    What I think: Make the playable characters' movesets almost identical to sonic's but with a few different abilities that change up the gameplay(so basically like 3&K)

      Yeah, like make all playable characters able to get from Point A to Point B, like Sonic, but instead of them having the boost, they get different abilities, like Tails has his flight, and Knuckles has his gliding and punching

      @@mistahjorge3383 precisely! I think it's still better to only have a 3-4 primary-character cast (others could still have cameos and even short gimmick segments to help out), but you could even have characters team up for specific levels.

    At this point, the best way to fix multiple playable characters is to actually have multiple playable characters. It’s sad that we’ve been stuck without them for most of the series’ life at this point.

      I agree it's been so long we've played with anyone except sonic, and i'm not couting shadow in forces he was just a sonic reskin. I always loved playing with different characters and playstyle cause that made sonic interesting for me, like sonic team theme in heroes said " everyone can do something special" sad that sega competely ignored this message and now no one matter besides sonic. Hope Frontiers changes this

      I wish that was the case. Throwing characters at the wall doesn't make for a good game. They need to be crafted to fit in the game. I actually like fishing minigsmes and full titles, but Big's mechanics were abysmal. The problem is the "throw things at a wall and see what sticks mentality" tends to diminish the core gameplay loop.

      For real. Even if it's just the "original 3". I mean damn how hard is it to do Tails and Knuckles? Same exact mechanics as were used in SA1 for Tails, or SA1 or 2 for Knuckles. At this point, every game should have OPTIONAL playable Tails, Knuckles, Mighty Ray, Amy, and maybe Shadow. Hell, make them unlockable for replay value. At bare minimum, Tails should be able to be fanboating around behind Sonic a la Sonic 2/3/3&K style.

    You made some good points. Furthermore, many characters in the franchise have similar speed to Sonic, meaning other playable characters' gameplay wouldn't break up the pace. You could esentially allow the player to replace Sonic with Shadow, Metal Sonic or Blaze in many instances, giving the player more choice.

    Here's the plan
    1.make a game where you can play as any character and no matter who you choose the story sticks with the same objective,there can be branching paths for the characters playable,for example tails has his own route based on his abilities, plus you can add collectibles along the way and no matter what character you choose you'll still be able to get that collectable with a specific way to get it,for example,sonic speeds threw a closing door,tails Flys and climbs platforms to a pillar,knuckles has to treasure hunt for a lil bit of time to get the collectable and for amy she can use her cards to help her track it down,plus open world would be perfect for it

      @@Eldoofus yeah. She could do that in Sonic 06 for some unexplained reason. Maybe It's because of her cards or something. In my headcanon, Espio teached her how to become invisible so she can defend herself better.

    As someone who grew up in the Adventure era, I truly miss having different playable characters with different play styles: yes, they were flawed at times, but after having boost to win forced down my throat for the past decade and some change, I am already to have multiple playable characters back.
    And I also agree with your point, Matt: multiples playable characters placed in the game the way they did it in '06 would make a lot of sense, we just need Sega to be willing to step out of the "comfort zone" they place themselves in and try to bring back multiple playable characters

    I agree that this approach is a really good idea. In theory, that is...
    The constant backlash from Sonic's failures, all the unneccesary hate, fear, and cynicism, and everyone constantly learning the wrong lessons among other things stand as to why things are how they are now. It's all disheartening and I can't help but be sad.
    The comics, fan material, and even the movies show Sonic can come out on top, so why must the game topic be so...controversial?
    Can't we just have one game that doesn't fuel all this sadness? I love Sonic, and I just want him to do well.

      The issue is the games bring out the worst in folks between the divisions in fandom and the bad blood between Sega US Vs Sega JP, it's pretty much a miracle Sonic Maina did so well in retrospect (albeit you could technically classified it as a fan project).
      Ofc there are those who hate Maina but it's still (overall) the best Sonic game we've gotten since Sonic Generations.

    I personally think a better option is to do the same thing with games like S3&K and Mania, where the other characters played almost the exact same as Sonic, but they had unique abilities exclusive to those characters. I think what made this work so well in the classics was the level design. For the most part, the characters would go through the exact same levels, but depending on the character, you can go through different routes, and that's one of my favorite things about S3&K and Mania. Playable characters played similarly to Sonic, but with a different ability and it made for great level traversal, such as Tails's flight capability giving him access to higher routes or Knuckles being able to go through a lower route by punching through a wall only he can break. This, in my opinion, is how multiple playable characters should be handled in future Sonic games.

      Yes to all of this and is my theory in how they could make a better game with multiple characters (because as fun as it is to play as Sonic in his speed-based levels, if that's all you've got, you just have another rehash of 90% of Forces. Very short, little replay value, and stagnant level design)
      Rather than a huge cast of 6 (or 12 in Heroes case) with near identical mechanics/stages, or 3 very wildly different characters with brief cameo gimmicks (as in '06), we need a middle ground with 3-4 characters with mostly similar play-styles to Sonic but with slightly different abilities navigation and combat abilities, allowing for overlapping level designs that are still uniquely designed for each one based on their skills.
      Some perfect love-child of S3&K/Mania, Rush, SA2, and '06 (because Sonic games still need/deserve a plot that, while not strictly adult, still takes itself seriously with real, threatening, and/or tangible consequences.

      @@benjamincounter931 oh, I'm definitely not giving Forces any of my good graces, just saying that most of the levels (especially MSonic's) were very cut and dry, but particularly because of the spamable and broken boost-based gameplay. While visually unique, mechanically, all his stages are very cookie-cutter or had interesting sections that were entirely skipable with boosting...

    I honestly think that 3&K and Mania are the best examples of playable characters. They run through the same stages as Sonic with the goal of reaching the end and share the same base moveset, but additional abilities such as Tails' flight and Knuckles gliding grant players access to different routes that most players can only reach with them. This approach provides variety without breaking pace and rewards exploration and experimentation. Essentially, they act as optional, different ways to go fast and use that speed to reach new areas, which is my favorite thing in Sonic games. Also, I miss playing as Tails. He's my favorite character.

      @@lynxfresh5214 Yeah, I really like the artstyle of Advance. As a Sonic fan I find myself on this weird middle ground where I prefer much of the storytelling of the Adventure games but I prefer the gameplay and level design of the 2D titles.

    as someone who loved the extra playable character/styles its sad to see them no longer return. I'm a sonic fan through and through and there hasn't really been a style of gameplay i haven't enjoyed. the only exception to this is big but thats just bc i never beat sa1 as a kid bc of it. i will admit that some styles of playing are momentum killers and sonic is all about going fast but i like the multiple perspectives that other characters provide like in sa1/2. or even just in sonic 3 & knuckles despite there being no dialog you can still get both sides of the story. i like the side scrolling gameplay more but its also satisfying to boost through levels as modern sonic even though i wish his stages were more like sa1. i liked the werehog stages in unleashed even tho there were long and tedious it sparked my interest in the hack & slash genre and it was just a nice bit of variety bc the boost levels get boring after a while. i would like for playable characters to come back but if doesn't happen idc as long as sega makes a quality product that i can have some fun with

      I agree! I think that the multiple perspectives on the story of the different playable characters offer more depth to the story and also the different gameplay styles offer a good amount of variety to the game as well. I would like to see the multiple playable characters to return in a future Sonic game as well! A huge reason why I like the Sonic adventure games, Sonic heroes and Sonic 06 are the multiple playable characters honestly.

    The problem is that no matter what, people are gonna complain. Games are not made to please everyone. We’ve been having non playable characters for more than a decade. Even Iizuka is saying he wants another Adventure game. Instead of trying to please everyone, how about just give the people that want a game like Sonic Adventure their game. Sega shouldn’t have to compromise so they won’t “offend” the people that never liked the style to begin with. Don’t like playable characters? Pick another Sonic game.

      @Welp Alienate the fans they have been gathering for years. Didn't they do that when making Unleashed (for gameplay) & Colors (for story)? Frontiers is already confirmed to be different from what we got in the 2010s.
      Giving the Adventure Fans their own game similar to what Mania was for Classic Fans would have the opposite effect. Rather than alienating long time fans it would give more fans what they want from the series. Not sure why you're so opposed to this 1 More Game after all these years when Mania did it & was considered the best Sonic Game to release during the 2010s.

    I think this is why i prefer adventure 1 over 2 a little more, you are able to play all of sonics levels without interuption and then you could change it up and play the other stories whilst adventure 2 is having you jump from high speed platforming to treasure hunting and to mechs and high speeds all over again, there was little consistency in the type of gameplay you would have to complete. Never thought about it that way untill now.

    Frontiers was the perfect game to bring back playable characters. Imagine gliding in the open world as Knuckles. With the open world there really is no way for a character to break a level. As for cyberspace idk but in the open world I think it would be perfect.

    Ever since 06 and the “sOniC sTuPid fRiEndS” argument, Sega has been unwilling to make other characters playable. If this changes however, I would want for the other to have their own unique moveset and not just be clones of Sonic

    There're even better examples of how other characters can be implemented: Sonic 3K and Mania, Sonic 2 and the Advance games to a lesser extent. All of them have the same core gameplay, with a unique feature that makes them stand out. It's not just a 2D thing either, as even games such as Sonic robo blast 2 showed that it works great in 3D. Most games, in general, have that kind of approach to multiple playable characters.

    I think they could do it the way it was done in sonic 06 or how the classic games handled them. Make going through stages with someone else optional. You can play sonic 3 without playing knuckles or tails at all. So people cant complain that the extra characters are there. If u dont like them dont select them

    I absolutely agree with you, I think 06 handled it greatly, I wanna bring up Rouge's part in P-06 when you have to find the keys, If they can implement that into More stages more fluidly then I think It would be great, BEcause I know some people would miss those playstyles, and maybe mid stage tails could pop up in a mech and Help sonic destroy an obstacle, I am open for more input and would love a great discussion with my fellow Sonic fans

    I think the best way to have playable characters is the SA1 style: multiple characters with their own stories and gameplay and if you just want to play as sonic, you can just play as Sonic. Of course, SA1 isn’t perfect and needs to be tweaked here and there, but other than that.
    As a side note: the first playable character was in Sonic 2, where you can go to options and choose Sonic&Tails, Sonic only, and Tails only(except you can’t fly). Sonic 3 just improved on Sonic 2.

    so… kinda like the friend missions in sonic generations? With tails you make summon him and fly for a bit, amy gives you a larger jump when you time it right, etc. they act more as gimmicks in the mission rather than an entirely new style of gameplay

    Sonic 2 was actually the first Sonic game with multiple playable characters because you could play as Tails, he just didn't have and special abilities that made him unique from Sonic in the original release. Also you really should have thrown in more words like "multiple", "other", or "separate" whenever you said "playable characters" because there were a lot of times when you said "playable characters" in this video that actually sounded like the games shouldn't have any characters period, not even Sonic, which can get really confusing for some people with how it was worded.

    I loved multiple playable characters, but I understand why Sonic Team feels scared to do it. I do agree with you in 1:54 as every time they’ve been implemented as of late, people have been complaining about them ruining the pace of the game. I do think 2D Sonic has been more consistent with alternate gameplay styles as I don’t see many people complain about them. I would love them to return to 3D, but I don’t know if they’ll be implemented well. I hope my experience here gets better with you as I said in the community post as I feel left out. I know nobody cares about that, so you probably don’t want to hear my talk about this. Anyways, good video as always. Best wishes to you, fam! :)

      Just Sonic Mentality plagues the Boost Games, it's just insulting to the excellent cast of characters to be unable to play as them except in Spinoffs, especially when we are playing as 2 Different Sonics. Considering how long it's been (21 Years) I wouldn't mind slowing down to play as characters like Tails, Cream, or Silver & raise Chao again.

    This is what I've been trying to say about Sonic and his friends for awhile. It's annoying that people think Sonic fans are indecisive on whether having Sonic's friends playable is a good or bad thing. The reality is, that they would be great to have back, but not handled like they were in Adventure 1&2 (basically like you said in the video).
    My dream 3D Sonic game would be one where any would work level interchangeably with any character. Imagine being able to unlock a free play mode where you can play on any stage with any character and have alternate routes that are accessible by certain characters. (Basically, it's what 3&K and Mania did).

    It's literally been 16 years since anyone but Sonic has been playable in the mainline games. I don't want to keep playing JUST Sonic because it makes him seem that he's the only character actually doing anything in the stories.

    Imma have to hard disagree saying that shadow and silver suffer from adventure 1/unleashed syndrome
    Shadow plays basically just like sonic but with an extra Spice of combat
    So the quality between both of those stories is consistent.
    As for silver he is a bit slower , yes . But he also follows the same objectives and there are specific segments with . Blaze
    Shadow and sonic in his story
    To conserve that fast paced plataforming action
    So I say that 06 has the best individual character stories as well as an built in . Auto character switch mechanic for specific sections

    I like the classic approach more, where it's the same levels and gameplay but with different stats and movesets. In Mania (which I don't consider a classic game, more a classic-styled game) for example every character plays the same levels (except Knuckles, who has an exclusive version of Act 1 in Mirage Saloon, but otherwise his stuff's the same as everyone else's) but they each have access to different paths and abilities: Sonic can drop dash, Tails can fly, Knuckles can glide and climb, Mighty can ground pound and is immune to spikes while curled up, and Ray basically has the Cape Feather with rocket boosters attached.

    I liked playing as the other Sonic characters because of the variety. I see why SEGA felt that they might have to back peddle a bit...but you know what would of been good? Too actually find a way to implement the same level of quality that they put in the sonic stages. Like they used to do.

    I also like the way Sonic 06 managed different playable characters, but my favorite way this is tackled will always be the classic games, all characters have their own individual files that you can complete 100%, and they all go through the same levels, maybe with some changes (like Knuckles' own paths), but I understand this is difficult to accomplish on a 3D environment

    Ugh... I've already spoken in length about this (stupidly) "controversial" topic, simply put either have multiple playable characters in future mainline Sonic games OR leave them out completely (E.g; no cheerleaders) and just keep it Sonic.
    I refuse to buy a single new Sonic game that has Tails, Knux, Amy, etc but sidelines them to being NPCs or helpless villain fodder.

    I wouldn't call the Avatar a sonic without a boost

    Here's how I think multiple playable characters should be brought back in Sonic games. Firstly, I still think that the other characters should get their own levels. However, they would mostly be identical to Sonic albeit with some changes and some abilities of their own. Sonic would still be the fastest but the other characters would still be fast-paced. The levels would also have the same objective: get from point A to B. However, giving each character their own levels allows you to build the levels around their abilities while still keeping gameplay fast paced. For example, Tails' levels would still be fast-paced, but would evolve a lot more vertical movement and action and Tails would actually be stronger in the air than Sonic, the same way Knuckles would be better in ground combat. Still, every character is fast and has the same basic abilities like homing attack, etc...

      You could also very easily use this to develop overlapping level designs in 3D environments with skill-limiting obstructions, similar to the blocked paths in S3&K that only Knuckles could break, many of which were placed in spots that also prevented Knuckles from being able to follow Sonic/Tails' divergent path. Sonic/Knuckles can't figure out how to work technology gadgets or how to get through small spaces, but Tails can. Sonic can rail grind faster or launch off downhill ramps further than Tails/Knuckles. Knuckles can break large obstacles or sense/use mystical artifacts that the other 2 can't.

    I actually have another idea for how to handle playable characters!
    Take the 2D Sonic approach and apply it to the 3D gameplay style. What I mean is with games like Sonic 3, Advance, and Mania, for example, you go through the exact same adventure and stages as Sonic, but the thing is, IT'S COMPLETELY OPTIONAL. The problem comes entirely from forcing players to play as every character to 100% the game, but in an ideal scenario, you only need to beat the game as one character. The level design being a lot more open and exploration based with multiple branching pathways would also lend kindly to this philosophy. I definitely agree with the idea of every character having similar controls to Sonic, but different abilities to make the characters stand out. The problem was never multiple playable characters, but rather how they were implemented. If they're simply treated as another way to play the game, rather than a requirement, it opens the possibilities for people being more accepting of different playstyles. Tails could fly and use his Tail Swipe, Knuckles could glide, climb, and punch, Amy could use her hammer and acrobatics, etc. But they still have the same overall physics that Sonic does. That would be how I would approach multiple playable characters.
    TLDR: Multiple playable characters should be optional alternative ways to beating the game, as opposed to being forced on people. Make the levels more open with branching pathways so that they are functional for every character. In other words, Sonic Advance in 3D.

    I just hope that maybe sonic frontiers could have different characters maybe as DLC or in game after unlocking them. Like for DLC, it could have Tails,Knuckles,Shadow,Amy,possibly Silver and possibly Blaze. And they have their own move sets but still fast like sonic or maybe their own stats. It's all up to sonic team but I do think they should could come back as a form like that sonic heroes point.

    I am curious that if the Open World Formula works and they bring out a Frontiers 2 style game, if they will add the other characters as gimmicks for Sonic to use. I mean, alot of characters have special, unique skills that could be used. Tails to fly really high, Knuckles could destroy barriors, Amy using her tarrot cards to point towards collectables, Shadow to give an extra speed when running (Shadow essentially challenges Sonic to a race at the press of a button) Blaze burns stuff and Silver can move far of puzzle objects towards you, maybe some of them even have combat uses, like Omega having an AOE attack and such. Would be interesting if something like this get's explored in the future, but for now I want to see if the open world stuff in Frontiers even works before anything.

    I think the reason the playable character feature worked in the original games was you still had a fast paced game with the same goals…but you could play it as Knuckles, who had the advantage of being able to climb but the disadvantage of a lower jump. But it still felt very much like a Sonic game to play.

    Personally, variety is one of my favorite aspects of “Dark Ages” and Adventure Era Sonic. Maybe it’s not a popular opinion, but it’s one of the things I loved about the series. I also really liked Knuckles’ more exploration focused gameplay. I’d definitely want some of the characters to get spinoffs that lean more into what makes them unique. Silver and Tails are two characters that I feel could have fun spinoffs by doing more with the Tails Adventure and Sonic 06 gameplay styles of each character. Knuckles’ treasure hunting could also fit well in a game, but it may need to be fleshed out more and further developed to stand on its own, IMO

    I have very similar feelings about how playable characters should be handled. At the core, the other playable characters need to be just as fun as Sonic is and there should be consistency between all of them in terms of control. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is a great example of this. I really want to play as the other characters again, but I also want to have just as fun or even more fun than I do when I play as Sonic.

    Simplest answer: make them optional! Or if they're making an open world game, then utilize the other character's abilities like Tails' flying and Knuckles' gliding, climbing and digging to explore areas that Sonic can't get to.
    I just don't understand why people seem to think that this is so taboo! It really does feel like the only reason why Sonic's friends aren't playable is because whiners are always whining "WAAHH, I DON'T WANNA PLAY AS SONIC'S STINKY FRIENDS, GET RID OF 'EM, REEE!" Honestly, why do these kinds of people deserve to be catered to, and actual positive fans are all but ignored?

    As much as I love the playable characters and the different games, I do very much agree with those ideas that you have presented. I think that if they had to be done to appeal to as much of the audience as possible that doing it in those ways or in some variation of it will bring it more success.

    Hard disagree. I much prefer dedicated levels, different gameplay and quirky objectives when possible. I guess it's a balancing act though since the "only Sonic" folks would have complaints. Even still, I'd enjoy the Classics or Heroes approach over the 06 approach. The fact that you get such a short time with them, that they're shafted into some small corner of a stage (that may be too long in its own right) and that you're unable to boot up the game and play as them right away (since you'd need to reach that specific part of a level... and remember if they were in that level) makes them feel too inconsequential-- like you said, just as a stage gimmick. Sorry Matt.

      Honestly no offence to Matt but after looking at this video a bit more this video kind of pisses me off a bit mainly due to stuff like Matt assuming EVERYONE Liked the sonic levels over anything else
      And the whole breaking the pacing thing doesn’t work for all of the characters because if we look at sonic 1 all the way to even some games now they’re about having a consistent uninterrupted flow and even some of the bad gameplay styles like some of the characters from 06 still allow you that of course not All of them are winners Big the cat definitely doesn’t work but the idea that we can’t have alternate gameplay styles that are different to sonic purely because they apparently “ruin the game’s piecing” just seems like a load of bull
      Not to mention if the other styles have a lower quality just expand upon them remove some of the fat and just make it more fun
      And to be honest I don’t pay attention to the people who just wanna play as sonic purely because a lot of them don’t actually try to engage with the other styles and then go with their brains “when can I play as sonic when can I play as sonic” effectively making them hate the other characters because they make it feel like fat purely because they don’t want to engage

    Shadow ability : using his shoes to fly for a while and he can fire chaos spear
    Knuckles ability : able to climb like normal and his new ability going to the ground for a short period
    Tails ability : he will be the slowest character he flies but has a bar you can recover it by getting rings and he has those Tails attacks where he uses his tail to do those so yep
    Cream ability : she can use her Chao to help her slaughter enemies by tricking the enemies into die by some smart ideas
    Amy ability : Her Hammer.
    Rogue ability : she can go invisible since he is very sneaky in sonic x she uses this and she can fly but only for a period
    Sliver ability : manipulates items like robots to crush other robots like in sonic generations his boss fight is based on that he has a bar he can recover it by hitting enemies his ability lets him fly but it will drain his bar so bad

    I disagree that Forces has been a failure in terms of playable characters. I think it has the best approach to other gameplay styles. They are all speed based platforming and they are different enough, there are alternate paths for different Wispons. Just like in classics. It could be better: Classic Sonic should be other character and on replays everyone should play every stage. But it was the best among 3D mainline games (non-mainline Black Knight wins).

    This is by no means directed towards you specifically, but.. can we PLEASE stop showing that clip of Elise kissing Sonic _every time_ we want a shorthand for why "Sonic 06 is bad"? It just doesn't work in any kind of *serious* discussion, and it's incredibly off-putting to watch so many UA-camrs use that moment to show why the game is irrefutably terrible, while they simultaneously come forward and say that "X,Y, and Z are the ONE thing 06 did right" (be it Shadow & Silver's characterization, the music, the playable roster, the stage concepts, the presentation of the CGI, etc.). Obviously the game was still flawed, but it should also be clear by now that the discussion simply does NOT end with how people feel about Elise or that scene, nor is it enough to disregard 06 as a whole. So can we can we just.. treat it with the nuance it deserves and stop pretending like game is indefensible? Or can't be praised?
    I mean, it's been *15 years.* We've gotten far, FAR worse game releases than 06 ever was (both in _and_ out of the franchise), and people have had more than enough time to look back on the game with clarity. Simply saying you don't like the "KiSs" doesn't prove that the game itself is terrible. At best, it's the equivalent of pointing out a single mistake in the story's direction. I mean, what is the implication even supposed to be? That this one moment should be enough to show that 06's writing is horrible without question? Like.. of course not, lol. Unless you wanna say that it negates the writing for _every other scene_ in the game (including the universally praised characterization of Shadow), then you can't use that moment as an abbreviation for why the game is bad, even writing wise. Because it'll never be the end of the conversation.
    So can we just have an honest, openminded talk about what 06 got right _without_ the unnecessary (and often shallow) backhanded comments? That's all I'm asking for. You don't _need_ to apologize for praising the game, or constantly reaffirm that it sucks when you want to point out something good. And all the people who can't be bothered to hear you out JUST because you're not hating on it in some way, probably aren't worth talking to in the first place.

    Sonic frontiers chances of having multiple characters playable is low, You have sonic that is trapped in a Island so some characters may be absent for this, But there you have Big in frontiers but you will not play as big as it looks like because you are fishing as sonic for some reason, It looks like frontiers takes options from other characters to sonic only. and the way how frontiers looks like sonic will be playable only unless there’s some shadow DLC like how forces did it, But as how much I think of another character playable besides sonic I still doubt for any other playable characters to be in frontiers

    With this method. You could have the whole cast playable with little issue.
    Sonics main playstyle can be cloned to Espio, Shadow, Amy and Blaze.
    Knuckles to Rouge, and Vector
    Tails to Cream and Charmy.
    The only oddballs are Big and Omega

    It’s amazing how Sonic has such a great and diverse cast and yet people hate them and think they shouldn’t be a thing, yet Mario 2 and 3D World had the same cast and it worked perfectly with the game, but I would like to see Sonic’s cast have a closer relation to the main speed and not ruin the pacing without overthrowing the style balance

      I don't think it's that at all. Playable characters have been a thing since Sonic 2, and even in the beginning of the 3D era playable characters in the Sonic games were still praised. It wasn't hated till much later on in the 3D Era and even then it was moreso about the execution of it that left a lot to be desired( see Sonic 06 for prime example).

Everyone else still had platforming even Amy and Gamma( despite Amy being the slowest) because it still played like something you'd expect for a Sonic game, unfortunately big doesn't it.

    I think something that would be cool in an open-world environment would be the ability to call in other characters like Tails and Knuckles as support, or to use their abilities to traverse the terrain or to fight enemies using their abilities, all while playing as Sonic, and having the characters on a cooldown. It might even be fun to be able to switch to the characters at will while they're active.

    I think they should do like sonic 3 with a hint of adventure 1 so you can choose whoever you want, the final story unlocks right after you finish one story so you can't force people to play most of the game but the other characters don't just show up for five minutes then get lost

    As a kid I played sa2 and HATED knuckles and rouge and only wanted to play the speed and mech but when I replayed the game again this year I absolutely loved knuckles and rogues gameplay, I found it as a nice break from the high adrenaline and epic feeling speed and mech stages. I think it's because as a kid I found it too slow and complicated but me now and me then are completely different people and I appreciate the slow and simple things in life a lot more than younger me. I went on a bit of a detour there so I'll summarise with the knuckles stages are playable and I would buy a spin off which is just that

    Even as far as S3K, multiple playable characters are just an extension of Sonic's gameplay. Forces tried to imitate that (playable characters are Sonic, Sonic with a boost, and Sonic without a boost) but failed horribly with the level design and just classic Sonic in general. Modern Sonic aside since we already know the potential of the boost from Unleashed, the Avatar has the potential to experiment with new fast paced platforming sequences with the grappling hook and weapons (stop using wisps) but the level design still leaves much to be desired.
    As for the returning cast of characters, the problem is that there aren't dedicated platforming stages designed for them. SA1 reuses its levels quite often and for the most obvious part Tails breaks every Sonic stage he's in because he can fly out of bounds. In 06 each character gets a dedicated platforming section and it's not hard to understand why it has the best execution, it's because they have actual platforming levels tailored for them.

    I think that using 06's character system would probably bother the people who complain about characters more than adventure. Basically 06 makes it so you have to play the gameplays you probably don't like in Sonic's levels. I personally like it, but I also like playing the slower characters as well so it was never an issue for me. I guess the only solution I can think of would be to make their playstyles as fun as sonic's, like tails from adventure 1 but with levels built for it.
    I feel like it's one of those things which you are gonna love or hate. To me, having all the playstyles makes the game feel like it's staying interesting so I think they should definitely try to bring it back in one way or another.

    I love alternate playable characters in any way they are added(Assuming they are actually fun to play and have substance. And yes, that is throwing Heroes out, because the diffrent teams are basically the same triple-moveset with some meh-tier modifications. That just lacks substance). However, I have to admit that they are at their best when they share the same goal Sonic has of reaching a goal-location and beating simple bosses. I have nothing against diffrent mission goals, but it sorta integrates itself more neatly when the diffrence in gameplay is how the game plays, rather than what it is about.

    I don't know the first Sonic adventure game I love the playable characters and story and big never ruined the game for me for one his campaign is really short so it never bothered me and Sonic adventure 2 playable characters was fun and the story was even better than the first game. People complain about the radar system in adventure 2 back then Sonic Team wanted Sonic games to not be too easy Sonic adventure 2 introduce the ranking system if the emerald radar was like the first game then it would make getting a A rank too easy. There's a reason tons of fans want a Sonic adventure 3 and it's not cause we only like the speed stages we love the different play styles otherwise Sonic adventure 3 with just speed stages wouldn't be a Sonic adventure game it should just be called something else. Great video no hate lol. I love your videos been subscribed since you use to have only a few thousand subs.

      Agree with everything you said, but I still think they could've kept the radar the same from SA1. Stages were already made bigger and hint system already made more cryptic rather than Tikal just saying "This waaay!" so difficulty would've been increased enough just from those changes. As for A rankings, could've always been tweaked harder (if it seemed too easy when making the game) for the trade-off of SA1 radar, right? I dunno. All I know is people threw such a fit over the radar change and with some shmucks taking 10+ minutes on multiple stages, I can understand the complaints... even if I personally enjoy vibing in those stages for a while myself.

    I think Sonic 3 & Knuckles handled alternate characters the best. They all kept the core gameplay the same, but were different enough to be worth playing. You could also never play them if you wanted to and still experience the entire game. Bringing back playable characters in that way could cause problems with the narrative of some games, but it might be a nice non-canon unlockable. Ultimately, I do not think multiple characters need to come back, but they'd certainly be welcome if they don't take away from the focus of the game, like in Adventure

    I think the main reason people pushed those characters playstyles away is because too many of them were too far removed from the core gameplay that people come to expect from sonic. Think back to sonic 3, in that game each character expanded off of the same build in a different way, but were still different enough to warrant a different character, but when they are completely different genres like big, or sa2 tail, or silver or the werehog, it makes sense why people would be mad there are other games in their sonic game, regardless of the quality of those playstyles.

    If sega knew how to Gauge characters speed they'd be fine
    Shadow should be damn near as fast as sonic but with chaos abilities
    Tails doesn't have super speed but he's an accelerator which is why he can keep up with sonic to a point. Tails also throwing projectiles like heroes along with flying is great versatility
    Knuckles is slower than Tails but still not slow but can make up for slowness with combat abilities
    Silver can keep up with sonic and shadow but flinging himself with telekinesis. He can even fly backwards in front of sonic charging at him knocking debris back
    Blaze is almost as fast as sonic and shadow but can make up with her fire abilities
    It's pretty obvious they want everyone to be fast so if they do their research on their own games they'll know which characters can fit the criteria at least somewhat. No need to fully change game play mechanics if you do it right

    I hate to be that guy, but you completely overlooked how Classic Sonic handled playable characters! It's entirely possible to make a 3D Sonic game with multiple playable characters, and have the pacing main level objective stay consistent across all characters. Heck, if you really wanted to shake it up, you could give the characters different paths to take (or even different levels entirely, a la Sonic Adventure) that are specifically tailored to each character's abilities.

    I can understand that most people prefer playing as Sonic. After all he is the main character of these stories. If I'm being honest I prefer they mixed things up once in a while. I always did enjoy Sonic adventures as well as Sonic adventures two. During the time when they introduced Shadow the hedgehog. It was very exciting to know that he wasn't the only hedgehog in town. I'm not saying they should have playable characters for every new game. If I'm being honest just like Sonic colors. They could try to bring back some of the game that were quite popular.

    Sega really dropped the ball with the lost world parkore system because they could have given that to Knuckles since he can scale walls and move upwards and traverse the level much easier.

    I still hope we get “spin-off”/side Sonic series that revolves other characters.
    Tails: continuation of Tails Adventure
    Knuckles: Open World Collectathon
    Shadow/Team Dark: Adventure like games
    Silver: Expanded 06 gameplay

    Turning the different characters into level gimmicks honestly sounds worse than having them just not be playable at all. If were gonna go that route then just keep the Wisps, don’t turn all these characters into glorified power-ups (or do, at least then I might have the option to call on them whenever I want rather than being forced to use them for a small section of the level.)
    Personally I have no issue the the Adventure games alt characters save for Big and Amy who are pretty antithetical to what Sonic is. And to say they are unquestionably worse is being pretty Projaredy. I can agree that they gameplay differs to an extent where it’s understandable to like one more than the other but thats about it.
    Having different objectives isn’t the issue, its that the levels weren’t designed with Sonic’s core gameplay in mind. Having levels with a kill/score requirement (that can easily be met) but still play like a regular level would be a good way of bringing back the shooting gallery. Something like what Shadow did but again, the quota would be smaller. Give Tails some gadgets and even have the Cyclone Walker act as its own power up.
    As for treasure hunting, again, the issues is that the levels and gameplay felt too different from Sonic. For that you could having the main objective be traveling through a more linear level from point A to B, but make it so that you again have an easily obtainable quota to get before you can clear the level. Give the player some kinda bonus for going well above the quota. Maybe have it so the player has to collect a certain number of things to unlock alternative paths in the level, or maybe finding alternate paths makes it easier to well above that quota.

    Honestly the werehog is the best part of sonic unleashed, the combat is done extremely well and somehow more enjoyable then day sonic

    Definitely something Sega should take notes if they're making Frontiers 2. Because when it comes to making a sequel to that there should be no excuse I want to fly around as tails. Climb walls is knuckles and shoot people as shadow. With chaos Spears

    Sonic 3 approach is the best in my opinion where tails and knuckles or other characters go through sonic’s levels with different movesets

    The problem with multiple characters is the one you always play first.
    Anything else makes it's feel like the game has a jarring lack of focus , whatever it is.
    Even Sonic could look bad with this method.
    I think they kept using it to make the main Sonic look good by comparison in Forces.
    So people wouldn't realize just how boring the main game was the whole time.
    The whole boost formula was basically just a mini-game , of coarse it got boring.
    I wonder how that could made into something more practical?
    I picture them adding more levels after the official release to extend the game.
    Kinda like the Smash Bros characters you can buy online.
