Final Fantasy VIII is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square for the PlayStation console. Released in 1999, it is the eighth main installment in the Final Fantasy series. Set on an unnamed fantasy world with science fiction elements, the game follows a group of young mercenaries, led by Squall Leonhart, as they are drawn into a conflict sparked by Ultimecia, a sorceress from the future who wishes to compress time. During the quest to defeat Ultimecia, Squall struggles with his role as leader and develops a romance with one of his comrades, Rinoa Heartilly.
The six main protagonists of Final Fantasy VIII are: Squall Leonhart, a loner who avoids vulnerability by focusing on his duty; Rinoa Heartilly, an outspoken and passionate young woman who follows her heart; Quistis Trepe, an instructor with a serious, patient attitude; Zell Dincht, an energetic martial artist with a fondness for hot dogs; Selphie Tilmitt, a cheerful girl who loves trains and pilots the airship Ragnarok; and Irvine Kinneas, a marksman and consummate ladies' man. All but Rinoa are members of "SeeD", an elite military force based out of futuristic installations called Gardens. Temporarily playable characters include Laguna Loire, Kiros Seagill, and Ward Zabac, who appear in "flashback" sequences; SeeD cadet-turned-antagonist Seifer Almasy; and sorceress Edea Kramer. The main antagonist is Ultimecia, a sorceress from the future who wishes to compress time. Squall and Seifer spar each other while training outside Balamb Garden. Meanwhile, the Republic of Galbadia invades the Dollet Dukedom, forcing Dollet to hire SeeD. The school uses the mission as a final exam for its cadets; with the help of his instructor, Quistis, Squall passes the mission's prerequisite and is grouped with Seifer and Zell. Selphie replaces Seifer mid-mission when the latter disobeys orders and abandons his team. SeeD halts the Galbadian advance; Squall, Zell, and Selphie graduate to SeeD status, but Seifer is disciplined for his disobedience. During the graduation party, Squall meets Rinoa, whose personality is the opposite of his. When assigned with Zell and Selphie to help Rinoa's resistance in Galbadian-occupied Timber, Squall learns that Sorceress Edea is behind Galbadia's recent hostilities. Under orders from Garden, Squall and his comrades-joined by Rinoa, Quistis, and Irvine-attempt to assassinate Edea. During the effort, Squall's party also learns that Seifer has left Garden to become Edea's second-in-command.
At Lunatic Pandora, Squall's team defeats Seifer, rescues Ellone, and kills Adel; Ultimecia possesses Rinoa and begins casting time compression. Ellone sends Squall's team into Ultimecia's era, where she is defeated in a fierce battle before time compression can be fully achieved. A dying Ultimecia travels back in time to pass her powers to Edea, but Squall inadvertently informs Edea of the concepts of Garden and SeeD that she will create.[33] Squall is lost in the flow of time as he witnesses the origins of the game's story, sporadic apparitions of Rinoa, and a faceless portrait of himself. Rinoa manages to find Squall, but he is unresponsive. In the end, a repentant Seifer reunites with Raijin and Fujin, Laguna and his friends visit his lover's grave who turns out to be Raine, who died giving birth to their child, hinted to be Squall. Laguna thinks about the moment when he proposed to her. The SeeD celebrates at Balamb Garden, and it is revealed that Squall did, in fact, survive the time compression. Squall and Rinoa share a kiss under the moonlight.

as much hate as FF8 gets, this was such an epic way to end disc 1. Sorceress Edea kicked major ass. Also the "sorceress theme" you knew something insane was coming.

Well it’s one of my favorites of the series, before the upgraded versions, I agree with the disc 1 ending. I hate how slow the battles were, I didn’t like the draw system either. Other than that, the game was great to me. They did take the fantasy part to a whole new level

I think the first sorceress possessing Edea (when she's wearing that visor and her long hair is lose) isn't Ultimacea, but Adel from a timeline in which she was never released while Ultimacea rules the world below her.
Because of this, at the parade, she actually executes Squall (who, in an instinctive moment, puts himself in front of Rinoa to take that icicle to his chest in her place), leaving a traumatized Rinoa's spirit broken, but with a drive to become stronger, a drive that evolves into obessession, creating the very thing Adel sought to destroy, except this time (because I think that timeline had a loop of its own too that changed a little bit every time Adel tried something different in the past), Ultimacea had a goal that went beyond mere revenge against the world that condemmed her once she got her sorceress powers. She now wished to save the only person who never went after her. The only one who didn't lock her in a room for her safety, but instead gave her actual criticism on how she could improve herself.
So, in the future (in which most her memory is either gone or twisted by the GF she acquired for herself) using that machine, she took control of Edea away from Adel, resulting in the wardrobe change we witnessed, and in a misguided attempt of both securing her own existance and putting Squall away from harm's way, he aims the attack at Squall himself, creating a new timeline and a new loop. The question now however is:
-Was the final scene of her and Squall in the Garden real ? Or was it a fantasy she had, because Squall actually died on her arms at that field, since without most of his memories, he had no real identity to sustain himself ? Needing to see Rinoa one final time simply to be erased in peace ?
@@JabamiLain well, only reason I don’t believe in the squall is dead theory is because when edea came to her senses, She told squall she healed him after the icicle attack.

Well, sorceresses had a bad reputation, and I imagine Seifer still had some dormant protective instincts for his matron, hence the knight fantasy. Can you blame him ? Of all simp villains, he made the most sense to me.

The genius foreshadowing here is well hidden in plain sight. Irvine, a well known marksman, struggles with this one target of importance and even seems THANKFUL he didn't get a killshot.....
When you find out who Edea truely is and Irvine's history, it all makes sense.
@@scruffyraisin The ending really sells it, Irvine is one of the first ones to greet Edea and Cid at the party and treat them with love and respect unlike his usual aloof self, effectively his adoptive mom and dad. No wonder he couldn't take the shot most likely to kill her, he's the only one that can remember her.
Then why did Irvine join the battle only 10 minutes after his shot?

I remember playing this on psone. I had a game shark and instantly leveled everything to max stats. Thought it'd make for intense battles but I just breezed through the game. Limit breaks every single turn.

Irvone choking made no sense at all. Such a plot hole. To remedy that and forshadow that horroble plot reveal at the basketball court on disc 2 Irvine shoulda said "I cant do it ok!!?" (Under his breath) "she rasied us"
Which wouldve made no sense to the player at that moment but would've made sense after the plot reveal on disc 2 (which I still hate and felt the game didn't even need)
