to find we are all one mind" = "take care not to make me enter, 'cause if i do we BOTH (as if separate, severed, broken) ...may disappear"
      soften this old armor -_-

    Tool Army reporting. Tool is it's own genera. They are progressive, think Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, but more metal. Tool uses a lot of polyrhythms and timings besides the 4/4 you are used to with most music. "Danny Carry" is considered one of the best drummers in the world, often referred to as the octopus. The the strings are "Adam Jones" on guitar and "Justin Chancellor" Bass (who replaced "Paul D'Amour" in 1995 after their first album). Vocals are by "Maynard James Keenan", who also has two other bands "A Perfect Circle" and "Puscifer". The three musicians create the music then give it to Maynard for the lyrics.
    In the mix all members are treated as interments, so the vocals are in the music and not over it. There is no such thing as a bad tool song, there are good and grate songs. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, the music is deep and emotional. Music videos are just for a visual stimulation to go with the song and don't necessarily represent the subject of the song. Videos are created by Adam Jones who worked as a special effects artist on several big movies.

    To MOST reactors that are discovering TOOL they come to realize that they need to do an audio with lyrics since the majority of their music is thought provoking and very complex. These guys are intelligent and have lyrics that have many ways to get their messages across. I’ve also enjoyed other reaction artists who look up the meanings and learn what the song is about before they listen since 90% get it wrong.

    Funny you should say that because Adam Jones and Tom Morello were buddies in high school back in Illinois and were in a band together. Maynard tried out for Rage, but didn’t have the hip hop element so he introduced him to Adam Jones who was working on the special effects team on Jurassic Park at the time. Both bands would end up playing on Lollapalooza 93 tour. Crazy

    Tool is very complex in so many ways, from the poly-rhythmic sounds to the poetic lyrics with underlying meanings, not everyone is going to get them at first listen. I've watched reactors say what they thought about a song, then when they reacted to another tool song they talk about how it was on their mind for days after and their understanding has changed. The truth is, this happens to everyone who actually listens and thinks.

      "you better listen!" there are ppl 31 years in that are still not getting it, at all.
      mjk songs are all the same song. "from a different angle, under a different light, so we can hopefully see it for the first time" ...again, every track mjk has ever laid down is done to support a singular "surprise locomotion" train of thought ...a "and. you. bought. ONE!" "singular purpose" ...regarding 46&2 collective, unity, harmonic, christ consciousness.
      EGO assumes each mjk track is its own song, as if separate from the whole. unfortunate "overthinking/overanalyzing" mistranslation. ego brain's will not be able to hear full potential of mjk's artistic output. "message of hope FOR THOSE WHO CHOOSE TO HEAR IT". hearing mjk tracks as anything "separate" is bullshit ...and your "warning".
      no, "we are all one mind", and mjk is "singing one familiar song". (coincidentally? or not at all? but this "singular" idea is the exact same "one" as tenacious d's "tribute" ... "to the greatest song in the world" ...aka "great work" of alchemy, of transmutating base metal leaded broken consciousness into "you look so precious now" gold)

    First time catching your channel. Think y'all "got it" mostly by your end analysis. :) It's full of double entendres. Pot calling kettle black, as you figured out. Maynard is as brilliant at writing lyrics as he is in delivering them with that voice. The entire band is just off the chain talented. Their off-time beats, even from each other let alone the 4/4 your ears are MOST used to hearing, just sets them apart in MANY facets from anything else at that or this time. You would probably like the live drum cam version of Danny Carey, playing Pneuma. Your mind will be PEAKED by the end of it, wondering how his BRAIN, can force his LIMBS to carry 3 different rhythms at the same time... i have enough trouble COUNTING the timing through that portion, let alone separating out to each extremity the "how" he plays that, lol....

  • @heyskipj
    @heyskipj Рік тому +4

    TOOL! Vocals are mixed equally as 1/4 of the band. When they perform live, Maynard on vocals stages himself center-left, back by the drummer. The intent is to not get caught up in lyrics, or the singer as the frontman.
    Haven’t heard anything yet as far as switch ups, builds, and transitions. With Tool you’ll hear yourself saying, “polyrhythms“ even though you (or me) aren’t sure what that means. 😁
    The drummer’s nickname isn’t the Octopus for nothing.
    What next? Has to be “46 & 2”. More eyeballs on that album cover too! 🌀
    > Audio tracks are better for Tool than music videos. They’re very abstract. A completely different experience.

      if tool considers "fear innoculum" their seventh release, then they're including "since the first ep" opiate, as well as salival (tool)BOXset (4th album). which doesn't have any eyes "lifted to heaven" ...it is their square/terrestrial/earth/box set (which would also make sense re: undertow). they are sacred geometry freaks, so it follows/tracks: 1 opiate 2 undertow 3 aenima 4 salival 5 lateralus 6 10kdays 7 fear inoculum ...hmmm, i wonder...
      1 opiate (the grudge)

      8 ???????? (ticks & leeches) "hope this is what you wanted, hope this is what you had in mind, 'cause this is what you're getting" 8th album's gonna be about change. transformation. evolution. they all are, but not as central theme, motif, or mood. 1-7 was simply laying out the terms, before proceeding.

    You are the first reaction I've seen to key in on the pot calling the kettle black.The four members of Tool are all about Tool...don't look for a diva there.If you want more of the vocal,try "Right in Two".
    You are headed for the rabbit hole and I would welcome you to the fold.Tool fans are like family.The reunions are a blast.

    For a musician, the music is more important than the lyrics which is what Tool is about, Maynard uses his voice as the instrument that it is.

    Look up lyrics when you listen to Tool. Pay attention to the bass and drums together. It's the best way to experience Tool. Listen to Sober.

    Great video yall. Dont worry about the a$$holes talking junk.
    Maynard (vocals) is another instrument and he treats them as such. He is also fronting 2 other bands(Puscifer and A Perfect Circle) His lyrics always are layered with multiple meanings.
    For Tool i higly recommend Sober live at reading festival. You can see how Maynard 100% performs the song. That uncomfortable feeling you get is intentional.
    I could go on forever but let me end with This...
    Welcome to the Spiral......
    (Lateralus by Tool was written using the Fibonacci sequence so alot of Spiral references)
    Love yalls videos, there is alot of good chemistry with your reactions, and the genuine responses we look for.
    Have a great day and thank you for sharing your experiences with us.

    Maynard the vocalist likes his vocals to just be another instrument in the mix in this band..He is in 3 bands all very good. Also close connection between Tool and Rage Against the Machine. Both guitarists went to high school together and played in a band back then. Maynard also would work with Rage on songs and was considered for lead in Rage but was not chosen.

    Maynard is the "anti-frontman." Most of his singing is underneath the music.

      mjk also believes lyrics/words get in way of the music, generally speaking. like - "hush, talking monkeys. try and read between the lines, move to the spaces betwixt, between the sounds". "the real shit" is in the music ("you better listen!"). applying lyrics like decal stickers at tail end of process is mjk merely interpreting "the real shit". by lyrical design, ego brains will not be able to hear "the real shit". they are too busy treating mjk's artistic output through lens of hit parader magazine, as if he's not doing something never before done/seen before. ego brains are cynical, forgetting they are not the artist on mission to transmutate our collective consciousness...

    Other Tool songs to check out:
    Right in Two
    Sober
    Pushit
    Bottom
    Hooker with a Penis
    Jambi
    H
    The Grudge
    … basically pick a Tool song and you’ll likely enjoy it.
    I would recommend “feeling” their songs first before analyzing meaning from them. Tool songs are often dense and MJK says the lyrics are open to interpretation. Some of them are pretty easy to understand and others might require multiple listening sessions to get them.
    Been a fan for 30 years and they never get old. Their early stuff is more rock but they gradually get more metal and then progressive metal with more dense and intricate music. Sometimes they can be a bit overwhelming to a new listener but don’t be afraid to come back and try a different song. 🤘🏻

    Gotta check out Electric Callboy (Hypa Hypa, We Got the Moves, or Tekkno Train)!! Basically Tool or Rammstein mixed with EDM and pure pop. Think most refer to them as "Party Core" as they mix humor with metal... never sure whether to bang your head or twerk with them!! 🤣😂
