If anyone's interested... The scar on her leg and the story to go with it are true. It actually happened to the actress, and they decided to write it into the movie.
YOOOO I am so glad y’all watched this 😭 this movie is a huge childhood favourite of mine, and for YEARS I have been checking UA-cam for reaction/commentary videos to it and coming up with nothing. I’m so pleased that the first reaction I saw was from a channel I like, glad y’all enjoyed it too. Also when I was a kid I printed out the full script of Bend it Like Beckham and filmed a reenactment of the movie using my Bratz dolls LMAO
40:46 You left out the reaction to her team mates helping her with the sari and then a complete dead pan reaction to Jules' mum when she saw the girls hugging outside the locker room.
For us Americans, Hounslow is a suburb of London. It’s still accessible on the Tube. Heathrow is close by. It’s one of the towns with a significant population of people of Indian descent. This would be a local team. Pretty solid. Not yet pros.
The way I just screamed in my room seeing that you guys reacted to this!! I haven’t seen this in years upon years. I am so glad you guys have such a diverse channel!!♥️♥️
Thank you so much for taking the time to react to this, barely any on YT which should be a crime. I grew up on this, watched it so many times. Showed it to my friends. Super underrated.
Also fun fact, “Nessun Dorma,” the very famous aria from Turandot that gets used for Jess’ final goal, ends on 3 emphatic “Vinceros!” It’s Italian for “I will win!” I will never forget seeing this in my college movie theater for the first time. The concerned GASPS and “get ups!” that erupted went Jess got hit were hysterical. We were so into it. Then at the end, when Jess initially refuses Joe and it goes to black, we yelled “that’s it!?!… *scene change* “OOH.” It’s really interesting to see how acceptance of women’s sports has changed.
Apparently Gurinder Chadha (the female Indian director who wrote and directed this film) has said later that she really wanted Jules and Jess to be gay, and to have a romance. However, much like Jess in the movie says to Joe 'allowing me to play football is a massive stretch for my family, I can't bring you home as well', she felt like this story was pushing a lot of boundaries with the Indian community at the time, and didn't want people to reject the central premise of the movie (I.e. the football plotline) because they were angered or upset by homosexuality.
Personally I like it better this way anyway. I like the fact that they have tom boyish girls playing a “manly sport” and are really close friendship and they aren’t lesbians. I feel like it would have been incredibly cliché.
@@alarrim29574 Yeah, exactly. Plus wouldn't that defeat the whole storyline of hobbies not equalling sexuality? They straight up say "just bc i wear trainers and love football doesn't mean I'm a lesbian"

We loved this movie in my family- my sister and I were brought up playing soccer, and we watched our VHS of this so many times. Getting to see Mia Hamm play live once was a huge deal to us. I'm honestly a little sad they didn't go for Jess/Jules over Joe, but it's still fantastic. Parminder Negra (Jess) is best known to American audiences for "ER", and the actress who played her sister Archie Punjabi is well known for "The Good Wife", while Jonathan Rhys Myers (Joe) tends to be known for "The Tudors" (as Henry VIII), but he's also memorable for being in "August Rush" with Keri Russell and a young Freddie Highmore- also Robin Williams. Since you mentioned wanting a sequel, I'll share my crack wish that's-never-going-to-happen-but-I'll-repeat-it-in-the-hopes-of-manifesting-it: "Ted Lasso" doing a spin-off about Richmond's women's team and Parminder reprising Jess, as their coach. Since you mentioned seeing Keira in "P&P" (2005) at the start, I'll also echo someone in your comments who recommended "Bride & Prejudice" (2004)- both it and "BilB" were written and directed by Gurinder Chadha, and it's a Bollywood-inspired take (so there are multiple songs) on "P&P". It's not perfect, but it's really enjoyable. (I think the other recommender also mentioned Daniel Gillies, aka Elijah from "TVD", is in it)

There's a clip of Beckham and Posh in the airport singing as they filmed their scene in the airport. The director also discusses filming with them in the dvd commentary.
Best part of the DVD extras is director Gurinder Chadha, her mom and aunt making Aloo Gobi, I'm not a fan of cauliflower but I make it at least once a month after watching the short.

Keira Knightly was good in *King Arthur* (2004), with Clive Owen, Mads Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy, Ray Winstone, Ioan Gruffudd, Ray Stevenson (playing my favorite character in the movie), Stellan Skarsgård, Joel Edgerton, Til Schweiger...holy sh*tski, I forgot what a stellar cast that movie has. And also, an excellent director, Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, The Equalizer, The Replacement Killers). Highly recommend.
Loved this reaction! Just a couple of points for context: 1) a “solicitor” in the UK is a lawyer (trial lawyers are called “barristers” though). A lot of British Indian families place high value on education & academic achievement, and encourage their kids from a young age to pursue careers in law, medicine, dentistry & engineering. So basically Jess’s parents wanted her to become a lawyer. 2) When that girl called Jess a “p*ki”, that is a deeply offensive racial slur, up there with the n-word. Joe could relate to her on some level as during the “troubles” conflict between the Uk (mainly England) and Ireland, Irish people were heavily discriminated against & called slurs as well. 3) the reason they had to go with the same date as the final for the wedding was because Indian weddings are HUUUGE and there are very few venues available that are big enough, so wedding dates are often determined by venue availability. I went to an Indian colleague’s “small” wedding which had 600 guests. It’s common to have over 1000, and festivities last for days. Indian weddings are so much fun, but they really are an endurance sport 😂. 4) more of an observation - since this movie was made, it’s been amazing to see how much the women’s game has grown in the UK. The women’s league is now super popular, they are selling out large stadiums, the players are getting good money (not as good as the boys, but a LOT better) and amazing endorsement deals. The women’s premier league matches are covered in the news & sports pages alongside the men’s. It’s been so great to see the growth!
It's quite sad that this movie really pushed Keira Knightly's career forward, but really didn't do the same for the actress that played Jess (Parminder Nigra)
I love this movie one of my faves as a teen. It's so funny, when youre not raised in that culture you just dont get it. Those over the top reactions are actually so true to real life, like when Jess and Jules were just laughing and got mistaken for kissing, something that small can call off your siblings marriage, playing football as a girl can get you shunned as a family from the community, at that time and sometimes even today. Its so true to what so many of us went through
17:46 UM HELLO??? DID NO ONE CATCH THAT? BRYCE?? WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT?? sir i feel like that was more than just for the movie reaction 😭😭😭 all jokes ofc

Highly recommend.
second this! love this movie!
Rob's british accent 10/10 😂
It was Bryce's imitation of Joe's run for me😭
It's lovely to see a very young Jonathan Rhys Myers in this. He later played Henry the 8th in the "Tudors". ( n he's Irish).
*Love this movie. Found a better love for soccer from this movie.*
Rob doing a British accent 90% of the reaction was my favorite. 😂😂
Thanks to Bryce and Rob! ⚽ Wild to fathom it's been nearly 22 years since I saw in in the cinema. Cheers to writer/director Gurinder Chadha.
This is one of my comfort movies. I absolutely love this movie. ❤ so glad I got to see your reaction to it!
I was so obsessed with this movie when I was younger. So I was really happy that we watched it multiple times in school in english class 😄
Wait, do you guys actually read the entire synopsis--including the ending--on wikipedia before watching the movie?
It's quite sad that this movie really pushed Keira Knightly's career forward, but really didn't do the same for the actress that played Jess (Parminder Nigra)
Bend it Like Beckham was nominated at the Golden Globes - Best Picture Musical/Comedy.
Should have won.
Its so true to what so many of us went through
Jess' sister is the mom in the Hulu show Under The Bridge, made me cry so bad
im swedish and we read this book for my english class and watched this movie lol so fun that you guys are reacting to it
This was a book??
@@grasshopperye3593 if i remember corecctly i think they wrote the book after the movie lol
17:46 UM HELLO??? DID NO ONE CATCH THAT? BRYCE?? WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT?? sir i feel like that was more than just for the movie reaction 😭😭😭 all jokes ofc
Rob just can't resist constantly mimicking the British accent I love it ☠
Great movie and reaction. The actor who played Joe starred as Henry VIII in the series The Tudors. 😎 I hope you took the time to watch the end credits where the cast and crew is singing and dancing to Hot Hot Hot!🕺🏼😉
Omg I fucking love this movie… this film got me into football(soccer) and of course my crush for Jonathan Rhys Meyers 😂😂😂
No football for me but definitely a crush on Jonathan hahaha
No guys, coach isn't gay, he's just European 😅
