I would also add, for those like me who like to think they can do waaaaay more than is feasible, make sure to write out, every day, what would you like to do that day, and separate them into 3 columns, the first being what is the bare minimum you can do, one is a comfortable amount to do, and the last what would be a huuuge accomplishment to do! It really helps so that at the end of the day, even if you only managed the bare minimum, you aren’t just looking at all the things you didn’t do (which were most likely impossible), and instead are looking at all the things you did manage to do. This is perfect for someone with high standards and for someone who loves positive feedback, even from themselves

    • @schylerosborne7110
      @schylerosborne7110 4 роки тому +21

How are you able to tell the difference between the "bare minimum" "comfortable amount to do" and "huge accomplishment"? Serious question. I don't think I can distinguish this.

@@schylerosborne7110 I AM NOT AN EXPERT! But here I am with a wall of text anyways...
First off, don't beat yourself up over an off day. You can't give it your all all the time, everyone gets burnt out and needs a break. We have it harder than most when it comes to getting things done, so don't keep holding yourself to a standard that isn't adjusted for your health needs.
Second, *never* *be* *afraid* *to* *ask* *for* *help* .
Finally, it's crucial to know how to prioritize. Both importance (how badly does this need to happen) and urgency (how soon this needs to happen) must be taken into consideration. If you're having trouble with this, as many of us do, you can ask a friend for help or utilize resources like PriorityMatrix or other productivity apps (there are plenty of places to find help online, ADDitude being one I've looked at).
Often when determining the "bare minimum" for the day, I ask:
      1) Is the deadline for this task today? Or
1.5) Can this task only be done today?(But beware of the fallacy of exigency)
      2) Is there someone depending on me completing this task as soon as possible?
      3) Is the completion of this task necessary to the completion of tasks that are also "bare minimum"?
      4) Is the fact that this specific task is not done causing the most distress to me?(This one can be dangerous as someone with ADHD can be easily overwhelmed and bite off more than they can chew, and the emotional response to their failure to meet their impossible expectations can be devastating :/)
I try to keep the number of tasks I consider "bare minimum" low and realistic, though "realistic" changes from person to person and from day to day. I personally would rather get only a few things done in a day and feel accomplished than to be swamped and overwhelmed and get nothing done and feel miserable, because I did _something_ and I feel *good* about it!
For "comfortable amount to do", it's usually the "bare minimum" plus a list of a few things that I would enjoy doing to take a break from the necessary tasks or to work on projects or future deadlines. I try to keep a balance of things I have fun doing and things that are boring/tedious/annoying to keep it even and to avoid burnout. Feeling stuck after doing the same task for a long time? Just move on to something else to refresh.
A "huge accomplishment" is something that is probably strenuous, time-consuming, unenjoyable, too big to do alone, or some other reason that would make this task (seem?) impossible or at least abnormally difficult. Sometime these require outside help (which is _perfectly_ _fine_ ), or maybe just a lot of time and energy.
"Huge accomplishment" days are days where you get both the bare minimum done and do one of these daunting tasks, and maybe even _more_ . Days like this, getting all your work done, including something very hard, shouldn't be chased as a daily standard. Ideally, every day _should_ be a good day, where everything gets done and you are crazy productive and go to bed tired but happy, goals met, no dirty dishes left in the sink, and wearing clean PJs, lying on fresh sheets. *This* *is* *not* *realistic* , *nor* *is* *it* *healthy* *to* *expect* *this* *of* *yourself* *on* *a* *daily* *basis* . *You* *can* *not* , *and* *should* *not* *hold* *yourself* *to* *these* *standards* . Days like these are not a common occurrence, and for good reason. *Nobody* is capable of a consistently heavy workload, *and* *that* *includes* *neurotypical* *people* . Do your best, but don't beat yourself up if your best wasn't as good as you wanted yourself to be. Much love,
a member of ADHD gang ❤

Working from home was when the Pomodoro Technique really klicked for me. I never knew what to do with the breaks at the office, plus also social phobia awkward to just get up and what do nothing for a while? But suddenly, with just the cats watching, and a dish washer needs emptying, it turns out that it only takes five minutes to empty the dish washer, and that is both productive and a complete break from pushing the computer things to compute. And other home decluttering things can also be done in tiny five minute steps as a pomodoro break!

This really shows that what works for one person doesn’t for another. I find that with my ADHD, if I’m disrupted often (like every 25min) I get distracted. It might take me a while to start being productive, but once I’m productive I like to be so for at least an hour (I can do more). Frequent breaks for me are distributive and move my brain out of work mode prematurely and that’s definitely not good because it took a while to get into work mode in the first place 😂 reducing the amount of short breaks for me also reduces the periods of time when I can get distracted - what was meant to be 5min turned into hours

On top of that, professors are redesigning their assignments and tests to adjust them to an online format in ways that make them even harder. And they some days decide to give online lectures via zoom and other days just skip their lectures which confuses me a lot has made me a few of those lectures.

I'm retired so I'm at home. I'm also a professional reader and a crafter. So I read books, and I craft all day too. Someone just gave me an order for 50 cards so I'm keeping busy and I have tons of books to review.
I bought this super quiet timer that makes me switch between cards, books, meals, cleaning the house, etc. It made a huge difference, small enough to carry everywhere, with a visual so I can see if I should a new card or chapter in a glance. I think journaling in my BuJo makes it significant too. When I read after myself, I know I actually did something that day.
Usually my schedule is a bit changed during the weekend because my husband stays in his bathrobe and plays all day, and I stay in the office longer so I can be with him. Now he stays at home half the week and have to think "this is not the weekend" because otherwise I'd stay at my computer doing nothing important.
    Love your tips, TFS Nicole

Thank you for making this. I've been working from home since 2012 as a transcriptionist. I'm so scatterbrained that I have to impose a very tight system on myself to make a reasonable amount of money, down to only looking at the clock, once, as a treat, after every five minutes of audio I transcribe. I also have a "distractions" file I use to quickly offload thoughts I just can't get out of my head and then get back to work, and I make very precise plans about exactly how much money I need and what specifically I'm working for right now so every keystroke has a purpose. Without that kind of order everything falls apart and I do little snatches of work in between Fallout 4 sessions and end up staying up way too late.

Heath L I’ve been working from home for a few years - there are some UA-cam channels and podcasts that do background sounds like ‘coffee shot ambiance’ with or without music. I’ve found them super helpful (I have the same issue you do, I need to keep my ears busy but not engage my brain too much or I go nuts). (Edit: coffee shop, not shot!)

I've been working from home for two weeks now and I actually found it beneficial to my overall well-being:
    - I get way more sleep, because I don't waste time on a over one-hour-long commute just to get to work
    - I am less distracted because my house is much more silent than my office and not having to deal with people talking, phones ringing and copying machine buzzing allows me not to get overstimulated
    - I can eat what I want, when I want, so I don't have to waste my mental energy on thinking how hungry I am and how long I have to wait for the lunch break
    - I use my computer less once I finish working, because in my brain it has become a "work-tool"
What helps me focus (and the things were also mentioned in the video):
    - between breakfast and opening my computer I sit on my balcony for around 15 minutes to transition and simulate walking to work
    - I sit on a proper chair at a proper table, no laptop in bed or on the couch situation, which would trick me to into feeling that it's time to rest and relax
    - I try to let my supervisors know what I am doing during the day so I feel being held accountable
    - I'm making mini-breaks to hug my partner or to tell him something, just as I would make a break do to talk to a co-worker or to share something funny with my colleagues
    - I dress myself up in warm and comfortable clothes so I can feel good but put together at the same time (but I don't put on make-up because I feel better giving my skin a chance to breathe)

I love working from home too. The lack of commuting is the biggest benefit, but also I'm comfortable with me. I don't have to worry about the office bs. I can hyper focus and get more work done, because it's so quiet. I take a five minute break to start laundry, but get right back to work. When my daughter wants a break, she can switch the laundry over. We're all home and I find with everyone working, we all feed off of that to keep going. My daughter wouldn't work so hard if I didn't, and I don't want to be a distraction for my husband so I keep working. It helps the two of them to focus. It also helps that we are in separate rooms.

I've worked from home for ~10 years now and for the past 3 or 4, I've had a work laptop and my home computer. The work computer doesn't have any games on it (although I need to figure out how to restrict social media access) while my home computer doesn't have anything work related on it. It has been very helpful in creating some more separation between work and home, especially since I don't have separate spaces for each (although, thankfully, I have a separate area to sleep lol).

It's a surprisingly small thing, but I think the #1 struggle I'm having with working from home is being restricted to a small laptop screen instead of a desktop with two monitors. I didn't realize how much it helped me to be able to keep things visible!! In my normla work setup, when I'm working on a task and an email comes in, or I randomly think of another task to quickly take care of, the first task *stays* in my line of sight and therefore in my consciousness. Now, it's GONE and it's so disorienting!
Just writing all of that out made me realize that I can work around it to some extent -- maybe a whiteboard. Or maybe I can adjust my laptop settings to make the text smaller so I can fit more on one screen.

I seem to have found an 'extension' of the pomodoro technique...
When I am doing 'real work' I have cards with indices of 4. I try to accumulate as many as possible in one pile. I set a timer for 4 minutes and when I have exhausted 4 minutes, I put another card in the pile. However, I stop the timer when I'm not doing 'real work', but I need to stop and re-read something or deal with something unexpected. It helps me feel like I have a predictable, linear understanding of time but it gives me some space to deal with things that could throw me off. I want time to keep moving, so I'm kept accountable. I'm sure this sounds like a lot of work to other people, but I like it!

I was diagnosed with ADHD right before we went into quarantine. It sucks, but it’s also a relief because it should’ve happened months ago- years if I hold my dad accountable (and now the secretary in my school’s counseling office owes me coffee👌).
I’ve been trying to do some homework since there’s nothing better to do- except watch UA-cam of course- but I think my dose might be too low. Oh yeah, he put me on Adderall. He said (the doctor) that people usually start off at 5mg, but since I’m 17 he started me at 10mg, and I don’t feel anything. Like, zilch. Nada.
So I was a little worried since I’m supposed to go back 3 weeks after my last appointment, but I think there are certain hours where you’re allowed to go certain places, and you can go to the doctor as long you’re not experiencing any symptoms of you-know-what. I don’t know if that will change soon, probably if we go into lockdown, but for now.... eh. I got the diagnosis, so even if I won’t be able to get my medication until the COVID-19 epidemic clears up, at least I’m getting somewhere.

    • @nx8477
      @nx8477 4 роки тому

About your medication, I got started on Strattera and I swear for the first year I was on it, I swore it never worked and didn't do anything, even when they increased the dose.
There was one day about a year ago where I ended up having a particularly bad day regarding my ADHD and I came home so defeated thinking I was never gonna get better. Went to take my pills the next morning and it turned out I hadn't taken them for five days.
My suggestion (and it is only a suggestion, idk much about your situation to judge) is to stick with it. My psychiatrist told me often people don't realise that the meds worked until they come off it, which was definitely the case with me 😊

I recently moved to a new position and a new house and the "cups" idea has been amazing. I augmented it slightly to work with our house and my work day. Instead of cups I bought hanging chalkboards and chalk markers that allowed me to get out some of my creativity. I have 3 signs, "In a Meeting" "Please Knock" and "Come In". This allows me to keep the door closed thus blocking out house distractions.

    Things i like:
    - silence as a choice, music as a choice. I can switch them as i like
    - less interruptions - yes, chat and phones are there, but i think they discourage people from contacting you, rather than "hey you, come here"
    - have not to stay sit. Just taking my laptop on the sofa and i can continue working
    Things i challenge with:
    - boredom has so more ways to interrupt you at home
    - disconnecting my mind from work. Computer is right there, so if something is still working on my mind i am very tempted to go back to work

Doing school from home has really messed with me. for I few years I actually forgot that I had ADHD ( I stop meds at 12 and am currently 16). But doing school from home has forced me to open my eyes. It made me realize that I fidget ALOT, and pass over my schoolwork to find something more enjoyable/stimulating. It also made me realize that I actually could have passed my first 2.5 years of high school fairly easily had I been able to realize I desperately needed help and asked. I am starting to notice the classes/teachers that actually worked with my mind in the past and there is definitely a huge difference. It also didn't help that I was on break when quarantine started so My brain is still in break mode. I guess what I'm trying to say is finding this channel has been a bit of a godsend. I am now able to plan and arrange things so that I can actually get a schedule and I know to ask for help from my teachers. I now know that I am not lazy and there is nothing wrong with me, just that I work differently. I actually have confidence that I can pass my senior year next year and maybe even become the doctor I want to be with the right support system. Thank you from a new brain!!!

since I've been studying from home, I've been really frustrated with myself. I struggle to concentrate and especially to oversee what I need to do. So when I realized i wasn't going to make my deadline, I emailed my teacher. I was very open to her about my struggles. How my ADHD makes thing hard for me but I've developed some strategies to deal with it. Now, because of social distancing these strategies, like studying in the libary, aren't an option and I need some time finding my way in this new situation. She was really nice about it and also pointed me to your video's.
It's helping me realize again that it's 'normal' I struggle AND gives me some new things to try.

Basically everything you say resonates perfectly with me and it's been like three months now since I started researching about ADHD. I'm now pretty sure to have it and I would like my friends and family to watch this kind of videos to finally understand what's going on inside my mind everyday and most importantly to finally explain to them my history of weird behaviors that have decorated my whole life. The problem is: what if they don't care/believe that I have it? Wouldn't it be a little bit too egocentric to assume that they're so interested about me that they'd watch several videos about it? Or What if I have it but I fail my ADHD test in the sense that I succeed and then don't have it?
I think this because I'm 21 now and after all those years of struggling, I basically learned so many creative strategies to cope with so many problems(even passing tests), and yet I struggle with so many other things that not even friends and family know about. Btw I'm also Italian and here nobody knows about ADHD, at least I never heard anyone talking about it, so I don't know if I'd get the right test or if I would be dismissed by the doctor because he doesn't know what I'm talking about.

I NEEDED THIS SO BADLY THANK YOU
Though I must say, working and and staying home all day seems to be a bit easier now that everyone has to do it and school and work are specifically accommodating for it on a massive scale. It might just be easier right now because it's new and interesting to watch the world shift but we'll see how I actually adjust.

Color changing lights have been really helpful in setting different moods for work time vs. free time. I feel more productive under work lighting, and I know there are things I need to focus on. And with smart lights, you can even set them on a schedule so they can notify you of when it's time to take a break or call it a day!

Im 23 and I also was so focused on my dsylexia I never really focused on my ADD. I was medicated from a very early age and that really seemed to work for me. I work in an office job that im not incredibly passionate about, but I like it well enough, and I love my co workers. We were given the opportunity to work home, but we could still go into the office. Naturally, I wanted to stay home and stay safe. That was a few weeks ago. I was just crying in my home office today because, has become too difficult, and I needed to admit to self that it would be best to go to work. Im really afraid of the virus, but it's clear working from home is too difficult. I felt like such a failure. I sent the email to boss, and just cried. This video really helped me. All things you mentioned are why I was having such a horrible time. Im going to watch more of your videos so I can learn. Thank you for making me feel better.

I realise now that I've inadvertently cut out a lot of the transition time from my day by minimising set up time in order to make tasks simpler and less intimidating. Something I used to do when it was time to work but I didn't want to, was to make a cup of tea - usually when I sat down at my desk and started drinking it I was ready to at least look at the work, and then I'd get drawn into it. Now I realise why that was so helpful - it gave me transition time and a cue.

I needed this so bad. I have so much stuff to catch up because I‘m not doing anything. Even if I try, it demands sooo much mental work to find the email, find the right page and go down the entire checklist. I did like five things for school since quarantine and I‘m basically in a constant stress chilling state

I'm watching in 2022, and my school just announced that we are doing online school for a week at minimum. I feel like we should be online longer, and we probably will. But this really helped me, because we are currently trying to figure out how we will do school online for a week, this is really helping me. Thanks 💕
