Just charge 40 dollars for a salad and everybody is gonna think your restaurant is super exclusive. Not even kidding in the book they pay about 400 - 500 dollars every time they meet for dinner and are even surprised that the bill is so low.
The laughter was probably Batemans imagination, he couldn't deal with being told no, so in his mind it seemed just as shameful as having them laugh at him.

When he asks what he does for a living she says he’s the head chef at some restaurant. Patrick scoffs and asks which one. She replies Dorsia and in that moment Patrick has a mental out of body experience of rage and jealousy that is absolutely hilarious.
It's his ex girlfriend, and the way he murders her is beyond brutal. The movie is straight up PG-13 compared to the book, I had to put it down after he had his way with her in the book.

Dorsia is one of the great unseen presences in the history of film, kind of like "Mitch and Murray" in Glengarry Glen Ross - constantly name-dropped by the characters, its near-unattainable reservations a perpetual source of conflict and posturing, the restaurant exists in an almost mythical realm and is never actually seen on the screen. Leo didn't have a 80s yuppie face, you couldn't see him as a Harvard biz graduate wall street shark. He was an innocent looking hot young guy with blond hair and green eyes. Bale on the other hand, could look like a psychopath just in general. Let's not forget, later in their characters bale continued to be able to act in dark characters while Leo has been playing either a smiling or a struggling/underdog character. Him playing a bad guy was only possible in a Tarantino world and even then he had to change his acting several times to finally accepting the evilness of a slave master plantation owner. Bale beats his wife, he can play a psychopath, he has slight capability :P
He goes to Dorsia in the book with Jean. Because he can't get a table, he impersonates a name he saw on the reservation book and cons the Maitre'd. The rest of the scene is fucking hilarious, but I won't spoil it for you and everyone else by telling it here.

I wish the film included the scene in the book where it is revealed that Patrick’s younger brother Sean actually is a VIP patron at Dorsia, much to the annoyance of our favorite yuppie psycho killer 😂

Dorsia is the “Holy Grail”, it’s what we’re all reaching for despite our financial situation, rich or poor, we’re all reaching for something ‘more’ that just always seems to be out of our reach….In my opinion, I think the point of dorsia is to say, we already have what we need! We don’t need something that will only give us ‘status’ to outside circles, enjoy our inner circles of friends and family! On your death bed, you won’t think of the wealth you’ve accumulated, instead you’ll think of those you love!
I think there are a lot more problems than human pleonexia to worry about. We have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.

We don’t need something that will only give us ‘status’ to outside circles, enjoy our inner circles of friends and family! On your death bed, you won’t think of the wealth you’ve accumulated, instead you’ll think of those you love!

I think there are a lot more problems than human pleonexia to worry about. We have to end apartheid for one. And slow down the nuclear arms race, stop terrorism and world hunger. We have to provide food and shelter for the homeless, and oppose racial discrimination and promote civil rights, while also promoting equal rights for women. We have to encourage a return to traditional moral values. Most importantly, we have to promote general social concern and less materialism in young people.
