  • Beta is a small company that builds its products in Florence, Italy--motors, frames and all. In this case, being small is a big advantage. Beta isn’t scrutinized as closely as Honda, KTM or Husqvarna when it comes to emissions and noise testing. The bike is clean and quiet enough to pass the standards set forth for a small importer. The testing and certification process is still lengthy, bureaucratic and expensive. That’s why Beta doesn’t have a dedicated off-road four-stroke in the standard line up any more. These days, a true off-road bike is required to go through a similar gauntlet of regulations. Beta does offer a closed-course competition four-stroke as a limited edition model.
    Beta has four dual-sport bikes that share most of the same parts and look nearly identical. There’s a 350, a 490, a 430 and a 500. All use the same electric-start motor with only differences in bore and stroke. It’s a double overhead cam four-valver with a six-speed gearbox and Synerject fuel injection. The chassis has a steel back bone frame with Sachs suspension. The rear shock uses linkage. The wheels have Nissin brakes and a Trail Tech GPS is standard equipment.

    Beta is sneaking up fast on KTM/Husky, more sales=more money for R&D and better bikes but I really want them to stay small so they don't get categorized the same as the big boys, Big Red and Big Orange ...love that they aren't "me too" bikes

    Husqvarna = Late-model Husaberg (KTM with linkage) bikes under a different name and paintjob. As for bigger companies, the contenders are Honda, Yamaha, and KTM. I own a 2017 Beta 300RR Race Edition, but they just aren't big enough to be truly noticed by the Regulatory KGB (yet)...

    I bought a new 300RR in 2015 and it's the best I bike have ever owned. My local dealer has a leftover 2018 500 RR-S for a grand off MSRP and I think I'm going to snatch it up. I was looking at something bigger like the 701 but like they mentioned in this video, the larger brands are choked up from the factory. Big $$$ to get them running right.

    Beta DOES offer the RR models that are off road only. They come with Sachs closed cartridge forks. The RRS model comes with open chamber forks. Dirt Bike needs to do more homework before their review.

      Philip P Day yea I agree. 500 I’m sure is an awesome bike but I know I won’t need that much power. Mostly single track and some desert and I do a lot of dual sport rides with D37 so that’s why I’m looking at he 430 but from what I see about the 390 that for sure has my attention. Beta is pretty awesome in this respect. Three screws, and the whole thing comes down to a low pro under-fender that looks like something you would buy from Sicass racing. I think they know you're going to take all that crap off anyway, but this way you don't have to buy it like the KTM owners do. Also the turn signals have a removable spacer if you want to do a free low profile set up. Downside is, they are still gigantic DOT lights. But still cool they went the extra mile.

    Beta sells all the bikes they can manufacturer maybe we should keep the Betas a secret. Keep them under the EPA radar. So we can keep getting dual sports that run correctly from the factory. Unlike the other manufacturers that you have to add a $,1000.00 to make them run properly

As I understand it now a dirt bike you can ride on the street (with a plate) is a dual sport, where as a street bike you can take off road is an enduro. That's just my take on it.

    • @painmagnet1
      @painmagnet1 5 років тому +2

      An enduro is an off road race bike. They would be more correct to refer to the Betas as a street- legal enduro than a dualsport. Dualsports are street and dirt, with larger oil and fuel capacity, quite heavy and not built for racing. Large dualsports are called adventure bikes.

      @dirtbikeron 5 років тому

      Since we recorded this video we replaced the battery with a heavy duty accessory unit sold by Beta and we haven't had more trouble. We have learned in the past to carry a lithium jumper battery along on dual-sport rides, though. They're small enough to fit in a tool bag and very handy.

    • @maximusmiles8435

      @@dirtbikeron Be nice for the price of the bike they would throw in a decent battery. I've owned betas. From my experience with the brand, they perform beautifully. But the ones I've owned, they leaked oil from the showroom floor. And had electrical problems, that took a year back and forth from the dealership to sort out. Probably why they aren't mainstream. If it was all about performance they would be.

      @@maximusmiles8435 Funny, been riding for 30+ years, 9 KTM'S, 4 GasGas, miriad of Japanese bikes. Bought my first Beta 18 months ago, '17 390, and it's been flawless from day 1. Lots of flogging in Oregon and Washington woods as well as a week long trip to Moab. Electrical, like anything else on a high school dirt bike needs adequate maintenance. Some dialectic grease periodically and zip tie a few places for safe measure and good to go. Btw, keep battery on tender when not in use, turn off ignition when not running bike, and don't start/restart bike 25 times in a row and you'll be fine. Most issues I've seen are from inexperienced guys owning their first high performance bike. The Beta is a race bike with street legal gear, not the other way around. We now have 5 Beta's in our group and many former KTM guys. Zero issues.
