GameStop's one advantage over mom and pop shops is gone. I saw it coming, but I did not expect them to fumble this hard. It will only be a matter if time before they cancel this retro project.
I don't know man.... I'm kinda sick of paying stupidly expensive prices for games just because the Internet says so. A month ago, I bought Urban Reign for $50+ but at game stop they have it complete for $30. Like if the prices are better than eBay or local stores{ as much as I love my friend's game store } My wallet and patience for paying stupidly high prices for a piece of plastic and paper. Lol but if their prices are going to be lower and you get the same quality as local stores, things may change.
@@vkermodekumav8949 The prices are either about the same or higher for me. Granted where I stay I have multiple options and two chain stores that sell old video games and dvds. That is a bit much for Urban Reign I got my copy for around $30 at Gamexchange around two years ago. I don't like paying high prices either, but atleast at these stores or ebay I can usually find a cheaper alternative while having the quality I want. Gamestop on the other hand is still a risk because they'll take in broken disc or fake cartridges and still try to up charge you on the price. It's not gonna last if they try to match online prices.
Must have a cool employee at that store to let you dig through stuff behind the counter. Last year i was at a GameStop and i saw a employee sorting through one of the drawers behind the counter. And there were titles that weren't on the shelf. So i asked if i could just look over his shoulder as he sorted he said sure no problem. Well like 2 minutes later his manager walks out from the backroom and screams at him telling him he's not supposed to let customers see what's in the drawers. Not the first problem I've had with GameStop and their drawers. For a lot of times when purchasing a pre-owned game I'll pick a copy off the shelf and when they go to get the game to put inside the case. They love to fish out the worst banged up generic case to give you. I'm like Hellz no. I want the official case with artwork i just pulled off the shelf.
I actually cleaned up on ebay the last two weeks for xboc 360. Pricy rare titles mostly half off. I want to give my money to a local shop but nobody is willing to deal because everyone is obsessed with price charting and ebay.
I think as a retro collector there is this circle that we all learn from, yet still fall back into. I remember watching your videos from your pasts on how you said you learned from your mistakes as a collector not buying everything because you started to run out of space and as you grew and watched on UA-cam how other collectors mentioned how they sold their collections pieces that had no nostalgia meaning to them and never played. Learning from that you sold BIG part of your collection and only focusing on games that meant something to you and played. I remember you also saying you don’t collect for value but just collect games that have a connection and meaning to you but now you are focused again on liquidating games of lower value to only collect high end pieces. Also keeping games sealed. I think that’s what makes collecting fun is it’s a big circle and as much as you learn from thing you tend to go back to what you did before because you want the best of both worlds. You want a lot of games that mean something to you, yet you want the games show value on how good of a collectors piece it is and having a high value collection holds more weight in gold than just ordinary games. My collection is a mix of things but a lot of its very high value games. I don’t collect any NES because to be honest once I got the Sega Genesis I hated the NES because there were a lot of hours wasted with the Nintendo would freeze or flash purple and pink. If I’m not mistaken you’re now focused on games that are more rare and and valuable? I also don’t know how you like the games from GameStop because all their games have those stickers and that ruins the nostalgia feel for me. I like to have a game mint because that’s how I always kept my games.
All you are saying is spot on. Also I feel the sudden decision to go into “retro games” by GameStop is them testing the market for future proofing themselves as the manufacturers are pushing digital and trying to eliminate disc drives for physical media.
There is only one mom and pop shop for retro gaming in my area and i’ve already gone through most of their inventory since its a pretty small store. I was hoping gamestop retro would have a lot to offer because i recently started collecting for a personal collection. But you said it yourself, every time i walk in there, theres very few ps2, ps3, wii, and wiiu games. I hate the feeling of walking into a gaming store excited, and leaving empty handed and a bit sad. My best bet is to venture out to other cities that are 30mins away from home to try my luck at other stores and hopefully find some good stuff
Most price changes are done Saturday Night/Sunday Morning and I think Tuesday night /Wednesday morning. But there are spontaneous price changes at open on random days. Maybe they’re doing it more often.
I worked for EB when GameStop took over. Back then, we did price changes one to two times per week. After the acquisition, we had to complete our daily counts as well as almost daily price changes. I don't know if established Gamestop locations had to deal with that, but at my EB, that's how it was.
Hey man enjoy it while you can. I knew that buying old games at half market price couldn't last forever. Honestly I've been done with Gamestop for awhile now. 360 and Wii U are cool and all, but I've got my eye on other things. If they carried CiB PSP games I'd be in my local stores at least once a week!
I'm actually ok with them doing this for one simple reason: At least they're still selling games in store. Hear me out. If you've ever hunted for games at goodwill, there is a good chance you'll have noticed that you've never seen a single video game on the shelves. Believe me, it's not that they don't get games in because I've worked at one and they absolutely do. But they put all of them straight online for top dollar because there is an infinitely larger customer base there and they milk it bad. GameStop could very easily do this exact thing and get top dollar but they are at least putting them in store. So they might make adjustments but it will probably still be lower than top ebay prices, and you still get the experience of going in a physical store and hunting.
The 4 for 40 has always been a scam. It is a way to move inventory. Once you learn about the backroom you will never look at gamestop the same. They use a fraction of ebay sold x pricecharting for pricing.
@@redwingdog22 thats exactly what they want you to think. Its a psychology trick. Makes the consumer think they are winning. All the prices go up a week in advance to the 4 for 40 sale.
@@redwingdog22 they change the prices a week before the sale. So in the customers mind they are “winning”. You are still paying regular price just under the ruse you are saving 10$.
Retro stores are sky high, so wouldnt expect ganestop to be any better, these prices on old stuff is crazy, in my childhood theyd have 5 dollars for great ps2 games in thrift shops and such, even cheaper at yard sales, now everyone wants top buck for anything remotely retro, and how consoles treat the players anymore by pricing everything up like online and games made me go pc
Is this really surprising though? All stores do price changes based upon market value/what they think they can get for an item. GameStop is a business, they’re in it for profits, just profits, not for love of games, not for nostalgia, not for any kind of archiving, etc. They’re in it for the money. For me, I never really bank on an item being a specific price until I see that price tag as I’m in the store that day to buy it/see the price on the listing before I click buy online. The idea of buying at GameStop and getting great deals, or buying to flip aren’t really real anymore. GameStop is hurting for money, so they aren’t lowballing or going to allow people to really make money off of them any more. Every item they’re looking to make maximum money on. Thus, the real time price changes, the price altering prior to promotions, the use of the word “retro” to get people in the door, etc. Basically their doing whatever they can for money and to stay in business. Yeah, they’re not a place for collector’s, cause things are now top dollar, but everyone is trying to maximize profits these days. If you watch any UA-cam collector’s videos, one video they’ll be talking about how expensive collecting is, but if you go back a video or two, they’ll be talking about flipping, and how much they can get for that, how they can maximize what they get for it, etc. Everybody feeds into it.
Buy 40 games for $10 or buy a used PC for $400 with at least a 10th generation cpu and a 10 series Nvidia graphics card or better with a catalog of over 200,000 ps3, xbox, xbox 360, psp, wii, DS, n64, and anything called retro games from under the sea ⛵
Gamestop doesn't price any different for CIB mint vs loose poor shape, it's all priced top of market. Luck of the draw for online orders but at least you can return I guess. Not a good service at all.
Other retail stores do the same thing. What's the issue? It's better than game exchange, where they have an increase but don't have it marked on the game, then they sneak the increase and don't say anything.
GameStop's one advantage over mom and pop shops is gone. I saw it coming, but I did not expect them to fumble this hard. It will only be a matter if time before they cancel this retro project.
This is like their at least 4th attempt at doing retro over the last 15 years. Each time it last for only a few months.
