Single Leg Takedown For BJJ W/ Gi (Don't Double Butt Scoot)

  • My first experience in grappling was wrestling. In this video I show a wrestling based Single Leg Takedown For BJJ. Along with the basic grip fighting to set it up.
    A single leg takedown works incredibly well in BJJ as long as you understand how to deal with the grips and have a proper setup.
    Also, on a side note. Whether you prefer Judo style or Wrestling style takedowns. Learn takedowns! Even if you're not the best guy with takedowns, learn how to pull someone down to the ground and be offensive from your back. Either way, learning how to start from your feet is really important.
    If you're worried about injuries. I promise, the more you do it, the more comfortable and safe you will be. But staying away from them completely is not a smart idea. Even if you drill but don't do full on rolling with takedowns. That's still good.
    Back to the single leg takedown.
    Nothing is more frustrating for me than seeing the leg right in front of me, but not being able to attack it because I'm tangled up in the gi. So grip fighting is HUGE.
    A part of that grip fighting element is being preemptive with your grips. Establishing your grips fast and not giving your opponent the opportunity to sink theirs in.
    By controlling the grips you will be able to dictate the position. This is always true, not just on the feet.
    Anyways, if you're actually reading this long description. Stop! Watch the video and see a solid single leg takedown for BJJ. The sweep single leg.
    Hope the technique helps!
    Thanks!

    Did this three times in class this morning and worked every time. I don't like shooting for fear of getting choked or getting smashed into turtle. I like this because it creates angels and easily brings the leg of your opponent forward.

    I don't know why people always assume that there are so many gyms that don't really teach takedowns! Actually every BJJ practitioner I ever met trained at a gym that teaches basic takedowns from wrestling and throws from Judo. Of course in the beginning you start on the ground but once you reach several stripes of the white belt and the blue belt most guys are quite okay at takedowns...

    Chewy I’m a big guy like you 6’0 220 and was told that for me shooting in for a double leg is not good because I’m too big and because of that too slow..I was told it’s much easier for me to do single legs, high crotch, ankle picks....what do you think? Love the videos used somethings you’ve shown in rolling.

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  8 років тому +3

      +zonamamuta So not an actual guard pull, just a dude sitting in front of you?
      I may be visualizing something different than you. But my knee jerk reaction is to drive forward and pass the guard as they're sitting down.

      @@Chewjitsu The question for me is why practice techniques which require for their execution a very soft surface? Since I always considered Jiu Jitsu more of a self defense oriented system wouldn't the practice of more sport oriented maneuvers (e.g. buttscoot) take away valuable training time even though I know that they are very effective on the mat?

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  3 роки тому +1

      @@tarquiniussuperbus21 good question. Depends on your goals. I’ve fought in mma before, been in street altercations and I’ve been fine.
      The skills needed to handle most untrained people isn’t all that advanced.
      For those of us who love training. Eventually we get into bjj vs bjj and that’s where all the sport stuff comes from.
      I wouldn’t consider it a waste.
