This was a tough video to watch, as I've just managed to turn my beautiful alocasias to mush. Ive killed at least 15 plants in the last 2 weeks. Youve given me hope.
I have my alocasia frydek living in a vase with nutrient solution after taking it out of the soil and it seems to love it. Roots look great, new keep emerging and I can see 5 corms growing as well 😍 I also bought some alocasia frydek var corms and put them in fluval stratum. Within a week they shoot out the roots that are gone absolutely wild. They look very healthy and really strong. I am just waiting to see if they are a variegated ones indeed 😁
Hello from Georgia, U.S.A.!!👋Beautiful Alocasia!! That Alocasia Ebony...😍😍!! All of your plants are beautiful!! I love Alocasia, all of mine are in pon. I just recently did a video on my Alocasia, I have struggled with mine as well. I took them from soil, then to water, then fluval and now pon. Surprisingly they survived all that!!🤣🤣 Anyway, keep up the good work, I really enjoy your videos!!
Hi.. Rare plant lover and I also live in S. Georgia, USA!👋 I would like to trade rooted cuttings if you’re interested. Hoya, Rhipsalis, Tacca, Margravia, etc Happy growing!🌿
What great news Leca Queen! I'm so glad and relieved to watch this video as I haven't thrown them out, and won't, now knowing there's always hope! That Ebony is just gorgeous! 💕
Would you use the long method to rescuse troubled alocasias currently in soil/aroid mix? Doesn't make sense in my mind of they dont like having wet feet. Beautiful plants!
Hi Nora. Thanks so much for your advice. I've been subscribed to your channel since the Gardening Australia story. Quick Question if I may. In this video you mentioned your Wick Set Up. I've looked but I can't seem to find a video on how you do this. Do you have one and if so where might I find it? Thanks in advance, David
Thank you for your support. I use wicks a fair bit but don't think I have a dedicated wick video. Note to self, make one. But I show how I do them in this video: ua-cam.com/video/7YgbmhXzOac/v-deo.html
I purchased a Melo last December and it's growing beautifully... touch wood. Unfortunately, she will only maintain three leaves. The oldest leaf will start to yellow as a new leaf starts growing. Although she acclimated quickly, she may need more humidity, but I don't have a tent or grow cabinet.
I had a love/hate relationship with alocasias. And being a newby to LECA, it frustrated me & i just gave up, though i love the look of the plant. This video comes at the perfect time. I literally picked up a "low rider" for 50% off & figured.....i will try again,..if it does, no great loss of $$$. You are great at crafting your own plant products...have you ever made your own wick pot? Thanks for the great info!
Thanks for sharing!! I am not sure if I have made my own pot, I have fashined a few things and made a diy self watering pot with a wick and water level indicator, is this what you mean? ua-cam.com/video/7QsgDWXm3vw/v-deo.html
Such a learning video. I have a question, I tried to transition philo birkin in leca directly from soil, initially plant got shocked showing yellow leaves and then it stabilised itself however again one of the stem showing rot despite im watering very cautiously maybe 1/5 level of the pot, don't know what's going on. Since I have semi transparent pot I could see only few new roots. I'm thinking to now just take it out from leca removing all roots and propgate it using long method and only once I'm certain plant is strong enough will transfer it to leca, any thoughts on this plan?? Can I revert it now to water proppogation?
Yay, another video! One question, with the wick setup, do you have the pot still sitting in the nutrient reservoir/water anyway, but the wick underneath elevates it somewhat? Or do you have the pot actually seated on something inside the cache pot, with only the wick touching the liquid? That's something I've tried before with various levels of success. You can repurpose a number of items, even just to get the pot 1 cm off of the reservoir. Maybe it seems OCD but... that's how I garden. haha.
Hey, thus, the pot is suspended at the top with the reservoir at the bottom, so the wick goes into the reservoir. That is how I do all my wicks. If the pot can't suspend at the top, I put a raiser at the bottom to create that gap like I did in this video: ua-cam.com/video/7QsgDWXm3vw/v-deo.html
I have a question. Why are the stems to the plant you thought was dead (looks like a Polly) so black? Very beautiful plants. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
Hi Nora, this is awesome, congratulations on finally solving the problem!! yay! :) I have recently come to the same conclusion and put my alocasias in suspended pots above the reservoir instead of letting them stand in it, and have better looking plants now too :) I just have one question. Do you let the water in the reservoir dry out as well, or do you keep water in there at all times? I can't seem to figure this one out :(
@@TheLecaQueen I have one more question, please. Do your alocasias ooze sap all the time? mine do, and I am not sure whether it's ok or not... 🤔 it seems the tips of the leaves are brown :(
Your ebony is gorgeous! 👀 I want one! 🥺 I have only seen the black stemmed ones called elephant ears. They have brighter green leaves. I want the one with dark and thicker leaves. UPDATE: Yeah, so I've ordered an alocasia ebony. I've always wanted a black stemmed alocasia and prior to seeing yours, I only knew of the alocasia black stem, which is an elephant ear and I didn't like the foliage. However, I'm so glad I saw yours because that's exactly what I wanted! I just didn't know it existed until now. So, thanks! 😃👍🏾
Are you using foot candles when you're checking you're a light meter? Because I was looking at the numbers and I want to try to keep mine around the number that was showing in that tent
Nora, can you tell us what your nutrient solution consists of? Also, I put most of my alocasias in pon. A few are in a mixture of pon & leca. They seem to be thriving.
Mine have adjusted to the new leca self watering setup and they’re growing. Im curious why you don’t remove the inflos so the plants can focus on the leaves. Do you pollinate them?
@@TheLecaQueen I know absolutely nothing about inflos. Just curious. I just see people removing them unless they plan to pollinate them. I wont have any for a while because mine are too young. Just like to know what to do 🤷♀️
All are beautiful; but that Ebony impressive……💚💚💚
The ebony is the star!!!

I am sure she will get there. I have found that the more mature a plant gets, the more likely it is to hold on to more leaves.
I really needed this today! Thanks so much! ❤

Nora, do you buy your leca in bulk? And how did you set up your self watering system? Thank-you!
Yes, I buy the big bags of leca. I will do a video about set ups soon.
Loving your videos 👍 Please do a video on how you treat spider mites on alocasias.

The black stem plant is an Ebony, so I guess that may be one of the reasons they called it that, I don't know. I wanna say that is how God made it.

Foliage Focus, find the link in the video description, and yes, all year round.
